Top commercial director Lingusamy has pulled off a major casting coup. He has roped in the hot and happening Arya and his favourite Run hero Madhavan along with leading heroine Tamannaah in his new film Vettai.
In an exclusive interview to TOI, Lingusamy said, "Vettai will be an action-packed family entertainer and a multi-starrer that will have all commercial ingredients that one would associate with a Lingusamy film. There will be something different in the story presentation and packaging. As of now, Maddy is yet to sign the film. Talks are in an advanced stage and, I hope he does the film."
Arya, fresh from the success of Boss Engira Baskaran, confirmed the news saying, "Yes, Vettai is my next film. It is an honour to work with Lingusamy, who I believe understands the pulse of the mass audiences."
Lingusamy said that the film, which was originally planned with Silambarasan as the hero, is set in a small town (most likely Thoothukudi) in south Tamil Nadu. Arya and Madhavan will be playing brothers in the film, which will have enough twists and turns as Maddy plays a cop. Says Lingusamy, "Comedy will be woven in to the plot and there won't be a separate comedy track."
Lingusamy will have his regular team working with him on this flick. He and music director Yuvan Shankar Raja, along with Na Muthukumar, will soon leave for exotic foreign locations to make plans for the five songs in the film. Added Lingusamy, "Vettai will be made on a big budget by producers Dhayanidhi Alagiri and Vivek Ratnavel. The shoot of the film will start in the first week of December and will be complete by mid March. We are planning to release the film as the big summer release in May 2011."

After the success of Paiyaa, director Lingusamy has announced his next venture. Titled Vettai, this movie will be produced and distributed by Cloud Nine movies who also distributed Paiyaa. Arya, the hero of the movie, has been paired with Tamannah this time. It was earlier announced that Madhavan will be a part of the movie. He was supposed to act in the movie as Arya's brother. The latest news is that Madhavan has backed out of the project. The reasons for his withdrawal are still unknown.
Vettai will also have Yuvan Shankar Raja scoring the music and Nirav Shah wielding the camera. Anthony will take care of the editing department. Vettai will be on the floors soon and is expected to be released in Summer 2011.

Director Lingusamy is known for giving several hits in the past, particularly with Vishal (Sanda Kozhi), Madhavan (Run) and Karthi (Paiyya). He is now directing Vettai for which he had roped in Arya as the lead star.
To a question on why he chose Arya for the role, Lingusamy had said that Arya had always wanted to be a part of his project and Vettai seemed to be the right choice. The director added that he had no doubt that Arya would reach greater heights than Vishal, Madhavan and Karthi.
Vettai is being produced by Durai Dayanidhi for Cloud Nine and Yuvan Shankar Raja will score the music.

Lingusamy's next movie after Paiyya will be Vettai, which stars Arya and Tamannah in lead roles. Actor Madhavan was approached for a role in the movie which is produced by Dhayanidhi Alagiri's Cloud Nine Movies. Rumours were rife that Madhavan backed out of the project though the reasons were not told. Now we have breaking news today that Maddy is indeed a part of the Vettai cast.
Madhavan, it is being told, will be playing a negative role in the movie. It will be interesting to see Maddy confronting Arya as we only know him bashing the baddies in his earlier movies. Yuvan Shankar Raja scores the music while Nirav Shah will be wielding the lens for Vettai.

I wouldn't mind Maddy acting in multistarrers or in negative roles. But not under directors like Lingusamy. Maddy must reject this offer. Lingusamy may come up with a decent role for Maddy, but having seen his previous films, chances are very slim.

Director Lingusamy's next film Vettai is all set to go on floors in March. The director has roped in Arya, Madhavan and Tamannaah for the lead roles. According to the director, Vettai will be a multi-starrer action-packed family entertainer that will have all the commercial ingredients one would associate with a Lingusamy film.
Vettai will be made on a big budget by producers Dhayanidhi Alagiri and Vivek Ratnavel. The film will be made simultaneously in Tamil and Telugu. Mahesh Babu will play the lead role in the Telugu version. Actor Madhavan will play a prominent role in both versions.

Madhavan is playing a police officer in the film, and Arya his younger brother. Plans are on to release 'Vettai' by the end of this year and an audio launch is expected at the earliest. The film is produced by Lingusamy's Tirupathi Brothers in association with UTV Motion Pictures.

Damma Damma Damma Damma and Thaiyath Thakka Thakka are the most engrossing songs I've heard from Yuvan sir's repertoire this year. He has the calibre but sadly doesn't display consistency in this. I always wait for that one OOTW song that he brings out every blue moon and this time not only have I been swept off my feet but also completely blown away by surprise. The carnatic keerthi portion in Damma Damma Damma Dammais soulfully relaxing to say the least. The other songs are so so but I'm not complaining as I could listen to these two on loop for a long time.

Sometimes composers are blamed unfairly (except Harris, who exempted from this argument), because it's the film directors who need to derive the best from the composers. Not everyone can be the Heavenly Trio +mAmA. Yuvan needs good inspiration from the filmakers too. He was trying, but Linggu gave him very little I guess.

Since I have vested interest in the movie (I like two fellers there) my take on the songs.
Dham Dham - Nice fun, Karthik always reliable. Can he be the current most versatile? Don't know.
Dhamma Dhamma - Heard before feel. Rejetted.
Thaiya Thakka - Sounds like a ARR song, I can't place my finger on.
Kattipidi - Got soul in it. My pick, likely.
papapa - Yeah, dad's percussion, nice to hear that part alone.
Overall, remba sumAr. But I am a cranky ole b*****d.

1 Given a situation It is the composer's talent and responsibility to come up with a good, bearable tune. Why would you seek inspiration from others or someone else to push the envelope.
2. To ensure that you have the best use of the lyricist tunekaaga thaan lyrics and not viceversa.
3. Look what song he has chosen to sing (take raaja or rahman for this matter) that shows his interest and how careless he is.
Offlate (this year 2011 atleast), YSR has been chucking out so many craps that the quality of his songs has declined considerably.

Tunes, Scale, Tunes. MGR used to sit and reject tunes after tunes before coming up with the One. Rajini, I read somewhere, listened to 40 tunes before choosing one for either Baasha or AnnAmalai. Like what Vir said, some directors leave it to Yuvan to come up with anything he wants. Selva and Bala, to an extent, have contributed to bring out the best. ARR always says that, "what can you take out of me?" This is film composition, not pop album. Since most filmakers here script their own films, it's their babies, their vision. They should envisage the theme before starting the film. They should guide the composers make sure the songs, the background scores are what they are incorporating to enhance the film. They should spend long time with the composers. What's happening now is, thanks to ARR, I guess, all the more wanted composers are seen as gods themselves. I always expect the best from Yuvan Shankaraja. Recent releases haven't been good.. (Kazhugu, Rajapattai now Vettai)...
My dissatisfaction with Vettai songs are they sound to simple. It might be ok for an S A Rajkumar movie, but not here. I hope his 2012 releases will satisfy me musically.

UTV’s Dhananjayan has said that theatre bookings for Vettai has commenced already. There is a good response for this multi-starrer which has Arya, Madhavan, Sameera Reddy and Amala Paul in the lead roles. The film is directed by Lingusamy with music by Yuvan Shankar Raja.
Dhananjayan has said that the theatre bookings will be done by January 3rd and the film is sure to hit the screens for Pongal 2012. So it is now certain that Nanban and Vettai will clash head on for this festival at the box office!

Samantha is a dummy piece and Mahesh babu had great screen presence compared to her in Dookudu. She had to work on her dressing sense & presentation. Chinmayi's voice portray her as a tomboy in movies while her natural voice is quite feminine & soft. Amala paul - Mudiyala.......
Anyway, Madhavan looks great & quite comfortable in the stills. Thanks to Lingu for bringing him back. It is refreshing to see him back on screen again (tamil)

Yes. As I mentioned, where they copied from is a different thing altogether. But we are copying many sequences & popular scenes from their films if not remaking the whole movie unofficially. I am not referring to official remakes. I have a different opinion on 'e-adichaan' copies though. I am not talking about everyone in tamil film industry. My point is only with reference to copies from telugu while I don't have diff of opinon on people copying from elsewhere. I do differentiate between people who copy it "as it is" with little amount of creativity thrown into it vs people who just take the core idea & develop on their own.
Reg talent, I feel telugu is little ahead of TN in terms of entertainment, comedy scenes & good masala movies. Our masala directors get tired & tend to repeat and become stale quickly compared to their telugu counterparts. Again, aadukalam and off beat movies ellam tamil la thaan nadakkum. Telugu audience don't accept it & we need not consider it. My point is on us copying from that industry including the cultural elements without feeling ashamed of it.

Linguswamy is one of the very few directors in Tamil cinema who has understood the pulse of the Tamil audience. That’s the reason he could deliver these successful wholesome entertainers. And, ‘Vettai’ is no exception in his line-up of successful movies!
The director has done it yet again with a superb commercial cocktail called ‘Vettai’ with all the right ingredients of an enjoyable entertainer!
‘Vettai’ has a very intense story of two brothers, Thirumurthy and Gurumurthy, who live for each other. The elder brother becomes honest police officer and the younger is a carefree one who is forced to take a different route in his life. The brothers fall in love with two sisters of the same village. The happy story takes a twist and the ‘Vettai’ starts. And, how the happy lives of these four is changed after this is told with high-octane action sequences.
Madhavan as an elder brother and an honest police officer has done a tremendous job and Arya’s has again wonderfully portrayed that happy-go-lucky guy! Sameera Reddy and Amala Paul have also given one of their best performances.
Ashutosh Rana, Nasser and Thambi Ramaiah has also come out with a neat performance.
Credit goes to the director who has etched the characters and cast the right stars.
‘Vettai’ is just a simple one line but the director has made it as a wonderful action based commercial script with romance, comedy and colourful songs to make it a super entertainer.
Yuvan Shankar Raja has scored the music and the songs are one of the pluses of the film. The song ‘Pappapaa…’ had been a rage even before the official music album of the film.
Nirav Shah’s camera work has supported Linguswamy to tell the story what he wanted; especially the action sequences and the colourful songs!
Anthony’s editing is another big work in the film.
Thirupathi Brothers has produced the movie and UTV Motion Pictures has distributed the film.
‘Vettai’ is the right film who wants to enjoy an action-packed entertaining movie. The film offers something more what you expect. Thanks to the director, Linguswamy and the cast and the crew!

The older one (Madhavan), gentle and sweet, avoids confrontations; the younger one (Arya) is not afraid to hit or be hit. When their policeman father dies the older brother joins the force in a city run by rival gangs. He makes a name for himself as a fearless corruption-buster while the younger one secretly does all the dirty work, knocking criminals around. Along the way they find time to marry a pair of sisters.
Plenty of Hindi movies — Bollywood, that is — open in New York, but Tamil films remain a rare commodity in theaters. If “Vettai” brings to mind “Singham,” a recent Hindi good-cop-cleans-up-bad-town movie, it’s not surprising. “Singham” started life as a Tamil film whose success spurred regional remakes.
Set in the coastal town of Thoothukudi and the surrounding countryside, “Vettai” partakes of the something-for-everyone formula, mixing the serious — corruption, evil gangs and limb-threatening fights — with the less so: songs, romance and comedy. It entertains without breaking any new ground, though it can also surprise.

Vettai - Masala cocktail without surprises
Vettai is a movie abut two brothers , one is courageuos , other is a weak and scared kind of type. They move to a new twon where two baddies rule and where two beauties live. You can guess the rest of the story.
Madhavan is usual great in acting, but I dont like him doing this role. Arya is cool and on top as usual. His weakness is still the dancing part. Many mass-masala heroes can dance well, he better learn it, if he has plans to become a mass hero.
Sameera Reddy is very annoying in this movie, if I could I'd slap her with a Satti. Amala Paul is doing a "Meenatchi" mistake... getting introduced in a good movie (Karuppusaamy Kuthagai Thaarar).. then falls flat and lost market when she tried masala movies. She earned good money but wasted her talent.
Villains/punchbags getting beaten time and time again as usual.
For a change Nassar provides the comedy, first time since Avvai Shanmughi.
Biggest dissapointment has to be Yuyan Shankaraja, BGM is average, and songs are not up to his usual standard.
N Lingusamy did OK, not his best but not his worst either. I'd rank this as his 4th best movie after: 1. Sandaikozhi. 2. Paiya. 3. Run.

not a single dull moment,racy screenplay with a lot of humor and heroes oda screen presence..expecting anything more than this from Lingu is abattham...definitely better than his previous 30cr BB paiyya...
Maddy(cakewalk) and arya rocked..equal importance..main reason to watch the film..nasser kuda super..that neck step chance e illa...
big letdown is the 2 heroines....yuvan's music..never heard such poor songs from him in a long time..worst form..B-2
response was tremendous...for many scenes semma claps in devi..yes maximum for Mankatha intro..
overall a good racy entertainer..

பொங்கல் விடுமுறைக்கு விஜய் நடிக்கும் நண்பன், மாதவன், ஆர்யா நடிக்கும் வேட்டை என இரண்டு படங்கள் வெளியாகின. அப்படங்கள் குறித்து ஒரு பார்வை:
நண்பன் : ஷங்கர் இயக்கத்தில் விஜய் நடித்து இருப்பதால் இப்படத்திற்கு பெரும் எதிர்ப்பார்ப்பு நிலவி வந்தது. அதனை பூர்த்தி செய்யும் வகையில் 12ம் தேதியே படத்தினை வெளியிட்டார்கள்.
12, 13 உள்ளிட்ட தேதிகளில் எந்த படமும் வெளியாகாததால் 'நண்பன்' படம் தமிழகம் முழுவதும் பல தியேட்டர்களில் அரங்கு நிறைந்த காட்சிகளாக நன்றாக கல்லா கட்டியது.
வழக்கமான மாஸ் படத்தினை போல இல்லாமல் விஜய்யின் எதார்த்தமான நடிப்பு, ஷங்கரின் பிரம்மாண்டமான இயக்கம், இந்தியில் வரவேற்பைப் பெற்ற கதை என படம் பார்க்க வரும் ரசிகர்களை நண்பனாக்கி இருக்கிறது 'நண்பன்'.
வேட்டை : மாதவன், ஆர்யா நடிப்பில் லிங்குசாமி இயக்கத்தில் வெளியாகி இருக்கும் படம். 'ரன்', 'பையா' படத்தினை போல, இளமைத் துள்ளலுடன் திரைக்கதை அமைத்து இருக்கிறார் லிங்குசாமி.
மாதவன், ஆர்யா, சமீரா ரெட்டி, அமலா பால் நடிப்பு, லிங்குசாமி வேகமான திரைக்கதை அமைப்பு உள்ளிட்டவை படம் பார்க்கும் ரசிகர்களை கவர்ந்து இருக்கிறது.
ரசிகர்களை மனதை வேட்டையாடி வருகிறது 'வேட்டை'. இதுவரை தாவணியில் வலம் வந்த அமலா பால், இப்படத்தில் 'கட்டிப்புடி என்னை கட்டிப்புடி' பாடலில் கவர்ச்சிகரமான உடைகளில் ஆடியிருக்கிறார்.
'நண்பன்' படத்திற்கு இருந்த எதிர்பார்ப்பு, 'வேட்டை' படத்திற்கு யு.டிவி நிறுவனத்தின் விளம்பர யுத்தி, இரண்டு படங்களுக்குமே அரசாங்கத்தில் இருந்து கிடைத்த வரி விலக்கு என தமிழ் திரையுலகத்திற்கு 2012 நல்லதொரு தொடக்கமாக அமைந்து இருக்கிறது

As for Yuvan, he has been on the downhill for a long time now... even the "home" production of Mankatha had awful songs. Maybe he should stick to BGM alone... none to beat him in that area now.

Lingusamy's Vettai doing wonders at Tamil Box Office
Lingusamy's Vettai, which was released two days after Nanban, has got an overwhelming response from the audience. Well, this has made the cash register ringing thereby making good collections at the Tamil Box Office.
Vettai was released in 440 theatres in India (in Tamil Nadu – 260) and in 110 theatres overseas. While the movie has earned Rs 14 crore in four days at the Domestic Box Office, it has collected close to Rs 1.5 crore at the International Market. The total collection of the film stands at Rs 15.5 crore.
The multi-starrer opened up to 85% occupancy on the release date followed by 90% on Sunday. The movie not only ran packed houses in the single screens but also in multiplexes in the metros. On an average, the per screen collection of Vettai comes close to Rs 3.40 crore in India, claims a source.
In the UK Box Office, Vettai has earned Ł17,605 (Rs 13.86 lacs) in its first weekend. The film is generating Ł1,174 per show in 15 screens. Whereas, in the US and Canada, the Tamil film has done excellent business. It has approximately collected $87,921 (approx. Rs 44.59 lacs) in 34 screens. The per screen average per show stands at $2,586.
The film has been released in six screens in Australia and it has managed to collect A$7,791 (approx. Rs 4.13 lacs). On an average, it is working out to A$1,299.
Vettai directed by Lingusamy stars Madhavan, Aarya, Sameera Reddy and Amala Paul. It is jointly produced by Thirupathi Brothers and UTV Motion Pictures.

Maddy should do action, mass masala, commercial movies to sustain his market. Otherwise, you would only get Manmadhan ambu, Vetti kind of roles. Intha role ellam character artist or a new face should do. Not just him any actor. Romba nalla padamnu pop corn crowd ah nambuna, kadasila per 2nd ah varatha paarthu varutha pada thaan mudiyum. We should blame only Maddy for this. I went to the movie only for Madhavan (I didn't knew that mankatha scene is there). Lingusamy ellam tharuthala and I have lost my respect to him long back. ஆர்யாதான் வில்லன்களை அடிப்பது எனத் தெரியாமல் மாதவனை எல்லோரும் புகழ்வதும் அவர் பம்முவதும் ரகளையான எபிசோட். வில்லனைத் தப்பிக்கவிட்டு என்கவுன்டரில் போடுவது, கைத்தடிக்கு டீ வாங்கித் தந்து அப்ரூவர் ஆக்குவது எல்லாம் 'அட’ ஆக்ஷன் ஐடியாக்கள். ஆனால், மெயின் வில்லன் எப்போதும் நாலைந்து அடியாட்களுடன் சும்மாவே நிற்பதும் அடுத்தடுத்து வரும் பல காட்சி கள் யூகிக்கக்கூடியதாகவே இருப்பதும் 'வேட்டை’யின் ஓட்டைகள். இருந்தாலும் ட்ரீட்மென்டில், 'வேட்டை’ மாஸ் மசாலாப் பேட்டை!

i didnt see vettai yet, but have seen MMA...... athula Maddy certainly added more value to the character...... especially towards the climax..... imagine a less star valued (for a hero) guy in that role (say a madan bob or a nasser or prakash raj) i dont think it would have been that enjoyable..of course this is only my view..and imho, kamal ku than antha padathula romba light character not for Maddy........ and certainly Vettai wouldnt have been a hit if they had gone for a new face / some retired guys in Maddy's role (say some one like Karthik as in that ArunVijay film)

I am the one who said the first line in your post. But I never said avoid all multi starrers. If multi starrers are like this and MMA, I would go with good solo films. If multi starrers are like engaeyum eppothum, mankatha, then I would always go with them (equal weightage for all again not w.r.t screenspace). I don't see anything different in this for Maddy. Subras, It is not about whether the chemistry working or not but how the multi starrer is to pull audience to the theatre and keep them interested. Personally, we wouldn't like the film. That's a diff matter altogether.

definitely MMA had better scope for Maddy..result didnt do him any good....in that aspect vettai is a better result than MMA(assuming that Vettai is a hit)...this is kind of resurrection for him going by the response...never heard any one talk about him in TN for 2 yrs untill Vettai...
when Maddy says "adikardhu kathu illada puyal..anga singam nikkudhu paar" pointing towards Arya thats where the problem is...there he is made second fiddle..he deserves more than that...
but these kind of multi starrers in general generates a curiosity and helps movies to take a opening..

him not having any ambition means no ambition to compete in the RAT race..he has loads of ambitions to give good films and good performances going by his twitter and his interviews..in 2 languages means double delight...
for people who are whining(incl me) that he has become this that..epdi irundhavar..just one thought :
arjun,sarath kumar,karthik,prabhu,vijaykanth,satyaraj...all these guys never competed with R &K for a long period of time..but does that mean that they didnt have a successful career?...they are stars in their own right...TFI gives and will always give that space...
Maddy will at least be as popular as these guys after 20 yrs...with the talent he has got and not to forget the work he has already done..he is heading only one way..that is FORWARD...

Vettai :: A Decent Entertainment. For me this is better than Paiyya except songs. Happened to watch while traveling in Bus. Crowds too enjoying. Big Screen watching could have been much better.
Arya - Improving with every movie. Comedy comes pretty good for him.
That constable character was one more enjoyment. Songs were ok. amala paul looks lovely.
Madhavan is becoming polished version of Prabhu. Thambi yaa over sound koduththavar, intha padathula Thambikku Jaalra poadura character. Poana paogattum nnu "enakkae Shutter" aannu sound aa dialogue onnu koduththitaar director.. Madhavan fans can be happy for that for another few years. Looks like Madhavan is pretty happy choosing "Something is better than nothing". So as his fans.

5 sittings and still haven't completed this. What an absolute mokkai of a film?! Watched mainly because of Maddy and Arya. Maddy was sorta OKish in that wimp character but Arya? What a colossal disappointment. None of the scenes showcased his natural comic timing. Not one scene was even remotely funny.
