The final match of the CB Series turned out to be a last-over thriller, as India pulled off a magnificent nine-run win to seal the CB Series finals 2-0. Defending 258, where Sachin Tendulkar contributed 91, the Indians kept Australia down down to 249, thanks largely to Praveen Kumar, who starred with the ball, taking 4 for 46. James Hopes led a splendid fightback, but was the last man out for a brave 63.

For the second time in two high-pressure matches Praveen Kumar justified the decision to give him the new ball with the wickets of Australia's three most dangerous batsmen.

When it came Australia's turn to bat under lights at the Gabba the top wobbled once again, putting immense pressure on Matthew Hayden and Andrew Symonds, whose eventful season continued with him shoulder charging a streaker while chasing 259 in the second final. Another Hayden half-century carried Australia to 3 for 115 by the halfway mark and his 83-run association with Symonds has kept this contest alive.

Hunting a target at over five runs an over is never easy but Australia simply failed to come to terms with Praveen and the moving new ball. Adam Gilchrist's last appearance at the Gabba came to end with an edge and a walk, against a gem that gained on him, but it was Ricky Ponting's horrendous attempt a pull shot that really set off the alarm bells. Ponting had been especially good at this venue but could only lob the ball to mid-on for another single-digit score.

If Brisbane had been very muggy during the afternoon it only heated up as the lights came on: Michael Clarke survived a very tight shout for leg before first ball - height was the factor as far as the umpire Tony Hill was concerned - and Hayden should have been on his way for 5 if not for a mess-up between Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Sachin Tendulkar, at first slip.

Praveen kept his cool, however, to land the ball on the dime repeatedly and suffocate the scoring. Clarke's ability to judge length has been his boon in the tournament but he lost his off stump, playing a crude swipe across the line, to one that stayed low.

Sreesanth also got the ball to move but it was Praveen's nagging length and gentle mixture of away and in-swing that confounded Australia's chase. He's not a quick bowler by any means but his basics offered India the bite they may have lacked in the injured Ishant Sharma's absence.

Hayden batted firmly to keep the asking rate in control, bludgeoning boundaries both sides of the square. Irfan Pathan was again the target of Hayden's ire and went for 37 from five overs. Symonds appeared to be shrugging off his poor tournament with a couple typically hard-hit boundaries. Australia managed just three boundaries in the first 15 overs but collected seven more in the next ten. Symonds carted young Piyush Chawla's first delivery for six over long-on in the 24th over to cue hysterics form the local fans.

These two batsmen have excellent records in finals and have begun to show what they're worth. Batting suddenly appeared very, very easy.

There was to be no repeat of his twin centuries against Australia in 1998, but a determined 91 from Sachin Tendulkar formed the crux of a competitive 9 for 258 as India attempted to shut the hosts out of the CB Series.

When Tendulkar was going strong India looked set for closer to 300 but his dismissal, sandwiched between a brace of reckless wickets, allowed Australia to give themselves a fair shot at forcing a third game. India would have preferred even 280 after Tendulkar's dismissal on the cusp of the final ten overs but having seized the initiative they allowed it to slip with a flurry of impetuous shots.

Not for the first time, India relied on Tendulkar's experience to provide them a solid start. They were steady during the Powerplays, scoring 36, 30 and 26 in three blocks, but made their best opening of the tournament. Within a couple overs it was evident this was an easy-paced surface, and a slip was taken out to accommodate another man on the leg side as Tendulkar and Robin Uthappa dabbed a few easy singles. The ball didn't speed away to the ropes when the batsmen leaned into their drives and so they smartly adjusted gears, keeping the outfielders busy through a mixture of full-faced dabs to third man and flicks to deep square leg.

Lured forward by Brett Lee's near-perfect length and immaculate seam position on a couple occasions, Tendulkar preferred getting across and trying to work the ball into the gaps. Only once did Lee offer width and Tendulkar promptly tapped him over backward point for four.

Tendulkar had a life on 7 when Ricky Ponting dropped a hard reflex catch at short cover. An utterly mistimed pull attempt off Nathan Bracken was the first sign of frustration but he quickly regained composure and decided to target Stuart Clark, who replaced Brad Hogg in the XI. A punched on-drive, the firmest of flat-batted swats past a very straight mid-on and an attractive off-drive put him into his zone and with Mitchell Johnson unable to locate his radar India had successfully gnawed away at Australia's attack. His fifty came up from his 70th delivery.

It was here that Australia, after misfielding regularly, brought themselves back. Uthappa, who quickly realised the outfield was a touch slow, had moved along efficiently to 30 before he spooned a catch to mid-off. Gautam Gambhir, the leading run-scorer of the tournament, tried one fancy shot too many and was snapped up down at long-on for a brisk 15.

Yuvraj Singh drove his second delivery over long-on for six and an even bigger shot followed, off bent knee, tiers back over the longest boundary at the Gabba. He scored a run-a-ball 38 out of a partnership of 54 but a failure to curb his enthusiasm did him in as Matthew Hayden held an easy catch at long-on. There was no show of emotion as he trudged off, but at the other end Tendulkar shook his head.

Tendulkar looked set for a 43rd ODI century, having helped himself to a glorious reverse-sweep, all supple of wrist, to move from 83 to 87 in the 38th over. The end came all too suddenly, however, as he chipped towards mid-on and was expertly snapped up by the same man who reprieved him earlier, diving forward with top reflexes.

Michael Clarke picked up a third, Rohit Sharma offering a simple catch to cover, and India had slipped from 3 for 173 to 5 for 204. Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who had promoted himself ahead of Rohit, blasted a few down the ground in his 36 but the lower order found the fielders more than the much-needed boundaries. James Hopes allowed just one run in the 45th over, Nathan Bracken was accurate with his crafty mix of yorkers and slower deliveries, taking two wickets in the 48th over, and Lee kept it full as well.

The last time Australia surrendered back-to-back finals was 1983-84 and 1984-85, against West Indies, and a loss today would be a chastening blow. But they are not ranked No. 1 without reason, so expect fireworks when the chase begins.

Hayden scratches head, insults Harbhajan

In what is probably the most recent of spats between the two cricketers, Matthew Hayden is reported to have teased Harbhajan by scratching his near-bald head when the latter was in immediate vicinity. This incident happened when the two teams were boarding their buses after the match at Brisbane. Sources close to the driver of the Australian coach (whose existence was appreciated by Shane Warne) have revealed that this gesture was meant to frustrate and irritate Harbhajan Singh who was unable to scratch his head whenever he wanted to because of his turban.

The incident is being interpreted as a religious insult by the Indian management, who feel that Harbhajan was targeted deliberately because of his headgear. �Why didn�t Hayden do this against Ishant?� fumed an Indian official who did not want to be named. �After all, Ishant has more hair than Harbhajan! I�ll tell you why. Hayden came to know after his last radio interview that Ishant actually has a black belt in Karate. And since he didn�t specify what kind of ring he wanted to face Ishant in, he was afraid that his challenge will be accepted�, the official revealed.

An Indian team member, on condition of anonymity, said such a gesture was uncalled for. �How would Hayden feel�, he asked, �if we went near him and started combing our hair?� A BCCI official said that such action was despicable from an accomplished batsman. �What Harbhajan does with his hair is his own business. Who is Hayden?� he thundered. Niranjan Shah, the BCCI secretary, expressed his disappointment over the incident. �The Australian team has to keep in mind that it has to visit India later this year�, he said. �There are many more bald men in India and they might teach Hayden a thing or two about scratching.�

Many Australian players were unavailable for comment. However, former captain Steve Waugh, who pioneered many mental disintegration tactics, was eager as always to go on record and proclaimed that cricketers who grow long hair should face the consequences. �What happens when they board the bus should stay within the bus. Australians play it hard and fair�, he added, rather out of context.

Peter Lalor came up with a scathing attack on Harbhajan Singh in his latest column. �Harbhajan�s antics after India won the series were disgusting�, he wrote. �His chest-thumping can rightly be viewed as yet another racist gesture. This incident explains to all why he is a sick [sic!]�, wrote Lalor, confusing words at various levels. Malcolm Conn was not less vituperative. He wrote, �It is difficult to understand why the BCCI is still persisting with a player whose very presence is enough to cause the gentlest of Australian cricketers to fly into rage. Cricket Australia, by not pressing charges against Harbhajan for his odious presence, is yet again is proving that it has ceded authority to the BCCI. It is time money stopped calling shots in this game.�

India are yet to decide whether or not to press charges against Hayden. It is expected they will wait till October this year, when the Australian team is to tour India, and then spring this issue to go one up on the shock factor.

What a great series victory for India! We were very consistent throughout the series and a well deserved victory! I would rate this ODI series victory right up there at the top though second only to the '83 WC where a innocent bunch of Kapil's men humbled a star-studded team of Caribbean charmers...

What makes this victory so sweet & remarkable is:
1. First of all, we packed the bags of the WC runner up's SL as a token of reciprocation (not necessarily a badla) for kicking us out of the WC
2. Second of all, we knocked down the world champions 2-0 in the finals in their own backyard.
3. Third of all, barring Aandavar, we have an inexperienced team which has this aggressive, �go get it� attitude which proved many doubters, including me, wrong

Overall, the performance of this Indian cricket team in both the Test & ODI series is commendable. To me, this is the most successful tour ever by an Indian cricket team Down Under since Lala Amarnath�s men first toured in �47-48. In the Tests, our performance was "on par" with the Aussies (though the scoreline of 1-2 should have been 1-1). In ODI's, we were clearly the better team than a relatively experienced but "tired" Aussie lineup that is slowly but surely starting to crack!

Based on how the Aussies performed in both Tests & ODI's and MacGill fitness woes only compounding their biggest problem of searching for Warnes's replacement - I can't help to think whether is it the beginning of the end of an Australian Golden era?

"This is a greater victory than the World Twenty20," was captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni's reaction after India won their first tri-series in Australia, succeeding at the formidable task of beating the top-ranked side in their own den twice.

Dhoni, who has now led India to victory in two prestigious events in the last seven months, attributed the results to a team effort. "The role of the captain was not the only one. The captain is one guy who gathers the pressure and then channels it to the individual player and then it depends on how that individual reacts," he said. "We didn't start that well but we improved as the tournament went on and the credit should go to every player."

India's batting, which has been their biggest weakness throughout the tournament, came into its own during the finals with Sachin Tendulkar hitting top form. Tendulkar followed up his stellar performance at the SCG on Sunday with a vital 91 in Brisbane. Despite ordinary performances early in the tournament, Dhoni never doubted his senior-most batsman. "Performance is one thing, but performing back-to-back is something else. He is the best."

Dhoni was relieved India had wrapped up the series at the Gabba thereby avoiding the trip to Adelaide. Was he desperate that they complete the job in Brisbane? "Yes, because I have not ridden my motorbike for quite a long time," Dhoni joked but added that a third game would have been taxing for his players, some of whom have been away from home for about three months.

After a resounding victory in the first final, India's decision to bat first in Brisbane paid off with Tendulkar and Robin Uthappa giving them a solid opening stand of 94. While India have shuffled their batting order during the series, Dhoni said Uthappa's promotion to the opening slot had given the batting a settled look. "Robin changed his game a little bit and reacted to the situation and curbed his aggressive instincts." (Wow, looks like thalaivar would continue to open in ODIs )

Throughout the tournament, like in the ICC World Twenty20, Dhoni surprised many with his team selections and his on-field strategies. For the crucial final over in the World Twenty20 final, he threw the ball to the inexperienced Joginder Sharma, in the first final here he asked Praveen Kumar, another rookie, to take the new ball. That move paid off; Praveen got crucial top-order scalps and did an encore at the Gabba.

The other surprise was to play the legspinner Piyush Chawla, who was overlooked during the league phase, in the finals. "We wanted to play Piyush, and wanted him to use as a surprise. He mixed it up really well was consistent in his line and length."

When the squad was picked Dhoni had strongly recommended the presence of youngsters. While that gamble has now proved successful, he said he never doubted that it was the only way ahead. "Even if we had lost this tournament, we should have stuck with the young boys. This will be the team's core."

Pak veterans heap praise on Dhoni's men

Former Pakistani cricketers on Wednesday praised the gutsy performance of Mahendra Singh Dhoni and his men, who beat world champions Australia to win the tri-series in style.

India stunned Australia on Tuesday by winning the first two of the best-of-three finals, leaving the hosts ruing their second successive series defeat in the triangular event.

"In the end, the class of Sachin Tendulkar came through in telling fashion giving us another example that the little master's career is far from over even now," former Pakistan captain Javed Miandad said.

Tendulkar blasted a hundred and 91 in the finals to set up the sweet victories for his side after a particularly abrasive Test and one-day series.

Miandad said Tendulkar was the main difference between the two sides. "He scored runs when it mattered the most in not easy conditions to bat in. There was a lot of pressure on him and he came through. You could see he was very keen to win this series."

The former Pakistan skipper said Dhoni led his young side well and used his bowlers intelligently.

"The decision to use a natural wristy swing bowler like Praveen Kumar on the Australian pitches was a wise decision and it paid off."

Miandad said the Indians had shown some chinks in the Australian armoury.

"But I do not think this is the start of a bad run for the Aussies. They still remain a tough nut to crack and will bounce back soon," Miandad said.

Former wicketkeeper Rashid Latif said India deserved to savour their victory as it had been a good last few days for them
"They also won the ICC Youth World Cup in Malaysia, so it is a double celebration for them. But I like the way their selectors are showing more faith in younger players for the one-day version of the sport," he said.

Latif said Australia only had themselves to blame for the defeat.

"I just felt maybe at times their focus was more on other things like sledging and confrontations with the Indian players. They did not concentrate single-mindedly on their cricket."

"You could see the Indians were more hungry and focused to win the finals. Maybe the Australians were a bit complacent at times and it backfired for them," Latif said.

Former Test bowler Rashid Khan said India's victory was more due to their mental tenaciousness than anything else.

"I think the incidents in the Test series made them more determined to win the tri-series.

"But there is no doubt they have found a good sensible and composed captain for one-day cricket in Dhoni and their policy of having different captains for Test and one-day cricket is paying of well for them," Khan sad.

He also advised the Pakistan board to study the Indian concept on captaincy and see if it can work in Pakistan.

Former Test spinner Tauseef Ahmed said Australia did not play like the world champions and deserved to lose the series.

"India had far more variety in their bowling and they did the right thing by including a leg-spinner for the finals. For Australia to win, their batsmen had to click all the time as their bowling is one-dimensional now. I think Australia could face more tough times as India has shown they are fallible," he said.

'Australia need to learn from India'

Ian Chappell: India have scripted a famous series victory at the 'Gabba and this translates into four losses in a row to Australia in finals in their own tournament. They lost two in a row to England last year and now they have lost two in a row to a vibrant, young Indian side.

Where do Australia go from here? Well, their hand is going to be forced a little bit; they are going to have a few players leaving in Brad Hogg and Adam Gilchrist. Matthew Hayden is still playing well but he is getting on a bit and perhaps where Australia need to look is just across the bench - at India.

India have gone for a youth-look after having a very poor World Cup in 2007 and boy, hasn't it paid off for them. They won the ICC World Twenty20 in South Africa last year and now they have had a magnificent win in Australia under difficult conditions on a tough tour. They have beaten Australia 2-0, by looking for youth and perhaps that is what Australia have got to start doing - get a bit younger. This is an old one-day side though it has been a very successful one-day side, but I think it's probably time to start giving youth a chance. You are now probably looking at guys like Cameron White and David Hussey to come in to the line-up to bring in a bit of youth and enthusiasm. The fielding is very good even for an older side - they are brilliant in the field - but I think that [in the direction of youth] is where Australia have got to head.

The tournament? Well that is the last of the triangular series in Australia. It has just become too unwieldy having to play reciprocal matches with the same team in the triangular series. It has just gone out of hand for Australia and they can't keep up that number of matches. So the tournament is finished as a triangular and in the future Australia will be playing the two touring teams separately in one-day matches. So, that is the last we will see of the triangular.

For India, well, it has been a triumph for their selectors. It has been an absolute triumph for Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who has been brilliant as a captain. Even at the end when India had won - and what a great victory it is, their first ever win in a triangular in Australia - and everybody in the Indian side was going berserk and leaping around the place, there was Dhoni - cool as you like. There wasn't even a smile on his face. He's a very cool captain, he stayed cool right to the end and he has led this side absolutely brilliantly. He asked for young players, he was given young players and he backed them to the hilt and he has been rewarded by those young players performing, probably, over and above themselves. There are a lot of positives to come out of this tour for India.

If you look at the two Sharmas - Ishant and Rohit - I think they are two very good, young cricketers. India suddenly found Praveen Kumar at the end and he was very good in the one-day series swinging the ball; he got it to swing both ways tonight and he has been very good. Gautam Gambhir has shown that he has a terrific temperament and he has made a couple of hundreds in Australia and that will do him the world of good. Robin Uthappa got better and better as the series went along. So India have got a lot of positives coming out of this series and I should also mention Piyush Chawla. He has bowled very steadily. He hasn't taken any wickets but he has bowled very steadily and showed a good temperament. So India can take a lot of positive things home from the tournament. India is a side on the rise and Australia, now, have to do some rebuilding.

For the third team in this tournament, Sri Lanka, where India have had big success with their young players, Sri Lanka have not. Their young players have stagnated; they haven't come on and consequently they really struggled in this tournament for a good part of the way. They have some older players moving on, a bit like Australia, and it will be time to give some more youth a chance. The problem is, India have picked youth and they have played well. Sri Lanka have been picking some young players but they haven't really come on. So Sri Lanka have really got some thinking to do now to decide where they are going in the future.

Kalyan,
I have written here more than once that Dhoni has been very consistent in batting in this series. My grouse with him has been with some specific instances of his captaincy and the generic issue of his batting being ugly. Of course he has been effective in general.
P.S: Also, in a few instances post-captaincy, he has been overcautious

When you people voted India will win, It is not beacause you have analysed all the players talent and said so. It is just because we you guys were also Indians. Simple.

I am not going to change that opinion. At that point of time India did not had chance to win. And without saurav and dravid the team is not that strong too, though it appears strong now.

If you see closely one thing in the series, the bowlers made a big difference. Whenever we tour Australia we very rarely get them bundled out cheaply. But in this whole series they could make the Australians struggle except one game where they scored more than 300. If the bowling could have been weak then no matter what India could have struggled to win even a single match. Dhoni looked consistent in many matches by taking many balls. If Australia were in the best batting form, dhoni could have exposed.
If not for Tendulkar the chances in final also is a big question. His runs made the big difference between the sides in the finals.
Like that many things could be told.

At that point of time what we said is correct. You buy a lottery ticket hoping you will get crores in that. I analyse and say the proabability is very less. But in the end you could get the money. That does not mean that my basic understanding is wronng

Well win is always a win. Enjoy the win. I sincerely hope the form continues

A MATCH jam-packed with desperate action has brought a pulsating summer to an appropriately dramatic conclusion.

It was a contest full of thrills and spills, first Sachin Tendulkar seemed to have won the series for his team. Then the Indian lower order faltered. Australia collapsed again but as the crowd roared, so James Hopes restored hope for his overheated side. And then, with two cricketing countries agog, a mighty visiting captain tossed the ball to his most vulnerable bowler and the deed was done. It was enormous. Might have been a changing of the guard.

Apart from the frenzied finish and the curious outbreak of tackles on the field, the abiding memory of the match came from Tendulkar's bat. The first final, in Sydney, had produced one of the game's finest chasing innings. Alas, the hullabaloo distracted attention from Tendulkar's hundred. Accordingly, reporters hoped for a second helping from the maestro. Happily he obliged with a superb effort in the second final.

Over the past 15 years, cricket enthusiasts have enjoyed many delights but two stand out. Anyone able to follow the careers of Tendulkar and Shane Warne at close quarters has been privileged. They count among the most enchanting and compelling cricketers the game has seen. Both were craftsmen of high calibre but also artists of supreme talent. Warne was a mesmerising tweaker with a fiercely competitive streak. The Indian remains a classical batsman unburdened with ego and capable of exquisite strokeplay.

Magnificent in Sydney, Tendulkar produced another well paced innings. It is not so long ago that observers wondered whether the time had come for the veteran to slip down the order. He had been losing his wicket to the new ball and seemed to have lost his edge. Recently, another critic pointed out that Tendulkar had never scored a one-day hundred in Australia and had a relatively poor record chasing targets. Never awaken the sleeping tiger.

Although Brett Lee beat him with a couple of frisky outswingers, Tendulkar looked comfortable from the first ball. At such times his bat appears as wide as the Suez Canal. The straight drive is the cornerstone of his batting and he plays it perfectly. To this solid foundation he adds fertile strokes square of the wicket and improvisations executed with imagination and dexterity. But the drive past the bowler tells the tale. It is an immaculate stroke unfurled without any hint of flamboyance.

Spectators find in it the same satisfaction as a mathematician does in a formula. Tendulkar does not indulge himself at the crease. His style is not a style at all, merely his way of scoring runs. Even the apparently cheeky upper cut and the reverse sweep aired yesterday take into account score and field. He calculates and then commits.

Not that every straight drive is the same. Normally the ball is punched past the bowler with an abbreviated swing. Facing Stuart Clark, he adjusted his stroke, rolled his writs at impact and still managed to send the ball speeding past deep mid-on. If the seamer was nonplussed by this offering, he must have been startled by the batsman's next creation as a good length delivery was blasted past him off the back foot. Few men have been able to play the straight pull.

The Indian also took delight in guiding lifters over the slips, the shot that kept the score rattling along in Sydney. Nor is he content merely to elude the catchers. Depending on the field, he places the ball wide or fine. At one stage at the Gabba, Ricky Ponting sent two colleagues to patrol the third-man boundary whereupon the batsman sent the ball between them. It is difficult enough to find the gaps with orthodox strokes.

Tendulkar is also adept at developing singles off accurate deliveries. Either he stuns the ball towards gully and scampers or he steers the ball behind point with a stroke reminiscent of a monarch knighting a favoured admiral. Accordingly he does not allow pressure to build.

After a bright start, Tendulkar pushed the score along steadily, biding his time and allowing fresher partners to take risks. Although the Australians had raised their game, especially in the field, where Michael Clarke excelled, the Indian opener marched impressively towards a final onslaught. I would say even if sachin is not coming to the party, its a 'good' team and if he too clicks on a consistent basis, then this team is one of the best

As for bowlers doing well, actually we kept losing our strike bowlers through the series and still have done well, kudos to Venkatesh Prasad for that - started off with Zaheer and we lost him and then RP and even Ishant and still our bowlers have done well

What he might have meant there is the difference b/w Australia and India in this series compared to our previous outings in Australia. We were almost same in batting in the previous series. But this time our bowlers have remained so effective that they were able to defend even a total less than 250. That would not have been the case when we had the great Agarkar in our side before.

Not just him, I would also agree that the major difference came from the bowlers. They stood almost b/w Victory and Defeat in few matches except the match in which JayaSurya blasted Srishanth (I thought he deserved it fully) and the match in which the Aussies scored 300+

You agree or not, Sachin played a huge role in winning the two finals (not to forget our bowling). We all saw how the other batsmen throwed thier wicket even after settled. Other players did well too (Rohit, Dhoni & Yuvraj) in the finals, but they were just like supporting roles. Sachin inspired the team in a big way.

In this series, India won only one match after Sachin got out early and came close in the other one. I don't want to go on and on, let's enjoy the win.

no selva, i didnt mean fans who do that - it was more in terms of 'this team has managed to fight till the end even when sachin has failed and when he has scored big the others too have played a supporting role and won the game easy'. there were matches in the prelims too where in sachin fell for 0/2 etc and still we managed to win one match and almost chase down 300+. that said, its still early days for the young team and they wud sure lose some matches and it wud be good if they do go the chosen path

LM, sachin was the only reason for first finals victory and no one wud dispute that - and in the second one, though he played a good knock the lower middle order incl dhoni failed to capitalise and thanks to PK and Bajji we managed a win. my post was not to reduce even an iota of importance on sachin's effort in the finals. only grouse is that those should not reduce the efforts put in by gambhir/dhoni/uthappa and rohit in the run up to the finals. there are some articles too coming in the tone of sachin played in finals and he is also a senior and so bring back dada/dravid/kumble and who not into the team

1. You agreed half of my statement with this.
2 and 3. You are talking mainly abt test series Srilanka lost. Agreed. India made big impact in the test series. Reasons. Sachin, Ganguly, Dravid, Laxman, Kumble and to some extent Ishant. In the one day side only Sachin and Ishant were present. some of the youngsters Dhoni, Yuvraj, Harbhajan and few more were pathetic under testing conditions. Going with all these Srilankans at that time were better than India in my opinion. That is what the analysis based on. You may say Test Cricket is different. But one day is not 20-20 either. There needs to some character has to be shown.

They could bundle out Australia within 250 many of the matches in ODI and even in Test many instances within 400 or 300 which is extremely good. If not for the bowlers india is the same and i am sure our batting could have been easily exposed.

At the start of the season Australia were intent on retaining their world-beating status and by the end were just trying to limit damage. With much hindrance from a committed opponent, they failed with both aims. The No. 1 one-day ranking will be lost to South Africa if they beat Bangladesh 3-0 this month and the drop would be another dent for a team that has struggled with its identity since the fractious Sydney Test.

In the first week of the New Year Ricky Ponting won a world-record equalling 16th Test in a row and was preparing to head to Perth for what should have been the easiest contest of the series with India. Instead it became the most difficult due to a mix of public reaction to Sydney, a flat surface and a touring team that had been galvanised during their threats to take all bats, balls and briefcases home. Australia lost at the WACA and over the next two months were mostly unrecognisable from the all-conquering outfit of 2007.

How much Australians turned against their national team is hard to gauge exactly, but the players were shocked when large sections criticised their overall performance at the SCG. The Test ended in the most remarkable result but was instantly over-shadowed by a rash of controversies. Following team discussions covering behaviour and attitude, the side retained its spirit-of-cricket pledge and vowed to be "hard but fair" - the same way they believed they had always performed.

Australian players in the Perth contest said it was the quietest Test they had ever been part of due to the fear of offending. Australia lost in four days, the streak was over and the aura slowly diminished. Having shed a quartet of outstanding competitors the previous summer, Australia had actually done well to keep things together for so long. Adam Gilchrist's departure, which he revealed during the draw in Adelaide, will make things much harder as they try to recover ground and mojo.

While the Test series was a success despite the swing in the final two games, Australia's CB Series stumbled towards disaster even when they were winning. Four bonus points were collected by the home team, but the fringe benefits flattered an outfit that was struggling with fatigue, a range of issues that never seemed to disappear, a wobbling batting order and an underperforming captain and key allrounder. A more vibrant Indian side was not brought down by the various controversies, which seemed to act as spurs instead of weights.

If Ponting and Andrew Symonds had completed merely average returns things could have been different. Instead the pair, which was heavily involved in the Indian Premier League developments, combined for only 365 runs in ten matches and the bowlers could not sustain their miracle escapes in the two matches that mattered most. Nathan Bracken, who is now a one-day specialist, was incredible in capturing 21 wickets and the Man-of-the-Series award, while Brett Lee was inspirational until the finals, when he looked as tired as a new parent.

In a three-team tournament Australia needed more from than their batsmen than finishing fifth (Gilchrist), sixth (Michael Clarke), seventh (Matthew Hayden) and eighth (Michael Hussey) on the run list. It was the lack of output that resulted in the absence of the series trophy for the second year in a row. A 2-0 defeat was an appropriate outcome and something the players accepted.

India irritate Australia's senior men in a way no other team can manage and the uneasy relationship adds to the home side's confusion. Australia knew they should have been better than their eclectic opponents, but they were unable to remember the valid reasons why.

The age-old talk became nasty by modern standards and India's new breed had not been kicked around in previous series. Big-name reputations didn't matter and Australia's substance went missing. if iam not wrong, you based your prediction on the team selected for the ODI series, at that time the bowlers have already proved themselves in the test. The detractors main POV was just because its a T20 team, the batting stood no chance against aussies.

The batting had come good without major contributions from Tendulkar in the league games. ofcourse, the master proved his class in the finals and the last league game against sri lanka.
Now you guys say, the batting is the same as last time, but the bowling made the difference.

somewhere in between the start of the series and the end of the finals, the detractors POV had changed.

the main difference apart from tendulkar is bhajji ( crucial breakthroughs in both the finals), who didn't play the VB series in 2004.

and fielding - now we have another great fielder who can do well at point apart from Yuvi in Rohit sharma. Robin Uthappa has been doing well in the field and so has Gambhir. Add Raina/Tiwari and DK we have a great fielding unit. Piyush chawla also caught one wonderful catch in the first finals - one thing which i feel is lacking is the ability to hit the stumps more often, with a coach to guide them towards all that, its only going to improve!! infact one of the slow fielders for india was Yuvi with his knee injury and infact he stood at point too in the second final - his knee is improving then
the best part is U-19 team was very good in fielding too - promising indian team in the making!! IPL would definitely unearth a few talents

Being avid watcher for quite some time, i feel that the talent is always there in our country. the bowling dept we have new and young blood. The only issue is to groom the talent and not waste it. The NCA would be ideal platform for that.
these young kids should be watchfully made to keep themselves fit and should not be overexposed. We already have an excellent example of KAPIL DEV who without these modern day facilities kept himself fit even while bowling in Indian conditions.

Petty policitcs of zonal system and ego should not be allowed to come into encouraging these young players. They should keep their feet firmly on ground for that they need wise leadership and guidance. If it is done, our country will achieve more and more spectacles.

Wanted to post this earlier...
Not for the first time, we could see Singam pushing himself to the limit. Apparently, the groin injury has been there and he has been carrying along.
And the way he ran between the wickets inspite of that Reminded one of his running like mad in Sharjah-98.
He has done this in the past also (when he had his back problem, tennis elbow etc). veliya theriyama sila pala vishayam irukkum pola.
And i think in the first final (or was it the 2nd?), Dhoni was also having some back problems....

yes dedenitely.....esp i still vividly remember that sharjah innings from thalaivar....uyir'a koduthu aadinnaru...thala may not be one of the fittest cricketrs in the world but certainly the most dedicated cricketer of all time..

India's ODI captain defends dropping seniors

Mahendra Singh Dhoni hopes India's "significant" victory in the CB Series will silence those who criticised the youth-oriented squad selection for the tournament. Asserting his role in the selection of the young one-day side - he is India's ODI captain - he said it was "sometimes very important to send the message across".

"I was pretty clear about the players I wanted in the side," Dhoni told Cricinfo in a revealing interview where he spoke about the selection controversy for the first time. "That's what I said to the selectors as well. You can see the kind of team I got."

The team's selection became controversial after Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid were left out. While some criticised the decision to drop the seniors, others questioned the timing of the selection, a day after the historic win in the Perth Test. The selection also created a few ripples in the dressing room, it was learnt then.

Dhoni, though, is clear the time had come for a tough decision to be taken and felt vindicated after the final triumph. "It's very important because the process and the timing were criticised a lot," he said. "But sometimes it is very important to send the message across, because sometimes people neglect the answer."

He said he pointed out to the ODI team the questions that were being raised about the players and told them to perform.

It's evident that the criticism rankles even after winning the tournament. "What now? Why are people not asking the same questions now? Because if the result was not in our favour, what would have happened? Would the people have been really behind this side or behind individuals?"

A majority of the team had not played in Australia earlier and certain sections raised questions about their ability to handle demanding conditions. India's pathetic display in the one-off Twenty20 was seen as a sign of things to come but Dhoni was happy his side had overcome the odds.

"You [the critics] questioned this side but now that it's performed you need to back it," he said of India's first one-day series win in Australia in 23 years. "We all knew, and you all knew, what would have happened if this side didn't do well in Australia. Now that it has done well, why don't you appreciate the performance?

"We had one of the worst flops in Twenty20 and one of the best wins in the ODI series. Beating Australia is tough. That's why they have the best-of-three finals. You can have one good day and beat them but beating them in two consecutive matches is a significant achievement."

Dhoni made it clear that the aggressive tactics against Australia were premeditated, going so far as to ensure that a few individuals made life difficult for the opposition. "In the CB Series you hardly saw any conflict between India and Sri Lanka," he said. "We had set the standards back in India, when we played [the ODI series] against Australia. We knew what we really wanted to do on the field. If we were not up to the mark in Australia, people would have said it was fake aggression, something just for the public when playing at home. We were with the same set of standards even when we played against Australia in Australia. It was not fake aggression, that's how this team can play."

Did he think the best way to beat Australia was by playing their brand of cricket? "If your playing against an aggressive side, you need to play an aggressive game," he said. "Especially against Australia, you can't just look to play and win - it's batting, bowling, fielding, aggression, everything. Fortunately this side has got a few players who can speak and do well at the same time and won't get disturbed by it. And there are others who don't speak that much.

"But you need to identify those who can be pepped up and do well while they're speaking. In a way I'm fortunate to have those players in the side, rather than ask those who are not comfortable doing it. If you have a guy who is able to do it and who should do it, I make it a point that he is doing it. I won't name names but there were individuals who were saying things, within the boundaries."

Despite all the elation over the win, Dhoni said it was important not to get carried away with this victory and urged his players to cultivate the winning habit. "Of course you can't live by it," he said of the recent win. "You need to perform consistently and if you're raising the standard you have to stand by it. You have to keep on doing well."
