From the ancient Tamil treatise tholkAppiyam :
nURpA 1197:
nahaiyE, azuhai, iLivaral, marutkai,
accam, perumidham, vehuL, uvahai enRu
appAl ettE meyppAdu enba.
¿¨¸§Â «Ø¨¸ Ç¢ÅÃø ÁÕð¨¸
«îºõ ¦ÀÕÁ¢¾õ ¦ÅÌÇ¢ ¯Å¨¸¦ÂýÚ
«ôÀ¡ø ±ð§¼ ¦ÁöôÀ¡Î ±ýÀ.
The eight are:
laughter
crying
disgust
wonder
fear
pride/arrogance
anger
happiness
Actually these are not really feelings per se. These are technically speaking "meyp pAdu" where mey = body; pAdu = expression.
i.e. manifest physical expression of the emotions.
This classification is more suitable for dramaturgy.
For the inherent emotions, we need to look at the classifications by tholkAppiyam canonically expressed through the five main love situations:
patient waiting for the lover
union
separation/elopement
infidelity
disappointment/pathos
These were mapped one to one to paNs (pAlais or, in present day terms, mELakarthas), terrain, season, time of day etc.
so as to match the mood.
The beauty is that the pAlais captured the quintessential emotions of the appropritae theme.
The present day Sanskrit names are given in parens.
patient waiting = mullai (= harikAmbOdhi)
union = kuRinjci (= natabhairavai)
separation/elopement = pAlai (=sankarAbharaNam)
infidelity = marudham (=karaharapriya)
disappointmnet/pathos = neydhal (=thOdi)
These are related by paNNup peyarththal (or grahabedha)! Actually there are seven the two that were left out are for unmatched love.

I am not surprised by this reaction.! :-))
I was doing for the first time and expected somebodyy like you or balaji to say so!
Dr.Na.Ganesan from your town, Houston, says the intervocalic (in between two vowels or vowelized consonants)
"ka" is not exactly "ga" but more like "ha" or between "ga" and "ha" (which is well known) but his point is that we must represent it correctly in English transliteration. Northern Tamilnadu people tend to pronounce it closer to "ga"; but of course they are also other ones who tend to soften the wird initial "ka" to "ga" (kudhirai -> gudhirai), "pa" to "ba" (palli->balli), "cha" to "ja" (chUdu ->jUdu) etc!
We have always had the "h" sound as in Aydham.
We should continue this important discussion in the tlit or some such forum.
[I was for a while using the OTL-like convention with "ka" everywhere. But it was not prefered by many folks and it was understandable since it was too far removed from actual pronuncitaion. Actually it would end up affecting the pronunciataion in the long term!]
Thanks for noticing it!

Friends,
Does any one know any site where I could find Aaroganam and Avaroganams of ragas. If so, could you please email me!
Thanks,
Saravanan.
