THE SUBWAY PROBLEM
A large city in the United States had a problem with thefts of light bulbs from its subway system. Thieves would unscrew the light bulbs, leading to cost and security issues. The engineer who was given this challenge could not alter the location of the light bulbs, and he had very little budget to work with, but he came up with a very lateral solution. What was it? |

The shoe shops put single shoes as display items outside the shops. One shop put out left shoes, the other three shops put out right shoes. ur answer is right but i dont think the reason is bcoz theives will have difficulty unscrewing the bulb. the bigger problem for them wud be to find the sockets where the bulb wud fit in. This solution was actually used in some public place (government funded obviously). such left-handed bulb sockets and screwbases are custom manufactured and DEFINITELY ARENT ECONOMICAL. ![]() |

After coloring each student ,the teacher leaves the class. Now students can roam inside the class, notice the color behind any other student but cannot inform him about his color. in that case the simplest method wud be for each one to count the number of blue heads in the class. ppl who get odd answer form one group and ppl who get even answer form other group. ppl with similar colors will be grouped automatically (bcoz blue-headed fellows will count one less than actuall number of blue-heads, the exception being themselves naturally. so if there are odd no. of blue-heads all blue-heads will arrive at an even number while redheads get an odd answer.) so once they group themselves like this they get to know their headcolor by seeing others in the group.
in that case the entire gang gets out immedly. i am not sure why the questioner complicates this by asking a time-dependent answer. |

Here is a good one. Came across this question in a puzzle contest in our college. Me and my friends cracked it and we thoroughly enjoyed doing tat.
An LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) can represent 0 to 9 digits. If you turn the LCD upside-down, some of the numbers still remain valid numbers for example 16 becomes 91. If you index all positive numbers (>0) that can produce valid numbers when you upside down the display (like 1st one is 1, 2nd one is 2, 3rd one 5... 7th one is 10), what is the 1190th number in this series? |

You have got 12 identical looking balls. one among them is different, in the sense, it is either heavier or lighter. You gotta pick the odd one out by using 3 weighings alone, using a simple physical balance. The balance is not graduated, so that u can only find the relative weight of the balls. How do u do that ? |

ice cube problem:
stack one onto another with bottom one upright with water next one upside down empty, and alternate. therefore u have 4 full 3 empty. after some time, before the ice is fully formed, but outer layer of ice is formed, take 3 full ones and subs the 3 empty upside down trays with these trays. And place trays with water in the empty slots. so u have 4 half-formed trays and 3 trays with water. once the 4 trays are completely formed and the 3 trays are half-formed, remove the 4 trays, make the 3 trays take the upside down positions and put in 4 new trays with water. so once all the trays are done, u will have 10 trays of ice cubes, ie 120 ice cubes. alternatively, is it ok to use some other board or sth to separate the trays, like to act as shelves? anyway, both my ans don't seem exceptionally clever. so is there a better soln? |

Multiply both sides by (a+b), we get (a+b)*(a+b)=c*(a+b) Expanding we get, a*a+ab+ba+b*b=ca+cb Rearrange it as follows, a*a+ab-ca=-ba-b*b+cb a(a+b-c)=-b(a+b-c) so a=-b and so a+b=0 Hence 4000+2000=0 ??? Bcoz if a number is to be divisible evenly by 225, it should b divisible by its prime factors.
Prime factor for 225 is 25 and 9. IF a number is to b divisible by 25, it should end with 00 or 25 or 50 or 75. But since 0 and 1 are only required here, the result should definitely end with 00. Also if the sum of digits is divisible by 9, the number wil b divisible by 9. Its simple maths. Since 1 and 0 only should b used, the answer drills down to 11111111100 |

(7X6X5) 04 one step and 04 two step - 120 ways. (5X4X3X2) 02 one step and 05 two step - 30 ways. (6X5) 00 one step and 06 two step - 1 way. So totally 445 ways. Look at this possibility. Batsman A, hits the ball and sets off for three runs, due to over throw the ball reaches the boundary, but he was one short during his 1st or 2nd run and hence given 6 runs instead of 7 runs. So he reaches 100. Batsman B hits a six of the last ball. He also completes 100 and his team also wins. |

There are 3 ponds near a tree. The ponds are so special, such that whatever u put into the pond, it wil get doubled. Now the puzzle is to make equal number of flowers in all 3 ponds. Conditions: 1) U hav to pluck the flowers from the tree only once. 2) Once pluck the flowers from tree, u hav to put all the flowers in 1st pond. Now pick some flowers from 1st pond and put all of them in 2nd pond. And finally choose some flowers from 2nd pond and put them in 3rd pond. So the questions are: 1) Minimum how many flowers u should pluck from the tree (ofcourse, not zero)? 2) How many flowers wil there b in each pond? |

Much simpler puzzle:
Two trains travel toward each other on the same track, beginning 100 miles apart. One train travels at 40 miles per hour; the other travels at 60 miles an hour. A bird starts flight at the same location as the faster train, flying at a speed of 90 miles per hour. When it reaches the slower train, it turns around, flying the other direction at the same speed. When it reaches the faster train again, it turns around -- and so on. When the trains collide, how far will the bird have flown? |

Assuming that the bird spends zero time in changing direction, and moves at constant velocity without any acceleration or deceleration, its distance covered is equal to time taken for collision times velocity. Time taken for collision is 1 hr, so the distance travelled by the bird is 90 miles. |

For the first question...the answer would be 5 and 11.
How he would derive is this. anything multiplied with 18 will be a even number so the multiples of 7 in this case have to be all odd and the sum of this two bags of marbles has to be 233. 7x + 18y = 233 where x is odd. The highest possible multiple of 18 is 198 as it should not exceed the total. insert this into the equation and we get 7x + 18(12) = 233. where 12 * 18 = 198. 7x = 35 x = 5. |

Ten people land on a deserted island. There they find lots of coconuts and a monkey. During their first day they gather coconuts and put them all in a community pile. After working all day they decide to sleep and divide them into ten equal piles the next morning.
That night one castaway wakes up hungry and decides to take his share early. After dividing up the coconuts he finds he is one coconut short of ten equal piles. He also notices the monkey holding one more coconut. So he tries to take the monkey's coconut to have a total evenly divisible by 10. However when he tries to take it the monkey conks him on the head with it and kills him. Later another castaway wakes up hungry and decides to take his share early. On the way to the coconuts he finds the body of the first castaway, which pleases him because he will now be entitled to 1/9 of the total pile. After dividing them up into nine piles he is again one coconut short and tries to take the monkey's coconut. Again, the monkey conks the man on the head and kills him. One by one each of the remaining castaways goes through the same process, until the 10th person to wake up gets the entire pile for himself. What is the smallest number of possible coconuts in the pile, not counting the monkeys? |

(For the purposes of this exercise, thumbs count as fingers, for five fingers per hand.) If you cannot estimate the number then try to gues how long the number would be. |

Lets name the three men as A, B and C. And let the truth teller will be referred to as T, the liar as L, and the random answerer as R. Now one must actually know the truth in order to tell it or to lie about it. So, we need to ask a question to A that he cannot possible know the answer to, ie: “will B and C both answer my question truthfully?” the only person who can give an answer is R. Neither T nor L know the truth, thus they cannot answer the question, either yes or know. So, if A is R, then you will get a yes or no. Now you just need to determine if B is T or L. This can be done with a simple question such as “Are you a male?”. If A is T or L, they will be unable to answer, now you need to determine if A is T or L. Do this the same way as above. If A is T, simply ask them is B is the one who always lies. If A is L, ask them if B always tells the truth, if they answer yes, then B is R, if they answer no, then B is T. |

What position are you in? 2. If you overtake the last person, then you are in which position ? 3. This must be done in your head only. Do NOT use paper and pencil or a calculator. Take 1000 and add 40 to it. Now add another 1000. Now add 30. Add another 1000. Now add 20. Now add another 1000. Now add 10. What is the total? 4. Mary's father has five daughters: Nana, Nene, Nini, Nono. What is the name of the fifth daughter? |

A serene river flows beneath a tall bridge.
There's tranquility all around. But this silence is not of the living, but of death. For there are two corpses on the ground near the bridge. There's just a pile of rope near the corpses. We know that these two persons did not commit suicide. There's no jungle nearby, so a wild animal couldnt have killed them. There are no bullet or knife injuries on the bodies. No poison bottles, pills, etc. Assume that no one else came that way for atleast a fortnight. They were both healthy persons in the prime of their life. So they didnt die of heart attack or similar reasons. ![]() |

In another scenario one person is an onlooker who stands below the bridge. Again the rope gives way and the second person lands on the onlooker. Given the height of the bridge falling on another person does not cushion the fall. I've read somewhere that beyond a certain height jumping into a pool of water has the same effect as landing on soft earth. |

Why was he not afraid about his situation ? ( this is not a straightforward puzzle ! ) |

Very good sanjinika! Only one pick is needed. You will pick nut-nut-bolt, or bolt-bolt-nut. From this you can find the box that has only the nuts, or only the bolts. And look at the label. If the label is right, then you know that the remaining 2 boxes are labeled wrong, so interchange the labels for those boxes. If the first box is labeled wrong then interchange the labels between the first box, and the box that has the label that belongs to the first box! |

There is a class of strength 60,every student in the class being very honest, very clever, very intellegent. The teacher comes in,and marks either blue or red color on the back of each student, students being unaware of the color behind them, and no one left uncolored and with at least one student being colored either red or blue. After coloring each student ,the teacher leaves the class. Now students can roam inside the class, notice the color behind any other student but cannot inform him about his color. Now- The teacher walks in every hour and asks "Those who are sure about blue color behind them may come out of class!" p So the question is -- How many students will come out at 1st hour How many at 2nd hour? | | | |How many at nth hour? </B. |

gokul prathap, the solution becomes much simpler using relative speeds and relative distances
marching rate of column = m1 marching rate of soldier = m2 distance where the first soldier meets the second soldier = d from the starting point time taken to meet the last soldier = t time taken to join the ranks after delivering message = t1 the relative speed of the soldier before delivering message = m2+m1. relative distance covered before delivering message = 1 mile relative speed of the soldier after delivering message = m2-m1 relative distance covered after delivering message = 1 mile thus, t = 1/(m1+m2), d = m2/(m1+m2) or (m1/m2) = (1-d)/d -----------(a) t1 = 1/(m2-m1), d = m1/(m2-m1) or (m1/m2) = d/(d+1) -----------(b) equating (a) and (b), d = sqrt(1/2) or total distance traveled is 1+2*0.707 ~ 2.4 |

7 servants. 2**7=128.
Making use of just 7 binary digits any number between 1 and 127 can be represented. 100 falls very well within the range. servant 1 drinks from can 1 (1) servant two drinks from can 2. (1 0) servants one and two drink from can 3. ( 1 1) servant three drinks from can 4 ( 1 0 0) and so on. At the end , say servants 1,3,4 and 6 die. Then the binary equivalent of the can no should be 101101. (0 for alive and 1 for dead) or in base 10 it is 32+8+4+1=45th can. suppose can no 10 is poisoned. then it would have been consumed only by servants 2 and 4 (1010). |

a question somewhat similar

The answer to this is as below:
let n be the no of boys be marked blue Now suppose only boy is being marked blue i.e n=1 , then that boy does not see anybody else marked in blue and hence he comes out in the first hour.( remember that at least one student is colored either red or blue) i.e if n= 1 , one boy comes out during the first hour and thats it. now if n=2 Both of them who are marked blue get to know that there is already one boy who is marked blue. But both of them do not come out in the first hour as they think that it is only the other boy who has been marked blue. Now since the other boy does not come in the 1st hour, they come to know that there is another boy who has been marked blue but since they do not find anyone else, they get to know that it is none other than themselves and both of them come out in the second hour. i.e if n=2, then two come out in the second hour......... if n= 4, each one of the boys marked blue know three other boys who are marked blue, but if in the third hour none of them come out then they get to know that there is one more who has been marked blue. But since thay can find only three they conclude that they have been marked blue and hence all the four come out in the fourth hour... Similarly it works out that if there are n boys marked blue, then n number of them come out in the nth hour. ![]() |

even if the no of students n=2 , if one person doesn't make a move the other person realizes instantly that the color on his back is blue and steps forward.
