Narayana Gowla is a janyam of mela 28 (Harikedhara Gowlai) but seems to have most of the Raga Lakshana of it's parent Raga. Could anybody explain in detail the differences between KG and NG.
Thanks

The parent or mela raaga is HariKedaragaula (HKG = m28). NarayanaGaula(NG) does not take the gandharam on ascent and dhaivatam on descent. KedaraGaula ( your KG ) (janya ) is pentatonic on ascent while full on descent. These differences are substantial.
It is not clear ( to me ) whether Hari-kedaragaula is simply the asampurna mela name for the sampurna mela HariKamboji. And whether Hari-Kedaragaula is no different from Kedaragaula. ( Ha-ri being added for the Katapayadi bean-counters )
The vakra m g r g s in NG is unique to it.

in NG, the madhyamam is a nyaasa swara - which IMHO is not the case with KG.
the suddha ma is also the jeeva swaram of NG - the thyagaraja masterpiece kadalevaadu starts off at the ma. (ma ma ma = ka da le).
incidentally, at a lecdem held in chennai in november 1999, sanjay subramaniam opined that there are no new compositions in NG. chitraveena ravi kiran who was a part of the panel also agreed.
the next day, the chitraveena genius actually composed a piece in NG and presented to sanjay subramaniam as a gift.(the presentation happened during the vote of thanks of a concert of sanjay in raga sudha hall, mylapore)
it was a really amazing display of ravi kiran's musical genius!!

It appears this raaga (NG) has been examined by Tyagaraja in at least three different taalas. And KedaraGaulas of Tyg. use up about 4 different taalas. Incidentally Parasakti in Saveri of Tyg. seems to have a Syamasastri influence or vice-versa on comparing to ParaakelaNannu in KG of SS.

From shrikaanth
nadopasaka mentioned that Narayana gola does not have gandhara in ascent and dhaivata in descent. The second half is factually incorrect. KG the scale is S R M P N S| S N D P M G R S
whereas for NG the scale is S R M P N D N S | S
S N D P M G R G R S. It is definitely true that madhyama is more prominent in NG than in KG.But evn the other swaras differ in their gamakas. Jaaru gamaka is very important in kG not so in NG unless one wants to leave listeners in doubt. The R and Ni are plainer in NG. R and N are always rendered with kampana in KG. Note that although PNDNS is very characteristic of NG as in GRGRS PNS is definitely allowed. with N rendered plain also S n d p S is a goodphrase in NG definitely not S ndp R as that will be Dvijavanti . MD kritis 2Shri rAmam ravikulAbdhi sOmam 2 is an encyclopaedia of this raga and a masterpiece[not surprising being an MD kriti] there is also a kriti of Mysore sadashiva tayaru starting on madhyama2shrI ramana vijita madana dEva vara sAketAdhipa2 on Rama. a very good one.NGis a ghana raga while KG is a rakti raga
