It was raining very heavily on that day. Usually sonpura was very crowded, but on that day no one had come out even to purchase vegetables in the mandi.
Sukhiya knew that there was something wrong, something bad that had happened in the village in the past two years. All the villagers were so friendly that the whole village was a family. Everyone new that he was coming to the village after 2years from the military, after serving his nation.
At least the village surpanch would have definitely shown up..

Thinking about this Sukhiya slowly walked towards his house, which was near the great well of the village. As he walked, lost memories of his village days came to his mind. After going to the city, now he was aware that the people in his village were the most innocent, friendly & hardworking people. He had always loved his village & the villagers. His house used to be always crowded with women folks who would sit & chat with his old mother for hours after fetching water from the well. His sister Reshmi was still studying & somehow he wanted her to study more than him. His aim was to make Reshmi a doctor & build a hospital in his village for his people.

As he was walking, he neared the sarpanch’s house, which was about 2mins away from his house. He just leapt his head across to see if the sarpanch was sitting in the veranda sipping his tea. But the door was closed. Sukhiya was surprised, and the more worried. In all his days of 22years in his village he had never felt his village so very quite & deserted.
As these thoughts came to his mind, his feet hurried faster towards his house. The rain was getting worse &the wind had also started to blow.
Finally he reached his house. He saw that there was no one around the well & none of his mother’s friends were at home in the veranda also.
He slowly went inside. His face lit up with smiles when he saw his sister Reshmi, he hugged her & his mother came running as her eyes where longing to see her son since a long long time. For a while Sukhiya was happy & he was talking to his mother & sister about himself & asking them about them.

The house looked just the same. Reshmi looked much older & matured now. He was very happy that she had topped the class this year. His mother looked old & tired. He was so happy to be with his family in his village. Then slowly he asked his mother about the village & the villagers.
His mother tried to change the topic, but Sukhiya knew that there was something wrong. He wanted to know everything. When he forced his mother to tell, she started crying. Tears went rolling down her cheeks, her throat was filled with emotions & she couldn’t speak.
