POEMS FOR STARK REALITY
CHILD LABOR
Those thousand children
In the darkness of the day
Keeping their childhood at bay
Donning the earning role
And filling phosphorus
In to tubes of paper!
In these tender years
They know the price of rice
The volume of oil consumed
To light up home
Till the sun is in the sky!
Their rationed food
Their curtailed dreams
Their broken huts
Their unbroken faith!
Their innocent addition
Of overtime to addiction
Of few perks at times.
For this single day
For you to be gay
Several months
Have they churned and churned
All their might
All their time
All for those crackers!
To those media gods
Who preach theory
Saying no to child labor
Is a front page story
Read the story
Yet feel the truth
Its not out of passion
But because of no option
These siblings have
Taken to work
Abstain from all theories
Move away from ideality
It’s a ball of earth
With insensitive imbalance
Make it a day to prove a point
Light up the darkness
Burst out those crackers
Burn some of your money
Which never reaches charity
It’s an indirect blessing
To those countless fingers
Which were wrapping dreams
For you to ignite!
Banish theories
Burst realities
Light up the world
To make someone happy
Wish you all
a happy diwali !!
As usual baski

Thank you Bhaskaran for reminding us to examine our conscience. The lines
"And filling phosphorus
In to tubes of paper!
In these tender years
They know the price of rice
The volume of oil consumed"...
really wrenches the heart. In some way or the other I suppose we are all responsible.

Bhaskaran,
That was a lovely poem...I was emotionally touched...but at the end leaves me with a feeling that all of us are so very self-centered that we care but very little for the deprived.

A good poem, Mr. Bhaskar. In a similar forum (Uyirezuththu of yahoogroups), there was a very beautiful poem by NAMBI on the same topic:

It portrays a pathetic scene. It's a Diwali day. Crackers burst and burn. There lies a cracker, fizzled out. When someone takes it and peels it off, in the bits of those papers is a news on an accident at Sivakasi Fireworks factory where a young boy had died.
So, let me ask you a question: Will u not buy crackers next year thinking about this boy or will u buy the crackers 'coz it helps many in their livelihood?
This apart, we appreciate your thoughts and the poem.
