Tamil films have "chinna paadalgal" in most of the films and most of these songs are very nice..

1. Iru vizhi unathu - Minnale
2. Hulla gulla - Bombay
3. Paartha vizhi - Guna
4. Mundhi mundhi vinaayagare - veera

Dishyum had some mini songs as well used integrally to reflect on the emotions of the lead pair. Enn Kadhal appears as a mini song in the film Thambi which is a beautiful composition. Usually offbeat films have a tendency to have loads of mini songs. Azhagi can be considered as one of them.

Some of the best mini songs are to be found in Kadhal Konden. Infact, I think the lyrics played a very important role in bringing out the mood of the songs like none have before.

Sree ranga is not a small song. It had two saranam and around 5 minutes. Though in the movie just one saranam was used.

The real small songs in Mahanathi are..

1. Anbaana Thaaya vittu..
2. Engeyo thikku thisai(starts with Hindi lyrics)

How about Mandram vandha thendralukku from Mouna Raagam.Can that be classified as a mini song?IT doesnt play for a long time in the movie rite.Its one of my fav songs

It is not a small song. It had two saranams and comes aroun 5 miutes.

Aadiyila Kaathadicha seems like those folk sad melodies by IR in the 80s era...to top it off SPB's soulful singing really makes us think IR composed that song. Quite similar to thenpaandi cheemayilae abit.

Chinna Thayaval - Thalapathy...this will really pinch the hearts of mothers and the starting carnatic violin piece just sets the mood..

Sindhu bhairavi has some small songs to its credit..

Sindhu and JKB discuss about translating songs... there Sindhu sings "Un thayavillaiya...". That song picturisation shows the relationship between them getting closer ..

Even the song "Thom thom thana namtha thom thom" can be classified as a short song..

Rami akka thats my favourite song...it was written by Abavaanan whose lyrics are usually focussing on motivation of man in his struggles.

It starts off with the Majhi (the boatman) reciting a song that goes thus
"Ebar tor Mora Gange/ Ban eseche joy ma bole basha tori............" I suspect it is Tagore (not sure though).

Tha lyrics in bold posted by Thirumaran are the very essence of the film's theme. So much so that I suspect Kamal's presence there (the cynical take on religious practices strengthens my suspicion).

Kamal has mentioned on stage that with Vaali lyrics were always a joint effort of the barinstorms between himself Vaali and IR. ("Avar dhaan ezuthuvaaru aana naanga ellAm sErndhu ezuthura maadhiri oru maayayai uruvaakkuvaaru" - a signature backhanded compliment).

The visuals, the scenario, the symbolism all come together and are paraphrased in the lyrics. So, with all due respect to Vaali, this was definitely a product of a scintillating collaboration.

Jokes apart, the powerful pronunciation sandwiched between paragraphs of the letter was a very clever idea.

The idea of the mixing the scenes of the lightness of liberation and the heaviness of parting is fantastic. Reading a letter is a very old idea in the history of movies so Kamal with the above presentation kept one gripped. You were almost mad at the protagonist who could write a brutally cold signature line like

"maama maami anaivarin saabamum enakkundena arivEn. avaRRilirundhu
meeLum arugathayum eNNamum enakkillai - anbilaa Sakethram."

The language in the letter reflected the Sanskritized Tamil writing style of the time and Saket's ethos. ("Enadhu dhurguNangaLin nizhaL vizhaamal un guNaprakaSham kaappaatratum"). Very very carefully chosen words : (Baratha maathavukku naan seyyappOgum sEvaikku sondha bandhanGaL idayooru aagaLaam ). I read a lot into this "aagalaam". The indefinite word "aagalaam" reflects the half heartedness of Saket's renunciation.

The only dip in the "song" is Hema Malini. I don't know what Hema Malini was going for here: a dispassionate voice of the levcel headed woman she plays ? perhaps, but I did find it unimpressive
