An enormous loss for Carnatic Music

The deaths of khanjira vidwans G. Harishankar and V. Nagarajan robbed carnatic music of not only two of its most gifted artists but of the khanjira art itself. These two stalwarts were the two emperors in the field for the past 40 years.
One can't stop wondering: what will happen to the art of khanjira play?

Very sad indeed. I beleive the only way to revive it is to introduce it into more concerts. To preserve an art, main musicians will have to pay a price (i.e. splitting the concert money). Yet, this price is nothing compare to the legacy the khanjira has left in carnatic music.

Hi Rohan, the art is usually greater than its practitioners and lives on. This is also why guru-shishya parampara is basis of CM. Is it possible for you to easily add this skill to your portfolio ?.

The art of khanjira is does not vary much from mridangam. Hence it is possible for me to learn the art.
Time is the only constraint.

Perhaps the art of Kanjira is still safe in the hands of Selva Ganesh. There are other great players that I have seen too, though their names do not spring to mind.
But this in no way lessens my great sadness, especially that Harishankar died so young (six years younger than my age). With his great modesty he would probably be amazed that he is being mourned all over the world but is true that he is. Even here in this forum we are speaking from US and UK.

B.S.Purushotanam is the top most khanjira player at the moment, and for good reason. He is a very talented artist with enormous grasping power.
Papanasam Sethuraman is also relatively popular and is also a good khanjira artist.
Moreover, Abhishek Raghuram (grandson of Palghat Raghu who is also a vocalist) plays the khanjira. He is an excellent player and has perfromed with a few musicians.

Yes, I also saw this article. Ravikiran has had many such experiences with these musicians and is a perfect person to relate them with others.

The artist you are referring to is probably khanjira maestro H.P.Ramachar (son of khanjira meastro H.P.Puttachar). Ramachar was a highly regarded khanjira artist and made a well respected name for himself. I have not heard him though.
Amongst the younger generation, we have top khanjira artists like B. Purushotaman and Papasansam Sethuraman. Abhishek Raghuram is also giving khanjira concerts along with vocal ones.

it's sad but true. and the least we could do is to encourage the younger generation to learn
such wonderful instruments and not condemmn it.
it maybe hard for them 2 get the flow of it at first but if u incorporate/fuse it together with different genres of music it might create a spark to it.

A lot of Khanjira perfromers play during the concert at Sri Venugopala Swamy Temple in Bangalore during the time of GokulAsthami.
