A double-CD album titled
"thirukkuRaL isai malar - kAmaththuppAl"
released by the International Tamil Language Foundation headed by
Alagappan Rammohan based in Woodridge, Illinois (Chicago?).
It has 25 songs representing the 25 adhikArams of the 3rd pAl of kuRaL.
The singers are: S.P. Balasubramaniam and Chitra.
price: $25 (non-profit: I had
to issue check to the *foundation* and not to the vendor). It is really nice.
Somehow there is an air of familiarity about the album, may be due to SPB and Chitra.
Each song begins with the first kuraL of the adhikAram sung verbatim and is continued using parts of others kuraLs from the
rest of the adhikAram.
Another interesting thing:
it has a booklet by Vi.Pa.Ka. Sundaram who has done a monumental
work on finally unravelling the exact mappping of names and structure of present day Tamil Music
("Carnatic music ") to the sangam era Tamil music. it ties together
agam thinAi and carnatic music. It describes in a very inspiring and startling fashion how using ancient Tamil books such as TolkAppiam, Silambu,
Panchamarabu, thevAram and such, the mystery has been unravelled.
Please go ahead, get this album and contribute to
the growth of such efforts. $25 is nothing
compared to all the money spent on more mundane
things.

Can anyone recommend any CDs of Thavil w/Nagashvaram? I was is Chidambaram in 92 and heard a great band called the Kappur Brothers and later heard a lot of similar music at a festival. I'm pretty ignorant about Carnatic/Tamil music. Any recommendations and/or where to look would be appreciated. Thanks!
