Yeah.
But I would add a nuance to that.
I think to some extent traditional Gujarati, Marathi, Oriya names are also getting abandoned in favor of 'neutral' names.
Rahul --> Rajiv-->Indira --> Jawaharlal --> Motilal
Ratan Tata --> Jehangir Ratanji Dadaboy --> Jamshedji Tata
Akash-->Mukesh-->Dhirajlal-->Hirachand Ambani

This week's Vikadan features the "pEyOn pakkam' the 'famous' blogger. pEyOn has written a piece, which mimics the archaic style of "thamizh writing"(actually heavily sanskritised, communalised form), which used to be followed by Magazines like Vikadan, Kalki et al prior to and upto 1950s.
KV, you have to use the words according to the context.
காட்டாக (அதாவது எடுத்துக்காட்டாக): முக்கிய விஷயம் = முதன்மைச் செய்தி / சிறப்புப் பொருள் / இன்றியமையாத் தகவல் / தலையாய கருத்து என்று பல பொருள் தருவதாக இருக்கலாம்.
Subject- matter -

He's done this a few times in his early posts in his blog. I am glad he is reaching a wider audience now.
suyathampattam based digression, even though Payon is a hard act to follow.

A couple of yrs back equa posted a critical review of the film nAdOdigaL mentioning it insulted the audience's intelligence, particular's Sasikumar's sermons. He quoted Jayaram's line to Goundamani in periya idaththu mAppiLLai:
Plum complained he didn't understand the quote so I posted two 'Tamil' explanations:Quote:

Lemme quote my original post again: "indha vishayathula (idhukku thamizh soll enna?) naan tharkkuri."
indha edaththula, considering the colloquial template, 'porul' seri varum'nu sollreengla?
Looks like people have run out of words to talk about! :)
vaarthai comes from Sanskrit 'vArttA' (standard transliteration) or vaarththaa in common use. When some words are borrowed by Tamil the last syllable is shortened and 'ai' is added. sabhaa--> sabhai, gangaa -> gangai ,...,taarakaa -> taarakai, etc. Not sure why? vArttA means 'news', 'word', 'reply' etc depending on the context. We use vaarthai for 'sol' or word. in 'pEchchu vaarthai', vaarthai probably stands for reply. In Telugu it becomes vaarthalu meaning news.
It appears as though none of the younger generation participants had Sanskrit in school! :)
( I waited this long to make sure I did not preempt anyone. After all, this thread is for youngsters! )
Have fun! :)
In some cases, two languages may not have the exact same equivalent word and the meaning is realized with more than one word.
Take this case for e.g., 'vishaya gnAnam' - the most common English usage for vishayam in this context is not just matter but "subject matter" :-)
(SME is a very common term nowadays, "subject matter experttu")
Taking that route, I would say the Thamizh equivalent for vishayam is "பொருள் சார் / பொருள் சார்ந்த", though it doesn't sound colloquial at once.
"எனக்கு இந்தப் பொருள் சார்ந்த அறிவு குறைவுங்க" will be my recommended use. Though it may sound odd initially, over a period of time (like jillA to mAvattam), it will become "natural" :-)
Then over a period of time, "சார்ந்த" will be dropped in day-to-day speech.
And people will simply say "எனக்கு இந்தப்பொருளில் அறிவில்லை / நான் இந்தப்பொருளில் தற்குறி", and it won't feel odd :-)
idhaip patri enakku edhuvum theriyaadhu
idhaip patri enakku therindhadhu miga kuraivu
idhaip poruthavarai naan tharkkuri
idhaip patriya arivu enakku kuraivu
The trouble is when people who did not learn Tamil well try to tanslate English or other languages into Tamil it tends to be a literal translation. You see uncommon and archaic words! :)

P_R,

varukiRAn & varukinRAn are two variances to give color to the language :-)
Took my 19 yr old for a check-up yesterday and the doctor happened to be a Thamizhar :-)
He wanted to talk in Thamizh (seeing my name) and asked my son "are you a bilingual" :lol2:
We all immediately switched to Thamizh and it was nice :-) I explained him how we speak only Thamizh at home and he said it's the same at his home too.
Looks like a good number of ThamizharkaL living outside TN, may be even a majority of them, WANT to speak in Thamizh...
One example of how me and my 19 year old speak in "Thamizh" : (actual conversation, while driving this morning)
Him: ஆமா! ஆக்சுவலா மூணு பாட்டரி யும் ஒரு பாட்டரி கிரிப்பும் கொடுக்கப்போறேன்!
Me: ஒரு பாட்டரி தானே ஒரிஜினல்? மத்த ரெண்டும் வேற கம்பெனியோடது தான?
Him: ஆமாமா, அமேசான்'ல ஆர்டர் பண்ணி வாங்கினது...
I got reminded of this thread at that moment and manasukkuLLa did a
How much mix we use in our day-to-day conversations :-)
app, most of what you gave are words which we did not have Tamil equivalents for and had put in an effort to create an popularize.
The problem is more acute. Words which existed in Tamil are being replaced. An example which i like to give (and may have given already in the Hub) is something like this. And this is very recent.
A cooking show some 15-20 yrs back would have been:
ஒரு வாணலியில ஒரு தேக்கரண்டி நெய் விட்டுக்குங்க. கொஞ்சம் சூடானதும், அதுல முந்திரிப்பருப்பு போட்டு, அடுப்பை சின்னதாக்கி ஒரு ரெண்டு நிமிஷம் வதக்குங்க. பொன்நிறமா வந்ததும் அடுப்பை அணைச்சிறுங்க.
Now:
:rotfl:
BTW, what is Camera in Tamil ?? These are just English words with no Tamil interpretation, so I think it is OK use these English words as they are, but what really annoys me is the fact people use English words for items which already have Tamil names.
Here in UK, our people say "Rice" instead of "Soru", "fish" instead of "Meen". NijamavE mudiyalla, :sigh2:
I am really sorry to this, but amongst the thousands of Tamilians I have met, Tamilians from TN are the worst, when it comes to speaking pure Tamil.
You might be looked at differently at first if you are using thamizh words in place of commonly used English words. I always greet all my Thamizh friends with 'வணக்கம்' and also say 'நன்றி' instead of "Thanks". At first everyone felt a little uncomfortable with my usage of these words. But now everyone in our circle uses வணக்கம் and நன்றி among ourselves and they have become day to day words even with their family members. The new people coming from TN usually think that we are making fun of them, during our first 2 or 3 meetings before they also get used to these words.
