Melodies and fame through the melodies are greater than the national awards. That should have been the philosophy of MSV and singers of his golden days.

Sure for this senior maestro who has influenced all the MDs to be awarded with a national recognition very soon. He deserves it than any other MD. The longivity of his everlasting hits will stand proof.

MSV did all his songs with TMS and Suseela in late 60s. All were super hits no doubt and as usual there was a blind following by other Music directors, (-like what is happening today) to blame the market and used the same voices.

Many singers suffered lack of oppurtunities. Some singers like Loganathan, Sirkazhi and AM Raja were branded with different styles like Philosophical songs which came rarely.

Now the whole scene has changed, Thankless job has resulted MSV to listen his own songs commented as MGR song, TMS song etc.,in literally all TV interviews without bothering to mention his name and as usual the tfm field which ignores seniority does it to him as well.

One good thing with MSV is his everlasting melodies, of course, his rapport with the fans and masses, his appreciation to young music directors and singers and his being an embodiment of humility. He is being too good (eg. assists and plays harmonium for Ilarajas ?stage singing) to every body without differentiating.

This quality which is unique with senior musicians should not be taken as a testimony for all the cases, for he has praised unworthy people as well.

Poor old lion of film music.

He should try something in this new trend with voices AR Rahman, YSR - Screechy and squeeeky!

Why didnt he use Sirkali in 70s and 80s is questioned in a different forum. Does anybody have a genuine answer? Or is it because he had lesser number of films than IR who was doing more at that time. Is it true that after Annakili MSV called IR for assisting his music?

MSV is great..

Most postings talk about his famous duets. But MSV is a great orchestrator and composer.

Just listen to "Pattatthu Rani.." in Sivantha Mon..And "Yengay Nimmathi..." in Putiya Paravai..And "Mutthamo Mohamo.." in Parakkum Pavai.. These are far far ahead of time in TFM music those days. Sometime I think MSV exceeded even the best of IR we have seen. I mostly grew up in IR's period but when I listened to MSV's I get this impression.

MSV and Kannadasan, Oh what a combination. Ive seen MSV crying with tears whenever he talks about Kannadasan,. Whatever said and done those days, the titles with which they were called were 'natural' and not put on like present days thendrals, puyals and gnanis. Kaviyarasu meant Kannadasan, Mellisai Mannan for MSv, Nadigar thilagam Sivaji, Makkal thilagam MGR and so on.
Long live MSV the great maestro.

Well to me, MSV's & other musicians' music couldn't penetrate in me. Their music all seems to be juz song accompanyment. Nothing more.

I feel only gnani's music alone can do that. And he don even need lyrics to support. His music seems to be a class of its own...juz flows into ur blood...u noe wat i mean.

Only he seem to have done that and still doing that.

Ravi ksr - There is no doubt that MSV is a king of orchestration. He is the only music director to have dictated notes straight, with his harmonium and created a harmony with a hundred piece orchestra those days, extempore, with all the musicians around in the recording studio, doing a single time recording with the singers.

Not like the recent trends with seperate track recording punching system with which people give all craps.

Ambleen - I disagree to what you say. Your tastes are not eternal. Just try listening to such numbers which is soaked in your blood after six more months. You will know your status then. MSV tunes, be it 1960/70/80/90, you cannot end a day without listening to his compositions, especially with the combination of TMS,PS and Kannadasan. They have stood the test of time and are already in the circulation and nerves of millions and millions of tfm fans. This is no secret. Be practical and sensible.

MSVs service is phenomenal. Name anything in film music industry and he has it, a good sample for it.
Traditional literature - Vinayagar agaval in the film Namm Kuzhandaigal.
Navagraha Krithi - A song on Navagrahams in the film Ganga Gowri. All of the above sung by Seeyazhi Govindarajan in 70-80.

Bharathidasan songs - Thamizhukkum Amudhendru per, Sanhe Muzhangu, Pudhiyador Ulagam seivom.

Bharathiyar songs- Sindunadiyin misai nilavinile, Sinnanchiru kiliye(latest version in SAChandrasekars movie), Nallador veenai seidhe in Varumayin niram sivappu.
Hundreds and hundreds of kavidhais of-
Kannadasan, Pattukkotai, Vaali, and other lyricists, composed with melody and without disturbing the lyrical or voice beauty.

It is happy to see that there are people with good knowledge on MSV music, who, undoubtedly, is the biggest trend setter in TFM till date.

His versatality is unique. What a variety of tunes(even based on same ragam) for variety of situations (bhavam) sung by variety of singers!!!
He has handled with great ease all the systems of music ( Carnatic, Hindustani, Western , Pop, Folk etc.) with his own stamp. In a period of Jambawans in Hindi film world, his tunes stood very unique and different. Even, if we look at the style of his music in every decade from 50s to 80s (till when he was active), it is very much different for every decade. Most of all, his tunes were simply matchless and as a creative person, it is very difficult to imagine such flow of music. ( Someone has written about "Mangayaril Makarani". Can some one forget, "Yamuna Nadhi inge" (Gouravam), "Karpanaiyo Kai vandhado " (Malathi) and so on.......?

I had a pleasant opportunity to meet MSV at his residence for about 45 min after 8 PM 5 years back. I just went to meet him without any notice. I never expected, such a great person would entertain an ordinary person like me for 45 minutes and talking about music. If anyone can join me, we might have an intense session with MSV (purely on his music).

All certain done, I think he has not been given the due recognition he deserves. Only his time tested music provides the answer for this also.

It would be very nice, if we analyse his music in TFM (with our own limitations).

I was blessed to See all in one hall/one stage

& you will not believe, down the stage along with me were the others from film industry/Writers .
yes, Pughazendhi,Balakumaran, R.C.sakthi,Seerkzhi sivachidambaram,Bharadwaj,Deva,Muthulingam,Kamakotiyan,Poovilangu mohan,Nagesh,Rajesh were present..

The programme started off with a kid singing Kurai ondrum illai
Since naushad ali had to leave early he released the book & Veteran V.Dakshinamoorthy received the first copy.

Naushad praised MSV (in hindi translated by PBS)

then Naushad Left .. till that time MSV was standing.. He sat only after Naushad Left.

AVM Saravanan started off the Programme with his speech.Sivakumar followed. He cited many songs in many Category and mentioned TMS,Seerkazhi,PS,PBS & VJ.He also cited some of the pages from the book.
All others speech were short & sweet..

KB's speech was filled with emotions..
Illayaraja -- Sang the Malai pozhudin & said PS's Singing & MSV-TKR's tune brought me life..

listen to songs of Avanthaan Manithan, Anbe Vaa, Ulagam Suttrum Valibhan, Ninaithaaley Innikkum, Aayirathil Oruvan,Thangapathakka, Gauravam - with songs super hits, and how? see the majesty of the compositions. Royal Tunes, royal passages, cannot find a flaw in those tunes and so suited for the personalities of Sivaji and MGR. IR saying that is nothing surprising, because IR had to find another way to define musical personality as the best one came from MSV!

BUT, THE BEST NEWS IS THE BIOGRAPHY AND HOPEFULLY MORE SUCH BIOGRAPHIES OF OTHER COMPOSERS ALSO COME OUT.

i missed this one. I didn't know that VDak was still alvie. V Dak was the closest to MSV is the traditional sounds and MSV style tunes, flawless and in a ways dark type feel in the tunes - comprising, sentimentality, nature evocativeness, classical, temple sounds, heart breaking - good example - Valayku Vankiya Veena late 60s Malyalam. (don't forget Nanda En Nila by SPB in a Tamil film)

In the days when I used to travel often to Bangalore I would take the auto from Adyar via FS Estate to Central and there at 9.15 pm on a Sunday evening you would find MSV walking around talking to the common folk and high and mighty alike. His daughter has told me that one time MSV would walk out for a coffee around the corner and wouldn't get back home until evening tiffin having eaten at everyone's place here and there. The man's warmth is boundless and his effortlessness and natural gift for music is a treaure forever. Yet with all that it is difficult to get him to talk about himself. And MSV the singer? That's another chapter/book by itself. When will we get to hear IR and MSV sing together with just a harmonium and guitar between themselves? Do we have to wait for deivasankalpam? And IR as usual had to at a function felicitating MSV come there as a student. While one can write volumes about this gnani's music, the book about his character hasn't been written yet. It awaits the work of a scholar - one who is yet to be born. IR's greetings to MSV reminds me of Mammootty's tribute to Sivaji where he said that at the moment of the thespian's death he stood just as another one of his millions of grieving fans. I have been listening to Rafi everyday for the last one week to and from work - it starts with Chaudvin ka Chand and goes on thru "Man tadpat hari sharshan ko aaj" (Baiju Bawra) and yesterday I heard Ulagam Sutrum... I don't know where Naushad ends and MSV begins. Who do I thank? Kurai ondrum illlai

Andd now comes the news of MSV receiving the ISai Peraignar award from Tamizh Isai Sangam. How apt.

The award had to wait so long for itself to get honoured.

The mere attendence of stalwarts like Naushaad, V.Dakshnamoorthy, IR etc shows two things:

1) The musical genius of MSV
2) THE PERSON MSV

I bought this book yesterday. Specific mention from IR and you shoud read it to experience the emotion. Last line from IR "I am surrendering all my fame&recognition (if at all I earned all these years) to MSV feet. Rare gesture from IR to genius.

As for "Kurai ondrum illai" I remember MSV mouthing a few bad words about cinema ulagam being a world with no gratitude. This was, I believe, during SPB's 30th-anniversary-in-cinema function.

Gangai Amaran was the chief presenter and he had excellent words of praise for MSV and said everybody, including IR, learnt a lot from MSV.

TKR's statement is a little intriguing, though.

I long back told about this humbleness of IR in one of the threads. I don't know whether you remember it or not.

MSV is gem and down to earth person whom everybody will love. From what I understand about IR from some of the inputs about IR is
1) He speaks his mind.
2) When somebody rubs him even slightly on wrong side, because of high self respect, he denies to work with them any further.
3) There was even a say earlier that he ill treated MSV!! This incident clearly proves it wrong.
4) Also IR is really loyal to people who are loyal to him.
5) He has a good integrity.
6) He don't like talking to journalists much.

While you see apparent humbleness in ARR and MSV, IR had that trait hidden. This is my opinion.
