At the outset, let me congratulate TVS on his well deserved Noble-Prize Equivalent!
I wonder how Music Academy goes about nominating artists for this prestigious award... Does anyone know the in and outs of this selection process ?
I had always felt that AKC was one deserving candidate - wonder how long he may have to wait before this honor is betowed on him. IMO, the academy will be honoring itself by inducting the Clarinet Everest to his Sangeetha Kalanidhi roll call. Any comments ?

One of the qualifications is that the candidate be not LALGUDI JAYARAMAN !!!!!!!!!!!!
SHAME on the music academy for not conferring the title on the great Lalgdi Jayaraman, because of some nasty politics on the part of some elderly foxes !!!! Really, shame on them for bypassing him and giving the award to some much lesser individuals !!!!

pokkiri,
Lalgudi has refused the award long back (in 1970s) when it was offered to him. Why should the Academy embarass itself by offering it again to him just if he is going to refuse it again? Why he refused it at that time.....go and ask him...only he knows the reason.

Excuse me, Mr Iyer, why would anyone refuse the award ? Are you sure that is the case ??? I heard that he was blacklisted because of some personal rift with some influential senior musicians who wielded a lot of cloud im Music Academy circles

May be, Lalgudi expected the honor ealier than it was offered to him. Iyer, do you know which year Music Academy (allegedly) offered Lalgudi the title ? [ As a reference, TNK was conferred the honor in 1980; Balamuralikrishna was honored in 1978; Pattammal in 1970 ]
BTW, talking of Lalgudi, Does he have any violin disciples outside of his extended blood relations ?? Just curious....

That Lalgudi refused it when it was offered to him in the early 1980s is well documented. He rejected it because the Academy was not giving violin solos a slot during their annual festival.

O S T has learnt violin from Lalgudi. This piece of information is from the introductory speech on a live c d released by the U S based fine arts organisation few years ago. [ one should thank OST for according permission for live recording of his concert unlike sudha and krishna] Why he is not playing violin ask either OST or his guru. Now that the Academy is encouraging solo violin concerts Lalgudi can accept the honour if it is offered now.

Why only lalgudi even the legendary singer MD Ramanathan was not awarded the sangeetha Kalanidhi when he was alive !! Just imagine BalaMurali Krishna was awarded that at a very young age ! ( I dont have anything against that but to not award MDR is a great shame )All this leads me to belive that Sangeetha Kalanidhi award is a political one and not always related to artistic skills..

shri Krish Ramachandaran,
You have forgotten the stalwarts like T R Mali, TNR, TK Rengachari etc. All dirty politics. The academy is stinking now.

Academy's Sangeetha Kalanidhi Award has been always like Oscar Awards.. A lot of lobbying and sometimes, by coincidence meritorious persons also get awarded out of turn or much later than the award is due to them. Anywhich ever way you look at it.. there is no science to this business of giving awards.. who knows who is what determines!
If they set standards such as the person should have pubished works, a performing track record, be selected by a voting process of musicians based on a voting process or interview which is open to knowledgeable public and senior musicians, then there is some sense to all these things. Mr. Vasu who is the president has no regard for anything.. I have seen him smoking in the premise a few times and nobody has any gall to hold him by collar and admonish him or question him. When he runs the show what do you expect..?

I have seen only strongly opinionated people dominating these institutions bringing their personal likes and dislikes into these awards without any kind of true analysis or reasons. Has anybody questioned the parameters and criteria that determines these awards and how each musician that was awarded scored under the process..? I bet NOT..!
Have you guys been to their Sadas.? It is nothing but a joke. Some old musicians solely basing on their school of music or paadaantharams will be advocating on phrase usages of some raagam all the time.. I don't who does the documentation or where goes the documented proceedings.

Over the years we have all been conditioned and used to accepting this thamaashaa year after year and consider as if performing in the Academy is the ultimate goal of every musician and getting the coveted Sangeetha Kalanidhi is the highest recognition..
As far as Lalgudi issue is concerned, rumor has it that he refused it because he was accorded the award after they offered to T.N.Krishnan. I am not personally aware of that..

Rightly said. Till Dr. Raghvan's tenure the story was different. God save Academy.

Bombay Jayashree is also a 'shishya' of Lalgudi. Just because OST and Jayashree are his disciples, it doesn't follow that they were trained in playing the violin. At that level, I am sure that they can sing what he plays on the violin.

We are not going to enjoy any thamaashaa this year in the academy as it is heading towards a total closure.

Yes. Thamaashaa again. Vellore Ramabadran is a very good selection for Sangeetha kalanidhi. HIs concert tour along with Veena Balachandar some 45
years ago is memorable. Let us congratulate Vellore.
