Kalainjar Mu.Karunanithi has contributed a lot to Tamil cinema as a story ,Dialogue and Lyrics writer

Early career of both NT and Makkal Thilagam had a great connection with Karunanithi .He penned dialogues for NT's first movie parasakthi ,which not only gave great NT to tamil cinema ,but changed the face of Tamil cinema itself.His dialogues for NT in movies Parasakthi and manohara became benchmarks for dialgues then.First time in tamil cinema history young people and young actors who wanted to became actors byheart these dialogues to prove themselves in front of others .

Makkal thilagam MGR's first movie as a hero 'Rajakumari' also penned by Karunanithi ,other noteable MGR movies were Manthiri kumari and malaikallan ,which made MGR as star.

Apart from NT and MGR ,he also penned so many other movies like 'Poompuhar' ,'Neethikku thandanai' ,'Paasa paravaigal' 'Paalaivana Raojakkal'.

Let us discuss about Kalainjar's contribution to Tamil cinema (not as a politician)

Chennai, Sept 24: The doyens of Tamil film industry joined together to felicitate Chief Minister M Karunanidhi at a colourful function here when the Kollywood veteran was presented with a silver throne and a pen-shaped sceptre.

The function at the Nehru indoor stadium last night was preceded by a glittering show which saw artistes from four generations taking part in song, dance and play sequences.

Depicting a spirit of camaraderie, the entire film fraternity, including actors, producers, directors and exhibitors took part in the show, organised by the Tamil Nadu Film Producers Association and the Directors Association.

At the function titled 'Gala Festival for Shining Sun of the World of Arts', Karunanidhi, a veteran in story, script, dialogue and song writing, was lauded for his contributions to the Tamil film world.

The stars who participated in the event included Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, Satyaraj, Vikram, Vijay, Meena, Asin, Trisha, Sneha, Nila, Kushboo and yesteryear actress Padmini.

Vijaykanth, MLA, a new entrant to politics from Kollywood, was also present.

Maharashtra Governor S M Krishna released a souvenir on the occasion even as Karunanidhi was presented with the silver throne and the pen-shaped sceptre.

Film shootings had been cancelled for two days throughout Tamil Nadu as a run-up to the event.

Karunanidhi was born on June 3, 1924, in the village of Thirukuvalai, near Thiruvarur in Tanjore district, the granary of Tamil Nadu. His father Muthuvel was a scholar and a pandit, and his mother Anjugam, a devoted and loving housewife. "I was not the pet child of an affluent home. I was born of ordinary peasant stock, in a little village," said Karunanidhi.

As a student, he did not envince much inclination for routine studies. But he had a keen taste for drama, poetry, and Tamil literature. As a lad of 13, he plunged into a cultural and social movement, attracted by the great orator Alagiriswami, a pillar of the then Justice Party, who came to Thiruvarur to address a meeting in 1932. The seeds of public spirit and service were sown in him by Alagiriswami.

As a teenager, he gathered all the students of the locality, and formed them into a reformist association of youth. The Sangam as it was termed, provided a form for the boys to train themselves in the arts of speaking and writing. He soon extended the Sangam's sphere of activities to make it a statewide organization styled "All Students' Unity Kazhagam" A single-sheet bulletin, named Manavar Nesan was circulated among its members. The writings of Karunanidhi, usually marked by a lofty style and literary flourish, became very popular among the Tamil youth. His eloquent speeches, along with his writing ability, made him a natural leader of the students.

At a student's convention in Tanjore, Karunanidhi was enlisted as an important participant. But when he understood that the organising body had ulterior political objectives, he withdrew from the convention. As a counter move he started a new organisation called 'Tamil Manavar Manram', where he brought together all young people with a love for the Tamil tongue and culture. It was under the auspices of the manram that the now popular newspaper 'Murasoli' was born.

Besides these cultural activities, Karunanidhi involved himself and the student community in social work. Along with his comrades, he would visit the nearby hutments to do all that was possible within his limits. This was indeed a fitting apprenticeship for his later years as a Chief Minister

It was on the first anniversary celebrations of 'Murasoli' and 'Manavar Mandram' that Karunanidhi came into contact with student leaders like Anbazhagan, Nedunchezhiyan & Mathiazhagan, who were his ministerial colleagues later.

Karunanidhi who was a gifted stage artiste, put up a play titled Shanti, under the banner Davida Nataka Manram in Pondicherry. In this play he rendered the role of Sivaguru, which received much applause. This aroused the wrath of Congressmen, and there was resistance to the Dravidan movement. But the impact of this play made both Periyar & Annadurai visit Pondicherry and address a public meeting. Chaos followed the meeting, which was disturbed by miscreants. Karunanidhi was assaulted on the way back to his Manavar Manram. He was unconscious, when a kind neighbour nursed him back to consciousness in his house.

"Art without an ideal is like a house without roofing", he often said. True to his words he revolutionised the Tamil stage with the controversial play 'Thooku Medai', for which he wrote the script. It roused the political and social sentiments of the people, and the then Government banned the play.

When the Justice party was transformed to Dravida Kazhagam, Karunanidhi designed the party flag. A black flag with a red circle was decided tentatively. It is said that Karunanidhi drew the red circle with his blood as a beginning for all the blood he shed for the honour of the party and the Tamils. The black was a reminder to the backwardness of the people who the party were keen on liberating, and the red circle represented the progressive aspirations of the Dravida Kazhagam.

At the age of 20, Karunanidhi married Padmavathy Ammayyar, and went to work for Jupiter Pictures as a script writer. His first film 'Rajakumari', gained him much popularity. It was here that his skills as a script writer were honed. He wrote more than 70 screenplays including Rajakumari, Abhimanyu, Mandiri Kumari, Marutha Naattu Ilavarasi, Manamagan, Devaki, Parasakthi, Panam, Thirumbipaar, Naam, Manohara, Ammaiappan, Malai Kallan, Rangoon Radha, Raja Rani, Puthaiyal, Pudhumai Pithan, Ellorum Innattu Mannar, Kuravanchi, Thayillapillai, Kanchi Thalaivan, Poompuhar, Poomalai, Mani Makudam, Marakka Mudiyuma? Avan Pithana? Pookkari, Needhikku Thandanai, Paalaivana Rojakkal, Pasa Paravaikal, Padadha Theneekkal, Niyaya Tharasu.

Being hardcore NT fan, I can remember only MKs writing for his films.

Did he ever wrote for NT in the sixties? I recall him only writing, mostly, for films with SSR in it.

Though in the eighties, he was quite active, penning hits like Pasa Paravaigal, Palaivana Rojakkal, and my favourite, Kavalukku Kettikaaran which had funny lines.

Let us put it this way, the organizers of the function either suffered from lack of time or cooperation from other quarters. How else can one explain the fact that around 15000 invitations were given out for the function when the venue had a maximum capacity of only 8000. The number of invitations is nearly double the capacity. The organizers will have a lot of answering to do in the days to come.

VIPs vs general public
They also seem to have forgotten to earmark different entrances for VIPs and general public. There was a stampede at the mouth of the entrance which was supposed to be exclusively for VIPs. Either the VIPs have lost their senses or the people at the entrance were not VIPs. The stampede resulted in the police closing down the VIP entrance and wait for the CM�s convoy to arrive. This meant that many of the VIPs carrying valid invitations were left standing outside waiting for their turn. Some of the stars who were stranded outside were Madhavan, Srikanth, Prabhu and Ramkumar.

They were lucky to be able to make their way inside after a 10 minute wait. However some of the lesser lights like Vishal, Vikranth and Rajesh had to leave in disappointment.

Trisha waits�Prabhu Deva leaves�
The woes of the stars who made their way into the venue were not over. Seats were not available and many of the big names were seen standing through the event. Madhavan could not find a seat and after standing around for an hour left the venue. The less patient likes of Prabhu Deva and Ravichandran left even before the function began. Trisha, in spite of her striking good looks had to keep standing for 30 minutes before she could sit and her mother had to be satisfied with a seat in the back rows along with the general public.

Balu Mahendra�s walk-out and Namitha�s scary moments
The police too seemed to have lost a bit of their discretion amidst the confusion. They were seen refusing entry to many of the towering figures of the industry. Balu Mahendra is perhaps the best example; he walked away from the entrance after a policeman refused to let him in. Namitha endured a few scary moments when there was a big crowd around the car. Eventually it was Abbas (organizer) who came to the rescue (some good work at last). Police also reportedly manhandled female lyricist Thaamarai when she wanted to be let in.

CM felicitation
Hope that such incidents do not recur, especially on days that are supposed to be celebrations of good work done. Hope that organizers count the number of seats before handing out invitations. Hope that police is given a lesson on film personalities and general courtesy and first aid.

The writer thought that 'striking good looks' will qualify anyone to VIP podium. (Hope you didn't write this Kamalsurya; if so, I shall retract my laughter back...which would be difficult and have choking effect).

As for the show, I caught it last night.

Yeah. Some of the speeches were okay. But I kinda got sick on the stomach hearing too much praises.

And Manorama. She said the whole of DMK, and the spin-offs existence owes it to MuKa. Not entirely true, is it not? What about Anna? What about other people who worked hard for it. NT and Kannadhasan in the beginning days before they split the joint. SSR? K.Ramasamy? What about the great (Sorry Nakeera, allow me to write his name) MGR, who worked hard and spent his money and was instrumental in the spin off party? These are just people from cinema. What about the non-cinema people?

And she joined Muka's drama troupe. But what about the people who brought her to cinema? SSR and Kannadhasan? And Kannadhasan told her to forget about heroine, she should be doing comedy....which she made as career choice till today?

It goes to some others as well. Saying that there won't be Sivaji if not for Parasakthi is also too much. Sivaji, with or without MuKa or Anna would have surfaced because of his burning talent. Sivaji, with or without MuKa, would have still proven himself in the dialogue delivery (Veerapandiyan Kattabomman for example).

So, I hope people will be more realistic in their praises. Praise for what he really did...like the quality of films that came out at that era, the tenacity to address sensitive issues in those films, his powerful wordplay (Siva Kumar did a wonderful rendition of the famous scene in Manohara), and later his contribution as a CM.

I hate it if a talent's birth are attributed to a single person alone. Without KB, there will always be Kamal and Rajini. These two are used by KB, because KB knows they have talent.

Oh hell..I was rambling.

Anyway, back to the show. Another major pi**-off factor for me was the dances. What the hell have they got to do with the show?

And the remixes. I don't mind remixes, as long as they are in good taste. Of course, these 'remixes' are actually cover songs. Not good quality at all. I wonder what Kalaignar thought those songs.

As mentioned by Joe, those are the good points of the show. Rajini was too angry (I was told that there were criticism about organising the show, and he was angry) but managed to get his message across loud and clear.

Five hours was too much. Two would have been nice.

This was excatly mentioned by great Anna .When AVM was not satisfied with sivaji as a hero even after almost completion of shooting ,co -producer Perumal and Anna were firm on their stand "Ganesan must be there". That is why NT treat Perumal as his GOD until his death.

I think ,we no need to take manorama's speach ,she is a legend on screens ,but off screens ,when comes to speak in any function ,she is always too exagration .She did it for Jayalalitha also .Once she offended Rajini also to support Jaya then.

As you mentioned ,I always feel ,when there is such function ,most of the people praise the person of the function to the core .This makes their credibility of their praise to nothing.,Even though I like Rajini for speaking his mind ,he is always overboard in praising kalainjar or jayalaitha or anybody .

I like kamal in that aspect ,he mostly ignore 'adaimozhi's when addressing others (exception NT and kalainjar) .He never called 'Puradchi thalaivi' etc etc .Even in chevalie(to NT) function ( I was lucky to attend the function) ,he just call JJ as "Muthalvar avargale"..

Yeah. They were busy chatting that time. And you are right, most of them were against him during the election. Even Barathiraja admitted that during his speech. When Kalaignar himself talked about it, they showed Barathiraja, smiling sheepishly.

It should be strange ,since you are in malaysia .But for people in TN ,they already used to these comedies ,they don't take this as serious.

Pattam ,Maalai ,Kreedam ,ponnaadi ,Poster ,Pugazh kavithai etc etc are very common in TN politics.

Not quite. Not quite, Joe. It happens here, too. Briefly I was working for a magazine that highlighted Malaysian music entertainment scene. I saw all that. Not much on the poster or Pugazh kavithai (not many that talented, and poster can be expensive).

Needless to say, I didn't stay long. Interviewing and writing about them was probably the darkest moment in my life. Not all...some are realistic, but most!!!!

I had great respect for Rajini and Kamal.....I lost those respect for them...What is left is the only admiration for their style and acting prowess....

Now I respect Ajith a lot...He is the one with STRONG and STEADY MIND not to attend any functions of politicians and praise them unnecessarily...

there is a kootani dharmam in everything...in cine industry too!...u need not participate in a vetri vizha or paaratu vizha...but "nandri vizha" is a bit different thing!

anyway...its kalaingar's part ...who should have stopped this!...rama narayanan who is close to kalaingar has arranged this vizha...and kalaingar being a pazhutha arasiyalvaathi should have avoided it decently instead of watching unwanted shows!

The organisers should know how to honour a eldest political leader and shound arrange by the way of some cutural folk and Barathanatyam dances. By attending these functions and praising people directly/indirectly many people will be benefitted. There is nothing wrong in it.

People in film industry are also public ,voters just like you and me.when CM did something beneficial for a industry or set of people ,they used to thank (As thirumaran mentioned ,it is not ncessary to praise a CM to do his duty,but when they volutirely come to thank,why we need to stop) CM .If CM do something for Govt.Employees they also make a function to fecilitate CM ,but their function may consists of what they can do (just speach ,ponnadai etc) .same way ,when CM do something good for film industry (not just stars ,thousands of workers also) they want to thank in their way and they do what they know .They should know what should be done for a CM and what should not be done..why to blame CM ?(kalainjar or JJ)

Never knew there was diggression. I guess its all about survival. Like Rajini said, there are many of them suffering. Cinema is a big industry...and then there are the spinoff industry like costume, furniture (sets), etc. There are dancers, stuntment and thousands of crew members.

If films were to flop one after another like flies, it means death of all these jobs.

I know I complained about over-praising, but that is also a platform to make others (and media) to realise the need for the industry to keep moving.

To many cinema only means stars. There are other than stars there-without whom there is no cinema. I think Rajini brought out that issue.

They should have concentrated on that - to plead and voice their pleas.

I never watch most of the new films...but I am happy to hear that there are some real quality products coming out. That shouldn't stop.

Great Post Selvakumar but i think the reasons can be this.

1) The recent elections had many actors/actresses canvassing against MK and to appease him they might have organised this function.

2) CM helped imsai arasan to release and also a few other movies and get the tax exemption rule on track which might have made them organise this function.

That is for the purpose of organising this function.

Other than that there is actually nothing in the function that is done to help tamil cinema beneficially...just done for mere appeasement and the only good thing in that whole show was the vadivel comedy.

This is precisely what I meant. It is a known fact that some actors / actresses favor MK while others favor JJ. Why should the ..... cine industry @ Nadigar sangam should convince them ? and should rely on them. Again,

I agree with this point. It helped Imsai Arasan alone. What about the other people who are working hard in other movies. Were there any thing announced fro them?

For eg, Pirated VCD problem which was disturbing the industry was marked an end and the film collections too increased.
But even with this tax exemption, people will be left with increased ticket price irrespective of tax exemption

But I feel that tax exemption is:

Point is : Tamil should be used naturally rather than with force or exemption.

Selva....RK's speech during JJ regime...did you go through it? I will laugh at what RK spoke during MK's felicitation.......

I read RK's lines between these two felicitations of JJ and MK.........

Here in JJ's felecitation...RK was saying why should I come out in the open and fight for the piracy and what will the CM do in this case...he was thinking the CM won't think about it or is powerless.....but later realised it...what CM can do..........after seeing this I judged (this is my personal opinion) that Rajini has to learn a lot........

Now in the MK's felicitation...He was indirectly pointing out at some persons who were against MK.....so who are those persons...those persons are from tamil filmdom who went against MK......what was this needed for.....it is known to everybody and why does he want to rekindle the fire....he is adding more ghee into the fire.....Rajini talks about some short term memory loss...and clarifies it...no point.........still Rajini has a long way to go...........

Why I say this is............We all know that Ajith used to be very free and open in his speech before....due to which there were lots of media criticisms.....but later he stopped it completely.....Why....coz he knew he has to mature a lot....if you speak a line....it can be twisted into 1000 ways to mean differently...so Ajith learnt it the hard way....

I am not here to argue for Karunanithi or not to support all the praises for him .But just want to mention few points

1.Karunanithi did Tax excemption for movies with tamil title .It is no way imposing anything .You are free to put english title,there is no additional Tax or punishment .But If you put a tamil name ,you will get Tax excemption .So it is upto you

You claim the beneficiery is only producer and distributer ,not people .That is true .This is not beneficiery for common people ,but cine industry .That is why they are praisng karunanithi .Since they got Tax excemption ,the rate of return of investment will increase .So more people will come to produce movies ,more movies will hit screens ,more people will get job ,more money will rotate in cine industry.

2.karunanithi reduced the rental fee for one day shooting in a place in tamil nadu .Hope you know most of the Tamil movies were shooted outside TN ,since one day charge for take a shooting in TN is much much high compare to other states like Andra .That is why people go to andra to shoot Tamil movies .So local workers in TN loose their job .But Karunanithi reduced the Vaadagai charge to 25% ,Just 1/4 th of previous charge (Eg .Places like raraji hall ,now very cheap to rent for a day) .So more shootings will be held in TN ,so local workers will get job

MK sitting for 7 hours of program..why was he sitting..so that he can get enjoyment thru those dances.....is this required....7 hours....and lots of traffic woes.....police deployment....etc etc.....

there was a felicitation ceremony. The chief minister of Tamil Nadu was felicitated and stuff. By the the 'film fraternity'. Whatever that means. Anyway, that ceremony caused huge traffic problems, required a police presence that rivaled devastating terrorist attacks. What is worse, the chief minister of the state of Tamil Nadu sat there for 7 hours. 7 straight hours. So, what I want you to do is this -- file RTI petitions to find out the total number of policemen deployed for this ceremony alone. Compare it with the available data on the policemen who were solving crime in the city. Next, try and get the chief minister's work schedule -- am not sure if this is possible. But your activisty soul wouldn't be assuaged if it were not so difficult. Then, compare the 7 hours on a single day with his everyday work schedule.

Can you pl explain how the RATE OF RETURN ON INVESTMENT WILL INCREASE ?
I thought the tax is something which will be collected from the public and paid to the govt.
There is neither a gain nor a loss. In such a situation, how the rate of return will increase ?

Tax is something which is collected on behalf of the govt ( pl see any bill. Tax appears after the basic price ) and being paid to the govt the next month.

This will not impact your return on investment.

Thanks Andavan . Still wonder how a producer will benefit out of it ! This indirect profit must have been pocketed by the theatre owner .
Second, people are not fools to get deceived so easily .
Third, how this will encourage the producers to take new movies ?

but as you say..it is the film fraternity from TN who is thanking MK...good...no harm in it....but as a wise politician...he shouldn't have attended thats why i am trying to put.....why he has done it is purely to show the public....that these film personalities will run here and there...i don't want to put any other words which are very crude....just let me stop here...see JJ felicitation..then you will come to know the meaning of running between these politicians....to save themselves...
