Welcome to the great Mahasivarathiri-Valentine weekend, when the box-office is going to rock.
There are two Tamil releases Vishal’s romantic comedy Theeratha Vilayattu Pillai and Srikanth’s Rasikkum Seemane, two Hollywood international releases (same day release with US market), the rom-com Valentine’s Day and The Wolfman. Nagarjuna-Mamta Telugu masala Kedi.
However the biggest February 12 release is going to be Karan Johar’s, Shah Rukh Khan-Kajol My Name Is Khan releasing in six Chennai screens. The film after all the controversies surrounding it is going to take an extraordinary opening. It has been sold out for the weekend in many screens in the city.
Sun Pictures marketing has made Theeratha Vilayattu Pillai hot. Meanwhile there is acute theatre shortage in Chennai with many of the earlier releases squeezed out to accommodate new releases.

He apes Suriya to the hilt in the romantic scenes, walking, dancing, even rolling eyes like the other actor. In addition, there are a couple of stunt sequences where he bashes up a hundred goons; not even a steel kadapparai fazes him. Otherwise, he delights putting one over the girls, drinks, smokes, and tries a comic act that pales in comparison to his cohorts'. If anything, it's Santhanam and Sathyan, who take the credit for a reasonably entertaining first half.

After a lukewarm outing in Sathyam and Thoranai, Vishal attempts to play in a different arena this time, with a different make over, in a lighter romantic pitch with three beautiful maidens to give him company in Theeratha Vilayattu Pillai directed by newcomer Thiru who has done a decent job in his maiden flick.
TVP is about the romantic journey of Casanova Vishal and the lessons that he learns in his course. Vishal is the only child of bank manager parents and is armed with a different attitude. He wants only the best in every thing and even for a purchase of a cell phone, he goes all out to select the best. He extends this attitude to choosing his life partner and in the process corners three women- millionaire Neetu Chandra, Tanushree Dutta, sister of a thug Prakash Raj and Sara Jane a middle class girl and plays the game of love with them to choose his wife. The twists and turns Vishal encounters in his ‘mission-best-wife’ form the crux of TVP.
Are options required for love? If so can you call it love? Can women be portrayed in a negative vein just because they are not able to marry their loved ones due to circumstances? Thiru may attract the ire of true lovers in these aspects.
Vishal makes an impression with his chiseled, well toned body and uber chic costumes designed by sister-in-law Shriya Reddy. The sequences where he gets trapped with Neetu Chandra and challenges her later are appreciable. Of the three ladies, Neetu Chandra makes an impression. Prakash Raj does not have much work. Sneha makes a surprise cameo.
Vishal and Santhanam’s comedy is enjoyable. Although Mayilsamy and Sathyan join in the merriment, Santhanam stands out in the humor department. The scene where Prakash Raj comes to seek an alliance is a rib tickler. Another sequence when Sara Jane who is in love with Vishal enters his household unannounced, carries on regular chores preparing coffee and serving to completely bewildered parents of Vishal and later proceeds to enter Vishal’s bedroom makes an interesting and amusing viewing.
On the technical side, camera work by Arvind Krishna is apt. Theeratha Vilayattu Pillai and Poo Mudal Pen catch your attention in Yuvan Shankar Raja’s music. Costumes are very stylish and suit the mood of the film.
On the flipside, first half moves on a languorous pace sometimes testing patience. Vishal's chauvinistic antics may not be liked by certain sections of the audience.
TVP is a film that can be enjoyed with friends on a lighter note. Women may become extra cautious and wary with men’s tricks and ways after TVP.
Verdict: A few lessons on love!

summary of sify review:
In fact, the film's first half is engaging with one-liners from Santhanam. But post-intermission the film nosedives drastically, its screenplay skidding off the path and going into predictable territory as the film meanders its way through 2 hours and 50 minute.
The emotional scenes in the second half are so laboured; the film loses its grip on your attention completely. What started out as such an enjoyable screen experience is irreparably damaged by careless writing, particularly projecting the hero as a male chauvinist.
Yet, Theeratha Vilayatu Pillai is not entirely unwatchable. The production values, costumes and camera by Aravind Krishna are good. Songs by Yuvan fail to impress. Vishal is earnest and sincere and struggle hard to have a change of image. But does this new image suit him? He imitates Suriya in body language and dialogue delivery.
Among the girls, it is Neetu Chandra who plays her part well. Sarah is a big letdown as she looks wooden throughout and her lip sync is pathetic. Tanusree is no heroine material. Ultimately, it's an average film, at best time-pass viewing. Watch it with no expectations and you won't be too disappointed.

We have seen Ranbir Kapoor pulling it off in style in 'Bachchna He Hasina' in style. So tries Vishal in 'Theeradha Vilaiyattu Pillai'. A romantic entertainer targetting front-benchers (Vishal himself says this), the movie has its moments making you laugh and also go red at few places.
Debutant filmmaker Thiru has woven a script that is predominantly aimed at appeasing youngsters. Vishal as Karthik symbolise an upper middle class youth who is choosy in his life. What happens when he comes across three beautiful women of different shades and colour forms the story.
Vishal, who proved his mettle as an action hero in his earlier films has gone in for an image make-over. He has transformed into a cool Casanova, who gets hooked to girls quite easily and comfortably. His gets his comical act well in the company of Santhanam. The Vishal of 'Chellame' days is back to woo the hearts.
With three girls around (Neetu Chandra, Sarah Jane and Tanushree Dutta), glamour is abundant. What is interesting here is Thiru coming up with a well-compiled entertainer which is different from the films of such genre. The major lacunae in the script however is the second half that proceeds on a predictable path.
Karthik (Vishal) is a business graduate who is pampered by his family. A youth who is choosy about his priorities, he thinks more than once before deciding on choices before him. Be it clothing or other accessories, he takes he makes decisions only after going through all options.
He applies the same when it comes to choosing his life partner. For, Karthik comes across three beautiful girls Jyothi (Tanushree Dutta), Priya (Sarah Jane) and Tejaswini (Neetu Chandra).
Jyothi is a sports woman and has reservations against men. A girl with feminist ideology, she however as expected gets hooked on to Karthik. Before Karthik could settle down with her, he gets more options in the form of Priya, a girl who strongly rooted in traditional ideas and believes in cultural values. Next in the line is Tejaswini, a top-notch millionaire in the town.
Interestingly all the three fall for Karthik. And he gets into a spot of bother because of the events that proceed. What happens then and whom he marries forms the climax, which has a surprise twist in it.
Vishal suits the character well, but at comical scenes his dialogue delivery leaves a lot to be worked out. It is a meaty role which has everything a hero has to perform. In trendy and colourful costumes, he hogs all limelight.
Among the girls Sarah Jane is a delight to watch. Though she looks alien for the role, her pleasant looks wins for her. Neetu Chandra goes gaga with glamour while Tanushree Dutta is apt for the character she played.
Santhanam as usual walks away with applause with his humourous one-liners. The rest of the cast includes Mouli, Prakash Raj and Mayilsamy who chip in with their best. Sneha and Mallika Kapoor play cameo.
Yuvan Shankar Raja's music is average with just a couple of songs hummable while Aravind Krishna's cinematography is cool and pleasant.
Presented by Sun Pictures, ‘Theeradha Vilaiyattu Pillai’, produced by G K Film Corporation is a movie aimed for target audience and it does serves the purpose. A delight apparently for those who live beyond the borders of a city.

Vishal dosen't have much fans here, and it will cost more for rental if they have played at cineplex. Also Asal is doing well in Scarborough cineplex, so why would they even try to put TVP!!
