Something Something Unakkum Enakkum

M.Raja , the “remake raja” of Kollywood has done it again with another xerox copy of M.S.Raju’s Telugu film Nuvvostanante Nenoddantana which becomes Something Something Unakkum Enakkum. The film is a feel-good family entertainer which has been largely borrowed from Hindi flicks like Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya in the first half and Maine Pyaar Kiya in the second half!

Voila! You have a saccharine coated candy floss champion that is superbly packaged with camera of A.Venkatesh, Devi Sri Prasad’s melodious music and above all the superb performance of Jayam Ravi and Trisha. Muthupandi( Prabhu) is a son of the soil, a very hard working self-made man who dotes on his only sister Kavitha (Trisha). Their mother passed away very early and it was Muthupandi who brought up Kavi with a lot of love and affection. Kavi’s best friend Lalitha(Richa Pallod) takes Kavi to her house for a few days for her pre-marriage celebrations.

Enter Santhosh (Ravi) a happy-go-lucky, son a millionaire (Bhagyaraj and Geeta) NRI’s from London. Santhosh is the opposite of Kavi in upbringing and status but by interval both fall in love. But what is love without obstacles? Santhosh’s sophisticated mother throws a spanner with the help of a sleaze ball (Manivannan) who wants Santhosh to marry his daughter (Tejasree).

Santhosh gets away from his dominating mother at the Dubai airport in transit to London and comes to Kavi’s village and asks Muthu for his sister’s hand. But the proud man hates rich people and put forward a condition which he thinks will drive the crazy fellow away! But how Santhosh takes up the bet and comes out in flying colours as he not only harvest more rice than Muthu but also wins over everyone with his good nature.

Although the characters are built on obvious clichés, the charming performance of artists bring these seemingly archetypes to life. Jayam Ravi as the hyperactive, young man is just a riot! All the noises that he makes, facial expressions and body movements are good. Trisha is amazing as Kavi and she captures the zest and passion called for by the script. Her innocent looks and adorable smile are her biggest assets. The on-screen chemistry between the lead pair, their hilarious bickering and bonding stays with you a long time after the film is over.

Prabhu as Muthupandi is at the epicenter of the film and he is convincing and lovable as an elder brother. The supporting cast like Bhagyaraj, Richa Pallod, Geeta and others are top class. On the downside the film is too lengthy and would have been racy if the last song and the long winded climax were trimmed. Some scenes in the film lack Tamil nativity and local flavour.

On the whole, the film is packaged and presented well with enough masalas and is sure to grab your attention.

Verdict: Packaged entertainer!

Sinnie can always do better. First of all, Having hair on the head helps ur acting a great deal when ur a heroin!

Oh lord. Because of Thirumaran, so many posts already...esp ones quoting each other...anyway! Surya, I like the pottu you added on Asin's face. Thirumaran, have u seen SSUE already? Well many people haven't see it yet...so this will prolly take a few days to get started...but I just wanted it to be there, seeing the huge excitement it has generated.

Brothers hit it off well again

(Unakum Enakum)

If you are sick of gangster movies, there is something to look for. Something Something Unakum Enakum is a feel-good film, has the contents to keep the audience engaged, thanks to the nice wrap up of romance, humour and emotions.

It's all the handiwork of family. Director Raja has remade Prabhudeva's debut directorial venture in Telugu Nuvvostanante Nenoddantana with all sincerity. It is another matter that being inspired by the likes of Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya, Maine Pyaar Kiya and Hum Aapke Hain Koun.

Amidst his recent drubbings at the box-office, the break has come at the right time for Jayam Ravi. In the role of a happy-go-lucky NRI, he brings cheers all round with his dialogues and body language.

Be it in the callous ways or a responsible farmer, pursuing his love, Ravi is at home in the character with his myriad expresssions.

Having done the original, Trisha plays her part unflinchingly, lending the expected support. It's a treat to watch her facial expressions. Thanks to the support of lensman Venkatesh, Devi Prasad (music), the movie gets the right fillip.

The movie is about a protective and possessive brother (Prabhu) and his cute sister Trisha. When the NRI (Ravi) pines for her, opposition emanate from both circles. Leaving his parents, Ravi is on a mission to get the girl. There is the challenge from Prabhu to take farming and come out with a better yield.

Switching over to character roles is an ingenious move by Prabhu. He executes the strong, emotion-filled role of a loving brother in style.

As the father of Ravi, Bhakyaraj is not taxed much. Perhaps, the director settled for a brand name.

The movie has a huge star cast including Richa Pallod, Tejashree, Manivannan, Geetha, Kalabhavan Mani and Ganja Karuppu among others.

The pace slackens in the second half after the fun-filled early segments. All the same, a hat-trick of sorts from the brothers after Jeyam and M Kumaran.

Watched This wonderful movie..... Jus excellent...

Tho it was an utter copy (even the dance movements & costumes in some songs) I really thot Jeyam Ravi did a gud job..

Trisha was awesome jus like in NVNV ....

Santhanam's comedy is the big plus in the first half ! His timing was excellent!

All in All , A very good Family Entertainer....

This wud be the first blockbuster of this year i guess

this seems like a good review to go by...I can't wait to see it. Hopefully it will be better than the Telugu version.

People...We know Trisha usually is roped in for glamour and bubbly characters in previous tamil movies but this is the first time there is some maturity in her performance in this film..even if we dunt like her atleast we can appreciate her performance...criticising her like this is too much..

Let us keep this thread to only reviews about the film...Trisha pathi anti show naduthunum naa trisha thread leh veichukunga pa....Trisha has performed very well in this movie...let us give some compliments for this. Lesa Lesa and Manasellam is not really off the mark...Lesa Lesa she had a bubbly character but she was not really that emotive...Manasellam did not sound too melodramatic enough...she underplayed that role.

she too has handled only bubbly roles(except the awesome work durin her death in Gajni )

Asin seems more vibrant than Trisha that is what we can say...abit more expressive in the sad scenes but other than that on par with Trisha. But to make Asin sound like 10 times better than Trisha is abit of comedy really...

Anyway Asins got a cool face cut with the ability to shower some fresh naughty expressions and can also emote well in sentimental sequences.(she overacts at times )
But shes no equal for the bubbly and most beautiful 3sa with perfect frame and subtle chasty expressions who can melt hearts with a mere wink

Something Something Unakkum Enakkum

Jeyam Ravi, Trisha One could say this is a love story that can be seen by the family, or a family story that can be seen by lovers.

Bhagyaraj’s son Jayam Ravi is a millionaire in London. Trisha is the sister of Prabhu, a farmer in a village in south India. Ravi comes to Tamilnadu to attend the marriage of his cousin Richa Palot and at her wedding, he meets her friend Trisha.

Starting with some minor skirmishes, Ravi and Trisha’s feelings develop into love at some point. But prestige and status comes in the way of their love. Ravi’s mother Geetha insults Trisha and gets ready to leave for London with her son.

But can one suppress the wind or feelings of love? In mid journey, Ravi takes leave of his mom and gets back to Trisha. But Prabhu refuses to accept Ravi. He challenges Ravi to live like a farmer and reap a harvest that’s better than Prabhu’s and then he would give his sister in marriage to him. How the hero completes the challenge and gets the hand of his lady love forms the rest of the story.

After the introductory scenes ooze of brother-sister sentiment of Prabhu-Trisha like ‘Paasa Malar’ range, the film becomes peppy and lively with the introduction of Ravi.

The antics of Ravi, Trisha and company at the marriage house are lively and full of humour.

When Ravi and Trisha go to confront Richa Palot’s ex-boyfriend who is threatening her, they get caught with the dog and these scenes where they try to escape it are real funny.

In the first half, Ravi’s facial expressions in various humorous scenes is a comedy riot in itself. In sharp contrast, he languishes into sentiment in the second half. Ravi is a rich boy who can have anything with a click of his fingertips, but when he toils to till the land and scoops cowdung as part of his farm work, he really has slogged.

Jeyam Ravi, Trisha, Geetha,Bagyaraj, Prabhu, Mouli, Malika, Kanja karupu He is happy to eat rice with chilli powder as if it is manna from heaven and earns a kiss from Trisha. One can see the soft sentiment of love in such scenes. Trisha is pulled on one side by her brother’s love and on the other by Ravi’s love and the play of emotions she exhibits are a treat to the eyes.

When Ravi’s father Bhagyaraj says to Trisha, “I feared that my son would not appreciate the treasures of this soil, but I am happy that he’s going to through you,” not only Bhagyaraj’s eyes but that of the audience also gets moist with sentiment.

Prabhu’s role in this film reminds one of the role played by dad Sivaji in ‘Paasa Malar.’ After a long time, this role has given Prabhu scope for acting. Even though Prabhu challenges Ravi, when he prays in the climax that Ravi should not lose, he delivers a great piece of acting.

There is comedy now and then from other characters. Tejasri makes halwa to lure Ravi, Manivannan and Kalabhavan Mani try their best to separate the lovers but to no avail, and Livingstone is constantly on the cell phone creating confusion. Ganja Karuppu’s role is puzzling. Is it comedy or villainy? It seems to be neither.

A Venkatesh’s cinematography is very pleasing to the eye. The song ‘Kozhi vedakozhi’ composed by Devisriprasad is sure to be among the top ten hits of this year. Fefsi Vijayan’s action scenes in the climax are noteworthy.

With a whole battalion of stars, director Raja has delivered a nice story narrated intelligently. Hopefully, he will continue his good work in his next project too.

‘Something Something Unakkum Enakkum’ is for everybody.

Trisha – fans come to agreement

Will anyone antagonize fans who do milk abhishekam? Well, Trisha has.

Everyone knows that Trisha's Malaysian fan Jessie started a fan club for her in Chennai.

That day, Jessie conducted an extravagant milk abhishekam for a humongous cut out of Trisha.

Trisha called this nonsense. Her feeling was, instead of wasting so much milk, it could have been given to poor children. So, the fans decided that Trisha cutouts will not receive any more milk abhishekams.

Just after this incident died down, 'Something Something Unakkum Enakkum' got released. This is the first film that got released after Trisha's fan club started. The fans celebrated with banners, posters, cut-outs as well as a flag with Trisha's face in the centre. This was made much of in the media.
Trisha

People started gossiping that Trisha was to enter politics and this upset Trisha. She held the fan club responsible for such irresponsible rumours and started categorically that she would lend no hand to their activities in future. With Trisha and fans at tug of war, the matter has finally been resolved.

After the fans promised to indulge only in meaningful activities, Trisha had a change of heart. After she returned from Hyderabad, Trisha agreed to participate in the club's charity activities.

Trisha and her fans have made up. a third world war has been prevented!

Last nite, I went for this movie with my children - at the recommendation of Villan007.
The 6pm show was full house at the 888-seat Coliseum and therefore booked for the 9pm show. Had to pay adult price for my kids too.

Went shopping around the area and then dinner at Coliseum Cafe next door. Good food but the prices have soared since the last time I was there. For those who havent visited the restaurant, the decor is colonial and reminiscent of the days when only British were allowed to dine there, one can see several past century settings like coat hangers, very old waiters dressed in starched white uniforms.

The movie was quite satisfying. The first half was a laugh riot - partly due to Santhanam and also due to the slick direction. Regular actors were also hillarious.

I hope this movie will succeed, at least to sway away from gangster movies. It is purely a feel-good movie, suitable for the entire family. I dont watch Hindi, Telugu or any non Tamil Indian movies, so have no idea of the original.

Jayam Ravi did very well - he was comical and serious as when the situation required it. The greatest joy was seeing this movie without any heroism that is so common in Tamil movies these days. One can enjoy the story without unwarranted build-ups.
His only drawback - isnt there anyone who can dub for him?

Trisha. What can I say. She did pretty well and she was indeed eye candy for those who desire it.

Songs fitted the movie well. Only that almost three hours seemed too long. However, it appeared like all the old-timers who acted in the movie - Sachu, Manivannan, K. Bhagyaraj, Geetha, etc - enjoyed every moment in acting in this movie!
Prabhu has a meaty role after the dismay of Vasoolraja and Chandramukhi.

Would I recomment this movie?
Yes, if you are sick of heroism and gangsterism. Yes, if you want to have a clean entertainment minus the gory stuff and bodily thrusts.

Evidently lots of people hold my opinion, I realised as I pushed through huge hoards of people as they were waiting for the midnite show. :

Chennai, Aug 8 (IANS) Prabhu Deva directed the Telugu "Nuvvostante nenoddantana", which ran for several months and became a landmark film. Jeyam Raja decided to remake it in Tamil to salvage his younger brother Jeyam Ravi's sagging career. Like the Telugu original, the Tamil version has also stormed the box office.

The top five Tamil films are:

1. "Unakkum Enakkum Something Something" - Director: Raja. This remake, as expected, has appealed to all those who love romantic comedies. Many doubted actor Ravi's ability to match the sophistication of Siddharth, who did the Telugu original, but Ravi has hit it off as an NRI. And Trisha has come off better than in the original.

2. "Imsai Arasan 23rd Pulikesi" - Director: Simbudevan. People are still thronging theatres to see the film and laughing their hearts out. A blockbuster!

3. "Uyir" - Director: Samy. It was first publicised as Srikanth's film. With Sangeeta giving a fiery performance as the sex-starved sister-in-law of Srikanth, he is no longer in the posters. It has become a Sangeeta film. Very rarely does a Tamil film run on the strength of an actress, but "Uyir" is one of them.

4. "Parijatham" - Director: Bhagyaraj. This is the surprise hit of 2006. With "Something something", it may lose its charm because both are fun-filled comedies and "Something..." is definitely doing better.

5. "Thiruttu Payale" - Director: Susie Ganesan. The film has completed 100 days, which is a big achievement these days.

Good morning guys ...

A few minutes before I head out to to have breakfast by the sea ... It rained moderately here, this morning. So the weather is great. Cloudy. Breezy. And nothing beats a cuppa with the seaview. And a good magazine in hand. Light reading is a better option on weekends - for me, that is.

Something Something Unakum Enakum ??? I watched it last weekend. I dont know what people ( on the whole ) define a 'hit' as .... but, if a hit is something watchable and appeals to the mass, then this is, i guess. A 'hit' movie, yup. Not a 'good' movie.

Good movies you remember despite the years. Hit movies - you say, " Ya .... "

New ones which were good ?? Anbe Sivam. Kanathil Muthamittal. ABCD.
Thavamai Thavamirunthu.... for me. But, opinions differ, so ....
