Popular with whom? Indians or the rest of the world? Sanskrit is hardly popular with the rest of the world, outside of academic circles.
The refugee Sri Lankan population has probably brought the existence of Tamil to the notice of many who would have never heard of it before and has certainly ensured that it is spoken in very many countries.
I wonder if any Non-Indian (other than those who have the gift of learning languages like some people make tea;) has ever found it easy to pick up. I suspect not many have!

"Why is not a popular language?"
It is used by a popular number of 609 Million people, now how much more popular do yu want it to be ?
How popular is Akkadian and Coptic ?
They are dead but Tamil inspite of its "old" age still survives as a popular language althouge sections of erswhile Tamilspaekers have picked up other langauges like Malayalam and Sinhalese.
But a core population still speaketh.

Sir,
i think that the tamil language is one of the most ancient and respected languages in the
universe. it is no doubt also a most popular
language. i think that the constitution of india must also include tamil language as official language of india, and i think all self respecting
tamil persons should jointly file a PIL in the Supreme Court in this regard.
Sincerely yours
S. Malini Iyengar

Hi Malini
I agree with you as far as the first line of your posting is concerned. But in India there are many other languages more popular than Tamil. How can Tamil be made an official language with out considering them?

Dear Ms. Malini,
Tamil is a great language. I think that Tamil is already included in the 8th(?) Schedule of the Constitution of India. So no need for filing a PIL. BTW I visited your legal website, how are you associated with this website. I am an advocate based in Chennai, and practice in Madras High Court and also in Supreme Court.

Tamil has a great past and a wonderful culture associated with it, which is dwindling because of "Hindi" being the national language. Tamil is the national language of Malaysia and 2nd language of Singapore. 10% of the population in South Africa being Indians predominantly formed by tamilians and a sect of Srilanka speaks Tamil. Telugu, Kanada and Malayalam actually descended from Tamil. It is a shame to make tamil as only a regional language given its sweetness, past and glory. Although, it is very controversial, I would advice for a seperate country status for Tamil Nadu to maintain the glory of Tamil and prove it to the World. It can be argued that each state will then ask for a seperate country status ... But then it is only south India which is being rain shadowed by Hindi dominance... North India can still remain as a seperate country.
