Hmmm... Not sure I would just single out Dhoni innings as the reason for India's loss... Agreed he could have scored a little faster but when he walked into bat the situation was really precarious... I would say the quick fall of Sehwag, Rohit & Yuvraj was a much more stronger factor than Dhoni's relatively slow scoring that kept the target out of reach... Anyways, it was a very well fought game that was alive until Uthappa got out...

Mahendra Singh Dhoni was asked to change his wicketkeeping gloves during India's CB Series match against Australia in Sydney after it was found that the webbing between the thumb and the forefinger didn't meet the specifications laid out in the playing conditions.

Ian Healy, the former Australian wicketkeeper and now one of the commentators for Channel 9, later explained to Cricinfo that the webbing was clearly against the laws. "The law states the webbing needs to be flat whereas in this case the webbing was a curved one and also it had a vertical strap running across it."

Dhoni, though, wasn't sure what all the fuss was about. "The match referee wanted the gloves changed," he said. "I've been using them for some time, and they are the exact replica of what I've been using in the Test series." Minutes earlier Dhoni had pulled off a brilliant catch, diving to his right to intercept an inside edge from Adam Gilchrist off Sreesanth.

Law 40.2, which deal with the specifications for wicketkeepers' gloves, states that "if the wicketkeeper wears gloves, they shall have no webbing between the fingers except joining index finger and thumb, where webbing may be inserted as a means of support. If used, the webbing shall be (a) a single piece of non-stretch material which, although it may have facing material attached, shall have no reinforcement or tucks. (b) such that the top edge of the webbing (i) does not protrude beyond the straight line joining the top of the index finger to the top of the thumb; (ii) is taut when a hand wearing the glove has the thumb fully extended."

1. I never used to like Dhoni, even in the England series in which he kept horribly, I was all up for sacking him (He batted well those days and he has improved his keeping these days)
2. I did not watch the match yesterday except the last few overs and if you look at the scorecard, what sticks out like a sore thumb?? Apart from the top order disaster

3. Strike rate of 56.6 is pathetic, no matter what the situation was, [b]especially if we needed to score >6 runs per over. At least he should not have gotten out after playing THAT slow.

Although Dhoni played a pivotal role in helding the innings together. His innings of 36 from 66 balls looks like a dot on a white sheet of paper. I mean to say when the target is 6+ RR especially that strike rate doesnt make any sense to me. When everyone has an agreeable and an impressive run rate and in the end the extra 30 balls looks like has costed the match for the team with us being so close to the target . But he did a great part in stemming the run flow in bringing the spinners after the initial onslaught . His blinder of a catch of gilchrist is another good treat to watch but people have started to talk about the extra webbing he had in his gloves. Informed hubbers can please enlighten me about that !!

All saying that now I want India to beat srilankans and enter the finals convincingly .

The key requisites of one-day cricket are fitness, temperament, and a range of strokes, and Gambhir showed he has all three in abundance � Getty Images

After being pushed on to the back foot by the bowlers throughout this tournament, the batsmen at last had something to smile about - the flat pitch, lack of seam movement and the quick outfield were all ideal for run-making, but for the Indians it was a familiar story of top-order failure followed by a late revival.

Gautam Gambhir's polished century and Robin Uthappa's frenetic fifty shouldn't hide the fact that India's best batsmen have been worryingly absent in the CB Series, and the team has lived and died by the performance of the lower middle-order. When they have made significant contributions - as they did against Australia in Melbourne and against Sri Lanka in Adelaide - the team has gone on to win; when they have floundered, as they did against Australia in a low-scoring game in Adelaide, the result has been embarrassing.

In six out of seven matches so far, India have lost their fourth wicket with less than 100 on the board, leaving Mahendra Singh Dhoni and the rest to do much more than their fair share of work. When the squad for the tournament was announced, there was plenty of concern about the lack of experience in the batting line-up, but ironically, it's the most experienced ones who have been letting the team down so far.

Yuvraj Singh played one exceptional innings against Sri Lanka in Melbourne, but that apart, he has scored 42 in five innings, while the opening act of Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag - both of whom were in smashing form during the Tests - has been even more disappointing: Tendulkar has a highest of 44 from seven innings, while Sehwag has an aggregate of 81 from five. They are the three superstars of the batting order yet they all have an average of less than 20 in the tournament.

Tendulkar has been in fine fettle in both forms of the game over the last couple of years, but just like the fourth innings has been a bit of a jinx for him in Tests, the run-chase has caught him cold in ODIs: over the last three years, Tendulkar averages a mere 26.94 in the 39 matches that India have chased, with 18 single-digit scores. During the same period, he has averaged 56.03 in the 32 innings when India have batted first, with four centuries and just seven scores of less than ten. The last time Tendulkar scored a century in a run-chase was nearly four years ago, when he stroked a glorious 141 in Rawalpindi against Pakistan.

While the pressure of the run-chase hasn't suited Tendulkar, it did little to rein in the flair of Gambhir, who has added consistency to his other virtues to make himself an indispensable member of the batting line-up. He scored fourth-innings hundreds in the semi-final and the final of the Ranji Trophy, and under the lights in Sydney showed once again that he doesn't mind the pressures of a target.

For long Gambhir hasn't been given his due as an ODI player: critics question his technique around off stump and his tendency to open the face of the bat, but the key requisites of one-day cricket are fitness, temperament, and a range of strokes, and Gambhir showed he has all three in abundance.

He came in to bat after India had lost Tendulkar, and they soon slumped to 4 for 51, but not once did Gambhir allow the seemingly hopeless situation to faze him. Equally, he didn't allow himself to get into reckless mode either even though the asking rate was mounting.

When the squad for the tournament was announced, there was plenty of concern about the lack of experience in the batting line-up, but ironically, it's the most experienced ones who have been letting the team down so far

Throughout, he kept up an impressive tempo, running hard between the wickets to keep the score moving, and improvising superbly to strike the boundaries which kept the required rate within achievable limits. He had shown the same composure in big-match situations during the World Twenty20, and further experience and exposure at the highest level will only increase his consistency.

Uthappa proved his utility at No. 7, and has made a strong case to deserve a promotion up the order. The skills required to combat the new ball, though, are very different to those that are required down the order, and Uthappa's energetic knock will probably tempt Dhoni to keep him at that slot.

After a surprisingly strong start to the tournament, India have fallen away somewhat, with three defeats in their last four games, but thanks to the limp Sri Lankans, they are still the favourites to make the final cut. With the top order floundering like it is, though, Sri Lanka will believe they still have a chance to ensure that they'll have all to play for against Australia next Sunday.

This patch of scoring at a lesser rate has been quite evident from the day he took up the captaincy is what (our) argument is . I am not saying its bad but there is no reason to go into a freakkin shell when he comes out to bat. Don't misquote us as our only reason to hub in this sports section is to bash dhoni for heavens sake. yeah guys - Dhoni was the only reason for the defeat yesterday - 36 off 66 - what was he thinking, if he had got out scoring 2 of 3 balls and did his characteristic 'why shud i bother getting out' walk and gone off it would have helped gambhir/uthappa score those 18 odd runs this guy should be sacked too from captaincy - whats he doing scoring 296 runs in 7 matches, lets not bother abt the runs/situations - his strike rate is pathetic , apart from being the second highest run scorer in the tournament he is even more stupid in his captaincy - sack him i say and bring on someone else for the job!! and EVERY media is been writing about the Dhoni's slow innings being reason for the defeat - after all they all have been watching the match too and not at the scorecard

Don't you think you are over reacting? I watched Indian innings for the first 13 overs and IMO, our top order failure is also an important reason for our loss yesterday.

But, Dhoni's uncharacterstic innings surprised me. If I'm not wrong, Dhoni is not a guy who takes lot of time to get settled and whack the balls. Agreed, he had to do the rescue job and he has been doing a good job in that. But wasting 30 balls while chasing 300+ is certainly odd.

Do I have to include a disclaimer that I'm not a Dhoni basher?

AF, Nerd and Others as you say If dhoni had played aggressively and had got out very early you guys would have definitely commented that he doesn't have sense.. at 51/4 he should have come in and played more sensibly and etc... Mind you at 51/4 we were looking down at an embarrassing defeat..

1. First of all Dhoni and Gambhir would have thought of avoiding the embarrassing defeat by atleast scoring 200 or more....

2. When Dhoni came into bat the ball was relatively new, the OZ bowlers were really bowling well and the Powerplay was still on.. If he had to score runs he needed to go over the top in which there was every possibility of him getting out...

3. He knew once Clark,Bracken are finished the part time bowlers will come on and scoring of them will be a lot more easier and that is what they did...

4. At 51/4 most of the guys wud have switched off the TV and thot that India wud be defeated badly... Even I thought that way... But to put up a patnership in between and hang in there made a guy like Uthappa to come in and go after the bowling.. I mean that the patnership between Dhoni and Gambhir set it up for other batsmen to come and have a go at the OZ bowling.

5. In a patnership when your team is 4 down and chasing more than 6 RR the statergy wud be to settle down first and after they get a feel of the pitch one of the batsmen needs to go after the bowling and the other wud hang around... Gambhir went after the bowling because he had been there in the middle for a longer time and Dhoni thot of hanging around but unfortunately got out...

What is the reason for you guys to Blame Dhoni on this defeat??????

Ranjit Shinde: Ravi, it was a very good batting pitch in Sydney and the batsmen who have struggled to put a huge score on the board came to the party today. But it the end, India failed to overhaul Australia's score of 317 in spite of a fighting effort.

Ravi Shastri: It was the best conditions for batting during this one-day series and there's no doubt about that. It was a bright and sunny day and it was a very good toss to win; Ricky Ponting once again won the toss, Mahendra Singh Dhoni is yet to fire [with respect to winning the toss] against the Australians. Australia made most of it because it was the kind of pitch where there was not much lateral movement; it was devoid of any grass, it was nice and firm, and the ball came on to the bat when it was hard and new. So, it was a good time for someone like [Matthew] Hayden and Ponting to get their eye in and get some form, and they did exactly that.

The thing with great players, someone like Ponting, is that when they get a start, reach 20-21, they just convert it into a big score, and that is the hallmark of the top-class players. It was a solid performance by Australia with the bat, and [Andrew] Symonds' innings lower down the order might have just made the difference, because he was explosive and he made a difference of about 15-20 runs to the eventual score.

From India's point of view, if they had got off to a start with the top order then I am sure they could have run Australia even closer

Ranjit Shinde: Ravi you mentioned Matthew Hayden, Ricky Ponting and Andrew Symonds. These were the three batsmen who haven't had a great tournament so far, but they made the most of the situation today. What does this mean for Australia with their three prime batsmen in form now?

Ravi Shastri: It's good momentum for the Australians going into the final, and there is no doubt about that. The first final will be played here in Sydney and if the conditions are similar then I am sure they would look to try and bat in a similar sort of way. But from India's point of view, all is not lost and I thought they put up a very good show and showed a lot of character in hanging there after being 51 for 4 and going on to make a score close to 300. I still feel that they've got to use Robin Uthappa a little more smartly. [Gautam} Gambhir was outstanding, but Uthappa has to be used smartly as and when the occasion demands, which means, at times, coming up the order. I would have had him when Rohit Sharma came out to bat today, just to try and get some momentum going at that stage. Because once the required run-rate got to 9 and 10 it became more and more difficult. But, just hope from India's point of view that the top order fires

Ranjit Shinde: Sachin Tendulkar's poor form continued in this match and even Virender Sehwag looked good but he could not really make it count - what do you reckon is the best opening pair for India from here on?

Ravi Shastri: I think India should stick to the same pair and Gambhir at No. 3. I don't think they should try and experiment at this stage because we are well into the season and there are just two-three matches left, so I don't think it's the right time to try and experiment. From India's point of view, they should stick with the same thing and just hope that Tendulkar fires. He has got another game to try and get some runs against Sri Lanka and then you will get some good wickets in the final.

Ranjit Shinde: Ravi, you have been a big supporter of Gautam Gambhir, and he played a brilliant knock - how would you sum it up [his performance]?

Ravi Shastri: He is a very good player, I have said it before, even on Cricinfo, that we [Indian cricket] have wasted a good year and a half of Gambhir. By now he should have been established and he should have had about 10-12 hundreds under his belt. He has got all the shots in the book, he is very quick on his feet, and for an opening batsman or a man in the top order, he play spin exceptionally well. And the good thing is that on this trip, say someone like Tendulkar is yet to get an hundred in the one day series, and this man [Gambhir] has already got two. This shows that he has got the talent, he has got the potential and he should be backed all the way. If anything at times I feel [the way] he starts his innings, especially when he opens the batting, he plays as if it is a Twenty20 game and he has to go and manufacture shots, where if he is a little more selective in his shot-making then I think he will become more consistent.

Ranjit Shinde: Mahendra Singh Dhoni continued his good form and even Robin Uthappa scored a good half-century - what do you make of the two batting in the lower middle order?

Ravi Shastri: The lower order played well, and it is the top order that has to fire. The lower order has done it's job. India have got another important match against Sri Lanka coming up; it's a day game, and if there is anything that has to be done then I think then it is the top order that has to fire.

In the bowling department, if there is any worry for me then it is the form of Sreesanth, and I think he is just a little low on confidence and needs a good game quickly.

Ranjit Shinde: Ravi you mentioned Sreesanth and the fact that he is low on confidence, do you think India missed the services of the fifth bowler by opting for an extra batsman? And, for the games from here on, do you think India need to play a fifth bowler?

Ravi Shastri: They might; it depends on the conditions. It might be a case if Sreesanth is not firing, get Munaf [Patel] into the side instead of him [Sreesanth] and stick to the same strategy. And if there is grass on the surface in Hobart, then they will have to drop a batsman and get in another bowler.

Ranjit Shinde: With the series nicely poised, Ravi any predictions as to who will play Australia in the final?

Ravi Shastri: I would say Sri Lanka's work is really not that easy. They will have to play brilliant cricket to win the next two games to put India out. I would put my money on Australia-India final.

Dhoni focuses on the positives

Instead of being disappointed over the narrow loss to Australia, Mahendra Singh Dhoni chose to focus on the positives; he praised his bowlers for recovering from the initial assault and lauded Gautam Gambhir and Robin Uthappa for being undaunted by the big total following an early collapse.

"It was quite difficult to recover from the kind of the start," Dhoni said, after India fought back from a dismal 4 for 50 to come within 18 runs of the 317 Australia had amassed. "It was getting closer and closer with the way Gautam and Robin batted. We were fortunate enough to make it a close match."

Ricky Ponting, the Australian captain, also felt his bowlers, who have consistently pulled the team out of holes the batsmen had been creating during the series, relaxed after another bright start. "We started our bowling very well and Brett [Lee] once again showed the knack at getting breakthroughs," he said. "The game got closer than we'd have liked to. It's the first time our bowlers have been under a bit of pressure and we've got some work to do to make sure we get our stuff right."

Ponting was also unstinting in his praise for the architects of India's turnaround. "Gambhir and Uthappa played well," he said. "Gambhir worked the ball around well, especially to third man, hit some good clean shots, ran well. His innings was terrific."

Despite a disastrous start to their chase, India recovered with Gambhir and Dhoni steadying the innings with a 98-run stand. Once Dhoni fell to the accurate Lee, Uthappa - who made a brisk 51 - stitched together a valuable partnership that kept Indian hopes alive. "There was a time when we weren't thinking about getting 300 runs," Dhoni said. "We were just thinking of partnerships."

Dhoni also said that playing the extra batsman, instead of persisting with the five-bowler theory, had paid dividends as the part-time bowlers, Yuvraj Singh and Virender Sehwag, were the most economical. "The way our part-timers took the responsibility and bowled well, I was quite happy."

The Australian batsmen went on the rampage right from the start, with 100 runs coming off the first 12 overs. Powered by Ponting's century, they became the first team in the tournament to go past the 300-mark. Dhoni, though, wasn't concerned over the big total posted and was satisfied with the bowlers' performance. "We did quite well to restrict them to 317 when at one stage it seemed it was going to 340 or even 350."

One worry for India throughout the series has been the inconsistency of some of the top-order batsmen. Though Dhoni wanted the big guns to contribute more, he defended their performances. "Both our openers have been getting out to good balls. It's not as if they are playing rash shots or being irresponsible," he said. "At the international level you have to accept that. The only thing you can do is give your 100% and they are doing that."

Asked whether there would be any changes at the top of the order, Dhoni was reluctant to play his card. "There are options to make Robin or Gautam [Gambhir] open, but the way Gautam is playing I don't want him to open," he said. "Also it depends on the pitches and the conditions, so I'm not sure on that."

anoops I never blamed Sachin for this.. After all he is also a batsman and he was the first one to get out trying to score some quick runs.. But guys who came in after that failed miserably.. So if you guys have to blame someone blame it on the top order and not on the guys who ensured a fightback... This is the point of my arguement...

That was a Great fight by the indians, especially after losing 3 quick wickets at the top. yuvaraj has to make his form count otherwise, we are not going to win this series.

India request match referee to speak to Australians

The Indian team management has written a letter to Jeff Crowe, ICC's match referee, about Australia's 'provoking' behaviour, which they feel triggered the latest spat involving Ishant Sharma in Sunday's one-dayer in Sydney.

Ishant was summoned by Crowe for a disciplinary hearing on Monday morning and was docked 15% of his match fee for pointing Andrew Symonds back to the dressing room after bowling him with a slower ball. Crowe booked Ishant under the Level 1.6 offence under the ICC Code of Conduct which deals with any aggressive action of the bowler pointing the batsmen back to the pavilion.

"The umpires, based on what they had seen in the middle, reported to the match referee about the incident," Dr Bimal Soni, the Indian team manager who was present along with Ishant at the hearing, told Cricinfo.

"Our plea was Symonds provocated [sic] Ishant and that's why he did what he did," Soni said. "He [Crowe] promised he would be speaking with the Australian captain about the matter."

There has a been a lot of bad blood throughout the summer between India and Australia and it was in Sydney that the Harbhajan Singh-Symonds racism row began. Even on that occasion, the Indians felt it was Symonds' provocative language that triggered the incident. The situation reached boiling point with the Indians threatening to abandon the series if the three-match ban handed out to Harbhajan was not lifted.

This time around the Indian team management didn't want to escalate matters. But they have requested the match referee to haul up the Australians. "We could've filed another complaint but we didn't want to prolong another hearing. Instead we made the match referee aware that the Australian have provoking our players in the last two matches and cited specific instances, which is not good for our players," Soni said, as the Indian team was ready to board the flight to Hobart for their final league clash against Sri Lanka.

Asking Tendulkar to bat down the order could help India do better - Peter Roebuck

SYDNEY: Consideration must be given to dropping Sachin Tendulkar down the order. Although still capable of producing dazzling innings, he has been inconsistent against the new ball and India cannot afford to waste him. As could be told from the collapse at the SCG, his wicket is crucial to the hopes and morale of the side.

Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag can combat the faster bowlers in their contrasting ways. Although it might feel strange after all these years at the top of the list, Tendulkar could occupy his Test match position and use his class to guide the middle order through the thickets.

Taking a toll

Age takes a toll of reflexes and footwork. Throughout this campaign, Sanath Jayasuriya has been a shadow of his former self. Repeatedly he has been late on his strokes. Tendulkar has scored runs but has lacked consistency owing to fallibility against high pace. If India is to cause an upset in the finals it must make the most of its resources and that may mean adjusting the order.

Yesterday India�s most experienced batsman was cut down by Brett Lee. Besides exposing the Indian�s vulnerability to extreme pace early in his innings, Lee�s delivery highlighted a technical weakness that has long been part of Tendulkar�s game.

Whereas most batsmen move their back foot across their stumps and into line, he gives himself room to play off-side strokes by leaving his right leg in its original perch. That makes him vulnerable to break-backers.

As a result, Tendulkar has been dismissed clean bowled and leg before a remarkable number of times. Often he finds himself forced to play across the ball. His front leg obstructs his bat and causes him to miss deliveries darting back. In his pomp he could adjust his shot and flick the ball away with a late roll of the wrist reminiscent of Viv Richards. But his peak has passed.

Tendulkar�s dismissal told the tale. Returning from a break, Lee produced a fast and full ball that cut back into the righthander. Tendulkar was beaten all ends up.

Tendulkar is different

The combination of pace and movement was too much for him. Not that his colleagues did much better but less is expected from them, especially the T20 champions, some of whom have stopped scoring runs in other forms of the game. But Tendulkar is different. He is a great batsman.

Not that he needs to be protected. Just that he can be given another role by a team that must take chances in order to beat these hosts. Tendulkar could be asked to take charge of the second part of the innings. Apart from that the main thing India needs is to win the toss.

Nerd - Ishant bowled Symo with a brilliant slow ball (which he seems to have experimented in this match) and was celebrating after taking the wicket, the usual 'jog in his place' celebration and Symo told something - not sure what, something along the lines of 'shut the f*ck' or so. I dont find anything wrong with Dhoni's slow paced innings. It would have been good if his SR was around 60 to 70 anyhow we cant expect much when the Indian batting was unsteady and it is better to see Indian team is 'fighting' than falling down cheaply!

I think Ishant went overboard with his celebrations on dismissing Symonds... But why should Symonds say something directly to Ishant? Again it's Symonds here who started the confrontation... If he had any problem with Ishant's celebration/reaction then he should have complained directly to the umpire. But why instigate/provoke Ishant by passing remarks directly on him?

In the end, Ishant was fined 15% of his match fees... By strict code of conduct, whenever a batsman gets out he has to get out of the wicket without any gestures or remarks both towards the umpires or to the players. In Symonds case, he breached that code of conduct but he is not slapped on his knuckles for that?

Whenever match referees take an action on a particular code of conduct of a player, IMO, they should also take it account the context of the situation and what really provoked the player in doing so�

I seriously think, Uthappa will be better off coming down the order. He is very effective with the old ball, when he can intimidate the bowlers with his walk down the pitch & whip it virtually anywhere he wants. His technique is not sound enough to play the new ball. He moves too much across & hence very likey LBW candidate....

Bajji didnt do well in bowling - he has done his bit with the bat though. Sehwag hasnt had a great series so far. Munaf has done well and stemmed the flow of runs. Sreesanth has been useless in this series.

the poor guy has been opening the bowling for UP and has got 126 wickets at an average of 21. He is a good wicket taking bowler in the domestic circuit. ofcourse he is not gonna be the strike bowler for India but fluke is a big word

anybody performs well in domestic circuit...but in internationational cricket u need lil more speed ..am not saying he shd bowl like brett lee but shd bowl atleast with ishant speed...otherwise he shd be a great swing bowler... therez no point in havinng a bowler like robin singh....lets see...i will be happy if am proved wrong....his batting more or less looks like agarkar...stands, high backlift lam appadye irruku..what yo think....

Agree that we don't exactly know what Symonds said to Ishant after getting out. By going by his reputation and also by his facial expression on the below video, I suspect he would have said anything friendly to Ishant! Anyways, if Symonds was cleaned up then he should have shut up his mouth and a** and just walk straight to the pavilion, isn't? This is where the match refree's should apply some common sense!

This sort of innings will definitely ease the pressure on our middle order and we already have a very good bowling attack. If sachin/Uth/Sehw can negotiate Lee in his first spell, India will defly win Cool
