Rahul likely to give Vijay starring role in TN -IE

The move is something we knew for a while; only its date bore an element of suspense. Now, it looks like Vijay is going to join the Congress on September 9.

Called Ilayathalapathi by his fans, the young film actor is most likely to join the country’s oldest political party in the presence of AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi. The official announcement, sources say, will come on September 7, a day prior to Rahul’s three-day visit to Tamil Nadu. “Await a major political decision at Tuesday’s press conference,” a source said.

When Vijay did the 2008 film 'Kuruvi', produced by Chief Minister M Karunanidhi’s grandson Udhayanidhi Stalin, the speculation was that

the star would be joining the DMK. All that changed recently when the 35-year-old actor’s recent meeting with Rahul in New Delhi.

The state Congress currently has no big cine star. It was an impressive turnout at one of Vijay’s functions in Puducherry that prompted the Congress to rope him in.

At a Pudukkotai function recently, Vijay christened his fan clubs as Makkal Iyakkam (People’s Movement). More such programmes followed, and his fan clubs have spread — there are about 37,000 rasikar mandrams for Vijay, with 9.25 lakh members. The ruling DMK might co-opt actor Surya to counter Vijay.
