Karthi's new film titled Saguni
Three days back we had broke the news that Karthi is signing his next film with debutant director Shankar Dayal.
Today it is officially announced that the film is being titled Saguni.
Earlier, Karthi in an interview to a newspaper said: "Shankar's story was very impressive. My characterisation will also be quiet neat. It will be a satire on society and the script has several interesting elements to make it entertaining."
The story, screenplay, dialogue and direction of Saguni are by Shankar Dayal. GV Prakash will be the music director and the movie will have cinematography by PG Muthiah, art by Rajeevan and editing by Antony. The heroine and rest of the cast will be finalised soon.
Saguni is being made under the banner Team Warrior Pictures and the shooting will start this month.

In Saguni, Karthi’s next project, he will appear in an all new get-up, sources say. The role in Saguni requires Karthi to sport a very different look and when debut director Shankar Dayal requested him to consider a new look, the star immediately agreed.
Sources in Kollywood say that the director and actor are working on a new look and have a couple of get-ups in mind but have not finalized on anything. It is said that Karthi is keen on making a mark among the movie buffs and will come out with a look that would please all.

Hint on Saguni story : Karthi who's a normal guy working in a company suddenly enters in to politics after a bad incident in his family. Once he enters politics, all the top brass ministers, wives and son's of the ruling party are killed and murdered one by one. Ther's a super twist to this political thriller and the climax will be the most talked one in the film circuit.

That's what Shriya Saran recently did when she was in Amsterdam shooting for a song with Jiiva in Routhiram. She went around the city alone sightseeing and exploring the beauty of the place.
And back home, there have been rumours making the rounds that Shriya was approached to play Karthi’s heroine in Saguni.
But sources close to Karthi has dismissed it as mere rumours and said that they want a new face to play the heroine.

Karthi starrer Saguni is a story about a village lad arriving at the city and how the political situations change his life. A couple of songs in this film have been shot at the picturesque locations in Poland. Saguni’s director, debutant Shankar Dayal has said that a song penned by Na Muthu Kumar has been shot at the landscapes in Poland while another song by Viveka was shot at the architectural wonders of the country.
Apart from these songs, there are two other songs which are potential chartbusters, says Shankar Dayal. Santhanam is the comedian in Saguni and it is surely a laugh riot with Karthi, joining him, adds the director.

*Synopsis:*
Kamal Krishna (Karthi) is a soft guy based in Samarlakota. He strives hard to continue the charity work started by his parents. His ancestral house which is coming in the way of a Railway project will be ceased by the Government. He comes to Hyderabad to give a petition to the Chief Minister Bhoopathi (Prakash Raj) to save his house. But he faces insults and abuses
from all the leaders, especially the corrupt and cruel Chief Minister Bhupathi (Prakash Raj) . A dejected Kamal decides that gaining political power is the only way to save his property. And the rise of Kamal in politics forms the actual story.
*Performances:*
Karthi is simply superb as Kamal. He did a marvelous job in the first hour with impeccable comic timing and is equally good in the intense scenes. His brother Suriya who is a terrific actor needs to work out to look perfect for each role but Karthi is gifted with a flexible body with which he could easily switch genres.
Pranitha played the character of Sri Devi who is Kamal's mardalu in the movie. She has very limited screen presence and is okay in them. Radhika, Roja, Prakash Raj, Kota Srinivasa Rao are good in the limited roles they are offered. Santhanam's comedy track is good and had almost equal screen presence to hero in the first half.
*Technical Performance:*
Director Shankar Dayal is the black sheep. He let the movie down with awful screenplay and bad narration. The entire first half of the movie is wasted with out going in to the story. He did not take care to add enough 'build up' to the hero character which is very much needed in the political dramas. Cinematography by Muthaiah is good. Sreekar Prasad's editing should have been better in the first half. GV Prakash's songs are good. All of them are well picturised. And the back ground score is a total let down.
*Positives:*
1. Karthi's energy.
2. Coincidence with current AP politics
3. Good Cinematography and Superb picturization of songs
4. Presence of good star cast like Radhika, Roja, Prakash Raj, Kota
Srinivasa Rao and others

*Final Say:*
It is a honest attempt by Karthi but the director let him down. The movie is a complex political drama and people usually connects to stories where Zero becomes hero but this movie lacks the feel required for such movies to connect with the audience. However, some of the scenes in the second half connect to our current AP politics, people who are aware of political situation in the state might connect to it.

Karthi`s Saguni is a commercial mass masala movie made purely to work overtime at the box-office.
And it works to a large extent dues to its hero and his side-kick who provide the necessary ingredient in large doses.
Shankar Dayal formula is simple, a larger than life hero who comes to the city with a personal agenda. In the big bad city he is caught up in the turf war for power among rival politicians. Our hero, the street smart guy using brawn and machiavellian tactics cleans up the political system of the scums. He also gets what he wants from the new chief minister and takes the next train back home with the heroine in tow.
Don`t look for a story or logic, the hero has to win at all cost in commercial potboilers. The major highlight of the film is the rocking Tom and Jerry type comedy scenes between Karthi and Santhanam and the one-liners they say.
New girl Pranitha is there as Karthi`s love interest and the idea of naming these three characters as Kamal, Rajini and Sridevi brings the house down. And to add to the mirth there is Anushka playing a cameo as a Malayalee cop who falls for the handsome Kamal!
There are only black and white characters, an essential requirement for mass movies. So you have politicians as baddies - Prakash Raj as the malevolent and cunning chief minister, Radhika as an Idly Kada lady and moneylender who becomes the Mayor, Kota Srinivasa Rao as the idiotic politician, Kiran as the wicked and ambitious concubine of Prakash Raj and Roja as heroine`s mom.
The film laced with humour is packaged as a mass entertainer by Shankar Dayal who has woven certain recent political happening into the story. The film hints that money, muscle power and political horse trading are what win elections.
GV Prakash music is foot tapping and plays to the galleries. Velmurugan`s "Pottadhu Pathalai Maapillai.." has people dancing to the kuthu number while the melody sung by Sonu Nigam and Saindhavi, "Manasellam Mazhaiye..", is the pick of the lot. PG Muthiah`s camera is ok with some good top angle shots. Nani (Sreekar Prasad) forgot his scissors as the film needs trimming. On the downside the film at 2 hours 45 minutes is too long; characters disappear half way through the film.
Karthi is one reason to buy a ticket for the film. He has evolved as a bankable commercial mass hero and his dancing in "Vella Bambaram" song is a revelation. The moment Santhanam appears on the screen people burst out laughing, and he is too good. His comedy timing and his combination with Karthi is the perfect mix. Heroine Pranitha has nothing much to do other than looking glamorous. Radhika is impressive in a role with shades of grey, no better political villain in south screen than Prakash Raj .
On the whole if you are looking just for staple masala entertainment, Saguni is the right prescription.

karthi has definitely reached the upper echelons of stardom.. can't recall any young heroes who reached such a high pinnacle is such a short time
saguni is pure masala but we are saved from self-praise intro song and stupid/senseless fight scenes... in fact saguni seems to be those rare masala movies without a fight in the climax.
(yet another masala movie was shown on tv last night, and i could not even watch 10 mins - and this was a much-hailed recent movie

karthi is becoming monotonous - almost every movie he displays the same body language and acting - not much different karthi from PV and this... we end up seeing karthi, the actor and not the character.
heroine is very pretty like icing for cake, but her role is not even that... maybe glaze for the fruit?
gv prakash's bgm is nice.. songs are all kuththu songs (becos of aadukkalam?) but thank god its not noisy.
one song talks about the merits of alcohol, while the warning on alcohol is displayed... talk about mockery.
hell of a lot of quality actors ... really no idea why... nasar, rathika, delhi ganesh, etc andrea and anoushka make cameo appearances.
isnt prakas raj tired of doing the same role again and again.... always the same challenges, the same raising of voices, the same end....
the story is totally unbelievable and karthi's acts are not enough sagunish... can see once, if you have nothing better to do

கதை ரொம்ப சிம்பிள். லாஜிக் கூட ஒப்புக் கொள்ளக்கூடியதுதான்... நடைமுறைக்கு சாத்தியமா என்ற கேள்வி இருந்தாலும், இப்படியெல்லாம் நடந்தாகூட நல்லாதான் இருக்கும் என்றே தோன்றுகிறது.
காரைக்குடியில் உள்ள கார்த்தியின் ஒரே சொத்து, ஒரு பூர்வீக வீடு. அதையும் ரயில்வே திட்டத்துக்காக இடிக்கப் பார்க்கிறது அரசு. இந்த வீட்டை எப்படியாவது காப்பாற்றிக் கொள்ள வேண்டும் என்ற நோக்கத்துடன் சென்னை வரும் கார்த்தி, அமைச்சரிடம் மனு கொடுக்க, அது வழக்கம்போல 'போக வேண்டிய' இடத்துக்குப் போகிறது!
முதலமைச்சரிடம் போனால் நியாயம் கிடைக்கும் என்று போகிறார்... அங்கே உருவாகிறது பகை.
தன் வீட்டை மீட்க வேண்டுமானால் முதலில் முதல்வரை வீழ்த்த வேண்டும்... அதற்கான அரசியல் ஆட்டத்தை சகுனியின் சாமர்த்தியத்தோடும், கண்ணனின் மனிதாபிமானத்தோடும் ஆடுகிறார் கார்த்தி. ஆட்டத்தில் அபாரமாய் வெல்லும் அவர் கடைசியில் அரசியல்வாதியாகிறாரா? என்பது கிளைமாக்ஸ்.
விடலைத்தனமான லுக், தெனாவட்டான பேச்சு, எதிலும் விளையாட்டுத்தனம் என்றே இதுவரை கார்த்தியின் கேரக்டர்கள் அமைந்திருந்தன. முதல்முறையாக இதில் பக்குவமான, புத்திசாலித்தனமான ஆட்டம். அதை அவர் ஆடும் விதம் ரசிக்க வைக்கிறது.
குறிப்பாக இட்லிக்கார ரமணி ஆச்சியை மேயராக்குவதும், பீடி சாமியாரை நெல்லி சாமியாராக மாற்றும் விதமும், வீரத்தமிழன் முன்னேற்றக் கழக தலைவரை முதல்வராக்கத் தரும் ஐடியாக்களும் சுவாரஸ்யமானவை.
முகத்திலும்கூட ஒரு மெச்சூரிட்டி வந்திருக்கிறது கார்த்திக்கு. அவர் போடும் அரசியல் மாஸ்டர் பிளான்களை நம்ப வைப்பது அந்த மெச்சூரிட்டிதான்!
முதல் பாதியில் சந்தானத்தைப் பயன்படுத்திக் கொண்ட விதம், பின்பாதியில் அவருக்கான காட்சிகளை குறைத்து கார்த்தியை முன்னிலைப்படுத்தியிருப்பதும் இயக்குநரின் சாமர்த்தியத்தைக் காட்டுகிறது. நடனம், சண்டை என கிடைத்த வாய்ப்பிலெல்லாம் அழகாக ஸ்கோர் செய்திருக்கிறார் கார்த்தி!
சந்தானமும் கார்த்தியும் ரஜினி கமலாக அறிமுகமாகிறார்கள். சந்தானத்திடம், தான் சென்னைக்கு வந்த கதையை கார்த்தி சொல்லும் விதம் வித்தியாசம்.. நச்சென்று பதிகிறது.
என்ன... கதாநாயகியான ப்ரணிதாவின் பாத்திரம்தான் சுத்தமாகப் பதியவில்லை. உடன் படம் பார்த்த நண்பரின் கமெண்ட்தான் இதற்கு பொருத்தம்: "ஹீரோயின் அழகா இருக்காங்களா இல்லையான்னு கவனிக்கிறதுக்குள்ள அவங்க ரோல் முடிஞ்சு போச்சேண்ணே!"
பீடி சாமியாராக வரும் நாசரைப் பார்க்கும்போதே, சிரிப்பு எட்டிப் பார்க்கிறது. ஆன்மீகத்தை மார்க்கெடிங் செய்து அவர் சேர்த்த ரூ 1000 கோடியை தேர்தலில் இறைக்க வைத்து ஆட்சியைப் பிடிப்பது அட போட வைக்கிறது!
மோசமான முதல்வராக பிரகாஷ்ராஜ். நிஜ அரசியல் தலைவர்களின் தகிடு தத்தங்களை பிரகாஷ்ராஜ் மூலம் புட்டுப் புட்டு வைக்கிறார்கள். பாலம் கட்டுவதன் பின்னணி, பதவியை பங்கிடும் விதம் என எதிலும் குடும்பத்துக்குப் போகத்தான் மற்றவர்களுக்கு எனும் அந்தத் தலைவர் யாரை நினைவுபடுத்த என்பது தெரியாமல் இல்லை!
கோட்டா சீனிவாசராவ் வழக்கம்போல அருமை.
இட்லிக்கார ஆச்சி ராதிகா, மேயராக பதவி ஏற்க ஒவ்வொரு படிக்கட்டில் கால் வைக்கும்போதும், அவரது கடந்த காலம் நினைவில் வந்துபோவது சூப்பர். எல்லா அரசியல் தலைவரும் பதவி ஏற்கும்போதும், மோசமான உத்தரவுகளில் கையெழுத்திடும்போதும் இப்படி ப்ளாஷ்பேக் கொஞ்சம் எட்டிப்பார்த்தால், அவர்களின் மனசாட்சி சாகாமலாவது இருக்கும்!
ரசிக்கும்படி காட்சிகள் நிறைய இருந்தாலும், அவற்றை ஒரேயடியாகத் திணித்துவிட்டதுபோன்ற உணர்வு. நீளம் வேறு அதிகம். கொஞ்சம் கத்திரி போட்டு ஷார்ப்பாக்கி இருக்கலாம்.
கிரண் இறந்துவிட்டார் என்ற செய்தி வெளியாகும்போதே, அடுத்து என்ன நடக்கும் என்பது தெரிந்துவிடுகிறது.
ஜிவி பிரகாஷ் இசையில் இரண்டு பாடல்கள் கேட்கலாம். மனசெல்லாம் பாடலை படமாக்கியிருக்கும் விதம் ஜிலீர்... பிஜி முத்தையாவுக்கு ஸ்பெஷல் பாராட்டுகள்.
முதல் படத்தையே வித்தியாசமாகத் தரவேண்டும் என்ற முனைப்பில், அரசியல் என்ற ஒரு பெரிய கேன்வாஸுக்குள் விளையாடியிருக்கிறார் இயக்குநர் சங்கர் தயாள். சின்னச்சின்ன சறுக்கல்கள் இருந்தாலும், வெற்றி இலக்கைத் தொட்டுவிட்டார்!

Caught up with this today. The first hour drags the viewer through the background of the movie, through the conversation between Kamala kannan (Karthi) and Rajini Appathurai (Santhanam). Santhanam gets equal footage as the lead character, almost second hero status. Was this because of the uncertainty of propping the movie on the shoulder of Karthi alone? A few scenes / dialogues are funny. The rest are just dialogues. Siruthai first half comedy was funnier, for me, at least. The next hour and 25 odd minutes drag is even more on how Kamal manipulates the politicians to get the GO cancelling the railway project, thus saving his ancestral house. Pranitha looks pretty enough, though gets no screen time. Roja, Radhika et al come and go. Prakash Raj speaks and acts like in all other movies where he plays a baddie. Getting to be a bore. Watch once if you have nothing better to do, like me today. Or if you are conscientious enough to catch up on movies only in theaters.

Saw the movie yesterday at Chrompet Vetri. Morning show wasn't full but the later shows were houseful. I didn't like the movie much but don't have major complaints as well. People are blaming the second half but infact it was slightly better than the boring first half. Karthi is unable to maintain his timing with Santhanam. So, all the one liners from Santhanam fall flat. The movie goes some thing like a regular mass masala movie like the one shown below
1. Hero introduction
2. Hero introduction song out of nowhere
3. Comedian intro
4. Hero - comedian scenes
5. Hero Flashback on Villan and Romance flashback
6. Song
7. Hero fight-u [missing element but comes right on time]
8. Avamaanam to hero (romance failure) - Next minutes hero sings a +ve duet with the heroine
9. Loop 1 to 7 randomly till interval
Second Half
10. A mix of Satyaraj films (Inspired from Amaidhipadai a bit) and Mudhalvan
11. Karthi mattum jeichikittae irukkaru without a single failure
12. Subham _/\_
+ves
1. Radhika acting for few seconds when she becomes the Mayor of Chennai.
2. Santhanam - Karthi scenes
3. Rajini fans will love this film. Only they can enjoy the first half
4. Radhika's acting
5. Anushka - Super ah irukku that too in a police uniform. Actually, it took my mind to something else

5. Nothing new in story screenplay - is like eating regular food but without any excitement
6. They have wasted people like Nassar and Roja. Only Karthi is there in all the frames.
Looking at the saturated release and the timing, I think the movie will be a hit.
Question: Should I watch this film?
Answer : If you have read the extreme reviews in the hub and all of them are -ve, you will go the movie with zero expectations and you will like it. If you have read positive reviews, you will come and post that the movie was a blade mokkai etc. Bottomline: Hub review padikkama poi padam paarkaum. Purinjutha

Ok'ish movie. watchable once. 1st half is entertaining only because of santhanam. 2nd half is sothapal but works in parts. Saguni is a brilliant character in the epic, but the saguni character in the movie doesn't have even 5% of the original saguni's brilliance. That is the main drawback. Atleast, the director should have worked on some intelligent dialogues but the dialogues also falls flat. Most of the scenes are easily predictable which also dampens the movie furthermore. Commercial movies should have a powerful villan but the plans by prakashraj are laughable and are as old as the hills. Today villan's in tv serials plan much better than him.If the hero triumphs easily without facing any hurdles,obviously there is nothing in the screenplay to be a captivating one.
Karthi is charming,only because of him the movie worls upto certain extent in the second half. Hope he would be careful with the story selection in his future movies...

A predictable movie from beginning till end. The chemistry between Karthi and santhanam is equally good as in Siruthai. Pranitha had very little to do. Even if they used a mannequin doll instead of heroine no one would notice the difference. Prakashraj played against Surya and lost each time, same here with Karthi. Why even have a Villain in the movie, if he is just a dummypiece.
Gv Prakashrajs songs are ok, "Manasellam" (re used song, originally made in kannada for the movie Ullasa Utsaha) is the pick.
Sorry director u failed on delivering a good movie.

Thats true. Thats a wrong comparison. I don't watch many Mal movies but I know some of their actors like KalaBhavan Mani have been making crass movies. These guys try to ape the 'commercial success formula' and consistently fail. Some of the movie trailers/promos shown in Surya and Asianet look like those of TV serials. I quoted Thanmathra because if its star value. We have about 10 huge stars here and even the last one in this list would draw a larger salary than Mohan Lal. Enna prayojanam?
There are at least half a dozen neat movies of their stars with very less 'mass' elements coming out every year. And they get remade by us with all unnecessary extra fittings just to satisfy the frontbenchers. Yen Kerala'vula mattum B and C centers kedayaadhaa? Karthi’s rise as a box-office bet has been much swifter than Surya’s. His Paiyya was a surprise hit while Siruthai was a blockbuster. Somewhere on the road to success stars start believing they’ve developed ‘script sense’. The choice of films depend more on their roles than the film as a whole. They start depending on the clique they’ve cultivated. When an extremely talented director friend of mine wanted to sign Karthi, a cousin was sent to get a first impression of the story. My friend walked out. I’m sure he was offered better films but Karthi chose Saguni, which is the kind of film a friend will recommend for ‘timepass’. I’d rather watch The Big Bang Theory at home for free. Saguni is the kind of film that mocks the audience. “This is the kind of pea-brained fare you deserve,” the director seems to be saying. Well, the film got an overwhelming opening but collections have nosedived in Andhra and reports from elsewhere are not too good.
Santhanam, who’s having a dream run and gets a deafening applause when he appears on-screen, is the soul of the first half. He’s conveniently sent to jail during most of the second. He’s the darling of producers but I’m pretty sure insecure stars will either start sidelining him or will have his scenes chopped. It has happened to the best of comediennes like ‘Thai’ Nagesh. It won’t be long before Santhanam will be forced to don the hero’s role.

Everything else simbly waste. One-noted Santhanam was untolerable. And after a long time I saw some double/trible meaning dialocks / scenes. Vivek field-out aanadhum varradhillai pOlaiyE.. Karthi was OKish but andha kenaru vaayum, romaansum sagikkalai. Perfect match, the heroine. Chinni'ish side vaai. Strong cast but each one of them kept disappearing in regular intervals. Rajini-Kamal, rembba try panninaanga, its funny/good for the first time. adhukkappuRam tedious.
Its actually scary that I have seen each one of Karthi's films (completely). Guess I will not have the enthusiasm to watch his future films.

double meaning dialogues, oru flow've illaama irundhadhu... that azhagu/fun was missing... remember one dialog sandhanam says to karthi when he was rubbin the auto headlight... uvvae'nu irundhadhu... i love the ones like 'machaan... honeymoon'ku engadaa pOlaamnu irukka...' from BEB...

timing of that dialog is the reason for quoting it here...
especially when there is a double meaning dialogue... if its really funny, ppl feel less awkward, which i felt was awkward in saguni...
