The originator of this thread employs the phrase "tamil music" to mean "tamil lyrics rendered in any music". It is incorrect. That phrase denotes what is called carnatic music today and has nothing to do with Tamil language. So the thiruvarUr trinity are Tamil scholars, albeit of the musical variety.
[In this context we must note also that there is no such thing as classical Tamil music and, an oxymoronic, "non-classical Tamil music". What we are pained with in movies is mostly western pop music on which Tamil lyrics ride.]
It is an indicator of the levels to which Tamils at large have lost their sense of music. They cannot separate music from language/lyrics. We do see that Tamils have pretty much stopped listening to instrumental music such as the traditional Veena, Nayanam etc.
