Paiyaa - Magic journey
There are many reasons to look forward to ‘Paiya’. The film stars Karthi, the ‘Paruthiveeran’ hero in the lead role. Tamannah, one of the hottest actresses in Tamil, is the heroine of the film.
And what more? Besides directing the movie, Lingusamy, one of the successful filmmakers of Tamil cinema, is also producing it.
It is expected that Karthi's image will have a complete makeover after the movie. Confirming this, Lingusamy says, “"I am exploring the charming and handsome side of Karthi and that's what you get to see in Paiya.”
“Paiya’ is an urban story and tells the interesting events happening in the lives of a pair of lovers (Karthi and Tamannah). Besides, Milind Soman and Sonia Deepti are playing pivotal roles. The movie was widely shot in Bangalore, Hyderabad and Mumbai.
On the movie, Lingusamy says, “It is a travelogue kind of action adventure. Karthi starts a journey from Bangalore to Mumbai along with Tamannah. The hurdles they face during their trip and how they overcome everything is ‘Paiya’.”
Elaborating more, he says, "the film is all about the protagonist meeting his love and hate on his journey. The action packed entertainer is being made in a different way with highways and travel as the backdrop."
The filmmaker is happy with Karthi and Tamannah's performance and is all praises for their commitment and involvement. “Both are professionals. They dedicate themselves fully to work,” says Lingusamy.
A song "Suthudhey Suthudhey Boomi", choreographed by Sabeena Khan, is expected to be one of the highlights of the movie. It was shot at Prasad Studios in Chennai, where a grand set was erected by art director Rajeevan.
However, thanks to computer graphics and visual effects, the background of the song will change to dense forests and lush mountain ranges, it is said. A rain song "Adada Mazhaida", featuring Karthi and Tamannah, was shot at the Athirappilly waterfalls recently.
As things are nearing completion and the film is ready to hit the screens, expect for some fireworks from Lingusamy.

Music review
If someone say Yuvan Shankar Raja is not in his best form this year, it is obvious that they had not listened to songs from ‘Paiyaa’. The music composer has come out with a beautiful album in association with Lingusamy, which has five scintillating songs that make you fall in love as soon as you listen to them.
Lending ample support to Lingusamy’s claim that the Karthi-Tamannah starrer would be a racy and breezy entertainer, the songs by Yuvan set the perfect mood besides raising the levels of expectation on the movie.
1. Adada Mazhaida - Listen here
Singer: Rahul Nambiar, Saindhavi
Reminding you ‘Dhavani Potta Deepavali…’ from ‘Sandakozhi’ is ‘Adada Mazhaida…’ The song by Rahul Nambiar and Saindhavi sounds good and creates a peppy mood. Saindhavi's rendition towards the end is noteworthy. Yuvan’s folk template works well.
2. En Kadhal Solla - Listen here
Singer: Yuvan
It touches the soul straight away. Yuvan, as usual, excels in orchestration particularly in the first interlude. The humming part that comes mildly in the background in between is addictive. Yuvan has improved a lot in rendition, one can say by all means.
3. Poongatre Poongatre - Listen here
Singer: Benny Dayal
A catchy tune, ‘Poongatre Poongatre’ gives a mesmerizing feeling living true to the lyrics. Benny Dayal’s rendition adds value to the lyrics. The song has got all ingredients to strike a chord with younger generation.
4. Suthudhe Suthudhe - Listen here
Singer: Karthik, Sunitha Sarathy
The cream of the soundtrack is ‘Suthudhe Suthudue’. The song, which starts in an ordinary note, picks up soon and enthralls as it progresses. The ‘ra-ra-ra-radhe’ bit is awesome and is sure to be hummed by the audience in the coming days.
5. Thuli Thuli - Listen here
Singer: Haricharan, Tanvi
The song is so beautifully rendered by Haricharan and Tanvi. The music in the beginning and the ’sel sel avaludan sel’ part is too good, though they remind of me some catchy earlier songs. The tune and Na Muthukumar's lyrics complement each other.
Overall, 'Paiyaa' strikes an instant chord with all qualities to top the charts. In other words, Lingusamy has extracted the best from Yuvan.

While speaking about the romantic story of Paiyya Lingusamy says that it’s a pleasant journey between Karthi and Tamannah where he travels with her to Mumbai all the way.
Then the feeling of love on Tamannah starts in him and he shares his feeling with his girl friend in Chennai.One day she suddenly make a call and asked him “How far are you both”.For that Karthi says “I think 500 kilo meters”.And he also says that “We can feel the ice and fire which is behind our back. In the similar way we both are”. In this way the story of romance keeps on moving between Karthi and Tamannah all through the film.

tamanna,a north indian girl,was chased by the villains as she has taken away a large sum of money from them after working with them for a few months.she finds karthi during her travel and the travel continues with him against the odds along the travel.She calls karthi as "paiya" - and hence the title.the romance and the action sequences develops the screenplay henceforth - making it a travel movie.In climax there is a big unexpected twist...after surpassing all their blockades - tamanna reveals the truth..she being a north indian has called him as baiya in hindhi which karthi, as he is a tamilian mistook, as paiya.

Starting with the film ‘Pugaipadam’ which released on the first day of the New Year Tamil audience have seen over 15 new releases in just two months into the New Year. But Tamil film industry is still looking for that one big hit.
Almost all the big stars except Rajini and Kamal had at least one release in the New Year so far. But none of them could create the much wanted magic at the box office.
Vijay’s Vettaikkaran, Dhanush’s Kutty, Karthi’s Aayirathil Oruvan, Sarath Kumar’s Jaggubhai, Ajith’s Asal, Vishal’s Theeradha Vilaiyattu Pillai, Srikanth’s Rasikkum Seemane, Prasanna-Sibiraj’s Naanayam – none of them could retain the excitement they created on the first day for longer period. Even small films like Porkkalam, Kathai and Dhairiyam created some reverberation closer to release.
Till now according to pundits only the non-star ‘Thamizh Padam’ has made both the makers and viewers happy alike. ‘Goa’ claims victory and ‘Vinnaithandi Varuvaya’ has just released. So the success rate is only about ten percent in two months, which is alarming. Next week will have an array of releases, mostly small budget films, looking to change the trend.
So now all eyes are on ‘Paiyaa’ which expected to release in March after a few postponements. The film is a big ticket with a hot shot director Lingusamy and heart throbs Karthi and Tamannah in the lead. The songs have already topped the charts and the first talk of hope has begun. With the holiday season nearing the industry must restore the audience faith of good entertainment soon. Will ‘Paiyaa’ do it?

Director Lingusamy is ready and raring to go with his home production Thirrupathi Brothers Film Media’s Paiyya, starring Karthi and Tamannaah in the lead. The big news is that the film is going to be distributed by Dhyanidhi Alagiri and his Cloud Nine jointly with Thirrupathi Brothers.
A press release says: “Dhayanidhi Alagiri’s Cloud Nine Movies will present Paiyya. Cloud Nine is a name to reckon with in Tamil cinema having released Suriya starrer Varanam Ayiram followed by their successful production venture Thamizh Padam. It is highly expected that this movie would be a hat trick for Cloud Nine Movies and also for Karthi.”
The Paiyaa team including the lead pair Karthi and Tamannaah, director Lingusamy, cameraman Madhie, editor Antony, comedian Jagan, lyricist Na Muthukumar and dialogue writer Brinda Sarthy met the media on Sunday (March 7) afternoon at Green Park.
Says Lingusamy: “The film is going to the censors tomorrow and once that is done we will tell you the final release date. I plan to release the film in the first week of April. It is a cute, youthful and colourful film for young audience.”
Said Na Muthukumar: “I have done all the songs in the film and Yuvan’s music is already a hit with college goers and ringtone is hot.”
For Karthi it’s a welcome relief to be seen as a modern city guy as he is in real life especially minus the black body paint he had to use earlier. Said he, “I really enjoyed doing this film after the two experimental films I did earlier. It’s a stylish, musical, visually stunning travel film shot mostly on highways and cameraman Madhie has done some risky shots at high speeds. Comedy is inherent in the first half in the hero character itself while in the second half actor Jagan provides some comic relief. Tamannaah’s work is commendable and she learnt four pages of dialogues which she rattled off without prompters in the car scenes. Though she was in the back seat and I was in the front seat in most scenes, the chemistry has come out really well all thanks to director Lingusamy. The toughest part of the film however was dancing with her but thanks to Brinda, Raju Sundaram and Shabeena Khan I managed to pull it off credibly!”
Tamannaah revealed, “Usually chemistry is talked about between the lead pair but in this film the chemistry between Lingusamy and Madhie sir is amazing. They were so much in sync with each other. In fact the chemistry between Karthi and me in the Suthudey Bhoomi… song is all thanks to Madhie sir who pulled it off with just the right camera angles. Lingusamy sir’s constant feedback and encouragement after each scene were instrumental in us giving our best each time.”

At the seeing ‘Paiyaa’ the hot pair of Karthi and Tamannah is the talk of Kollywood. Both of them have performed excellently according to insiders. At the recent press conference Karthi said ‘Paiyaa’ will introduce the real modern Karthi to the people and Tamannah to her part said her role in the film is very close to the ideal heroine role she was dreaming about.
Now the hot pair of Karthi and Tamannah may be seen again in ‘Siruthai’. ‘Siruthai’was dormant for some time after its announcement last year because Karthi got busy with ‘Aayirathil Oruvan’ and ‘Paiyaa’. After getting out of slumber ‘Siruthai’ is under going many changes. Kathir who earlier did ‘Thenavattu’ was supposed to direct ‘Siruthai’. But now the megaphone has been handed over to Cameraman Siva. Siva who is the brother of actor Bala after doing cinematography for a few films in Tamil moved to Andhra as a director. His first Telugu film ‘Vikramarkudu’ was a super duper hit and so he has been brought in to direct this Tamil remake of his hit film.
Now when the heroine selection is on the entire team is hell bent on signing Tamannah. Even Karthi prefers her.

One of the most expected movies of this year ‘Paiyaa’ has announced its release date. The film which was to have hit the screens in February is finally releasing on April 2.

Paiyaa, which is directed by Lingusamy, is due to be released next month. The film has Karthi and Tamannah playing the lead roles. The movie has
created a lot of expectations among the movie buffs because of the Lingusamy-Karthi combination, not to mention the leading lady Tamannah.
Yet another reason for the expectation meter going up is that Lingusamy has presented a Chevrolet car to the film’s editor Anthony. The director is impressed by the work at the editing table that he decided to show his appreciation by presenting the editor with a car.
This is reason enough to expect the movie! Hope Paiyaa will not disappoint.

Paiyaa proved that it is the much-expected film of the year! The advance booking for this film opened at 10 am on Wednesday March 31st, 2010 in Chennai and within an hour the bookings for the first three days were closed! The movie buffs were at a frenzy to lay their hands or click their tickets. The bookings for the week day shows are on and the tickets are being lapped up by enthusiastic fans.
The ticket sales show that Paiyaa will have a huge reception. The movie stars Karthi and Tamannah in the lead and is directed by Lingusamy. Music is by Yuvan Shankar Raja and it has been topping the charts already. The film is distributed by Cloud Nine Movies.

What is Paiyaa all about?
Paiyaa is a simple romantic action film. It is a very plain love story and is not too deep. Although the romance is basic, it is presented very well. Since it is a road film, there is only journey in it. And the story has been narrated in a visual and musical manner. It is a pleasant neat film that can be enjoyed by youngsters and by the family audience alike. It is exciting for me because after Paruthi Veeran and Aayirathil Oruvan, I feature as myself in Paiyaa without black make-up and dirty clothes. I have come in clean costumes in a presentable fashion. This is the first such time for me and I am being re-introduced as a new face in Paiyaa.
Experience with Lingusamy?
My first directors are task masters. They were very clear about what they wanted and how I should perform. Selva is a bit different in the sense that he gives you a little maneuverability to perform and improvise the portrayal.
Lingusamy lets you perform and then corrects. He does not come with fixed notion to the sets and any kind of inputs are welcome. He gives a lot of freedom to work on your role. It was a good learning experience for me. I have implemented many things that I have learnt. And secondly in Paiyaa, it is not a character unknown to me. I enjoyed working with Lingusamy and there were many useful interactions to hone every scene. He has taught me the difference between being a star and a hero. When my friends (especially Trisha) came to know that I am going to work with Lingusamy, they were certain that I was going to enjoy my stint with him. His style is to extract work without troubling the artists. What I like in him the most is that he enjoys his work. He knows the reactions of the audience very well-when they would clap for a scene, when they would laugh and things like that. I think that is the secret of his success.
How did you get the opportunity to work on your first film?
Tamannah the current hot property of Kollywood is the greatest plus for Paiyaa. There are only two main characters in the film which travels through out. Generally it is difficult to react to someone who does not know the language but it was very easy with Tamannah as she used to take her dialogue sheets well in advance, write them in English and speak which would sound just like Tamil. She is very hard working and sincere. As she is deeply involved in her work, no time was wasted on the sets. Our discussions were only work-centric and I liked such working style but where I was caught on my left foot is in the dance segment. Tamannah dances very well. This style of dancing is very new to me which I have not done earlier. In my previous films whatever I did was only called dance but in Paiyaa there were dance movements and dance masters and I had to do a decent job to make the scene appealing.
What about your romantic scenes?
Jagan has done an important role in the film. If I take charge of comedy in the first half, he does the honors in the second half. He wondered, “Hey, everyone is talking about chemistry between you and Tamannah, but I see you in the front seat and she at the back seat of the car. What kind of romance is that?” This is precisely the romance that you would see in Paiyaa. Romantic scenes are lesser in the film as the two are not known to each other and are complete strangers. However the romance would be much highlighted in the song sequences. Visuals in the song sequences have come out brilliantly. The absolute intensity of the romance would be palpable in the song sequences.
Yuvan Shankar’s music?
Yuvan has been with me right through. He was my junior in school and I am very fond of him. In Paiyaa, all the songs have turned out to be superhits. When Lingusamy narrated the story I realized it is a musical film. Adhering to this need, Yuvan has scored. After listening to every composition, I would tell the director that this was the best and realize the next one was better than the earlier one. And there is variety in every number. If Adada mazhaida is a folksy piece, then the first track is a soft romantic one and En Kaadal Solla is city based number. There is as much variety in music as in visuals. Background score in Paiyaa is brilliant. For the first twenty odd minutes, there would not be much of dialogues and the story moves through music. Yuvan’s role is phenomenal in Paiyaa. Now a days, Yuvan’s name has become synonymous with love.
Your favorite song and can you hum it for us?
Suthude Suthude is my favorite number when I was acting in the film. When I was performing the emotions were intense for this number. But ‘En Kaadal Solla’ is what I frequently listen to. I’m sorry I can’t sing.
About Milind Soman, the villain…
I first met Milind Soman at Sathara, a place near Pune, when we were shooting a fight sequence. He looks like a hero and I a villain. He is after all the most handsome man of India right? Milind Soman still looks hot. Lingusamy always wants to make films stylishly and to steer away from the routine stuff, he had cast Milind Soman. He is not the typical villain in veshti with moustache but a stylish one in jeans. As his character is a Mumbai based one, he has spoken in Hindi but due to his interactions, it was easy to understand him. His expression and body language were brilliant. He used to score in minute expressions and breeze past. As Paiyaa is romance based film, villainy in it will not be powerful as in any of the other Lingusamy’s films and will be simple but effective.
Did you use a body double for fight sequences?
In olden days, body doubles were used but now the audience finds out very easily and they cannot be cheated. I have not used a body double. Stylish fight sequences are the usual highlight in Lingusamy’s films. The making and presentation would be different. Similarly, I feel the fight sequences will be much talked about in Paiyaa. This is the first time for me to feature in such action sequences. Car chase scenes would be very interesting and stunt choreography is very novel in Paiyaa. On the whole action sequences are very powerful and different in this film.
Any unforgettable scene?
There were many unforgettable scenes in Aayirathil Oruvan as it was a new attempt. However Paiyaa is the usual film that you see but presented in a different format. As the film is woven around the Highway, this film becomes unique. I think this is the first time such an attempt is made. As it was shot in the highway, a minimum of two to three cameras were used for filming. So we brought in a truck from Mumbai and designed three cars in the same format and we were toggling them as per the requirement. As I love driving, I enjoyed the shooting. I liked all the car chasing sequences. There is a scene where the car goes in reverse in the opposite traffic. That was a thrilling one.
Any risky shot?
There is a scene where ten cars will be chasing and there emerged another car in the perpendicular direction. I was not informed about this. Ten cars were moving at full throttle in an open field and I spotted this Maruthi van. Usually, Maruthi vans don’t have good pick up and move very slowly. I saw cameraman Madhi sitting inside the van when I came close to the vehicle. They tried to speed up and come along with me but they could not. All these ten vehicles should avoid the Maruthi van and everything should happen in a fraction of a second. Madhi dropped his camera in fear. It was a close shave. When I see that shot in the film, it appears really scary. It was indeed chilling because we wee not informed about the Maruthi van. Although the stunt sequences were taxing to me, the outputs are powerful. While filming some of the stunt sequences in Mumbai, I was suffering from terrible back pain but could not cancel the schedule. I wore belt and performed.
What in your opinion is the USP of Paiyaa
Tamannah has been portrayed so beautifully. Music is one of the big USPs. Another strong aspect of Paiyaa is its making especially cameraman Madhi’s work. Technically, Paiyaa will stand out.
Does Paiyaa have any resemblance to Ram Gopal Varma’s Road?
No, absolutely not! Paiyaa is completely different. Another interesting aspect of the film will be the dialogues that lead to the friendship between the lead pair. When a young man meets a beautiful young girl, it is only normal that he would go all out to impress the girl. These sequences would appear very natural and amusing.
Paiyaa in a nutshell...
Paiyaa will be a film to which you can come with your family, enjoy, laugh heartily, savor the beautiful visuals, applaud and take home a pleasant feel. It is undoubtedly a clean film and you can take your children. Normally Lingusamy’s films will not be bold and Paiyaa is no exception either.

The director of ‘Run’, ‘Sandai Kozhi’ etc. is back with another racy action adventure, 'Paiyaa'. Expect action-packed scenes in this movie as well.
Boy O’ Boy! The movie is an action journey no doubt! At no frame of the movie, will anyone feel bored or tired.
The Story:
The movie starts off in Bangalore, with Karthi (Shiva) who lives with his friends who try to get him a job desperately. Karthi is a guy who is easy on life and has a ‘thennavatu’ attitude On one such occasion of a job hunt, Karthi spots Tamannah (Charulatha) while getting down the bus and falls for her instantly.
Well, we all have grown up seeing such scenes, in fact in Lingusamy’s ‘Run’ itself, when Madhavan sees Meera Jasmine, and falls for her at the bus stand, and déjà vu - the same spot- Bus stop!
Unfolding the plot:
The hero goes to the railway station to pick a friend who owns a car that Karthi and his friends drive. While waiting for his friend to arrive, Karthi sees the terribly tensed Tamannah with her uncle who mistake Karthi to be a cab driver and ask him to drop them at Chennai.
Accepting the travel, Karthi takes off in the black Mitsubishi Lancer along with his guests. When they pause for refueling, Tamannah asks Karthi to buzz off leaving her uncle behind. From here starts the real road trip of 'Paiyaa' with full throttle.
On their journey, they encounter people, new locations and the hero and heroine get along well. While this happens, Tamannah narrates her story and lets Karthi know that her Father is looking to marry her to someone she doesn’t like. So ‘Andhra’ villains (a dozen in number) chase Tamannah, on the instructions of their leader, a lady with a fiery voice (because we can’t really see her but just listen to her instructions on the mobile phone).
On Tamannah's request, Karthi sets off to Mumbai, and with a fight scene on their way, Karthi reveals his connection with Mumbai. Pit stop (Interval).
And soon appears the Flashback:
On a job search in the past, Karthi comes to Mumbai and circumstances lead him to the villain.
In comes, Milind Soman as 'Bali' who gets a wild introduction as one of Mumbai's powerful Don. But soon is punched a powerful blow on his stomach that he spits blood out. After all it’s the Hero who’s punching!
Here forms the plot, a Mumbai don behind Karthi and Andhra goondaas behind Tamannah, and how the lead pair comes out of their clutches is what forms the rest of the movie.
The team:
This movie is everything about the team, comprising of Mathi, the cinematographer, Anthony the editor, Yuvan Shankar Raja, the music director, Brinda Sarathy the dialogue writer, the Stunt Director Kanal Kannan, Art by Rajeevan.
Being a road movie, most of the action is in the car or rather on the road! Considering the hardships involved, the camera work is immaculate. The action scenes with cars all over, and car chases in the movie would have definitely been a toll on the director and the cinematographer. Editing the different versions of the camera, Anthony has done an incredible job. ‘Paiyaa’ definitely has got the best of Anthony out.
The car sequences on Indian Highways and the backdrops have been beautifully captured. Dialogues weaved in between are subtle and natural. Nothing too cinematic or too dramatic! Funny dialogue delivery of Karthi makes the audience laugh many a time.
Art work by Rajeevan is enduring and simply attractive. From the car seats to the sets of the song 'Suthude Suthude', the man has shown his tastes, given the limited scope for art in the ‘road movie’.
Karthi and Tamannah look fresh, in their attire as well as their looks. Priya Manikandan, the costume designer has seemingly done an impressive job.
What to look out for?
Director Lingusamy’s screen play starts off on a slower note but progresses steadily in to the fifth gear!
‘Paiyaa’ is an action adventure, and a movie of such a genre needs the best of action scenes. Kanal Kannan, has done a marvellous job. The actions scenes are simply amazing. Special effects in the actions scenes by Sethu receive special appreciation.
Besides this, the music! The greatest strength of the movie! Yuvan Shankar Raja has composed beautiful songs with ‘En Kadhal Solla’ receiving a loud applause. His background score as well as re-recording are excellent. The music behind the fight sequences gives the racy feel. Definitely the biggest plus-point in the movie! Apart from this, the sound engineers Guru et al, receive appreciation as well.
While the songs are pleasing to hear, the choreography makes it a pleasure to watch Karthi dance to the steps of dance masters – Raju Sundaram, Brinda and Sabina Khan.
‘Adada Mazhai’ choreographed by Raki also receives that special attention, while the pick of the lot is ‘Thuli Thuli’ choreographed by Brindha.
Lingusamy has brought out a classy entertainer. He takes you on a virtual journey from Bangalore to Mumbai. Those who love cars, fights, and of course romance, ‘Paiyaa’ is definitely an entertainer this summer. Rush to watch it in a cinema near you!

Lingusamy is a past master at packaged entertainment. His latest Paiyaa is a road movie laced with mass elements and extraordinary songs picturised in a stunning manner. Fasten your seat belts and enjoy the ride.
Credible performances from its lovable lead- Karthi and Tamannaah make up for the plot holes that threaten to eat into this otherwise engaging ride. Technically it is Lingusamy’s best work enriched by Mathi’s eye-catching camera work, Antony’s crisp editing, Rajeevan’s exotic set designs and above all Yuvan Shankar Raja’s foot tapping music.
Shiva (Karthi) is a young man who is on the lookout for a job and he comes to Bangalore for an interview with a bunch of friends. He sees the pretty Charulatha( Tamannaah) at the bus stop ( a la Run) and falls hook line sinker for her. And much to his surprise, his dream girl who is in some trouble, mistakes him for a driver and asks for a ride to Mumbai.
Now both the people are on a journey from Bangalore to Mumbai and the rest of the film is how they bond, face challenges, realizes that the journey was more beautiful than the destination and finally fall in love. The film is all about the hero meeting his dream girl and how his past catches up with him on this road trip.
Leading man Karthi’s first outing at attempting an action film is quite impressive with his macho looks. He competently delivers what's required of him in the action scenes, lending grace to his chop-socky moves, including stunning sequences in which he beats up dozens of goons single-handedly. Tamannaah is there from the beginning to the end and is gorgeous. Milind Soman as bad guy is wasted.
The songs of Yuvan Shankar Raja scorches just like the desert sun. The background score is perfect co-ordination with the narration. Yuvan’s music is the film’s trump card, with meaningful lyrics by Na. Muthukumar. All the five songs in the album are rocking, making it difficult to pick the best of the lot. We will say that Thuli, Thuli… and Adada Mazhada… are the more popular of the lot. Suthuthe Suthuthe… is a knockout, with terrific choreography by Sabeena Khan shot on a real beautiful set created by Rajeevan.
On the downside the film moves at a leisurely pace and the plot line is riddled with holes. In the second half especially when the couple reaches Mumbai the story plods along leading to a predictable climax. But if you are looking for just fun and entertainment Paiyaa is a jolly good ride.

Director Lingusamy traverses on an all new road show in Paiyaa in his home production Tirupathi Brothers and has acquitted himself fairly well. Although romance seems to be the axle in Paiyaa, Lingusamy has skewed away mildly from this and spiced it up with a travel (escape) event as a backdrop.
The film opens up with an ingenious manner of credits flipping on the road and dividers, lucidly indicating the genre of the film. A creative brainwave indeed!
Karthi (Shiva), an engineering graduate with an attitude, is on the look out for a job. He does not seem to be much serious in seeking employment while his friends try their best to settle him. He spots Tamannah (Charu) in a bus stop and it is love at first sight. He finds her on a couple of occasions later and in fact misses an interview in her pursuit. Destiny seems to have something good waiting for him and he gets to spend the

most beautiful phase of his life, giving her a ride in the car while waiting to pick the owner of the car at the railway station. Life takes an exciting turn from this point for Karthi who accepts to drop her in Mumbai and thus begins Paiyaa’s journey of romance, action and emotions on a highway with a few turns, some with caution and some without.
Paiyaa zooms forward in the first half where Karthi is at driver’s seat physically and metaphorically. An enjoyable performance from the young actor who appears to relish his role! For the first time in his career, he gets to cover himself with stylish costumes. He sparkles with haughty countenance, sideway glances, mischievous looks, ‘know it all’ attitude and an understated curiosity to know about Tamannah. He reiterates that he can essay any kind of role with aplomb. But there are still some vestiges of a villager in him which he needs to divest when necessary. Tamannah is fresh, youthful and emotes well too. Jagan has a small role in the second half. Karthi’s friends are adept in their performance. Except for looking hot and handsome, the much talked about Milind Soman is wasted and any one could have performed his role.
Yuvan Shankar Raja is the major backbone of Paiyaa with lovely tracks suiting the mood of the film. Tamannah looks as fresh as the raindrops in thuli thuli mazhayai number. Suthude suthude boomi speaks of art director Rajeevan’s work but he could have taken extra care especially about the stationery cloud hovering around the moon. The songs are all chartbusters and have all been picturized very aesthetically. Priya Manikandan’s costumes are in sync with the nature of characters and the mood of the film. Brinda Sarathy’s dialogues evoke laughter at the right places.
The second half slackens with some of the actions sequences appear contrived especially in the climax. How can someone even lift his head when beaten by a powerful metal rod? It is difficult to comprehend despite attributing it to cinematic liberties. The climax fights intend to be more for showcasing Karthi’s heroism than for the story warranting it. And why is Karthi shown as someone who does not speak English despite being a city bred engineer with urban friends for company?
Director Lingusamy has stuck to the genre that he has chosen for most part. He has recorded romance in a beautiful manner especially when Karthi communicates his feelings to his friends seeking advice and his dignified attitude towards Tamannah. The car chasing sequence in the open field is absolutely brilliant and so is Karthi going reverse in the opposite direction. Cinematographer Madhie needs plaudits here. Crisp editing by Anthony especially in the action sequences is a major plus point of Paiyaa and deserves a special mention.
All in all, a stylish, light hearted family entertainer for the summer!
Verdict: Pacy road show with a few humps on a straight run

Clean entertainer. First half is really cool with feel-good romance Second half abides by the rules of TFI. Slightly boring when compared to first half.
Nothing new. Nothing ground breaking. Run story thaan. But certainly worth watching!

Comedy portions were fondly missed. Run was bearable inspite of Meera Jaasmini because of Vivek. idhulayum yaarachum irundhirukanum Nandu was ok, but he doesn't even come foe like 15 minutes of the film.
Cinematography was usual, but well done. Music, sollave thevayilla.. sema gethu. BGM was okay. Climax twist ellam sema aruvai. idhukka indha akkaporu range feelings aayiruchu. Milind Soman looked like a Greek God. Wasted!
Stunt choreographer must be dropped in Antartica and must be left alone for life. idhaiyellam neenga monitor-la paarkave matengalada?!

வேலையில்லாத கார்த்தி வேலை தேடி பெங்களூர் போகிறார். தமன்னாவைப் பார்க்கிறார். காதலாகிறார். வந்த வேலையை விட்டுவிட்டு தமன்னாவைத் தேடிப்போவதில் நேரத்தைக் கழிக்கிறார். தன்னை மும்பை வரை கொண்டு வந்துவிட முடியுமா என தமன்னா இவரிடம் உதவி கேட்கிறார். அதைவிட வேறு வேலை இல்லாத ஹீரோ உடனே ஒப்புக் கொள்ள, இந்தப் பயணத்தின்போது ஹீரோயினை ஒரு கும்பலும் ஹீரோவை ஒரு கும்பலும் துரத்த, அவர்களிடமிருந்து எப்படி மீள்கிறார்கள் என்று போகிறது கதை...
நல்ல வேளை... யுவன் சங்கர் ராஜா இருந்ததால் தப்பித்தோம். அவர்தான் படத்தின் அட்டகாசமான ஹீரோ. இத்தனை நாள் எங்கே வைத்திருந்தார் இந்த துள்ளல் இசையை! ஐந்து அருமையான பாடல்கள், விறுவிறு பின்னணி இசை என பின்னியிருக்கிறார்.
திரைக்கதையில் கொஞ்சமாவது புதுசாகத் தந்திருந்தால், இந்தப் படத்தின் ரேஞ்சே வேறு மாதிரி இருந்திருக்கும். மீண்டும் மீண்டும் தனது பழைய படங்களின் காட்சிகளையே உல்டா பண்ணி கடுப்பேற்றியிருக்கிறார் லிங்கு.
கார்த்திக்கு வயதுக்கேற்ற வேடம். அவரும் இயல்பாக நடிக்க முயன்றாலும், இன்னும் அந்த பருத்திவீரனை அவருக்குள்ளிருந்து விரட்ட முடியாதது தெரிகிறது.
நண்பர்களிடம் தன் காதலை அவர் ஃபீல் பண்ணும் இடங்கள் நன்றாக உள்ளன.
ஏதோ ஆளை அடித்துப் போடும் மிஷின் மாதிரி எத்தனைப் பேர் வந்தாலும் அடித்துத் துவைக்கிறார். இதெல்லாம் உங்களுக்கே ஓவராத் தெரியலையா... கொஞ்சமாவது நம்புகிற மாதிரி ஆக்ஷன் காட்சிகளை வைக்க வேண்டாமா... அதுவும் இரண்டே படம் முடித்த கார்த்திக்கு இதெல்லாம் ரொம்ப அதிகம். அடுத்த படத்தில் தனி ஆளா ஒரு நாட்டுக்கெதிராகவே சண்டை போடுவார் போல!
ஆக்ஷன் ஹீரோவுக்கு ஒரு அழகான துணை வேணும்... (நடிக்க வேண்டிய அவசியமெல்லாம் இல்லை) இப்போதைய சென்சேஷன் தமன்னா அந்த வேலையை குறைவின்றி செய்துள்ளார்.
சோதா வில்லனாக மிலிந்த் சோமன். எந்த அளவு சோதா தெரியுமா... தான் தேடிக் கொண்டிருக்கிற கார்த்தி கண்ணெதிரே போகிறார், ஒரு குடையால் முகம் மறைத்தபடி. அட, அவரை அடையாளமே தெரியாமல் போகிறது வில்லனுக்கு. ஒரு சின்ன மருவை வைத்துக் கொண்டு கெட்டப் மாற்றிவிட்டதாகக் காட்டும் 'தமிழ்ப் பட நக்கலு'க்கு குறைவில்லாத காட்சி!
நண்டுவாக வருபவர் ஈர்க்கிறார்.
மதியின் ஒளிப்பதிவு படத்தோடு ஓடிக் கொண்டே இருக்கிறது. ஆன்டனியின் எடிட்டிங் ஒரளவு காட்சிகளை விறுவிறுப்பாக்க உதவுகிறது. ஆனால் இவர்களெல்லாம் சைட் டிஷ்தான். மெயின் அயிட்டம் சொல்லிக் கொள்கிற மாதிரி இல்லையே!

The movie is very real. I could relate almost 90% of the movie happening to my real life Hence the movie is very good.
Never Seen such a love story before This movie shd set an example of how love stories shd be made in the future.
Songs and the 3 fights helps the movie in narration very well and the director did not compromise any thing for the commercial success.
Fantastic movie.

Somebody should ban idiotic fight sequences in tamil movies
Movie is just very average and with the help of songs, some other pluses it scores a just pass mark. The movie can not become super hit may be a hit / average. Lingusamy innoru padam ippadi eduthal oothikkidum and so to hero Karthi.
"Thuli thuli" on screen is very enjoyable. Suthuthey is good to watch also. "En Kadhal solla" Rock while other songs are sand. BGM not that much impressive.
In today's isaiyaruvi special programme Karthi said twice "my dad said this is your second film after paruthi veeran". Selvaragan paartha enna Ninaippar.

PAIYYA....
the film opens up by displaying the care free attitude of the hero(karthi)...then the intro of tammanna...then the journey starts..from bangalore to mumbai...actually the story line is very thin,screenplay is very important in these kind of films and lingusamy has done a decent job in engaging the viewers.you wil see the long hair gundas in qualis everywhere in the film(typical lingusamy)..the love portions,interactions between karthi and tammanna,small small incidences happen while they r travelling like a guy putting kadalai to tammanna etc r all gud in the film....but the minus point is the action part of it...which forces its way into the script..milind soman is completely useless in the film..he comes up with the cliched dialouges"u no who i am" but in hindi...as if he is born to get the beating from karthi...
karthi has done a neat job as the city boy..it takes a bit of time to change ur mindset that he is not a rouge..but does an effortless job..be it the witty comedy scenes,feeling for the girl,and the action part...he has done a gud job...really has the potential to bcum a huge star,then tammanna..1st time got an oppurtunity to perform ahs done well...looks refreshing,jagan provides the comic relief,and the suave milind soman who makes a gr8 entry dissapoints as the old,tired villain.....now the major plus of the film..YUVAN SHANKAR RAJA..after a long time all songs have clicked..also beatifully picturised..the bgm is also rocking..karthi bashing up milind's men and casually walking(bgm just rocks) ...chumma adhurudhu...
payya is a gud and enjoyable movie provided you have to tolerate dump gundas getting smashed like tomatoes by karthi...
if you aks me...watch payya for yuvan's music..surely...and karthi's screen presence..it wil b entertainig ride indeed

Declared already as a hit, collection reports of Lingusamy's 'Paiyaa' suggest the film is all set to become a blockbuster. Ever since the Karthi-Tamannah starrer hit screens Friday last, it has been running packed houses all over Tamil Nadu, theatre sources say.
Rave reviews from the media and aggressive marketing strategies by Dhayanidhi Alagiri, who had acquired the release rights, have been drawing crowds to cinema halls screening 'Paiyaa', we learn.
"Expectations of those who come to theatres are thoroughly fulfilled by Lingusamy and his team. Most of the scenes are received by the audience with huge applause," say sources.
"Music by Yuvan Shankar Raja is no doubt an asset to the film," they say and add: "Youngsters are seen dancing for most of the numbers with Adadada Mazhada topping the list."
On performance by the lead actors, sources say, "Karthi's aggressive acting and cool looks have won the appreciation of many while Tamannah steals the show with her stunning looks and expressions. The chemistry they share on screen is great."

The film is a mass entertainer. Director Lingusamy has made it extremely racy and fun to watch. (Smiles) For Paruthiveeran, Priya and I worked for months together and we bonded well. Reemma became a close friend during the making of Aayirathil Oruvan and still remains a dear friend. All these rumours of my link-up with Tamannaah started because we have signed our second film together. I take these in my stride as link-ups and break-ups are a part and parcel of the rumour mills attached to showbiz.
What next?
My next release is Naan Mahan Alla, directed by Susindran. The film is almost 75 per cent complete. Believe it or not, I once again play an unemployed youth! The film is all about the bonding between a father and son and a twist that takes place, making it a crime thriller. Kajal Aggarwal plays my love interest in the film. I’m also shooting for the Tamil remake of Vikramakurdu with Tamannaah.

Karthi’s forthcoming film has been released in Tamil as ‘Paiyya’ and had created a record of sorts by collecting 12 crores in the first three days. Tamannah is starring opposite Karthi in this film and Pandemkodi fame Lingusamy directed the film. KE Gnyanavel produced the film on Studiogreen Banner.
Buoyed by the success in Tamil, producer Gnyanvel is planning to release the film in Telugu in the second half of April.
Talking about the film, hero Karthi said, “Lingusamy has come up with excellent characterization in Awara. Like my earlier film ‘Yuganiki Okkadu’, Awara also will enthrall Telugu audience.”
Tamannah says, “Awara is the film which I liked most after Happydays. It’s great working with Karthi and I am confident that this film will become a huge hit in Telugu as in Tamil.”
Besides to Karthi and Tamannah, stars like Milind Soman and Sonia also appear in the movie. Yuvan Shankar Raja composed the music. Vennelakanti penned Telugu dialogues.

I think this was done deliberately LS keep changing some nice trendy clothes and told Karthi not to get disappointed while Karthi wasn't enna PV, AO costume appadi with the same costume. Trousera kalattave illaiyaam this was said in another interview.

Yup. En kadhal solla has been picturized really well. I liked it! The best parts are when Tamannah enacts a drama in first stanza!

தமன்னா மீது கண்டதும் காதல் கார்த்திக்கு. ஒரு திடீர்சந்தர்ப்பத்தில் தமன்னாவைபெங்களூரில் இருந்து மும்பைக்கு காரில் அழைத்துச் செல்கிறார் கார்த்தி. பயணத்தின்போது இருவரையும் துரத்துகின்றன பிரச்னைகள். தமன்னாவுக்கு கார்த்தி மீது காதல் பூத்ததா, பிரச்னைகள் தீர்ந்ததா என்பது க்ளைமாக்ஸ்.
'காதல்கொண்ட பெண் அருகில் இருக்க, மிக நீண்ட பயணம்' என ஒரு கவிதை வரிக் கதை. திரைக்கதையில் தனது வழக்கமான ஆக்ஷன் கியரை அழுத்தியிருக்கிறார் இயக்குநர் லிங்குசாமி.
அழுக்கு கார்த்தி, இதில் அழகு. ஆனால், தலையைச் சாய்த்துக் கண்களை உருட்டியபடி, கோணல் புன்னகையுடன் இன்னமும் 'பருத்திவீரன்' இருப்பது நல்லதில்லை.
மழை நடனங்களின்போது தமன்னாவுக்கு தம்ஸ் அப். பொண்ணு செம ரவுண்டு வரும்ப்பா. மற்ற நேரங்களில் கார்த்தியின் காதலை உணர்ந்துகொள்ளாமல் உலாத்துகிறார்.
ஒற்றை வரியில் ஈர்க்கும் கதை, இருவர் மட்டுமே பயணிக்கும் காட்சிகளால், திரைக்கதை டாப் கியர் தட்டத் திணறுகிறது. லிஃப்ட் கேட்டு ஏறி தமன்னாவை பிக்கப் பண்ண முயற்சிக்கும் சாஃப்ட்வேர் ஆசாமியின் அலம்பல்கள், தமன்னா ஸ்டீயரிங் பிடித்திருக்கும்போது கட்டுப்பாடு இழக்கும் கார் என ஆங்காங்கே கண் சிமிட்டுகின்றன சின்னச் சின்ன சுவாரஸ்யங்கள்.
மும்பை நண்பனாக மைக்ரோ வாய்ப்புகளிலும் ஸ்கோர் செய்யும் நண்டு ஜெகனை இரண்டொரு காட்சிகளோடு காணாமல் அடித்துவிடுகிறார்கள். பார்வை, உடல் மொழிகளிலேயே மிரட்டல் மும்பை தாதாவாக ஏகப்பட்ட பில்ட்-அப்களுடன் களமிறங்கும் மிலிந்த் சோமன், கார்த்தியின் முதல் உதையிலேயே ப்ளக் என ரத்தம் துப்பும் காட்சி... அடடா!
யுவன்ஷங்கர் ராஜாவின் இசையும் மதியின் ஒளிப்பதிவும்தான் பயணத்தின் பசுமை வழி ஜன்னல்கள். 'என் காதல் சொல்ல வார்த்தையில்லை', 'அடடா மழடா அடை மழடா' என்று நா.முத்துக்குமாரின் கும்மாள வரிகளுக்குக் குதியாட்டம் போடத் தூண்டுகிறது இசை. 'சுத்துதே சுத்துதே பூமி' பாடலில் அருவி, மலையுச்சி, நள்ளிரவுக் காடு என களை சேர்க்கிறது ராஜீவனின் கலை. பெங்களூரு - மும்பை வரையிலான பயணத்தின் வேகம் பரபரக்கிறது. ஆனால், எத்தனை ரசனையான இடங்களைக் காட்டக்கூடிய வாய்ப்பு. மிஸ் பண்ணிட்டீங்களே!

ஆனால், இரண்டு கோஷ்டிகளும் ரெண்டு ரீலுக்கு ஒரு முறை கார்த்தியிடம் உதை வாங்குவதைத் தவிர உருப்படியாக ஒன்றும் செய்யவில்லை. கார்த்தியின் காதலை இறுதி வரை உணரவில்லை தமன்னா. ஆனால், இறுதியில் அனாதரவாக நிற்கும் அவர், கார்த்தியைக் காதல்கொண்டு பார்க்கும் போது... பாவம் காதல்!
காதலுக்கான அழுத்தம், சேஸிங் த்ரில் என இரண்டுமே பையப் பையப் பயணிப் பதால், இந்தப் பயணத்தில் அலுப்பும் அதிகம்!

ஒரு சினிமாவின் வெற்றியை எதை வைத்துக் கணிக்கிறார்கள் சினிமாக்காரர்கள்?
பொதுவாக வசூல்.. சில அரிதான சந்தர்ப்பங்களில் படத்தின் தரத்தை வைத்து.
சரி.. வசூல் என்றால்… அது எத்தனை நாளில் தெரியும்?
பொதுவாக முதல் ஒரு வாரம் முடிந்து தியேட்டர் கலெக்ஷன் ரிப்போர்ட் என்ற ஒன்றை விநியோகஸ்தர்களுக்கு தருவார்கள் தியேட்டர்காரர்கள். அதில் தெரிந்துவிடும். படத்தின் தரம் விமர்சனங்களில் தெரிந்துவிடும்.
ஆனால் இது இரண்டுமே இல்லாத பல படங்கள், இன்று வெற்றி விழா கொண்டாடுகின்றன. அதுவும் எப்படி… படம் வெளியான நான்கே நாட்களில்.
அப்படி வெற்றிவிழா கொண்டாடப்பட்ட சமீபத்திய படம், பையா!
இந்தப் படம் கடந்த வெள்ளிக்கிழமை வெளியானது. நான்கே நாள்கள்தான் முடிந்துள்ளன. இன்று 5 வது நாள். இன்னும் அச்சு ஊடகங்களில் பெரும்பாலானவை விமர்சனமே வெளியிடவில்லை.
ஆனால் வெற்றிவிழா கொண்டாடுகிறார்கள் படத்தின் ஹீரோ கார்த்தியும் இயக்குநர் லிங்குசாமியும்!
ரெஸிடென்ஸி டவர்ஸ் ஓட்டலில் பத்திரிகையாளர்களை அழைத்து, பையாவின் மீதி ரீல்களை காதில் சுற்றி அனுப்பியுள்ளனர், படம் மகத்தான வெற்றி என்று.
சரி… உண்மையில் நிலவரம் என்ன?
சென்னையில் சத்யம் திரையரங்கின் செவ்வாய்க்கிழமை அனைத்து ஷோக்களுக்கும் டிக்கெட்டுகள் மிக சுலபமாகக் கிடைத்தன. எந்த ஷோவும் ஹவுஸ்ஃபுல் இல்லை. நாளையும் நாளை மறுநாளும் அனைத்து ஷோக்களுக்கும் வேண்டிய மட்டும் டிக்கெட் உள்ளன… சத்யம் சினிமாஸ் இணையதளம் தரும் தகவல் இது!
சங்கம் திரையரங்கில் எப்போது போனாலும் டிக்கெட் வாங்கிக் கொள்ளலாம் என்ற அளவுக்கு குறைவான கூட்டம். அதற்கு இணையதளத்தைக் கூட சோதிக்கத் தேவையில்லை. ஒரு நடை போனால் ஒரு கத்தை டிக்கெட்டோடு திரும்பலாம். சங்கம் திரையரங்க மேலாளர் சொல்லும் தகவல் இது!
நகருக்குள் இந்த நிலை என்றால் காசி போன்ற திரையரங்குகள் காத்தாடுகின்றன.
மடிப்பாக்கம் போன்ற புற நகர் பகுதிகளில் இந்த வாரத்துடன் படம் கடைசி. வெள்ளிக் கிழமை வேறு படம்!
‘கவுண்டர்’ அடிக்கடி சொல்வது போல, ‘எதுக்கு இந்த வெளம்பரம்ம்?’ அல்லது யாரை திருப்திப்படுத்த இதையெல்லாம் செய்கிறார்கள்?
சிலர் கமலாவிலும் கோபிகிருஷ்ணாவிலும் பணம் கட்டி படத்தை 50 நாள்கள், 100 நாள்கள் என போஸ்டர் ஒட்டிக் கொள்வதற்கும், இந்த வெற்றி ப்ரஸ் மீட்டுகளுக்கும் என்ன வித்தியாசம்?
தங்கள் தவறுகளை உணர்ந்து, அடுத்த முறை சரியான ஸ்கிரிப்டோடு களமிறங்குவதுதான் புத்திசாலித்தனமே தவிர, சினிமாவுக்கு செட் போடுவதுமாதிரி தினம் ஒரு பொய்யைச் சொல்லி மட்டமான பப்ளிசிட்டி தேடுவதல்ல என்பதை விங்குசாமிகளும் கார்த்திகளும் எப்போது உணர்வார்களோ!

We've watched on-screen yarns based on cab and bus tours, and stories unfolding during train journeys, but tracking the car of a lead pair and travelling with them through their stunt-laden experiences, from the beginning to the end, is new. Also, a saga of love with the heroine seated in the back seat the whole time, is a novelty.
The story per se is one that you've watched often — it is the route the tale takes that makes Paiyya (U) interesting. Certain sequences remind you of Lingusamy's phenomenal hit, Run. The formula is the same. But, the racy treatment and deft editing (Antony) keep you rooted. Director Lingusamy should be happy about his Paiyya, a feel-good romance all the way.
Smitten by Charu's (Tamannaah) beauty from the moment he sets eyes on her, Shiva (Karthi) goes around a like a zombie and gives his job interview the go by, but unfazed, continues to follow his heart. When still in a trance, he gets an opportunity to take the very girl he pines for, from Bengaluru to Mumbai in his car. What more can he ask for?
It is Karthi's third film, and though he plays a city-bred this time, he's adamant about not sporting a clean-shaven look. So, you get to see a very refined yet slightly rugged-looking Karthi in Paiyya. Performance is a cakewalk for the young man, though the lover boy demeanour doesn't appear to be his line always (or, probably because of the rough roles in his earlier films, you tend to think so). In stunts, he is fiery, in expressions appealing, but in footwork, you notice room for improvement.
Tamannaah may not be sound in her knowledge of the language, but her apt expressions more than compensate for the slightly faulty lip sync in a few places. Looking frail and vulnerable, this Charu is a treat to watch! Milind Soman plays the typical don and makes you wonder why actors of calibre should go in for run-of-the-mill villain roles!
Umar, whom you still remember for his natural acting in a naïve role in his debut, Poi Solla Porom, and his friends Siddharth and Ashish, add spice to the otherwise usual parts. And, Sonia Deepti, the only girl in the group, stands out for her spontaneous portrayal. Comedian Jagan looks more like Vadivelu, as he was in his initial stages.
Each of Yuvan's numbers is a foot-tapping piece that sounds very different from one another — probably that's his USP. And, any day, Yuvan the composer is way ahead of Yuvan the singer. The talented twosome of Rajeevan (art) and Madhie (camera) lend much lustre to Paiyya — Rajeevan's sets spell authenticity and aesthetics, while Madhie's lighting adds to the lure. And pithy, profound phrases are a highlight of Brindasarathy's dialogue.
Paiyya is neat, decent and, most importantly, watchable.

Watched the movie yesterday at PVR. It was a houseful show and the response was gr8 for Thuli Thuli, Adada and En Kaadhal Solla songs. 90% of the crowd were family audience and they enjoyed the movie.
On the movie: The first half of the movie was really good. It promised to be a clean entertainer. The Lingu touch comprising of twists and turns coated with breezy romance went well with me. The buildup to the action block was superb. But things failed when the villain was unveiled. yet another time, Lingu gives the max buildup to the villain and then gets him beaten up by the hero in the half way stage. From there the movie falls down and drags. Music and Cinematography being the saving grace.
On the artistes:Karthi is reasonably good and I am happy with the way he is shaping up. He does not have the 'Plastic acting' which the other members of his family possess. Although there are glimpses of Paruthiveeran and AO, he looks good. Thamanna is a rage and her acting skills have picked up. Her good old Kedi days are gone and she is here to stay. Her dance in 'Adada' song is a treat to watch. Milind Soman is wasted and doesn't even have the scope thea Atul Kulkarni had in Run or even what he himself had in Pachaikili Muthucharam.
On the technicians:Its Yuvan who forms the integral part of the movie. Be the songs or BGM, he has done a commendable job and he solely lifts the dragging second half of the movie. After the YSR-Selva breakup, I believe this is one combo to look out for.
Mathi, the cinematographer plays the supporting hand to Yuvan. Songs and action sequences are well picturised.
On the whole, even if this movie is not a must watch, it is a clean entertainer in the lines of Ghilli, Run and Sandakozhi which has its moments.

Theatre is good, Venki. This was my third movie in PVR Chennai after VTV and Green Zone. The seating capacity is as follows..Audi1-147, Audi2-210, Audi3-539, Audi4-267, Audi5-270, Audi6-214 & Audi7-147 = TOTAL 1794. Sound is Gr8. The projection system is much superior to Sathyam and Inox.

பார்த்தவுடன் காதல் வயப்படும் நாயகனுக்கு அந்த பெண்ணோடு பயணம் [நீண்ட?] செய்யும் வாய்ப்பு. பிரச்சனையோடு பயணம் செய்யும் பெண்ணுக்கு உதவப் போகும் நாயகனுக்கும் ஒரு பிரச்சனை இருந்தால் எப்படி இருக்கும் என்ற கோணத்தில் சொல்லப்பட்ட கதை. நாயகனுக்கு என்ன பிரச்சனை வைக்கலாம் என்பதை ரிவர்சில் யோசித்திருப்பார் போலும். காரணம் மிலிந்த் சோமனுக்கும் கார்த்திக்கும் ஏற்படும் மோதல் வெகு செயற்கை.
Road moovie என்பது இப்போது அடிக்கடி பயன்படுத்தப்படும் சொற்றொடர். அதற்கேற்றாற்போல் ஒரு படம் என்று சொல்லலாம். இப்படிப்பட்ட ஒரு கதைக்களத்தை தேர்ந்தெடுக்கும் போது ஒரே மாதிரியான காட்சியமைப்புகள் வருவது தவிர்க்க முடியாதது. உதாரணமாக ஒவ்வொரு முறையும் கார்த்தியும் தமன்னாவும் அங்கே பாருங்க என்று சொல்லும்போது ஏற்படும் உணர்வு. அதையும் மீறி சுவாரஸ்யம் ஏற்படுத்த முயற்சி செய்து அதில் பல இடங்களில் வெற்றியும் பெற்றிருக்கிறார் லிங்குசாமி.
படித்துவிட்டு வேலை இல்லாமல் ஆனால் கூடப் படித்த வேலைப் பார்க்கும் நண்பர்களின் கூட தங்கியிருந்து வேலை தேடும் ஒரு இளைஞனின் வாழ்க்கை என்பது நாம் அன்றாடம் சந்திக்கும் பலரை நினைவுப்படுத்துவதில் இருந்து அவர்களுக்குள் இருக்கும் நட்பை இயல்பாக சொல்லியிருப்பது வரை [என் அக்கவுண்ட்டில் பணம் போட்ரு] சுவை. தன்னுடன் வரும் பெண்ணிடம் சாப்ட்வேர் பீட்டர் பார்ட்டி கடலை போடும் போது சாதாரண ஹீரோ ரீயாக்ட் செய்வது போல் செய்யாமல் [அதாவது தானும் ஒரு EC பட்டதாரி என்று வெளிப்படுத்தாமல்] இருப்பது போன்ற இடங்களில் லாஜிக்கோடு செயல்பட்டிருக்கும் இயக்குனர் சண்டைக்காட்சிகளில் அதை மொத்தமாக மூட்டை கட்டி வைத்திருக்கிறார்.
கார்த்தி - தமிழ் சினிமாவின் சராசரி நாயகர்களை விட சற்று உயரம். screen presence இருக்கிறது. தன்னுடைய உணர்வுகளை யாரிடமாவது பகிர்ந்து கொள்ள வேண்டும் என்ற உந்துதலில் நண்பர்களை போனில் கூப்பிட்டு பேசும் போதும் அவளுக்கு லவ் இருக்கப் போகுது என்று நண்பன் சொல்ல ஒருத்தன் சந்தோஷமா இருந்தா உங்களுக்கு பிடிக்காதடா என்று காற்று இறங்குவது, ரேடியோவில் கேட்கும் [தன் அப்பாவின்] பாடலை ஜாலியாக [என் கண்மணி உன் காதலி] சேர்ந்து பாடுவது, நாந்தான் அடிச்சேன் என்று சாதாரணமாக சொல்வது, பெங்களூரிலிருந்து மூணு நாள் travel பண்ணேன் ஒண்ணுமே தெரியலே, ஆனா இப்ப அவளை வீட்டிலே விட்டுட்டு ரோடு-க்கு வந்திருக்கிறேன், கண்ணெல்லாம் கலங்குது-னு இடறுவது இவை எல்லாம் கார்த்தி கவனம் ஈர்க்கும் இடங்கள். ஆனால் எல்லா சண்டைக் காட்சிகளிலும் ஒரே மாதிரி தலையை திருப்பி ஒரே மாதிரி பார்வை பார்ப்பது போன்ற இடங்களில் இயல்பு தொலைந்து செயற்கை. ஒரு வேலை நாளின் மாலைக் காட்சியில் ஹீரோ அறிமுகத்திற்கு விசிலும் கைதட்டலும் இருக்கிறது என்பதிலிருந்து கார்த்திக்கு ஒரு ரசிகர் கூட்டம் உருவாகியிருப்பது தெரிகிறது.
நிறைய மாதுரி தீக்ஷித்தின் சாயல் தெரியும் தமன்னா பார்க்க வெள்ளை வெளேர் என்று இருக்கிறார். நடிப்பில் வெகு தூரம் போக வேண்டும். நகைச்சுவை தனியாக இல்லாமல் சேர்ந்தே வருகிறது. வண்டியிலே கோடு போட்டுட்டான்.ஆனா எனக்கு கோபமே வரலை என்று போனில் சொல்லும் கார்த்தியிடம் உனக்கு எப்படிடா வரும் கார் என்னோடுதிலே என்று சொல்லும் நண்பன், பெண்ணை வளைக்க வழிலே ரூம் போடு என்று ஐடியா கொடுக்கும் நண்பனை தூ என்று போனிலேயே கார்த்தி துப்ப, சமாளிக்க நினைக்கும் நண்பன் சூப்பர்-னு சொன்னான் என்று சொல்ல, மூஞ்சியை துடைச்சுக்கோ சாரல் இங்கே அடிக்குது-னு சொல்லும் தோழி, பாம்பேயில் தனக்கு வீடு இல்லை என்று சொல்லும் நண்பனின் [ஜெகன்?] குட்டு, water can பையனால் உடைந்து விட தமன்னாவிடம் இந்தி தெரியுமா என்று கேட்க அது மராத்தி என்று அவர் சொல்ல எல்லா சானலும் பாப்பாங்க போலிருக்கு என்று கமண்ட் அடிக்கும் போது - புன்னகை பூக்கும் இடங்கள்.
பாடல்கள் மிக பிரபலம் என்பது படம் பார்க்கும் ஆடியன்சின் வரவேற்பு மூலம் தெரிகிறது. அது மட்டுமல்ல படத்திற்கு நிறைய repeat audience என்பதும் புரிந்தது.
ஓஹோ என்று சொல்ல முடியாது. ஆனால் ஒன்றுமேயில்லை என்றும் தள்ளி விட முடியாது.

Storyline: Shiva gets a chance to drive down to Mumbai with the very girl he had flipped for a couple of days earlier .
Bottomline: A feel good romance peppered with action
We've watched on-screen yarns based on cab and bus tours, and stories unfolding during train journeys, but tracking the car of a lead pair and travelling with them through their stunt- laden experiences, from the beginning to the end, is new. Also a saga of love with the heroine seated in the back seat the whole time, is a novelty.
The story per se is one that you've watched often – it is the route the tale takes that makes ‘Paiyya' (U) interesting. Certain sequences remind you of Lingusamy's phenomenal hit, ‘Run.' The formula is the same. But the racy treatment and deft editing (Antony) keep you rooted. Director Lingusamy should be happy about his ‘Paiyya,' a feel-good romance all the way.
Smitten by Charu's (Tamannaah) beauty from the moment he sets eyes on her, Shiva (Karthi) goes around a like a zombie, gives his interview the go by and hence loses his chance of securing the job, but unfazed, continues to follow his heart. When still in a trance, he gets an opportunity to take the very girl whom he pines for, from Bengaluru to Mumbai in his car. What more can he ask for?
It is Karthi's third film, though a city bred this time, he's adamant about not sporting a clean-shaven look. So you get to see a very refined yet slightly rugged-looking Karthi in ‘Paiyya.' Performance is a cakewalk for the young man, though the lover boy demeanour doesn't appear to be his line always. (or probably because of the rough roles in his two earlier films you tend to think so.) In stunts he is fiery, in expressions he's appealing, but in footwork you notice room for improvement.
Tamannaah may not be sound in her knowledge of the language but her apt expressions more than compensate for the slightly faulty lip sync in a few places. Looking frail and vulnerable, this Charu is a treat to watch! Milind Soman plays the typical don and makes you wonder why actors of calibre should go in for run-of-the- mill villain roles!
A laudable crew
Umar, whom you still remember for his natural acting in a naïve role in his debut, ‘Poi Solla Porom,' and his friends Siddharth and Ashish, add spice to the otherwise usual parts. And Sonia Deepti, the only girl in the group, stands out for her spontaneous portrayal. Comedian Jagan looks more like Vadivelu, as he was in his initial stages.
Each of Yuvan's number is a foot-tapping piece that sounds very different from one another -- probably that's his USP. And any day Yuvan, the composer is way ahead of Yuvan, the singer. The talented twosome of Rajeevan (art) and Madhie (camera) lend much lustre to ‘Paiyya' – Rajeevan's sets spell authenticity and aesthetics, while Madhie's lighting adds to the lure. And pithy, profound phrases are a highlight of Brindasarathy's dialogue.
‘Paiyya' is neat, decent and most importantly, watchable.

Lingusamy is a very happy man. His Thirrupathi Brothers produced Paiyaa, marketed by Cloud Nine and featuring Karthi and Tamannaah is turning out to be a super hit. The film is summer’s first big hit and is number one choice of family audiences across Tamil Nadu.
Says Lingusamy: “ Paiyaa is already a super hit, people are simply loving the movie. It has netted an awesome Rs 20 Crore from nearly 300 screens in Tamil Nadu in the first two weeks, which the trade feels is fantastic by any yardstick.”

The director of Paiyaa, Lingusamy is basking in glory over the astounding success of the film. The proud director says that he expected 100 percent success but he was baffled by the 200 percent success!
Lingusamy says that he wanted to make a film that will bring the audiences that liked Run and Anandam, though both these films belonged to different genres. And the outcome is Paiyaa for all to see.
It is interesting to note that Paiyaa’s collection will surpass that of Sivaji, Dasavatharam and Vettaikaran in different capacities.
According to the director, the audiences were eager to see a decent and stylish film in theatres rather than dirt and filth. This is the reason Paiyaa was made, he adds.

‘Paiyaa’ is setting new records at the box office within two weeks of its release. The Lingusamy film is shattering all previous records and trade says the film is on its way to become one of the biggest hits ever in Tamil cinema.
Reports say ‘Paiyaa’ has breached the 20 crores mark at the box office and this feat is unchallenged. In recent memory only ‘Sivaji’ and ‘Dasavatharam’ have been able to elicit this kind of response within a few days of release.
A beaming Lingusamy dedicates the record breaking success of ‘Paiyaa’ to the quality conscious Tamil audience. In his statement Lingusamy has said "I expected 100 per cent success for the film. But I have got 200 per cent success”.
‘Paiyaa’ is running at 15 theatres in Chennai out of which 5 are in Mount Road itself. The film which hit the theatres with 500 prints is expected to generate more. Prarthana Drive In theatre in ECR has screened 45 shows and over the weekends it runs 30 shows.

Watched this movie - though there're a lot of nonsensical moments (i.e. fights), overall not boring
The lead pair is nice, smart hero / beautiful heroine.

ovvoru songkkum claps, brilliant atmosphere in the theatre which made me go again, but the second time the crowd was more of a family n serious crowd i guess, but nonetheless enjoyed it on second watch too! and surprisingly, tamanna got more claps n whistles whenever she appeared on screen than karthi! the funniest point was when one guy screamed out "tammuuuuuuuuu" during a song sequence n from some other corner a girl screamed "kaaaaaaaaarthiiiiiiii", some other guy replied "naan inge irukken, dho vandhutten" dont know whether he located her! :P

Hub was on his feet even before the movie was launched.. I know there are fans of YSR and Tammanna here... but with the direction of Linguswamy, I had my doubts right from the word go..
Karthi was OK and he had nothing much to do except for a usual Linguswamy element of song, fight and one punch on villain's stomach (Milind Somand should be like "kutha sonnaa ulla irukira urine tank-a yaen odaikirae")
Tamanna - hilarious while exposing ellam illavae illae .. adhaiellam oru kalai kannoda paakkanum .. mathpaadi there is nothing that she can do in this film except to sit in the rear passenger seat and watch Kartih driving..
Linguswamy - aiyaa saamy.. Tirupathy brothers nu paera vecchitu ippadi oru padam edukkardhuku oru dhairiyam venum.. Tirupathy is famous for two things - mottai and hundial ! This movie might have been a hundial for you thanks to our audience and if this is the formula for the next movie as well, I already see "mottai" ..

but Karthi is genuine talent (or atleast screen presence).. Impact that he made in Paruthiveeran will stand for another couple of years and he will be welcomed with red carpet for any movies in the near future.. Remember, when Vijay’s ‘Pokkiri’ was released, the theatres were house-packed for the first 25 days, setting a great record at box office. In all likelihood, Karthi’s recent release ‘Paiyya’ is all set to bringing home the bacon with the similar style. The film was released during first week of April that was followed by summer vacations. Doubtlessly, the film is turning to be a top-drawer across all the centres.
The producers have openly admitted the report with the centres of release across the City, NSC and overseas areas, where the shows are houseful.

Lingusamy has struck gold with his Paiyaa. The film is turning out to be a mega hit worldwide, and is doing fantastic business in the state. In an exclusive interview with CT, a beaming Lingusamy says, “Paiyaa has netted Rs 22 crore within two weeks of its release, which by any yardstick is fantastic. The trade has confirmed that it has broken the record of last year’s big grosser Ayan.
The director is emphatic in saying that larger-than-life heroes are still alive and kicking. Says he, “It is the packaging that matters the most. Too much realism won’t be appreciated by the masses. Sugar-coating is required for films to run.
On how the film turned out to be a superhit, Lingusamy explains, “It was the first road movie in Tamil cinema and it had no dirt and filth. It was given a clean ‘U’ certificate and family audiences flocked in large numbers. The packaging and the lead stars were fresh. Yuvan Shankar Raja’s music played an important role as well. It was the combination of the release date, my luck and Dayanidhi Alagiri’s marketing that made the film a hit.
The director, known for his hit films Anandham, Run, Ji, Sandakozhi and Bheema, has also managed to churn out one rocking chartbuster after another. How does he manage to pull it off? He replies, “In my films, you will find good lyrics and melody in all the songs. I am a poet myself and my poems have been published in leading magazines. I make it a point to sit with my lyricist, Na Muthukumar ,in most cases, and try to make the lyrics simple. All the music directors I have worked with call me “Isai Kollakaran” (a thief who steals good tunes) and say that I extract quality work from them.
About industry veterans and trade analysts saying that the ace director has understood the pulse of the common man, Lingusamy says frankly, “You will not find my characters talking in English continuously, or being disrespectful towards elders, especially their parents. I don’t make movies for Chennai multiplex audiences. I was born and brought up in Kumbakonam and I watched many movies first day, first show during my college days. It was a learning experience for me because even today I feel that small town audiences understand films better than their multiplex brethren.
So, what’s in store for the commercial hitmaker now? “My next film is with Silambarasan for producer Dorai Alagiri. After VTV, Simbu has become a major star and has a new-found elite audience following. My mission now is to write a script that will cater to his audiences as well as my mass constituency. I think it is going to be a deadly combination at the box-office. We are going to Macau to do some brainstorming and work out a viable script. Yuvan will compose music for the film and we are on the hunt for a new heroine.” Till then, the director is content soaking in the success of Paiyaa.

40 days into the summer season the Tamil box-office is lukewarm.
Among the nearly dozen films released from April 2 to May 7, only Paiyaa can be classified as a hit. Most of the other films will not recover the cost of production.
The trouble is that too many big and small films released and there was hardly any promotion or buzz about the project.
Says trade analyst Murugan: “There was absolutely no build up to Sura, that one would associate with Vijay’s golden jubilee film. The film just released out of the blue and was out of the theatres in a few days, as the content was weak.”
Similar was the case with films like Rettaisuzhi, which was promoted “as coming together of veteran directors K Balachandar and Bharathiraja as actors”, which kept the youth audiences away. In the second week itself the multiplexes chopped the number of shows.
As a leading theatre owner said: “There was no buzz about the summer releases except Paiyaa, which had fantastic songs and something new in presentation and freshness about its lead actors which got the all important opening.
In the case of Irumbu Kottai Murattu Singam, the publicity was ok but it was confusing, many thought that it was a spoof like Tamil Padam, while the director says “it is homage to cowboy films.”

He is JD's unbiased view :P
Positives:
Karthi's acting, he has talents, he reminds of his dad Shiva Kumar, similar facial expressions
Tamanah - has done this role comfortably, normally heroines are only used for dances, here at least she is given some chance to speak, talk and act , she does well
Story is quite romantic, and I liked this aspect, the film moves at fast pace, all the journeys shown in car travel is very much enjoyable! and quite romantic :P
Negatives:
Karthi can't dance he should avoid fast paced movements. One thing that made me, when that girl (his mate) says 'Dai nee romba handsome ah irkuradaa'
Handsome na sollukue meaning eh illama poitu (then again beauty is in the eye of the beholder )
Mitsubishi lancer is NOT a 'rally' or 'sports' car, it is one of the slowest crap cars, for a movie that involves loads of car chase , lingu could have used cars like 'Honda Accord type -r', 'Subaru Impreza' or 'Mitsubishi EVO'. How can he make such basic errors
Another point, our hero single handily bashing all the goons is becoming more and more pathetic in Tamil cinemas; it is just becoming more and more irritating
On the whole, a good family entertainer, probably one of the best films I have seen this year after VTV

The movie songs are huge hit in Kerala Heard it through some orkut fans in kerala. Every Channel, Fm, Radio keep playing Paiya songs. There was a good response from the crowd in theater too.
Paiya will certainly make it big in Telugu. Waiting for it!

I disagree with this rating now because I just saw the movie and its another superb movie its told very differently and I just love Karthik's acting i feel in his recent films he seems to be acting better Suriya! Karthik is such a natural in this film that u dont even feel he is a new actor... u have a feeling that he has been there for ages and pretty princess tamanna has also done a great job she is not exactly such a glam doll in this movie she also gets a huge role in the movie! This film is absolutely superb... Karthik is a natural actor with a lot of talent... and Tammana has performed really well for her role in this film! Yuvan Shankar Raja has given us a great soundtrack... I'm simply in love with some of the songs especially Adada Mazhai Da even the picturization in the rain was amazing

Lingusamy’s ‘Paiyaa’ has successfully completed 100 days of run and is still going strong. The youthful road film released on April 2 is one of the few block busters of the year.
‘Paiyaa’ is the first road movie in Tamil deftly handled by Lingusamy. His fast paced narration and the excellent music from Yuvan Shankara Raja made the film shift to top gear at the box office from the second week itself. Yuvan’s songs are still topping the music charts even after 9 weeks.
Karthik scored a hat trick and Tamnnah got her first real hit in ‘Paiyaa’. The chemistry between the lead actors is well noticed by all and they are now considered a popular Jodi preferred by film makers. Cinematography by Madhi and editing by Antony are big strengths of Lingusamy in this film.

It is a fantastic century by any yardstick, in these hard days.
Lingusamy and his team deserve a pat on their back for this unique distinction at a time when movies are finding it difficult to run for 10 days! Lingusamy, Yuvan Shankar Raja, Karthi and Tamannaah along with Cloud Nine can take credit for the stupendous success of the film.
Says a leading exhibitor: “ Paiyaa was a beautiful packaged entertainer from Lingusamy with all essential ingredients that worked with the mass and class audiences. The extra edge was provided by Yuvan’s music and the romantic chemistry between Karthi and Tamannaah was just perfect.”
The trade facts about the film is that it must have cost around Rs 12 crore, but has collected approximately Rs 35 crore from theatricals and other rights. Paiyaa can now be called a blockbuster as it has made three times its investment.

Ya hubbers, karthi was gud but the story lacked much surprises and plots. Sometime before the movie release i heard that the film was a thriller but it wasn't of that genre. With respective to karthi and tamanna i wud call it a blockbuster but on the whole it was something average for me due to same material from lingu . Watched it once and second time for tamanna. Karthi's fight in paruthiveeran was more nice than paiyaa's. The most admirable thing in paiyya was that car concept.
