Mothers win over wives/girlfriends Surveys done in Australia reveal that mothers win when getting gifts from men!!! A comparison of the spending on gifts between Mother's Day and Valentine's Day shows the Mom is still a boy's best friend. Men bought more gifts and more expensive gifts for Mother's Day than on Valentine's.... Intersting, huh? |

Lawrence Summers said the money would be used to reform the way women in engineering and science are treated. The recommendations came from two task forces set up by Dr Summers at the height of anger over his comments in January, for which he has apologised. He suggested women had less "intrinsic aptitude" than men for science. The recommendations include appointing a senior vice provost to promote diversity and faculty development, as well as mentoring, child care and late-night transport. Dr Summer's office said reforms would be made for women "at every point along the pipeline", from undergraduates to faculty ranks. "Universities like Harvard were designed a long time ago, in many respects, by men for men," he told a news conference. "To fully succeed on these issues we're going to have to address issues of culture." Confidence vote Dr Summers sparked fury when he suggested at a seminar in January that one reason men outperformed women in maths and science was genetics, not just experience. Several guests walked out of the conference after hearing the comments. Dr Summers said later that the shortage of senior female academics was partly caused by child-minding duties, which restricted working hours. He lost a confidence vote by the university's Faculty of Arts and Science but, as the body has no power to punish him, he did not resign. Harvard's governing body, to whom he answers, has expressed its support of him. Apologising repeatedly for his remarks, Dr Summers set up the two task forces - one to focus on women at Harvard, and one considering women in science in general. |

Pirabakaran has nothing to do with the hill country Tanils and had never done anything to uplift the life of those people. Arumugam Thondaman - who reperesents the Indian hill country Tamils - hardly gives a damn to Pirabakaran. The Indian hill country people will just follow what Arumugam says and will never follow Pirabakaran or the Nothern Tamils or try to adopt their attitude, culture or values. |

Much like our tamil nadu dialects, SL tamil has its own dialects among the natives of Jaffna, Vanni and Batticaloa. As far the caste equations among tamils, its not just between SL and Indian tamils, even within SL tamils there is very strong caste-consciousness...I have noticed this coming into the picture even among the dating lives of expatriate sri lankan tamils. It is sad that even despite having a common enemy, sri lankan tamils are not able to eliminate this factor. Bebeto, Roshan Can you pls shed more light on the status of the Hill Country tamils as of today? I was going through a site(SL govt run) which tried to make some anti-LTTE propaganda over the recent shooting of a jaffna professor - the site was pointing to caste equations and even claims that upto 15% of the LTTE are the hill country tamils, who are brainwashed and conscripted as easy targets. (Sounded like the British divide-and-rule policy to me) I am curious how this is possible since the life of the hill country tamils is shaped around the Sinhala central districts and they are even closer to the Sinhala culture than the Northern Sri Lankan tamils. Can you give some information about the demographics of the tamils living in North and North-East, especially the ones recruited by the LTTE? Also, what percentage of the tamils around Kandy, Anuradhapura are Sri lankan and indian? |

The thing I don't understand is that Nguyen was on his way to Australia and he was not entering Malaysia! International Airports are regarded as Noman's land. For example if you are travelling with an Indian Aircraft or Pakistani vessel then you are on Indian territory in the case of the airliner and on Pakistani soil if by ship. Incase of Shanmugam Murugesu the matter is different as he was travelling overland. What happened to that 2.2 pounds of Ganja? I would have been flying for quite a long while all day and all night with this amount. The worth of it here about 5500,- Euro. |

I believe, there is a debate going on in Canada about "making mirijuana a "legal drug". Shanmugam would be living now if he dealt with marijuana in Canada or south-america instead of singapore |

But you would be wrong. Studies of autopsies have shown that doctors seriously misdiagnose fatal illnesses about 20 percent of the time. So millions of patients are being treated for the wrong disease. As shocking as that is, the more astonishing fact may be that the rate has not really changed since the 1930's. all this talk of indian economy booming is a farce. what an irony ? people who toil very hard to raise crops and harvest it earn very less when compared to guys who sit idly in air conditioned rooms doing nothing but simply staring at junks of code. People living in the cities get richer and richer while the actual benefits of technological development hardly reaches the country side . The rift between the rich and poor is becoming wider and wider. The poor farmers are always at the mercy of the money lenders. .Something need to be done. maybe adoption of a socialist regime like the erstwhile ussr. That would only spell doom. |

Democracy to a totalitarian state!!!!! Iraq is on the fringe of civil war and with a bomb going off every day there is no chance for democracy. May be some one in the GREAT USA has to realize that democracy may not be the ultimate solution for all countries in the world. It not essential that what works for one country has to work for the other as well. All Bush has succeeded in doing is making Iraq another fertile breeding ground for terrorists. |

I almost wanted to put this in the joke section. Seriously as I started to read, I was expecting a good laugh at the end. But it's a real story. A calf born with two legs only. Never heard of this in my life. Is it a sign of the times? May be the lord is trying to say to us humans of today that we are not really better than certain lower class animals because we have two legs. Now such animals are starting to have two legs too. ![]() ![]() ![]() _____________ Here is the story picked from a Guyanese newspaper: A calf belonging to Ramlogan Singh, a cattle and poultry farmer of Jagdeo Street, Unity, Mahaica, East Coast Demerara, was born on Saturday with only two legs. The 70-year-old Singh, who was not at home at the time, said he was eagerly looking forward to the birth of the new calf but was sad when he learnt by telephone that the animal was born with only two legs. "I was worried about it and ah hardly slept the night because ah mind the cow for so long," he said. He said he was fortunate though that a young girl, Shelisha Khan, who lives nearby and loves to help him take care of the cow, was around to render assistance. Khan said she found the calf in a drain and rushed to pull it out. When she realized that it had only two legs, she was so dumfounded, she actually went back into the drain in search of the other two. The girl then milked the cow and bottle-fed the calf, which cannot stand up to feed. Singh said when Khan contacted him to give him the news he did not believe her. "I thought she was joking so ah checked right away when ah reach home the night." Singh has been a farmer for almost all his life and this is the first time he has experienced anything like this. He recalls that the mother of the calf was born a twin over 12 years ago. This is the eighth calf for the cow. Singh said usually, after the birth, he would take the cow away from her calves so she could graze. But this time the cow refuses to leave her calf. This newspaper observed the cow licking her young about the body, especially the spot where the legs were supposed to be. Singh said the calf attempts to stand and walk, but falls and ends up dragging to get around. He plans to seek the advice of the Ministry of Agriculture on how to care for the calf, which was born with "good size and appears to be quite healthy." In the meantime, he is thinking of creating a special "hammock" to balance the calf while it stands on its back legs to feed from the mother. |

Iraq invasion a 'disaster', admits Blair
Saturday, 18 November , 2006, 10:29 London: Admitting that the western forces have been powerless in containing the violence in Iraq, British Prime Minister Tony Blair said the invasion had been "disastrous". Challenged in an interview on Al-Jazeera's new English-language channel that the Western intervention in Iraq had "so far been pretty much of a disaster", Blair said: "It has." Blair admitted that western forces have been powerless to stop the violence, but stopped short of accepting the blame for plunging Iraq to the brink of civil war - blaming instead the insurgent uprising that has killed 125 British troops. But his admission in the interview will be seen as an historic climb-down for Blair, who has always fought to put a positive gloss on often disastrous events. Blair went on to say: "It has, but you see what I say to people is why is it difficult in Iraq? It is not difficult because of some accident in planning, but there is a deliberate strategy, Al-Qaeda with Sunni insurgents on one hand, Iranian-backed elements with Shia militia on the other, to create a situation in which the will of the majority for peace is displaced by the will of the minority for war." According to a report in The Times, his frank remarks came on the day that one of his most loyal ministers was reported to have described the war as "his big mistake in foreign affairs". Margaret Hodge was said to have accused Blair of espousing "moral imperialism", remarks that she denied through an aide but which were recalled by people who attended the private meeting at which she was alleged to have made them. Blair was speaking to Sir David Frost on the first edition of his Frost Over the World programme on Al-Jazeera International, which was launched on Wednesday. His appearance is a boost for the network, which was once denounced as propaganda by Donald Rumsfeld, the former US Defence Secretary, and is perhaps best known in Britain for broadcasting tapes from Osama bin Laden and al-Qaeda. After his apparent admission that the intervention had been a disaster, Blair insisted: "We are not walking away from Iraq. We will stay for as long as the government needs us to stay.” "And the reason for that is that what is happening in Iraq, as in Afghanistan, as elsewhere in parts of the Middle East, is a struggle between the decent majority of people, who want to live in peace together, and those who have an extreme and perverted and warped view of Islam, who want to create war," he said. "In those circumstances, our task has got to be to stand up for the moderates and the democrats against the extremists and the sectarians, Blair said adding that they are testing our will at the moment, and our will has not to be found wanting." Repeating his appeal to Iran and Syria to work together for Middle East peace Blair rejected as absurd suggestions that his readiness to work with the two countries amounted to appeasement. He said that he had a message for Tehran and Damascus: "If you are prepared to be part of the solution, there is a partnership available to you. But at the moment, and this is particularly so in respect of what Iran is doing in supporting terrorism throughout the Middle East and acting in breach of its nuclear weapons obligations, you are behaving in such a way that makes such a partnership impossible." |

NBC, MSNBC and news services Updated: 2 minutes ago BLACKSBURG, Va. - A 23-year-old senior from South Korea whose creative writing was so disturbing that he was referred to the school’s counseling service was behind the massacre of at least 30 people locked inside a university classroom building in the deadliest shooting rampage in modern U.S. history, the university said Tuesday. Ballistics tests also found that one of the guns used in that attack was also used in a shooting two hours earlier at a dormitory that left two people dead at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Virginia State Police said. Police identified the shooter as Cho Seung-Hui (pronounced Choh Suhng-whee), of Centreville, Va., who was a senior in the English Department at Virginia Tech. Cho, a resident alien who immigrated to the United States from South Korea in 1992, lived on campus in Harper Residence Hall. The bloodbath ended with Cho’s suicide, bringing the death toll from two separate shootings — first at the dormitory, then in a classroom building — to 33 and stamping the campus in the picturesque Blue Ridge Mountains with unspeakable tragedy. ‘He was a loner’ Professor Carolyn Rude, chairwoman of the university’s English department, said she did not personally know the gunman. But she said she spoke with Lucinda Roy, the department’s director of creative writing, who had Cho in one of her classes and described him as “troubled.” “There was some concern about him,” Rude told The Associated Press. “Sometimes, in creative writing, people reveal things and you never know if it’s creative or if they’re describing things, if they’re imagining things or just how real it might be. But we’re all alert to not ignore things ike this.” She said Cho was referred to the counseling service, but she said she did not know when or what the outcome was. Rude refused to release any of his writings or his grades, citing privacy laws. NBC News’ Pete Williams reported that police had found a note in which Cho listed “random grievances,” but few other details were immediately available. That seemed in keeping for a young man who apparently left little impression in the Virginia Tech community. “He was a loner, and we’re having difficulty finding information about him,” said Larry Hincker, the university’s associate vice president for community relations. Cho’s fellow residents of Harper Hall said few people knew the gunman, who kept to himself. “He can’t have been an outgoing kind of person,” Meredith Daly, 19, of Danville, Va., told MSNBC.com’s Bill Dedman. Students live six to a suite, said Stephen Scott, a freshman engineering student from Marlton, N.J., and do not necessarily know other residents. Scott said police and FBI agents went through the dorm Monday night showing a picture of Cho and trying to find anybody who recognized or knew him. He did not know whether they were successful. In Centreville, where Cho’s family lived in an off-white, two-story townhouse, people who knew Cho concurred that he kept to himself. “He was very quiet, always by himself,” said Abdul Shash, a neighbor. Shash said Cho spent a lot of his free time playing basketball and would not respond if someone greeted him. He described the family as quiet. South Korea’s Foreign Ministry expressed its condolences, saying that there was no known motive for the shootings and that South Korea hoped the tragedy would not “stir up racial prejudice or confrontation.” Ballistics evidence points to student Two law enforcement officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because the information had not been officially announced, said Cho’s fingerprints were found on the two guns used in the shootings. The serial numbers had been filed off, the officials said. Law enforcement officials told Williams that Cho was carrying a backpack that contained receipts for the purchase of a Glock 9mm pistol in March. As a permanent legal resident, Cho was eligible to buy a handgun unless he had been convicted of any felony criminal charges. Cho renewed his green card in late 2003 and would have undergone a background check at that time, immigration officials told NBC affiliate WSLS-TV of Roanoke. If a criminal record had showed up then, officials would have denied the renewal, they said. Col. Steve Flaherty, superintendent of the Virginia State Police, said it was reasonable to assume that Cho was the shooter in both attacks but that the link was yet definitive. “There’s no evidence of any accomplice at either event, but we’re exploring the possibility,” he said. At least 26 people were taken to hospitals after the second attack, some of them seriously injured. Twelve students remained in hospitals in stable condition Tuesday, and most were expected to be released soon, NBC News’ Michelle Kosinski reported from Montgomery Regional Medical Center. Bush to attend service State, local and federal investigators spent the night collecting, processing and analyzing evidence from within Norris Hall, which housed engineering classes, offices and laboratories. The deceased were recovered from at least four classrooms on the second floor and a stairwell. Cho was discovered in a classroom among the victims. All of the deceased were transported to the medical examiner’s office in Roanoke for examination and identification. The names of the deceased students and faculty will be released once all of the victims are positively identified and their families are notified. President Bush planned to attend a memorial service Tuesday afternoon at the university, the White House said, and Gov. Timothy Kaine was flying back to Virginia from Tokyo for the 2 p.m. convocation. |

Malaysia's Islamic officials seize baby from mother who sought a Hindu life
The Associated Press Published: April 6, 2007 KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia: Islamic authorities took away the baby of a Muslim woman who is living as a Hindu in defiance of the law in the latest case of religious conflict straining ties in multiethnic Malaysia, officials said Friday. Revathi Masoosai's 15-month-old daughter was taken by the Islamic Religious Department in southern Malacca state on March 26 and handed to Revathi's Muslim mother, said department enforcement officer Mohamad Imran Ahmad. "The baby's grandmother has custody of her for now," Mohamad Imran told The Associated Press. Revathi, an ethnic Indian, is being held in a rehabilitation center run by Islamic authorities for her religious transgression. The baby was with Revathi's husband when she was seized. He has filed a police complaint, but it was not clear if he plans to take the case to court. Meanwhile, the baby will stay with her grandmother. "When the baby's mother is released, she can try to regain custody if she wants to," said Mohamad Imran without elaborating. The case, which was made public by the opposition Democratic Action Party on Thursday, highlights an increasing number of spats affecting the religious and family rights of the ethnic Indian and Chinese minorities. Indians, who form about 8 percent of Malaysia's 26 million people, are mostly Hindus while some are Christians, Muslims and Sikhs. Activists say a string of recent disputes have ended in favor of Muslims - who comprise nearly 60 percent of the population - and strained ethnic relations in this multicultural nation, which has enjoyed racial peace for nearly four decades. Revathi, 29, was born to Indian Muslim parents who gave her a Muslim name, Siti Fatimah. However, Revathi claims she was raised as a Hindu by her grandmother and changed her name in 2001, said Chong Eng, an opposition member of Parliament. Revathi married Suresh Veerappan in 2004 according to Hindu rites. The marriage has not been legally registered because Suresh would have had to convert to Islam first. Revathi's official identification documents state she is Muslim because Malaysians who are born as Muslims cannot legally convert. The Islamic Religious Department apparently learned of Revathi's case after she gave birth. Revathi was detained in January and taken to a rehabilitation center in central Malaysia where she is expected to be held until at least mid-April to undergo religious counseling, Chong said. "Separating mother and child ... is inhuman," Chong said in a statement. A custody battle would be complicated because Islamic officials and Revathi's mother would likely seek to try the case in Islamic Shariah court, which handles religious, family and personal law disputes involving Muslims. Non-Muslims turn to civil courts to settle these issues. But the secular courts have generally avoided taking a position in such disputes between Muslims and non-Muslims, leaving it to the Shariah system, where verdicts have often favored Muslims. LATEST DEVELOPMENT Revathi Masoosai/Siti Fatimah's 100-day detention for Islamic rehabilitation which ends today has been extended by the Malacca Syariah Court for another 80 days. Revathi's husband, Suresh Veerapan was informed by Malacca Syariah Court officials that her detention at the Faith Rehabilitation Centre in Ulu Yam has been extended by 80 days. When Suresh Veerapan asked for the reasons, an official told him "she did not cooperate during the 100-day stay" which ended today. His demand for a copy of the court order on the extension was denied. Revathi was not brought to the Malacca court from Ulu Yam in Selangor. Dozens of relatives were waiting to see her. Revathi, who suffers from asthma, had told her husband last week that she was not taken to a doctor although she was sick. It is sad and tragic that this heart-rending tale of the father, mother and baby girl being forcibly separated into three different locations by law and religion had not been resolved today, despite a memorandum by DAP MPs to the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi last week. |

Rubber tapper wins custody By DHARMENDER SINGH SHAH ALAM: Rubber tapper P. Marimuthu won custody of his six children at the High Court here yesterday, after his Muslim wife agreed to allow him to raise them as Hindus. His wife, Raimah Bibi Noordin, claimed in an affidavit that she was born as a Muslim and wished to continue professing the faith. She added, however, she had no objection to hand over her children – whose religion is stated as Hindu in their birth certificates – to be raised by their father, a Hindu. Raimah will continue to live separately at her house in Bandar Utama Batang Kali but will have full access to the children, aged five to 12. Marimuthu, 44, filed an application last month claiming the Selangor Islamic Affairs Department (JAIS) had forcibly taken his wife and the children from their home in Kampung Baru Tambahan, Ulu Yam Lama on the morning of April 2. He alleged the officers did not give any reason why Raimah and the children were being detained. Also, he added, the officers did not serve any detention order to his wife or children. Marimuthu further claimed that the officers threatened to arrest him and charge him with khalwat (close proximity) if he attempted to stop them. After the incident, he lodged a report at the Ulu Yam Baru police station. His lawyer, Karpal Singh, told the court that a settlement had been reached between the couple and a habeas corpus application was being withdrawn. Raimah, who came to court in a baju kurung and scarf, was seen weeping as she confirmed her decision before judge Datuk Su Geok Yiam. State legal adviser Datuk Zauyah Be Loth Khan, representing JAIS, told the court that the department had not detained Raimah. Speaking to reporters outside the court, Karpal Singh said he met Raimah at his office on Wednesday and received her affidavit on handing over the custody of the children. He said the case set a precedence, where custody of children could be given to a non-Muslim spouse. “The couple will remain married as Marimuthu does not wish to divorce her but they will live separately,” he said. |

Usage of Tamil language fast declining
IN a special report, Makkal Osai, said that according to Unesco, Tamil language usage was declining throughout the world. The reasons cited were modernisation, changes in culture and the influence of Western ideas. There was also no motivation or research done to promote the wider usage of Tamil worldwide. The report said that there were about 12.3 million Tamils in the world and only 7.4 million used Tamil. The rest did not know how to read, write or even speak Tamil. A survey conducted by Unesco in 2000 revealed that 1.7 million had no knowledge of Tamil and this figure will go up by 3.2% in the next six years. The report attributed the decline to parents not encouraging their children to use Tamil. It also said that many schools in South India, where Tamil is predominantly spoken, were now giving more importance to English. M. Ravindran, secretary of the Johor Silambam Association said that parents in Malaysia should be encouraged to enrol children in Tamil schools if the language was to be passed on to the next generation. Tamil researcher Dr Purushothaman said that Tamil organisations should organise awareness campaigns to highlight the importance of Tamil so that Tamils could take pride in their own language. |

I thank you for all the support given. Some of the parents and I met the school authorities on Sunday and here is there outcome.
As expected the PIBG YDP did not attend the meeting, although earlier he personally told me he will. The HM agreed that the movie is not suitable to be shown in school. He trully regretted it happened. The HM said the movie was brought by a Standard 5 student and played by the teachers. How weird????????? HM questioned why he was not contacted before escalating. Reply given- the email was sent on this issue but no response for 4 days. Email sent on another issue but no response for more than 1 month. So it was perceived that the school not interested in replying. Reasonable opportunity given to school, but they did not use it. HM said that he didn’t know there was an email, but the PK Academic admitted reading and didn’t bother to tell the HM. The PK Academic was harping on the matter that it was shown only on 1 day. But it doesn’t matter, even for 1 hour the movie must not be shown in school. The movie is rated as 18SG, therefore not meant for primary school kids. It is a violation of Copyright Act, the movie is for home viewing only. Agreement achieved in summary: The school must respond all forms of communication, including emails,, within 1 working day. The school will make a written reply on this issue. The school will not show movies in schools. A proper program need to be made if no classes is conducted on certain times. Watching movies or placing the students in library is not a solution. Dear bloggers, I would like to thank you too. |

PORT KLANG: K. Narani had always wanted to see her son married. But the tears of the guests at the wedding ceremony yesterday were of both joy and sorrow.
In a simple gesture of love for his mother, P. Sanjeevi Rajan married R. Sasikalah in front of his mother’s body during her funeral at the family’s house here. Fate had been cruel to the family, as 47-year-old Narani died of a heart attack in Chennai, India, on Sunday while shopping for sarees and other accessories for the wedding which had been originally scheduled for June 30. When her body was brought to the house at noon yesterday, Narani’s grieving husband Perumal suggested that Sanjeevi Rajan honour his mother’s dream of seeing her son married. Bride and groom consented, and after consulting with Sasikalah’s family, it was agreed that the wedding would go ahead. Two priests were brought to the house, and between 2pm and 3pm, they conducted all the usual wedding ceremonies minus the yagna (fire ceremony). Sasikalah, 25, was dressed in a blue saree while Sanjeevi Rajan wore the traditional vesthi and jippa. Sanjeevi Rajan, 28, also performed the patha pooja, where he washed the feet of his parents. For this ceremony, Perumal stood beside the body of Narani. The thali was then placed in the mother’s hand before Sanjeevi Rajan tied it around Sasikalah’s neck. Instead of the usual yellow rice, flowers were given to those present in the family hall to bless the couple. Later, Sanjeevi Rajan said though a marriage in such circumstances was unheard of, he was glad that it took place the way it did. "I could have got married in the temple later, but would my mother be there? At least now, my mother is still here. My parents were side by side. It means the world to me. "It’s both the saddest and happiest day for me in one go," he said wiping away his tears. Sasikalah said she was fortunate to have her wedding in front of her mother-in-law. "I got the chance to pay my last respects as the daughter-in-law and it means a lot to me." Her father, R. Rajaratnam, said when Perumal came up with the idea, he discussed it with family members and everyone felt that it was a good suggestion. "It’s definitely worth it. Narani wanted to see the wedding and Sanjeevi Rajan wanted his mother to be present at his wedding. Both got their wishes." As for the wedding invitations that have been sent out, Rajaratnam said everyone would be informed about what had happened. However, he said the couple would get their marriage registered at the temple on June 30. |

A visit to a temple turns out to be an uplifting experience.
WHEEL POWER:BY ANTHONY THANASAYAN WHAT do tinkling bells, a pride of peacocks, a monkey, together with a company of wheelchairs and a white cane, have in common on Father's Day? I bet you will never guess! It all transpired during a Father's Day celebration my friends and I attended last week. There I was on the third Sunday morning of June, sleepy and struggling to put on my pants and shoes. Next, I had to huff and puff and heave myself into my wheelchair and head for my car. My buddy Andrew Martin, who usually helps me get dressed for big, outdoor events, was unfortunately not with me that day. He was away in Macau. Sitting on my lap and raring to go was Reba, Andrew's medium-sized Shetland sheepdog. She was determined to play mascot for Petpositive, a newly registered non-profit society I helped form that assists disabled and elderly Malaysians to lead happy lives through animal companionship. My role that morning was that of president of the charity. We were to attend a simple function followed by a vegetarian lunch at the Hanuman Temple in Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur. The welcome was also extended to any four-footed friends that we decided to bring along. After all, the treasurer pointed out that some of their long-time local residents included four peacocks, several dogs and a tame monkey. About a dozen of us, including an elderly blind man, attended a brief prayer ceremony. After that, we were presented with gifts of rice, tins of milk and other groceries. Even Reba did not to go away empty-handed. The priests at the temple performed a special blessing on her. We were all amazed to see how accepting the temple folk were towards the animals. Some of the dogs mingled with the worshippers during the religious rites. No one shooed them away. As for our wheelchairs, the crowd didn't seem to mind them filling up space in the temple. Those who could walk politely squeezed past us. Others made a detour to free up more space for us. What also surprised me was that none of the devotees stared at us. From our experience, most people usually do that when they see the disabled for the first time. Later we discovered that construction was underway. The treasurer told us that once the new temple was built, it will include disabled-friendly features such as ramps and wheelchair-accessib le toilets. My friends and I were thrilled to hear that, especially since some of our members had complained about places of worship where worshippers in wheelchairs were stopped in their tracks and not allowed in because "temples are holy and sacred places". Then there is the other extreme where people excuse us from entering places of worship because they think it is too hard for us to do so because of our disabilities. This couldn't be further from the truth. For it is through spiritual sources that many of us find the peace, understanding and strength to carry on with life. |

Woman freed from Islamic centre, court dismisses habeas corpus application
R.Surenthira Kumar SHAH ALAM (July 6, 2007): The High Court here today dismissed an application by the husband of a woman whom he claimed was unlawfully detained for 180 days in an Islamic faith rehabilitation centre in Hulu Yam Baru in Batang Kali, Selangor. Lawyers representing Siti Fatimah Abdul Karim's husband V.Suresh had prepared to argue the Habeas Corpus application but were only informed late yesterday about her release from the Baitul Aman Faith Rehabilitation Centre in Hulu Yam. The remand period, initially for 80 days and then extended to 100 days, was supposed to expire midnight today. Suresh had claimed his wife, who goes by the name M.Revathi, 29, was being unlawfully detained in the centre after she was taken away by officials from the Malacca Islamic Religious Council officers (MAIM) when she turned up at the Syariah court on Jan 8. Lawyer representing the Superintendent of the centre and the Selangor Islamic Religious Council (MAIS) Mohamed Haniff Khatri Abdulla told the court Siti Fayimah was released from detention and ordered to be placed under the custodyof her parents following a decision by the Syariah court in Malacca yesterday. "Since the Syariah court in it's wisdom, based on the various state enactments, has made an order to release Siti Fatimah, she is no longer under detention and therefore this application becomes redundant," said Mohamed Haniff Khatri. He cited several Federal Court cases and decisions on the issue to support his argument and appealed to judge Datuk Su Geok Yiam to dismiss the application. Lawyer representing Suresh, Karpal Singh appealed to the court for the case to be heard despite it becoming academic after Revathi's release. He said it was necessary for the matter to be heard as it was a case of public interest and perhaps it was an appropriate time for the court to ventilate further on the case because there was an increasing trend in such cases. Karpal also cited some Federal Court cases on the issue and appealed to the court to give Revathi a chance to tell the court what transpired in the Syariah court. He also said the Syariah court's order for Revathi's parents to take custody of her was odd because she was no longer a minor and is married. Judge Datuk Su Geok Yiam, in her decision, said since Siti Fatimah was no longer under detention and therefore she had no choice but to dismiss the case. "The law on this issue is clear, once the subject matter of a habeas corpus application is no longer under detention, the court has no jurisdiction to hear the application," said Su. Later outside the courtroom, Revathi claimed the following took place at the centre: not given medical attention when she was sick; no proper food and was also forced to consume beef; forced to wear headscarf; not allowed to meet her 18-month-old daughter Diviya Dharshini; and threatened her "thali" (saffron coloured woven thread or gold chain worn around the neck by Indian women who are married) would be removed and forced to embrace Islam. She added her husband took care of their daughter before Diviya Dharshini was handed over to her parents' custody. Revathi said her parents had converted to Islam before her birth but she was raised as a Hindu by her grandmother. She married Suresh in March 2004 according to Hindu rites in a temple in Malacca, but the marriage was not registered. Revathi had sought to renounce Islam and was told to go throught the Syariah court to obtain the necessary approvals and certificate when she was taken away by MAIM officers for rehabilitation. The couple is now having difficulties registering the birth of Diviya Dharshini. MAIM spokesman Tuah Atan, who was present in court, said Siti Fatimah is a Muslim and her parents were given custody to enable her to continue living as a Muslim. He said they will assist Siti Fatimah to "return to the right path" in due time. Suresh, meanwhile, said he is glad his wife has been released but was uneasy about the Syariah court order handing custody of his wife to her parents, adding he will seek advice from his lawyers on the next course of action. Mohamed Haniff Khatri was assisted by counsels Zainul Rijal Abu Bakar, Rahim Sinwan and Abdul Halim Bahari. Karpal was assisted by J.Amardas and Nicholas Netto while Edward Saw held a watching brief for the Malaysian Bar and Sunil Lopez for the Malaysian Consultative Council on Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Sikhism and Taoism (MCCBCHST). |

THE OTHER MALAYSIA Malaysia’s shame
Underneath the glitz and glamour of Malaysia’s polished façade, the unfettered religious bureaucracy of the country points to a growing tide of Malay-Muslim communitarianism that is increasingly intolerant and demanding a greater slice of public space It seems as if there are some folk Malaysia today who believe that the country cannot get enough bad publicity. Over the past few years the country’s religious authorities in particular have been at the forefront of the effort to show Malaysia and Islam in the worst light imaginable. A few years ago Malaysia made the international headlines when members of the religious morality-police vice squad raided a nightclub in the capital, arresting and detaining all the young Malaysians there who happened to be Muslims, while allowing their non-Muslim friends and companions to party the night away. Those arrested later complained to the media that they were harassed and abused, locked in cages and humiliated by the morality police themselves. Then came a spate of other raids of peoples’ homes, including a rather embarrassing raid on the flat of an elderly American couple who were woken up in the middle of the night on the grounds that they were suspected of having Malaysian Muslims in their flat and presumably up to no good. The fact that the raid took place on the resort island of Langkawi further dampened Malaysia’s efforts to promote the country as a holiday paradise and second home for retiring couples from abroad... Over the past three years the country has witnessed angry public demonstrations by conservative Muslims over the issue of freedom of religion, sparked off by the case of Lina Joy, a Malay-Muslim who had converted to Christianity only to be told that her conversion would not be recognised unless she put herself through the religious court system first, thereby incriminating herself in the process. The latest case involves Massosai Revathi, a Malaysian citizen whose parents had converted to Islam but who was brought up by her Hindu grandmother and who had lived most of her life as a Hindu. Revathi is therefore one of the unfortunate cases of Malaysian citizens whose complex identity was bound to get her into trouble with the religious authorities in Malaysia, and it finally did. Following her marriage to her Hindu husband according to Hindu rites, they had a child who was also brought up a Hindu. Revathi was later called in by the religious authorities and told in no uncertain terms that she was legally a Muslim and had therefore committed a crime in the eyes of Islamic law and Muslim jurists: She was then sent to one of the country’s ‘Faith Rehabilitation Centres’ so that she could be ‘persuaded’ to return to Islam. The plight of Revathi and others like her has brought to the public’s attention the existence of the so-called ‘faith rehabilitation centres’ that were created as part of the Islamisation programme of Malaysia since the 1980s. Though little is known about these state-funded institutions and what happens in them, Revathi’s case has brought certain facts to light. According to her husband’s affidavit statement made to the court, his wife was kept in the rehab centre and lectured on Islam for weeks on end. As part of her re-indoctrination into Islam, she was made to eat beef — which as many people know, is not allowed for Hindus. Revathi was kept away from her husband and child for six months, until media pressure and constant lobbying by both Hindu and secular NGO groups led to her release this week. Upon her release Revathi has spoken of her ordeal to the Malaysian and international press, revealing the conditions of the camp and the fact that many who were there had chosen to escape. Furthermore she has been told that she cannot renounce Islam, despite the fact that she was brought up by her Hindu grandmother and had lived as a Hindu most of her life. This also puts into jeopardy her marriage to her Hindu husband and the custody of her child. Needless to say, none of this bodes well for Malaysia, Islam or the image of Muslims in the country. At a time when religious issues have become ultra-sensitive in Malaysia, cases such as Revathi’s points to the growing intransigence and belligerence of the country’s religious authorities, who increasingly behave like a law unto themselves. Furthermore one wonders how many more cases exist out there, of people like Revathi or Lina Joy who have been forced into a life of secrecy and hiding for fear of the wrath of the morality police and sharia enforcers. Of course, all of this is taking place against the backdrop of a Malaysia that is about to celebrate its 50th anniversary and which is currently celebrating ‘Visit Malaysia Year 2007’. Tourists who come to the country will undoubtedly be bedazzled by the pastiche of post-modern consumerism run amok in the capital, where shopping and capitalism seem to be the real credo of the land. The Malaysian government under Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi prides itself with the claim of being a moderate Muslim state where a ‘civilised Islam’ is being promoted under the vague banner of ‘Islam Hadari’. But where, pray tell, is the ‘civilised’ aspect of religious moral policing that locks people in cages, verbally abuses female Muslims accused of indecent dressing, breaks into the homes of citizens in the dead of night? Underneath the glitz and glamour of Malaysia’s polished façade, the unfettered religious bureaucracy of the country points to a growing tide of Malay-Muslim communitarianism that is increasingly intolerant and demanding a greater slice of public space. Some Malaysians living in multiracial neighbourhoods have even been told that they cannot keep dogs as pets, for fear of upsetting their Muslim neighbours. The victims of this politicised religious politics, like Revathi, are left to fend for themselves with only the help of the country’s small NGO community and the international media to highlight their cases. Yet the verdict is clear: After being detained for six months, Revathi confesses that she “hates Islam even more now”. Hardly surprising when one considers what she has been put through in the name of ‘saving her soul’. The question is, what is the current government of Malaysia going to do about the current state of affairs? Malaysia’s religious authorities have proven to be a menace to themselves, and some would argue the country as well. |

Friday September 14, 02:11 AM New Delhi: A letter threatening to assassinate Tamil Nadu Chief Minsiter M Karunanidhi has sent the state police panicking. The postcard received on Thursday evening by the City Police Commissioner reportedly carried the message that Karunanidhi will be “blown up using a human bomb" on September 15. News agency PTI reports that the card, written in Tamil by an outfit that calls itself Al-Umma-Madhani Iyakkam said that Karunanidhi had promised to relax the age ceiling for recruitment to the police forces from 24 to 29. However, it was relaxed only for SC/ST candidates, which was "totally condemnable". The letter demanded Karunanidhi officially declare the relaxation in age during the inauguration of Kalaignar TV station on September 15. Apart from this demand, the letter also sought reservation for Muslim candidates in the police department and reduction of required height from 168 cm to 163 cm. "If not, 'Kalaignar' (Karunanidhi) would be eliminated through human bomb," the card, bearing the seal of Peelamedu post office in the city, threatened. When contacted, Police Commissioner C K Gandhirajan said that investigations were on. |

Broken People
Reporter Ramita Navai and Producer Siobhan Sinnerton travel through India exposing the horrific plight of the country's 170 million Dalits; Literally meaning "the broken people" - and previously called "the untouchables", they are at the bottom of India's caste system and are some of the most oppressed people on Earth. The team begin their journey with Dalits who are manual scavengers - a polite term for those whose role in life is to clean latrines by hand. It's a practise which is officially illegal, but a million Dalits do it every day. The position of Dalits at the bottom of the caste ladder is deeply ingrained and those who step out of line are often ritually humiliated or punished with violence. The Indian Government introduced an atrocities against Dalits law to deal with caste crime 18 years ago, but its implementation has been abysmal with a conviction rate of just two per cent. http://www.channel4.com/news/articles/ontv/unreported_world/india+the+broken+people/830447 |

Rat Eaters
The politics of food in rural India. Despite the caste system being illegal in India, in many rural areas it is still rife. Stefan goes to India's most lawless state to meet the "rat eaters". I always think that programmes about extremes are momentarily titillating but ultimately disappointing. The one strange food that I went actively searching for was rat. The Dalits are the lowest rung of Hindu society. Although caste discrimination is now illegal in India, in reality it's rife outside the cities and blights the lives of countless millions of people. The Musahars catch rats from the rice fields and in return for eradicating the rodents, the landowners allow them to take the rats for eating We went to one of the poorest and most corrupt areas of India - Bihar - where the rural Dalits are locked in a system of poverty and disadvantage. We went to find one of the lowest sub-sections of the Dalits, the Musahars, roughly translated as "rat eaters". We visited a village called Paraiya, which was desperately poor. After 10 minutes of so, two tiny rats the size of mice were captured and their necks swiftly broken The Musahars catch rats from the rice fields and in return for eradicating the rodents, the landowners allow them to take the rats for eating. It's a gruesome perk but with little other protein available, the rats are a great treat. We'd been in Paraiya for about an hour, learning about the rice harvest, when someone ran over to tell us that a couple of rats had been spotted in the fields. We arrived just as two men had pinned the rats in their holes, and were beginning to dig them out. After 10 minutes of so, two tiny rats the size of mice were captured and their necks swiftly broken. Time to dine. Over a tiny fire of old rice stalks and twigs, they burned the fur off the rats, then tugged open their stomach cavities. After eviscerating them, the rats were roasted over the fire until they looked charred. I rolled the rat in my hand and bit into the leg. They offered the rat to me as an honoured guest. I pondered it for a moment - was this going to make me ill? Rats don't seem like the most hygienic animals but these little fellas had been carefully prepared and then thoroughly cooked over flames, so they should be OK. So I rolled the rat in my hand and bit into the leg. But roasted rat tastes very much like roasted chicken. I handed the rat back to my hosts and they demolished the rest of it. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programmes/cooking_in_the_danger_zone/6551389.stm |

Heart Disease among Indians is almost two to four times that of any ethnic community in the world. Consider these research finding: (Source: CADI Research Foundation)
The death rates from Coronary Artery Disease among overseas Asian Indians have been 50% to 300% higher than Americans, Europeans, Chinese, and Japanese, irrespective of gender, religion, or social class. By 2010, 60 per cent of the world’s cardiac patients will be Indian. Indians have Fatter Fat Indian Killer Belly is a strange and scary phenomenon. Asian Indians have a much higher incidence of diabetes and heart disease that other races even when other risk factors have been factored in. http://bodywords.wordpress.com/2007/09/07/indians-have-fatter-fat/ http://news.newamericamedia.org/news/view_article.html?article_id=0a8691f1162ef4792205ab10bef812e8 The South Asian countries of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Nepal account for about a quarter of the world's population and contribute the highest proportion of cardiovascular diseases compared with any other region globally. Deaths related to cardiovascular disease occur 5 to 10 years earlier in South Asian countries than in Western countries, according to background information in the article. The researchers found that the average age for first heart attack was lower in South Asian countries (53.0 years) than in other countries (58.8 years). The prevalence of protective risk factors (leisure time physical activity, regular alcohol intake, and daily intake of fruits and vegetables) were markedly lower in South Asian study participants compared with those from other countries. Some harmful factors were more common in native South Asians than in individuals from other countries: history of diabetes, current and former smoking, history of hypertension, psychosocial factors such as depression and stress at work or home, and elevated ApoB/ApoA-I ratio (a protein/lipid). When stratified by age, South Asians had more risk factors at ages younger than 60 years. http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2007/01/070116205535.htm NEW DELHI: South Asians have higher rates of heart attack at younger ages compared with people from other parts of the world, top cardiologists have found. In a study published in Wednesday’s edition of Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), a team of leading cardiologists from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, WHO, Hamilton and Ontario have found that the average age for first heart attack among South Asians is 53 against 58.8 years in rest of the world. http://www.dnaindia.com/report.asp?NewsID=1074900 |
