We all have heard some songs from all the singers. But some songs/ragas are associated with some as their specialities. For eg, "nagumomu" by TNS and kadhri goplanath, "rakshamaam sharanaagatham" by KJY, "shree ranga pura vihaara" by MSS etc...It may be suggestible to compare the different rendtions of the great artists and analyze. some aspects could be kalpana swaras, bhava prayogam etc...

I am sure most of us agree that Balamurali's rendition of many krithis are different from that of the "popular"trends. This is mostly good or even better than that in the case of Thyagaraja krithis since he emphasizes bhava and meaning of the krithis with proper pronunciation. Exactly opposite is his rendition of most Purandaradasar krithis, they are rendered at such a slow pace it makes it unbearable. Examples are that of Yadava nee baaro which he sings so slowly in Bahudaari, Krishna Ena baarade in Kedaram, Anugalavu in Aboghi etc. Unbelievably bad.
His dikshitar krithis are bearable. I love his renditions of Akshaya linga vibho and Anandamruthakarshini. Please post ur opinions. Thanks for starting this thread MS.

However some of BMK's purandara dAsa kritis are
quite good and catchy ! For eg . kELanO hari
tALanO (kalyani), I pariya sobagu (hamsAnandi) nA ninna dhyAnadoLiralu (kAnada) etc.
There is one dEvaranAma "simharUpanAdE" which
he sings in kambodhi. Incidentally he has composed
a kriti in the same mattu, "simha roopa dEva.
A good one IMO.

Your observation about BMK on thyaagyaa's kritihis is definitely right. He gives a different dimension to the pancharathna krithis. The two versions of pancha rathna krithis I like very much are :
(1) Santhaanam with chorus
(2) BMK
I like (1) just for the harmony of it though Santhaanam's pronunciation errors are aptly highlighted by BMK in his rendition :-)Obviously BMK is good in telugu.
When it comes to the feel he(BMK) gives to "kanakana ruchira", I have no words to describe. His delivery is something inimitable and very difficult to follow.
Though evey song of TNS is a gem, to me, two stand absolutely great. (1) nagumomu - I think it runs for 45 mins ? (2) marugelara - a song in which he cpativates the audience with a bhaavam that is inexpressible in words.

I am still yet to listen to anyone sing "Ksheera Sagara Sayana" as beautifully and soulfully as BMK.....

one more special aspect i could find in BMK is, his imagination in using the lyrics itself as swaras. For example, in manasuloni(hindolam), he uses Sa dha in all
combinations. And in mokshamu(charamathi) when he sings Saptha swaramulai, he sings Sa Ri Ga Ma Pa dha ni also. That is very nice. In addition to all these
technical aspects of music, bhavam is very important. The composers are all great saints and they didn't sing these just as a hobby or this is not their profession to
make money. They became one with GOD and composed all these, so if singers try to bring out that emotion it will be more tocuing and that happiness is all
above music.Music is only the media to reach that state of ecstasy. But unfortunately these days most of them stop their journey by just singing swaras and not
enjoying the bhava. But Nithyashri's tamil songs are exceptional. Her way of singing emphasizes on bhavam and pronunciations are perfect.

during nov/ dec 2002 in chennai fm broadcast one of the early mrg concerts was of BMK in which the masterpiece of shyama shastrigal in sankarabharanam was with one extra line added to it if i am correct. anybody had such experience in the past. absolutely there is no dispute on his excellent rendition.

I have so little technical understanding, but I love BMK because it seems to me that he brings out the beauty in what he sings
