Q & A with Balaji Sakthivel

In many ways, Balaji Sakthivel is a trendsetter. His Kathal was a pathbreaking film, that created a new awareness internationally about Tamil cinema. The man has guts and determination to be daringly different. On the eve of the release of his new film Kaloori, the soft spoken Balaji opens up in an exclusive interview with sify.com.
Q. After Kathal it took you exactly two years to make your next film Kaloori, why this long gap?
It was not intentional, just happened as I was on the lookout for a good script which will appeal to me and my audiences.
Q. What is Kaloori about?
The film is set in a Government Arts College in a small town somewhere in Tamilnadu. The students and teachers of the college are ordinary lower middle class people. One day a girl from Bangalore, Shobhana with an urban upbringing due to certain factors join the college. Initially she finds it difficult to adjust to her new surroundings, but soon, she strikes a friendship with Muthuselvan and his merry gang. Muthu is a guy with a complex as he is coming from the lower strata of society and studied in a government school. Then there is Kayalvizhi a girl from a conservative background and how all these people bond and understand the meaning of friendship is what the film is about.
Q. You seem to have a fascination for small town stories?
(Laughs) Yes, I grew up in Dindigul which at that time was an overgrown village. There is lot of me in my films, and some of the characters you see are people I knew or met during my early days. In Kaloori, I have brought out all the fun, frolic, first love, complexes, petty jealousy, disappointments, ego problems and other issues that a small town person encounters during his college days.
Q. Are you more comfortable doing films with newcomers?
I decide my star cast only after I completed my final script and then try to find actors to suit the role. In Kaloori I think my casting has been perfect.
Q. How have your actors performed?
Super. Tamanna has given a knockout performance, and Hemalatha playing a very crucial and pivotal role is fantastic. All the boys including Akil will be liked by the audiences.
Q. But Joshua's music has not done well. Please comment
Let the film release and then the songs will rock, just like what happened to Kathal. The songs five of them are all situational and after one watches the movie it will linger in your mind more.
Q. The buzz is that Kaloori is going to be very similar to Kathal
No way. Kaloori is totally different in all aspects including narrative, screen play, story telling and presentation.
Q. What did your producer Shankar say after seeing the film?
After seeing Kaloori, he got up hugged me and said-" Balaji you have made another great film which our audiences are sure going to love." That made my day!

Yes she is tremendous even without excessive make-up like other heroines (im looking at a heroine), but the hero is blah.. im disappointed.. first with Ravikrishna and now with a debutant, lets see how this going to end up..

Joe,
I got your point. what I feel is : Saroja will be a commercial superhit. He knows how to reach out to the present generation. (He even informed about chennai 28 audio release date directly in yuvan orkut group. The team even requested few sites that support downloading of songs and that helped them to remove the download links).
So, he can market it well and if the product is good,c ertainly it will be a hit.

Not because of IR, after watching Chennai-28, I believe Venkat has interesting stuff to offer and can do it again. One more reason is Yuvan is there! Yuvan has good list of directors in his hands and Venkat proved in his first film and certainly he is promising and one among them now.

Yeah, the screenplay is very poor and the acting is bad. Couldn't sit through the film really. May be I'm exagerrating but this film is nowhere near a decent film.
The whole theatre was laughing during serious scenes. Still couldn't believe, this is the same director who gave 'Kaadhal'.
P.S: I didn't even go to home after coming from Bangalore, instead headed straight to Inox. Then you can imagine how eager I was.

Balaji Sakthivel asserts once again that he is a creative writer-director, who prefers to take the road less traveled. His latest Kaloori is an honest and heartwarming narration of college days in a small town with real down-to-earth characters and a stunning climax that leaves a lump in your throat.
Balaji has told a very straightforward and simple story with an ending straight out of a real life incident based on the now infamous 'Dharmapuri bus burning incident' where three young college girls were burnt alive by an angry political mob. Balaji has blended it well with the help of 10 talented new faces who simply are outstanding.
The story is told in a flashback, as some young people get ready to pay homage at a particular spot with flowers on a highway. Cut, to a Government Arts College in a small town somewhere in Tamilnadu, where a group of freshers studying for first year BA (History) bond. All of them studied together from their school days together Muthuchelvan( Akil), Ramesh, Kayal( Hemalatha), Salima and others are coming from poor homes and children of farmer, quarry worker, cobbler, auto driver, farm labourer etc. However there is a rich kid Shobhana (Tamanna) coming from an aristocratic family who had done her schooling at the elite Bishop Cotton in Bangalore who for certain reasons is studying in the same college.
The childhood friends soon strike a friendship with the upper caste and aloof Shobhana, after saving her from a ragging incident. The strong willed Kayal who comes from a family of five sisters has laid the moral code that they are all good friends and love should not develop between friends. However Shobhana slowly develops a soft corner for Muthu more out of sympathy, which leads to a situation where Kayal thinks that she is overstepping her limits. This leads to a piquant situation and the lovers suffer in silence and when matters are being sorted out, life takes an ugly situation.
Balaji's story is wafer thin; he uses a technique that he popularized in Kathal to strike a chord with the audiences, the socio-economic and the cultural differences between his protagonist and others to mime humour. The well educated and classy Shobhana calls her father 'daddy' and when others coming from rural Tamil background imitate that it becomes a laugh riot! The brothers in the college, arguing and saying "you first", a typical rural take that evokes laughter for others. There is definitely a Kathal hang-over from which the director cannot escape.
In a way Balaji has made a women's movie, with powerful characterization, and no make-up. The new girl Hema who has done the role of Kayal is absolutely realistic as she is able to convey the agony of her character, and the guy who does Ramesh is like any village "wanna-be smart cookie". Akil as Muthu is controlled and augers well for the future of Tamil cinema. However it is Tamanna as Shobhana who is the scene stealer in the films best etched role. Balaji has handled with great sensitivity her role and she has delivered a knock-out performance.
The camera of Chezhiyan gives the narrative its bleak and forlorn look necessary to tell the story. You can see that he has not used any artificial lights, which heightens the conflict, especially the crucial scene and song (Sariya idhu thavara…) to convey the blossoming love between the lead pair. Natural light breaking out from the overcast sky and the rain as sun plays hide and seek is beautifully etched against the college grounds. The art work of Mayilsamy gives it an authentic small town campus look. Joshua Sridhar's songs grow on you along with Na.Muthukumar's lyrics.
On the downside the film slows down and drags in the second half as Balaji has put a lot of scenes to highlight the impending doom by making it gloomier, probably aimed at the lady audiences. Does he feel a tragic ending in all his films helps it at the box-office? Anyway you can pass these off as the 'Balaji touches', as he should be given a pat on his back for encouraging new blood and making a different genre of films from the usual masalas.

Kaloori rocks,man!
I think it is going to be a superhit, if the audience reaction in the theatre is any indication.I saw in koyambedu rohini,and the audience cracked up at all the jokes.When the two girl characters fight first and dont talk to each other for a few days, then they make up and hug, the there is a huge applause in the theatre.After the climax there is a pindrop silence as they get up to leave.What more proof do you want?
The film has a simple storyline, but it is more of a slice-of-life of story of a group of students in a small town,semirural college studying B.A .History,(of all subjects) spanning across their college lfe.It is about the goings on in that college and at the end of it, if you feel you've just been to a college ,though a rural one, it surely shows the talent of the director.
I just hope someone makes a movie about urban college like what Balaji has done ,unlike what his "mentor" Shankar did with "Boys".where he portrayed all students like sexual perverts.
The director gets the mood and mileu just right, there are no clowning professors,where the students don't know a word of english because they are from tamil medium.
In the second half movie may slow down a wee bit, but by this time you care about the characters so much , you are worried about how things would turn out for the characters, and then the climax hits you like a sledgehammer.
But don't think, it is all sad and gloomy. it is 90% fun only in the climax it gets tragic.
The weak point is the music.The only song that sticks in mind is an 80's IR song played not in original version, but by a musical troupe in a marriage.
Kaloori is not a groundbreaking cinema.but it shows that
Tamil cinema is going in the right direction, if these people can take a recent isssue, and make it in to a commercial movie like they do in hollywood.There are seven or eight directors working right now, like Balaji Sakthivel,Selva ,Gowtham,Bala Amir, etc and I hope atleast one of them goes on to make a truly ,original movie!

Pls dont get away with various reviews !
Everybody told almost similar things after watching Kadhal initially.
Kallori is simply great !
Its a movie to be experienced !
Dont Miss it !
Almost whole theatres had smiles,laughther and tears thorughout the movie !
Its a (almost) real college, real students, real incidents !

‘காதல்’-ல் ஜெயித்த பாலாஜி சக்திவேல் மறுபடியும் ஜெயிக்க முடியுமா என்றால் ஜெயித்தவன் திரும்பத் திரும்ப ஜெயிக்க முடியும் உண்மையாக உழைத்தால் என்பதை நிரூபித்திருக்கிறார். சங்கர் எப்படிப்பட்ட இயக்குனர் என்பதில் கருத்து வேறுபாடு இருந்தாலும், ஒரு சிறந்த தயாரிப்பாளர் என்று சொல்வதில் எல்லோருக்கும் ஒத்த கருத்து தான் இருக்கவேண்டும்.

ஒரு நல்ல நட்பில் ஆரம்பித்து காதல் எப்பொழுது வந்தது என்று படத்தின் கதாபாத்திரத்திற்கும் தெரியாமல் படம் பார்க்கும் நமக்கும் தெரியாமல் காட்டியிருக்கும் திரைக்கதை மிக நேர்த்தி. படிப்பறிவே இல்லாத பெற்றோர்களிடம் Daddy என்று ஒவ்வொருவரும் கூப்பிட்டுப் பார்த்து கொள்வது இயல்பான அழகு. ஆனால் படிப்பறிவில்லாத பெற்றோர்கள், கல் உடைத்து அண்ணன் படிப்பிற்கு தன் படிப்பை தொடர முடியாத தங்கை, ஊதுபத்தி தயாரித்து அக்காவின் படிக்க வைக்கும் தங்கைகள், வேலை பார்த்து கொண்டே படிக்கும் பையன் இன்னும் இருக்கிறார்கள் என்று நினைத்தால் நாம் என்ன சாதித்து விட்டோம் என்று தோன்றுகிறது. வசதியுள்ளவனின் படிப்பு இவர்களின் கால் தூசுக்கும் சமமாகது.
முத்துவாக வரும் அகிலை கதாநாயகன், ஷோபனாவாக வரும் தமன்னாவை கதாநாயகி என்று சொல்ல முடியாமல் நடித்த அத்தனை மாணவ மாணவிகளும் கதாநாயகன் கதாநாயகி என்று சொல்லலும் அளவுக்கு அத்தனை திருப்தியான நடிப்பு, அதற்கு இயக்குனர் அருமையாக உழைத்திருக்கிறார். கேடி, வியாபாரி படத்தில் நடித்தாலும் மேக்கப் இல்லாமலோ அல்லது குறைவான மேக்கப்பில் அழகாக இருக்கும் தமன்னாவிற்கு இந்த படம் தான் அவருக்கு முதல் படம் என்று சொல்ல வேண்டும்.
எப்படி இருந்தாலும் இயல்புகளை படமாக பார்க்கும் போது ‘ஆபரேட்டர் படத்த போடு!’ என்று கத்தும் கூட்டமும் இருப்பது வருத்தமாக உள்ளது. ஏன் கூட வந்த நண்பர்களே அப்படி இருக்கும் போது ஒரு ஷோவின் அத்தனை டிக்கட்களை வாங்கிக் கொண்டு படத்தை தனியாக ரசித்திருக்க வேண்டும் என்று தோன்றியது. படத்தின் கடைசி பத்து நிமிடம் வரை கத்திக்கொண்டிருந்தவர் படத்தின் கிளைமாக்ஸில் அவர்களுக்கே தெரியாமல் அமைதியாகி விட்டார்கள். அப்படி என்ன கிளைமாக்ஸ்!!!? படத்தை பாருங்கள். நெஞ்சு பொறுக்குத்தில்லையே! இயக்குனர் இந்த கொடுமையான நிகழ்ச்சிக்கு பின்னால் எத்தனை எத்தனை பாசம், கஷ்டம், நட்பு, காதல் இருந்திருக்கும் என்று நினைத்து கதையை பலப்படுத்தியிருக்கிறார்.
இத்தனை பாசம், இத்தனை கஷ்டத்திலும் படிப்பு, இத்தனை நட்பு, இத்தனை கனவுகள், இத்தனை நட்பு, இத்தனை காதல் இவற்றையெல்லாம் ஒரு நொடிக்குள் தங்கள் சுயநலத்திற்காக பொடிப் பொடியாக்கும் கொடியவர்களுக்கு எப்படிப்பட்ட தண்டனை கொடுத்தாலும் பத்தாது. தங்கள் பிள்ளைகளுக்கோ தங்கள் உடன்பிறப்புகளுக்கோ இப்படி நடந்திருந்தால் எப்படி இருந்திருக்கும் என்று நினைத்து பார்த்து இந்த கொடியவர்கள் திருந்த வேண்டும். இந்த படம் அப்படிப்பட்ட மனித மிருங்களுக்கு ஒரு வாய்ப்பு கொடுத்திருக்கிறது.

+2 வில் சேர்ந்து படிக்கும் 9 நண்பர்கள்(4 பெண்கள்,5 ஆண்கள்) மதுரைக்கு அருகே உள்ள அரசு கலைக் கல்லூரியில் ஒன்றாக B.A வரலாறு பிரிவில் சேர்கிறார்கள்.அங்கு குடும்ப சூழ்நிலை காரணமாக டெல்லியில் படிக்க வேண்டிய பெண் (தமன்னா) தற்காலிகமாக அந்த கல்லூரியில் வந்து சேர்ந்துள்ளது.ஆரம்பத்தில் இவர்களோடு ஒட்டாமல் இருக்கும் அந்தப் பெண், ராகிங்கில் இருந்து காப்பாற்றியவுடன் இவர்களோடு நட்பு கொள்கிறது.நட்பின் காரணமாக டெல்லியில் இருந்து படிக்க வரும் வாய்ப்பையும் மறுக்கிறது.
"எங்களுக்குள் காதல் வராது , நட்பு மட்டுமே வாழ்க்கை முழுவதும் தொடரும்" என்ற நண்பர்களின் நம்பிக்கையையும், உறுதியையும் தகர்த்து அகிலிற்கும், தமன்னாவிற்கும் காதல் வருகிறது.

ஆதில*ட்சுமியாக வ*ரும் பெண், ச*ர*வ*ண*ணாக வ*ரும் பைய*ன் அகிலின் தங்கை, தமன்னாவை ஒரு தலையாக லவ் பன்னும் சீனியர் என அனைவ*ரும் நம் நினைவில் நிற்பார்க*ள்.
ஒரே காட்சியில்,9 மாண*வ*ர்க*ளின் குடும்ப க*ஷ்ட*ங்க*ளையும் உறுத்தாம*ல் காட்டியிருப்பது க*விதை.
இரட்டையர்களாக வந்து "ஏங்க நீங்க சொல்லுங்க? ஏன் நீங்க சொல்லக்கூடாதா" என்ற ஒரு டயலாக் மட்டும் வைத்துக் கொண்டு படம் முழுக்க வந்து நம்மை ரசிக்க வைத்திருக்கிறார்கள் இரண்டு பேர்.
பாலாஜி ச*க்திவேல் காட்சிக*ளால் க*விதை வ*டிக்கிறார் என்றால்,நா.முத்துக்குமார் க*விதைக*ளால் காட்சி அமைக்கிறார்.(ச*ரியா? த*வ*றா? பாட*ல் மிக*ச் சிற*ந்த* உதார*ண*ம்.)பாடல்கள் அத்தனையும் அருமை.
செழிய*னின் கேமரா இய*ல்பாக* உறுத்தாமல் எல்லாவற்றையும் ப*ட*ம் பிடித்துள்ள*து.
ஹைகோர்ட்டில் தூக்குத் த*ண்ட*ணை உறுதியாகி உள்ள* இந்த சூழ*லில், ஆந்திர* அர*சிய*ல் போல் காட்டினாலும் அந்த* ச*ம்பவ*த்தை அழுத்தமாக காட்டியுள்ளது இயக்குநரின் துணிச்சல்.(ஐயையோ கிளைமேக்ஸ சொல்லிட்டேனா???)
இவ்வளவு இருந்தும் படம் சற்று மெதுவாக நகர்வது போன்ற உணர்வு.படத்தில் சில காட்சிகள் திரும்பத் திரும்ப வருகின்றன.(உ.ம் க*ய*ல்விழி கோபிப்ப*து, இர*ட்டைய*ர்க*ள் காட்சி)
கதையும் ஏப்ரல் மாதத்தில்,பிரியாத வரம் வேண்டும் போன்ற* க*ல்லூரிக*ளில் பார்த்த*து தான்.(காத*ல் ப*ட*த்தில* ம*ட்டும் க*த* புதுசோ??)
ந*ம் உண*ர்ச்சிக*ளை வைத்து இவ*ர்க*ள் வியாபார*ம் செய்வ*து ம*ட்டும் நெருட*ல்.

saw the movie today in devi with huge crowd around ...obviously with whistles and claps the movie started off enthusiatically ...each and every scene looked very natural everything we could relate to our college days... each and every character naturally portrayed...esp a coll in a rural area... the movie had everything fun,very touching scenes<sometimes even shed tears so touching>,lovable scenes...the movie was going good all along until the climax came and spoilt the entire movie... after the climax ,it left audiences puzzled on what is being said with such a irrelavant ending...just then when u r enjoying the movie on friendship,love,college the climax makes u abs clueless ...it was something related to kalavaram and trying to convey some social message .... the whole impact of the movie is lost there...
tamana' is extremely cute and her role is most lovable and her eyes<esp when in tears>very adorable...she has got such an expressive eyes.. hero'ku acting'ae varala infact most of the characters acting was amateurish ...director is to be blamed for this....music was good in parts...second half screen play was little dull and sometimes looked plastic too..overall u can watch the movie just to go on a trip of nostaligia of ur college days and to cherish frienship

I don't have to portray a movie good or bad
. I didn't like the film for the following reasons.
# Weak screenplay. There are some good scenes but there is no connecting thread. I felt like watching the same scenes again and again.
# Nobody knows what is this film all about. Is it about love or friendship or college life. The film lacks focus.
# The direction is not upto the mark. (Ex: the scene where Tamanna tells why she didn't want to go to Delhi)
# Horrible climax. No need of such a climax for this film.

yes the direction...abs spot on ..i was just thinking of some scenes of his directional immaturity and u was spot on on this scene. it is suppose to be a very touching scene but screenplay made everybody laughing in theatre.

I think you've missed the whole point here.If you see some strangers being killed , you will be horrified, but it doesn't hit you on a personal level.Here, the director , makes you feel for them,like them, then when the climax happens ,it is almost like it happens to someone you know. and the effect is all the more forceful.

திருக்குறளில் ஆகச்சிறந்த கவிதை எது என்று நான் ஒருமுறை மறைந்த பேராசிரியர்ஜேசுதாசனிடம் கேட்டேன். ‘இரந்தும் உயிர்வாழ்தல் வேண்டின் பரந்து கெடுகஉலகியற்றியான்’ என்ற குறள்தான் என்றார்.
பத்து வருடங்களுக்கு முன்பு, இளைஞனான எனக்கு அது விந்தையாக இருந்தது. அருமையானஅணிகளும் சொல்லாட்சிகளும் உள்ள எத்தனையோ குறள்கள் இருக்க, உள்ளர்த்தங்களேஇல்லாத நேரடியான இந்த உணர்ச்சிவெளிப்பாட்டை ஏன் தெரிவுசெய்தார் பேராசிரியர்என்ற எண்ணம் ஏற்பட்டது.

பாலாஜி சக்திவேல்லின் ‘கல்லூரி’ கேளிக்கையை மட்டுமே அடிப்படை இலக்காகக் கொண்டதமிழ்த் திரையுலகில் வெளிப்பட்டிருக்கும் ஆழமான அறச்சீற்றத்தின் பதிவு.ஆகவேதான் இந்த எளிமையான, அடக்கமான, படம் எனக்கு ஒரு காவியமாகவே தெரிகிறது.மேலான கலை என்பது ஒருபோதும் உத்தி சார்ந்த அலட்டல் அல்ல, செயற்கையானஎடுப்புகளும் அல்ல. அது அடிபட்டவனின் வலி முனகல் போலவோ ஆனந்தக் கண்ணீரின்விம்மல் போலவோ இயல்பாக, தன்னிச்சையாக வெளிப்படுவது.
‘கல்லூரி’ இன்றுவரை நம் திரையுலகம் முன்வைத்துவந்த கல்லூரிகளில் இருந்து அதன்யதார்த்தம் காரணமாகவே வேறுபடுகிறது. உயர்தர உடையணிந்த விடலைகள் பளபளக்கும்இருசக்கர வண்டிகளை சாய்த்துவைத்து உலகையே நக்கல்செய்து திரியும் கல்லூரிகளையேநாம் கண்டிருக்கிறோம். காதல் அல்லாமல் வேறு விஷயமே நிகழாத இடங்கள் அவை. கல்உடைப்பவர்களின், பீடி சுற்றுபவர்களின், ஆட்டோ ஓட்டுபவர்களின்அரைப்பட்டினிப்பிள்ளைகள் படிக்கும் ஒரு கல்லூரி என்பது முப்பது வருடங்களுக்குமுன்னரே தமிழ்நாட்டில் ஒரு அன்றாட யதார்த்தமாக ஆகிவிட்டாலும் கூட இப்போதுதான்அது திரையில் முகம் காட்டுகிறது.
அந்தப் பிள்ளைகள் அவர்களின் துயரங்களால், ஓயாத போராட்டத்தால் ஒன்றாகச்சேர்வதும்அவர்கள் நடுவே உருவாகும் ஆழமான நட்பும் மிகுந்த நுட்பத்துடன்காட்சிப்பதிவாகியுள்ளது இந்த திரைப்படத்தில். அவர்கள் ஒருவரை ஒருவர்‘கலாய்ப்பதும்’ அவர்களின் ஊடல்களும் திரைப்படம் என்ற கலையின் அனைத்துவல்லமைகளும் வெளிப்பட சித்தரிக்கப்பட்டிருந்தமையால் உண்மையான வாழ்க்கையை கண்எதிரே பார்த்த பிரமிப்பும் நிறைவும் ஏற்படுகிறது.
கதாபாத்திரங்களுக்கு ஏற்ப முகங்களைத் தேர்வுசெய்ததில்தான் இப்படத்தின்முதல்பெருவெற்றி நிகழ்ந்திருக்கிறது. முத்து, ஆதிலெட்சுமி, கயல் போன்றகதாபாத்திரங்கள் மிக மிக யதார்த்தமாக இருக்கின்றன. படத்தில் ஒவ்வாமை அளிக்கும்ஒரு முகம் கூட வெளிப்படவில்லை. உழைத்து வாழும் எளிய முகங்கள் தொடர்ந்துவந்தபடியே இருப்பதை பரவசத்துடன் பார்த்தபோது இந்த சாதாரணமான விஷயத்தை எண்ணிஏங்கும்படி இருக்கிறதே தமிழ் திரையுலகு என்ற கசப்பும் ஏற்பட்டது. உதாரணமாககயலின் அப்பாவாக வருபவரின் அந்த முகம்! உழைத்து குடும்பத்தைகரையேற்றத்துடிக்கும் பாசமுள்ள ஒரு தந்தையின் அந்த இனிய சிரிப்பு! அதேபோலசலீமாவாக வரும் அந்தப்பெண். தென்தமிழ்நாட்டு மரைக்காயர் முகங்களுக்கே உரியகூறுகள் துலங்குகின்றன அதில்.
நடிப்பைக் கொண்டுவருவதிலும் பாலாஜி சக்திவேல் பெருவெற்றி பெற்றிருக்கிறார்.கல்லூரி முதல்வராக நடிப்பவரின் முகபாவனைகள் தவிர அனைத்து வெளிப்பாடுகளுமே மிகமிகக் கச்சிதமாக அமைந்துள்ளன. ஒரு பொம்மையாக மட்டுமே வரமுடியும் எனஎதிர்பார்க்கவைத்த கதாநாயகி கூட அற்புதமான மெய்ப்பாடுகளை வழங்கி மனம்நெகிழச்செய்கிறார்.
நமது கிராமப்புற கல்வி நிலையங்களில் இன்றுள்ள உண்மையான அடிப்படைச் சிக்கலேபடத்தின் மையக்கருவாகியுள்ளது.
கட்டுப்பெட்டித்தனமான நம் சமூகம் ஆணும் பெண்ணும்பழகுவதை அனுமதிக்காது. ஆனால் கல்வி நிறுவனங்களில் அதற்கான வாய்ப்புஏற்படுகிறது. ஆனால் அங்கே நட்பும் பாலியல் கவற்சியும் ஒன்றுடன் ஒன்று கலந்துஇனம்பிரிக்க முடியாதபடி சிடுக்குபட்டிருக்கின்றன. கல்லூரிகளில் நிகழும்பெண்சீண்டல்கள் அடிப்படையில் இச்சந்தர்ப்பத்தை எப்படி எதிர்கொள்வது என்றுதெரியாத இளைஞர்களின் வெளிப்பாடுகள். நம் திரைப்படங்கள் தொடர்ந்து பெண்ணைச்சீண்டி மட்டப்படுத்தும் கதாநாயகர்களை முன்வைத்து அவர்களுக்கு வழிகாட்டுகின்றன.ஆணுக்கும் பெண்ணுக்கும் இடையே காதல் மட்டுமே நிகழ முடியும் என்ற எண்ணத்தைமீண்டும் மீண்டும் அவை வலியுறுத்துகின்றன.
அதை மீறி இயல்பான நட்புடன் ஆணும் பெண்ணும் பழக முடியுமா என இளம் உள்ளங்கள் கனவுகாண்கின்றன. அவர்களை தடுப்பது இரு வல்லமைகள். ஒன்று எப்போதும் ஒழுக்கக்கட்டுப்பாட்டின் குண்டாந்தடியுடன் பார்க்கும் சமூகத்தின் கண்கள். இன்னொன்றுஅவர்களுக்குள்ளேயே எழும் இயல்பான பாலியல் இச்சை. அவ்விரண்டாலும் கடுமையானமனக்குழப்பத்துக்கும் குற்றவுணர்வுக்கும் ஆளாகிறார்கள் அவர்கள். நம்குழந்தைகளின் வளர்இளமைப்பருவத்தில் அவர்களை சுழற்றியடிக்கும் மையச்சிக்கலாக இதுவிளங்குகிறது

கடைசியில் தருமபுரி பேருந்து எரிப்பில் உச்சம் கொண்டு முடிகிறது படம்.துளித்துளியாக ஏழை மக்கள் உருவாக்கியெடுத்த கனவுகளை மூர்க்கமாகஅழித்துச்செல்கிறது வன்முறை அரசியலின் ஈவிரக்கமற்ற கை. ”கெடுக!” எனமூண்டெழும் ஓர் அடிவயிற்று ஆவேசம் தொனிக்க படமாக்கப்பட்டுள்ள இந்தக் காட்சிகளேதமிழ்திரையுலகின் மறக்கமுடியாத படங்களுள் ஒன்றாக இதை நிலைநிறுத்துகின்றன.

‘கல்லூரி’ உண்மையில் பலநூறு ஏழை உழைப்பாளிகளின் எதிர்காலம் குறித்த கனவுகளின்கூடமாக இந்நாவலில் காட்டப்பட்டுள்ளது. தங்கையை கல் உடைக்க அனுப்பி அண்ணாவைபடிக்க அனுப்பும் கல் உடைப்பவனின் கனவு. ஊதுவத்தி சுற்றி அக்காவை படிக்கஅனுப்பும் தங்கைகளின் கனவு. அவர்கள் படிக்கும் அந்த வரலாறு இளங்கலை அவர்களுக்குஎன்ன அளிக்கப்போகிறது? குண்டாந்தடிகளும் பெட்ரோலுமாக அலையும் அரசியல்வாதிகளிடம்அல்லவா இருக்கிறது அவர்களின் எதிர்காலம்?
செழியனின் ஒளிப்பதிவு இயல்பான ஒளியில் எடுக்கப்பட்டது என்ற எண்ணத்தைஉருவாக்கும் அளவுக்கு அழகும் இயல்பான தன்மையும் உடையதாக இருக்கிறது. இயற்கையானமழை இருளை படம்பிடித்திருப்பதும் சரி, கல் குவாரி சித்தரிப்பில் ஒளிப்பதிவுக்கோணங்களும் சரி நுட்பமாக உருவாக்கப்பட்டுள்ளன. ஆனால் உச்ச்சகட்ட காட்சி அதற்குதேவையான உழைப்பையும் பொருட்செலவையும் அளிக்காமல் எடுக்கப்பட்டது போலப் படுகிறது.

நல்ல படைப்பு அடிப்படையில் உண்மையான மனஎழுச்சிகளை ஒட்டி உருவாவது. எத்தனைதொழில்நுட்பச் சரிவுகள் இருந்தாலும் ஆத்மா பங்கப்படாதது. அவ்வகைப்பட்ட படம்‘கல்லூரி’. எளிமையையே வலிமையாகக் கொண்டது. செயற்கையான மன வக்கிரங்களுக்குப்பதிலாக நம்மைச்சுற்றி வாழும் வாழ்க்கையை நம்மைப் பார்கக்ச்செய்வது. ஒரு எளியசமூகம் தன்னைத்தானே பார்க்க, தன் வலிகளை தானே சொல்லிக்கொள்ள , முயல்வதன் விளைவுஇது வெற்றிபெற்றாக வேண்டியவை இவ்வகைப்பட படங்களே. இவற்றின் வெற்றியே நம்மைப்பற்றியபெருமிதத்துடன் நாம் மேலும் எதிர்பாக்கச் செய்யும். குறைகள் இருக்கின்றன,அவற்றை இப்படம் நூறுநாள் ஓடும்போது அம்மேடையிலேயே அலசவேண்டும்.

I think you've missed the whole point here.If you see some strangers being killed , you will be horrified, but it doesn't hit you on a personal level.Here, the director , makes you feel for them,like them, then when the climax happens ,it is almost like it happens to someone you know. and the effect is all the more forceful.
a dialoque comes in the end something like "#-andha bus'a kolluthi kallavaram panna makkaluku dhandanai kadaichadha #- illa pa avanungala vittutanga.. something similar to this and they will also show that people in court giving more importance. now y shd these scene comes .. its like the director wanting to convey some msg or like he is opposing pople who induulges in kalavaram bus koluthal and tjose peole r not punished etc<think avarum edho kalavarathula affect aagirupar ninaikiraen>... my question is y this msg has to be told in tis movie which has the main theme of friendship,kallori,love...there is also one more scene in the beginning of the movie of the same kalavaram affeceting common people lot of public damage burning bike hitting people romba perisa kaamchipanaga and people cursing them just like any shankar directed movie...adhulaye confirmed'a theriyudhu the director wanted to conevey some social msg taking kalavaram as the issue...which i thought was abs unnecessary in this movie..

Remember Titanic?obviously James Cameron wanted to show the sinking of the ship but If he showed just the sinking , it would get boring after a while.
So he invented the love story with a class difference, the hero as a peasant etc..so, the when you the see the sinking of the ship ,you will feel personally affected.
I see a strong parallel between Titanic and kaloori, in terms of the stroy telling technique.
BTW, why do you think, friendship is main theme,I think it is reverse.He uses the college life to talk about the kalavaram.

The works display the naive arrogance and blunt aesthetics of the creators. So it is essentially a judgement of the works.
And I wouldn't say he is gone completely crazy. I don't think either of the two movies deserved complete praise. They were appreciated as they came like a whiff of fresh air for us. They did not display the kind of completeness of a good literary works, which is what he is referring to.
2007 has been a decent year: Katradhu Thamizh, Chennai-28, Paruthiveeran, Mozhi, Veyil .... But all of these, with the possible exception of Chennai-28, only promise that forthcoming movies will be better.

Jayamohan only wrote the dialogues for Kasthooriman. The screenplay was still Lohitadas'. I am sure even Jayamohan would not think much of that film. I haven't seen it so I can't say anything about the quality of the dialogues. In an interview he said that he has written dialogues for three films (kasthoorimaan, Naan KadavuL and VasanthabAlan's next film) but still understands very little about the craft of filmmaking.
I remember on Kamal interview where he said how screenplay writing is an art to be properly taught and studied. It does not come automatically to writers, regardless of how clever they are. (sic) "Innikku ShakespearE vandhaalum, pOyi screenplay ezudha kathukittu dhaan thiraippadaththukku ezutha mudiyum....avar gettikkArar dhaan....aanaal idhu vERa kalai. paYiRchi avasiyam."

Guess this film would have a decent run in B & C. And I'm sure the budget of the film is not more than 2 crores. Shankar is a clever producer, I must say.

But all of these, with the possible exception of Chennai-28, only promise that forthcoming movies will be better.
I slightly disagree here. I still feel that some movies mentioned above have set ,quite an unhealthy path to the future.

I am not clear on this one. But whenever I read great literature works that have great resemblance with *story telling*, I feel that they form the nucleus of a screenplay and even with few hacks here and there a director can convert them neatly to the silverscreen format. Best e.g., would be kalki's works. I am not too sure whether his narration forms a perfect screenplay as I have little idea on that. But sometimes I feel that even if a director takes them *as it is* (the same sequence of events as perceived by himself and a basic understanding of how a normal viewer will visualize them on the big screen), they can become great works.
Just my thought : At any day, kalaki's "Sivagamiyin sabatham" will beat the screenplay of "Kaanchi thalaivan" by miles despite being a *historical novel with imaginary characters*. The intensity with which people perceive these two will be drastically different.
Here, the writer neatly defeats the screenplay writer
(correct me if I am wrong)
kalki's works have all what we can see in a modern screenplay (story narrated from different POVs, knots developed at the right places and revealed at the right time etc. Ippadi solli kittae pogalaam
So, we cannot generalize on that.
The poetic works of shakespeare might require different screenplays to adapt them neatly for the audience. Does someone write a different screenplay if they are conducting a theatrical play of his works ?
I am not too sure on that.

Selva I am not quite familiar with kalki except for one failed attempt to get past the initial chapters of his reputedly unputdownable Ponniyin Selvan. So I won't comment on that.
As you have put it beautifully:
(good story writing) form the nucleus of a screenplay. Just the nucleus. It needs a whole lot more than a "hack here and there" to get to a screenplay. To quote just one handicap is the inability to have a "He thought..." in a screenplay. Somewhat as a tradeoff you take away the reader's imagination of the people and places and "show" them. I am guessing this was partly what you meant by the differing intensity of reaction.
Screenplay is hopelessly event based. Novels cut you a lot of slack here.
Kuppusami naaNayamAnavar. The novelist can write those two words and move on. Just like that he can roll out an abstract concept like 'naaNayam', simply because the reader connects with the word and understands it.
The screenwriter will have to tear his hair out to get it into a movie. He can have a passerby say "Kuppusaami romba naaNayamAnavar" which will suck bad or he has to engineer sequences to demonstrate it (Kuppusami refusing a juicy bribe), without making it look thrust in. That is what I mean by saying it is "event based".
digr: I am ignoring the obvious Tamil film option of the title song where KUppusaami is garlanded and half the village dances and sings "nANayamAna nAyaganE....."
This is a traditional challenge, it may even be too dated now. There have been some which argue screenplays too need not be event-driven, but I find it hard to stay awake through them

Does someone write a different screenplay if they are conducting a theatrical play of his works ?
Perhaps not. But a movie is not a play. Here you can decide who/what you want to show. At what level of detail, register reactions etc. If you are feeling sacrilegious try voice-overingthe soliloqies etc. So Shakespeare will have some catching up to do.
In this context I'll recommend one my all time favourite films:
Adaptation. It is a film that tells the story of a screenwriter who tries to adapt a book which is based on real events. The 'events', the process of writing the book and the process of adapting it (or failing to adapt it) into a screenplay are narrated in a mindboggling style.

Tarantino in one of his interviews talks about how he was torn between becoming an author and making a movie. In fact, he was through half his first book when he switched to writing the 'Reservoir Dogs'. Most 'Hollywood' book adaptations try to get the writer to contribute to the screenplay, thereby retaining the vision of the writer in the final product. That sorely is lacking in our parts. If Kalki or Shakespeare were movie buffs, I don't think they would have a problem adapting their works to the screen.

There are some questions I like to ask about Jayamohan's opinions on PV/KT. Little bit busy here and will discuss later.
Balaji Sakthivel and Jayamohan are well known to each other. If I am not wrong, BS released couple of books of JM last year. That may be the reason for his soft-corner for BS and his movie.

If he has agreed and expressed atleast a few good points of PV/KT, his views would have not seen as biased. Not even one good thing happened to tamil film industry / to tamil movie fans from these movies or what??

Obviously it is his review and this review is about Kalloori, why unnecessarily bring PV/KT here? Why didn't he compare it with the director's previous films Samurai and Kathal? That would have been more appropriate. If PV+KT are indeed bad, why can't he just keep his opinions himself/write reviews of them separately and point out the flaws. I don't mind him criticizing PV/KT, but he should have done it separately.

He writes it seperately or not, that is his opinion about PV/KT. If he had compared these films with say "Mozhi", then you would have found new connections between Jayamohan and Radhamohan (their names are similar or something like that).

பாலாஜி சக்திவேல்லின் ‘கல்லூரி’ கேளிக்கையை மட்டுமே அடிப்படை இலக்காகக் கொண்டதமிழ்த் திரையுலகில் வெளிப்பட்டிருக்கும் ஆழமான அறச்சீற்றத்தின் பதிவு.ஆகவேதான் இந்த எளிமையான, அடக்கமான, படம் எனக்கு ஒரு காவியமாகவே தெரிகிறது.மேலான கலை என்பது ஒருபோதும் உத்தி சார்ந்த அலட்டல் அல்ல, செயற்கையானஎடுப்புகளும் அல்ல. அது அடிபட்டவனின் வலி முனகல் போலவோ ஆனந்தக் கண்ணீரின்விம்மல் போலவோ இயல்பாக, தன்னிச்சையாக வெளிப்படுவது.
‘கல்லூரி’ இன்றுவரை நம் திரையுலகம் முன்வைத்துவந்த கல்லூரிகளில் இருந்து அதன்யதார்த்தம் காரணமாகவே வேறுபடுகிறது. உயர்தர உடையணிந்த விடலைகள் பளபளக்கும்இருசக்கர வண்டிகளை சாய்த்துவைத்து உலகையே நக்கல்செய்து திரியும் கல்லூரிகளையேநாம் கண்டிருக்கிறோம். காதல் அல்லாமல் வேறு விஷயமே நிகழாத இடங்கள் அவை. கல்உடைப்பவர்களின், பீடி சுற்றுபவர்களின், ஆட்டோ ஓட்டுபவர்களின்அரைப்பட்டினிப்பிள்ளைகள் படிக்கும் ஒரு கல்லூரி என்பது முப்பது வருடங்களுக்குமுன்னரே தமிழ்நாட்டில் ஒரு அன்றாட யதார்த்தமாக ஆகிவிட்டாலும் கூட இப்போதுதான்அது திரையில் முகம் காட்டுகிறது.
அந்தப் பிள்ளைகள் அவர்களின் துயரங்களால், ஓயாத போராட்டத்தால் ஒன்றாகச்சேர்வதும்அவர்கள் நடுவே உருவாகும் ஆழமான நட்பும் மிகுந்த நுட்பத்துடன்காட்சிப்பதிவாகியுள்ளது இந்த திரைப்படத்தில். அவர்கள் ஒருவரை ஒருவர்‘கலாய்ப்பதும்’ அவர்களின் ஊடல்களும் திரைப்படம் என்ற கலையின் அனைத்துவல்லமைகளும் வெளிப்பட சித்தரிக்கப்பட்டிருந்தமையால் உண்மையான வாழ்க்கையை கண்எதிரே பார்த்த பிரமிப்பும் நிறைவும் ஏற்படுகிறது.
கதாபாத்திரங்களுக்கு ஏற்ப முகங்களைத் தேர்வுசெய்ததில்தான் இப்படத்தின்முதல்பெருவெற்றி நிகழ்ந்திருக்கிறது. முத்து, ஆதிலெட்சுமி, கயல் போன்றகதாபாத்திரங்கள் மிக மிக யதார்த்தமாக இருக்கின்றன. படத்தில் ஒவ்வாமை அளிக்கும்ஒரு முகம் கூட வெளிப்படவில்லை. உழைத்து வாழும் எளிய முகங்கள் தொடர்ந்துவந்தபடியே இருப்பதை பரவசத்துடன் பார்த்தபோது இந்த சாதாரணமான விஷயத்தை எண்ணிஏங்கும்படி இருக்கிறதே தமிழ் திரையுலகு என்ற கசப்பும் ஏற்பட்டது. உதாரணமாககயலின் அப்பாவாக வருபவரின் அந்த முகம்! உழைத்து குடும்பத்தைகரையேற்றத்துடிக்கும் பாசமுள்ள ஒரு தந்தையின் அந்த இனிய சிரிப்பு! அதேபோலசலீமாவாக வரும் அந்தப்பெண். தென்தமிழ்நாட்டு மரைக்காயர் முகங்களுக்கே உரியகூறுகள் துலங்குகின்றன அதில்.
நடிப்பைக் கொண்டுவருவதிலும் பாலாஜி சக்திவேல் பெருவெற்றி பெற்றிருக்கிறார்.கல்லூரி முதல்வராக நடிப்பவரின் முகபாவனைகள் தவிர அனைத்து வெளிப்பாடுகளுமே மிகமிகக் கச்சிதமாக அமைந்துள்ளன. ஒரு பொம்மையாக மட்டுமே வரமுடியும் எனஎதிர்பார்க்கவைத்த கதாநாயகி கூட அற்புதமான மெய்ப்பாடுகளை வழங்கி மனம்நெகிழச்செய்கிறார்.
நமது கிராமப்புற கல்வி நிலையங்களில் இன்றுள்ள உண்மையான அடிப்படைச் சிக்கலேபடத்தின் மையக்கருவாகியுள்ளது.
கட்டுப்பெட்டித்தனமான நம் சமூகம் ஆணும் பெண்ணும்பழகுவதை அனுமதிக்காது. ஆனால் கல்வி நிறுவனங்களில் அதற்கான வாய்ப்புஏற்படுகிறது. ஆனால் அங்கே நட்பும் பாலியல் கவற்சியும் ஒன்றுடன் ஒன்று கலந்துஇனம்பிரிக்க முடியாதபடி சிடுக்குபட்டிருக்கின்றன. கல்லூரிகளில் நிகழும்பெண்சீண்டல்கள் அடிப்படையில் இச்சந்தர்ப்பத்தை எப்படி எதிர்கொள்வது என்றுதெரியாத இளைஞர்களின் வெளிப்பாடுகள். நம் திரைப்படங்கள் தொடர்ந்து பெண்ணைச்சீண்டி மட்டப்படுத்தும் கதாநாயகர்களை முன்வைத்து அவர்களுக்கு வழிகாட்டுகின்றன.ஆணுக்கும் பெண்ணுக்கும் இடையே காதல் மட்டுமே நிகழ முடியும் என்ற எண்ணத்தைமீண்டும் மீண்டும் அவை வலியுறுத்துகின்றன.
அதை மீறி இயல்பான நட்புடன் ஆணும் பெண்ணும் பழக முடியுமா என இளம் உள்ளங்கள் கனவுகாண்கின்றன. அவர்களை தடுப்பது இரு வல்லமைகள். ஒன்று எப்போதும் ஒழுக்கக்கட்டுப்பாட்டின் குண்டாந்தடியுடன் பார்க்கும் சமூகத்தின் கண்கள். இன்னொன்றுஅவர்களுக்குள்ளேயே எழும் இயல்பான பாலியல் இச்சை. அவ்விரண்டாலும் கடுமையானமனக்குழப்பத்துக்கும் குற்றவுணர்வுக்கும் ஆளாகிறார்கள் அவர்கள். நம்குழந்தைகளின் வளர்இளமைப்பருவத்தில் அவர்களை சுழற்றியடிக்கும் மையச்சிக்கலாக இதுவிளங்குகிறது
மிக நேர்மையுடனும் கவித்துவத்துடனும் அதை கலையாக்கியிருக்கிறார் பாலாஜிசக்திவேல். அவ்விளைஞர் குழுவுக்குள் உள்ள இயல்பான நட்பும் அதில் இருவர் அவர்களைமீறி காதல் கொள்ளும்போது ஏற்படும் உக்கிரமான குற்றவுணர்வும் அதனுடன் அவர்கள்நிகழ்த்தும் போராட்டமும் உணர்ச்சிகரமான தருணங்கள் மூலம் வெளிப்படுகின்றன.படத்தில் இளைஞர்களின் போராட்டம் என்பது எந்த புறச்சக்தியுடனும் அல்ல தங்கள்அகமன அலைகளுடன் மட்டுமே என்பது இப்படத்தின் மிக நுட்பமான சிறப்பம்சம்.
கடைசியில் தருமபுரி பேருந்து எரிப்பில் உச்சம் கொண்டு முடிகிறது படம்.துளித்துளியாக ஏழை மக்கள் உருவாக்கியெடுத்த கனவுகளை மூர்க்கமாகஅழித்துச்செல்கிறது வன்முறை அரசியலின் ஈவிரக்கமற்ற கை. ”கெடுக!” எனமூண்டெழும் ஓர் அடிவயிற்று ஆவேசம் தொனிக்க படமாக்கப்பட்டுள்ள இந்தக் காட்சிகளேதமிழ்திரையுலகின் மறக்கமுடியாத படங்களுள் ஒன்றாக இதை நிலைநிறுத்துகின்றன.
எத்தனையோ மௌன அர்த்தங்கள் கோண்டது இக்காட்சி. சிராய்ப்புகளுடனும் கண்ணிருடனும்கனவுகளுடனும் அவ்விளநெஞ்சங்கள் நாளை வெளிச்சென்று எதிர்கொள்ள தங்களைதயாரித்தபடி இருக்கும் புறவுலகம் எப்படிப்பட்டது? அவர்கள் பேணும் மலரசைவுபோன்றமெல்லிய உணர்வுகளுக்கும் தவிப்புகளுக்கும் அங்கு என்ன இடம்? அக்கனவுகளை ஈசல்சிறகுகள் போல உதிர்த்துவிட்டுத்தான் குண்டாந்தடிகளுடன் அலையும் மனிதர்களின்சூழலுக்கு அவர்கள் வந்துசேர வேண்டுமா?
‘கல்லூரி’ உண்மையில் பலநூறு ஏழை உழைப்பாளிகளின் எதிர்காலம் குறித்த கனவுகளின்கூடமாக இந்நாவலில் காட்டப்பட்டுள்ளது. தங்கையை கல் உடைக்க அனுப்பி அண்ணாவைபடிக்க அனுப்பும் கல் உடைப்பவனின் கனவு. ஊதுவத்தி சுற்றி அக்காவை படிக்கஅனுப்பும் தங்கைகளின் கனவு. அவர்கள் படிக்கும் அந்த வரலாறு இளங்கலை அவர்களுக்குஎன்ன அளிக்கப்போகிறது? குண்டாந்தடிகளும் பெட்ரோலுமாக அலையும் அரசியல்வாதிகளிடம்அல்லவா இருக்கிறது அவர்களின் எதிர்காலம்?
செழியனின் ஒளிப்பதிவு இயல்பான ஒளியில் எடுக்கப்பட்டது என்ற எண்ணத்தைஉருவாக்கும் அளவுக்கு அழகும் இயல்பான தன்மையும் உடையதாக இருக்கிறது. இயற்கையானமழை இருளை படம்பிடித்திருப்பதும் சரி, கல் குவாரி சித்தரிப்பில் ஒளிப்பதிவுக்கோணங்களும் சரி நுட்பமாக உருவாக்கப்பட்டுள்ளன. ஆனால் உச்ச்சகட்ட காட்சி அதற்குதேவையான உழைப்பையும் பொருட்செலவையும் அளிக்காமல் எடுக்கப்பட்டது போலப் படுகிறது.
சென்ற சில மாதங்களாக ஆழமான மன இக்கட்டில் இருந்தேன். என் நுண்ணுணர்வைஅவமானப்படுத்தி எரிச்சலூட்டிய சில படங்கள், ‘பருத்தி வீரன்’ ‘கற்றது தமிழ்’போன்றவை, ஊடகங்களால் பெரும் படங்களாக முன்வைக்கப்பட்டமைதான் காரணம். ஹாலிவுட்படங்களை நோக்கி பிரதிசெய்த ஒளிப்பதிவு மற்றும் படத்தொகுப்பு உத்திகளைஎந்தவிதமான கலைநுட்பமும் இல்லாமல் அசட்டுத்தனமான மிகையுடன் தோன்றியவிதமெல்லாம்கையாண்டு எடுக்கப்பட்ட இலக்கற்ற முதிரா முயற்சிகள் அவை. அவற்றின்இயக்குநர்களின் அசட்டு ஆணவமும் கலை மொண்ணைத்தனமும் மட்டுமே வெளிப்படுபவை. அவைபோன்ற படங்கள் கொண்டாடப்படும் ஒரு சூழல் காலப்போக்கில் தன் கலைமனத்தையே இழக்கநேரும் என்றே நான் அஞ்சினேன்.
நல்ல படைப்பு அடிப்படையில் உண்மையான மனஎழுச்சிகளை ஒட்டி உருவாவது. எத்தனைதொழில்நுட்பச் சரிவுகள் இருந்தாலும் ஆத்மா பங்கப்படாதது. அவ்வகைப்பட்ட படம்‘கல்லூரி’. எளிமையையே வலிமையாகக் கொண்டது. செயற்கையான மன வக்கிரங்களுக்குப்பதிலாக நம்மைச்சுற்றி வாழும் வாழ்க்கையை நம்மைப் பார்கக்ச்செய்வது. ஒரு எளியசமூகம் தன்னைத்தானே பார்க்க, தன் வலிகளை தானே சொல்லிக்கொள்ள , முயல்வதன் விளைவுஇது வெற்றிபெற்றாக வேண்டியவை இவ்வகைப்பட படங்களே. இவற்றின் வெற்றியே நம்மைப்பற்றியபெருமிதத்துடன் நாம் மேலும் எதிர்பாக்கச் செய்யும். குறைகள் இருக்கின்றன,அவற்றை இப்படம் நூறுநாள் ஓடும்போது அம்மேடையிலேயே அலசவேண்டும்.
முன் குறிப்பு: படம் பர்க்கவில்லைஎனினும் இந்த விமர்சனம் படம் பார்ப்பதற்கான ஆவலை தூண்டியிருக்கும் அதே நேரம், விமரசனத்தின் மீதான எதிர்வினையாக மட்டுமே இதை எழுதுகிறேன்.
தங்களின் அறசீற்றம் குறித்த பதிவினை கண்டு உள்ளம் உவகை கொள்கின்றது. இந்த அறசீற்றத்தை இவ்வளவு நாட்களாய் எங்கு ஒளித்து அல்லது ஒழித்து வைத்திருந்தீர்கள் என்று தெரியாமல் மனம் சற்றே தடுமாறுகிறது. ஆயினும் நாம் விஷயத்திற்கு வருவோம்!
எந்த வித படாடோபங்களும் அன்றி எளிமையாய் இருப்பதால் மட்டுமே திரை படங்கள் காவிய நிலையை எட்டி விடும் ஆயின் அப்படிப்பட்ட நிறைய படங்கள் வந்த வண்ணம் இருக்கின்றன. ஆனால் உங்கள் உணர்வெழுச்சி இந்த எளிமையினால் அல்ல படம் எடுத்து வைக்கும் அரசியல் விமர்சனம் மூலமாகவே நீங்கள் பெற்று கொண்டீர்கள் என கோடிட்டு காட்டி விட்டீர்கள். எனவே படம் காட்டும் எளிமையான வண்ணங்களுக்குள் நுழையாமல் நேரடியாய் ‘கல்லூரி’ நம் முகம் நோக்கி வீசியெறியும் கேள்விகளை எதிர் கொள்வோம்.
தர்மபுரி பஸ் எரிப்பு சம்பவம் மீதான தார்மிக ஆவேசமே திரைக்கதையின் நோக்கம் என்றான பின் அம்முடிவை, அல்லது அதை பற்றிய விவாத தளங்களுக்கு நம்மை இட்டு செல்வதற்கு வேறு வழியே இல்லையா? அதை 8 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு பின்னால் ஒரு திரைப்படம் எடுத்து தான் நமக்கு ‘சொரணை’ வரவழைக்க வேண்டுமா? அதை அவர் ‘சாமுராய்’ எடுத்த போதே ஒரு குறும்படமாக எடுத்து வீதிதோறும் அரங்கேற்றியிருக்கலாமே? அல்லது மாணவர்களை ஒரு குழுவாக்கி இவ்வரசியல் வாதிகளுக்கு எதிராக ஒரு கண்டன ஆர்பாட்டமாவது நிகழ்த்தி இருக்கலாமே? இதை எல்லாம் விட்டு விட்டு இத்தனை ஆண்டுகளுக்கு பின்னர் இதை ஒரு திரை படமாக எடுத்து தமிழ் திரை வரலாற்றில் பதிவு செய்கிறார் என்றால், அதில் உள்ள வியாபார உத்திகளையும் உள் நோக்கங்களையும் நாம் கவனிக்க வேண்டி உள்ளது!
திரை வியாபாரத்தின் உச்ச பட்ச பிதாமகர்களான மணிரத்னம், ஷங்கர் வகையறாக்களின் ‘பட்ஜெட்’ குறைக்கப்பட்டு எளிமையான வடிவம் தான் பாலாஜி சக்திவேல் போன்றோர். சமூகத்தில் நிகழ்ந்த அல்ல நிகழ்ந்து கொண்டிருக்கும் எதோ ஒரு பிரச்சனையை எடுத்து வைத்து கொண்டு அதை சுற்றி ஒரு கதை பின்னி, பிரச்சனையின் வீர்யத்தை நீர்க்க செய்து கடைசி காட்சியில் நீங்கள் குடுத்த காசுக்கு இரண்டு சொட்டு கண்ணீரை உவர்ந்து விட்டு செல்லுங்கள் அல்லது பிரச்சனைகளை தீர்க்க ஒரு அதி மனிதன் இருக்கிறான், அவனை பற்றிய கனவுகளை எடுத்து செல்லுங்கள் என நம் காலில் விழாத குறையாய் நம்மிடம் கதறுபவர்கள் இவர்கள். ஆயினும் இந்த படம் உங்கள் ஆவேசத்தை கிளறி விட்டுஇருக்கிறது! சரி என்ன செய்தீர்கள்? 100 வது நாள் வரை காத்திருந்த மேலும் இதை பற்றி பேசலாம் என்று முடிவு எடுத்து இருகிறீர்கள்! திரை படம் என்பதின் வீச்சு அவ்வளவே. சரியான அரசியல் பாடங்கள் மற்றும் அறம் சார்ந்த கேள்விகளுக்கு திரை அரங்கின் வெளியே தான் விடை தேட வேண்டி இருக்கும், தேடுவோம்!

I beg to differ. Sundara Ramasamy is the best IMO. I stay away from JM just for the thalayani size books. I have read his essays, athuve chumma pakkam pakkama pogum.

Ofcourse Sura is Jayamohan's guru (Though they had personal difference later) ,but Sura is no more ,so I mentioned only current trend.

The problem with SR, JM etc., are they include subtle political criticism in their novel's which i differ with always. While people like yuma.vasuki, s.ramakrishnan, konangi (not even one book of his i've completed except the short story collection 'Pattuppochigal urangum moondram jaamam' ) stay close to fiction and magic

ராஜாசரணம் உங்கள் எதிர்வினையின் சாரம் திரைப்படம் என்ற கலைவடிவத்தின் நோக்கம் பற்றியது. கொடுத்த காசுக்கு உணர்ச்சியை எழுப்பும் படங்களையும் அவற்றைப் படைப்பவர்களையும் கடுமையாகவே விமர்சித்திருந்தீர்கள். கலையின் நோக்கம் நெகிழ்ச்சியா, இல்லை அதையும் தாண்டியா என்ற வாதம் - ஆங்கிலத்தில் சொல்வது போல - மலைகளை போல பழமையானது. அதில் இப்போது நான் இறங்க விரும்பவில்லை.
படம் பார்த்த ஒரு ஹப்பர், சில பக்கங்களுக்கு முன், இறுதிக்காட்சியில் கோரச்சம்பவத்தை அருகிலிருந்து பார்த்ததுபோல உணர்ந்ததாக எழுதினார். நமக்கு பரிச்சயமான/நெருக்கமான நபர்களுக்கு நடந்தது போல இருந்ததாகவும் ஒருவர் எழுதினார். இதை விட கலைஞனிடம் எனக்கு எந்த எதிர்பார்ப்பும் இல்லை.
மிகைஉணர்ச்சியையும் / அடிதடியையும் திரையில் கண்டு மரத்துப் போன நம்மை எல்லாம் கதைக்களத்துக்கு இட்டுக் சென்று 'உணர' வைப்பதே பெரிய சாதனை.
பருத்திவீரன் திரைப்படத்தில் என்னைக் கவர்ந்தது இது தான். "சாதியை விட விசுவாசம் முக்கியம், வன்முறையாளனின் சுற்றமும் அழியும்", என்ற நீதிபோதானைகள் அல்ல.
உங்கள் வெறுப்பு 'உணர்ச்சி-வியாபாரத்தின்' மீதா, அல்லது பொதுவாக வியாபாரத்தின் மீதா என்றே சில இடங்களில் சந்தேகம் வருகிறது.
பொதுவாகவே நமது சூழலில் ஏனோ வியாபாரம், நுகர்வு, பணம், தன்னலம் எல்லாம் தீஞ்சொற்கள் ஆக்கப்பட்டு விட்டன. பணம் வாங்கிக்கொண்டு வேலை செய்வது என்பதை நீசமான செயல் போலவும், பணம் கலக்காத பொதுநல(!) வேலை செய்பவர்கள் உயர்ந்தவர்கள்.
இந்த அசட்டு பொதுச்சிந்தனையில் நடிகர்கள் அதிகம் அடிபடுவதுண்டு. பெருந்தொகைகள் சம்பாதிப்பவர்கள். அதனாலேயே அவர்கள் சுரண்டல்காரர்கள். அதனால் அவர்கள் பணத்தை எப்படி செலவழிக்கவேண்டும் என்றெல்லாம் கூச்சமில்லாமல் எதிர்பார்க்கிறோம். நஷ்டமடைந்த விநியோகஸ்தர்களுக்கு பணத்தைத் திருப்பித தருவது, வெள்ளத்தில் வீடிழ்ந்தவர்களுக்கு வீட்டு கட்டித் தருவது போன்ற எதிர்பார்ப்புகள் வருகின்றன. அதுவே நியாயத்தின், நேர்மையின்(!) அளவுகோள்களாக்கப் படுகின்றன. சமீபத்தில் ஒரு பிரமுகர் (சீமான் என்று நினைக்கிறேன், சரியாக நினைவு இல்லை), "நடிகர்களுக்கு மக்கள் பிரதிநிதிகள் போன்ற பொறுப்பு இருக்கிறது என்றார்"
அவர்களிடம் இருப்பது 'மக்கள் பணம்' போன்ற நகைச்சுவையான வாதங்கள் எல்லாம் வரும்.
இவ்வளவு பிழையான அடிப்படைகளை நாம் வைத்துக்கொண்டு இருந்தால் பிறகு நடிகர்களின் அரசியல் பிரவேசத்தில் ஆச்சர்யப்பட என்ன இருக்கிறது. அவர்களை (கலைஞர்களை) வியாபாரிகளாக மதித்து (நான் சொல்லுவது நிஜமான 'மதித்து'!), கொடுத்த காசுக்கு தரமான படம் கிடைக்கிறதா என்று நிர்ணயிப்பதே முக்கியம்.
நல்ல படம் என்றால் அவர்கள் நிகழ்த்திய உணர்ச்சி சுரண்டல்களை மீறி இது போன்ற விவாத தளங்களில் அலசப்படும். நம் சிந்தனையில் தங்கும்.

I dont have any problems in their mark system. i think its based not on their perception, but judging on what was the reason behind and the end result of the cinema. ATM as a commercial movie deserves 40 and 9RN as a social drama deserves 42 is their take, is what i believe. i wouldn't have found it difficult to digest, if ATM had 2 marks more than 9RN, for if ATM was a well packaged Commercial movie and 9RN was a badly made drama. Its the movie that counts not the theme of the movie. Now that ATM is 2 marks lesser than 9RN we know that ATM is a worser movie than 9RN.
and may be Kalloori is better made movie than 9RN.

I think kalki gives a good review.
He was the only mag who dared to criticise avvai shanmughi & even went to the extent of blaming the censor board resulting in exchange of letters between the censor board & kalki & finally a reply by kamal.

Yes Roshan, BR nailed it about PV, about 'sensationalism' instead of 'sensitivity' in films which such pretensions. But I think there's a good point to be made here. Desensitizing such insensitive moments could have been a plus, if only Ameer had made such a film (not to mention his interviews).

எந்த விதத்திலும் அவன் நம் பரிதாபத்துக்கு அருகதை அற்றவன். பெண்ணுடல் மீதான ஆதிக்கத்தை தீவிரமான காதல் என்ற பெயரில் தமிழ் சினிமாவில் காட்டிக்கொண்டிருக்கிறோம் என்று ரோஷன் சொல்கிறாரே அது போல தான். மாறி மாறி வரும் அவனது முரட்டுத்தனத்தையும் தாங்கிக்கொண்டு , திக்கற்ற குழந்தையாய் அவன் அழும்பொழுது அவன் குடிகார-சத்தியங்களை நம்பிக் கொண்டிருக்கும் அவந மனைவியிடம் அல்லவா பரிதாபம் வர வேண்டும் ?

Finally finished watching kalloori. Its just an OK movie. I would not call the movie as a dud. Minuses first:
- The hero. He can't act for Gods sakes. Actually his character was way too complex and he was supposed to show different emotions with very minimal dialogs. He was pathetic especially when tamanna sings un paarvayil. That was an excellent scene totally spoiled by that guy.
- At least 30% of the scenes were amateurish and made me wonder if its from BS. Examples:
--Shobana rejecting the birla offer and the friendship had just blossomed. I would have split the june july song into two and in the middle of it shown the Birla institute scene. Would have perfectly fit the bill :P
--The scene after muthu wins the all India meet, the meet with the principal. Amateurish to the core.
-Kayalvizhi. Her character was poorly written eventhough she is able to substantiate why is she like *that* in the last but one scene. I mean the way she behaves after Muthu's injury was absolutely stupid and her opinions forming the core of the story was dumb. She was an irritating specimen. Whining malcontent
-The climax. WTF was that?? It came out of nowhere. PV's climax worked because there was a connection with a few other scenes in the movie. One of the dumbest climaxes ever.
-Characterizations. In kAdhal each and every character was carefully written and comparing that with kalloori is blasphemy I would say.
The plusses
+Tamanna! I have never seen her before this movie and she did not impress me in the first 30 minutes or so. But at the end of the day I had to change my opinion. She was terrific. She emotes really well.
+Ramesh. That guy was darn funny. The senior guy was extremely funny as well. Did not enjoy the *comedy-twins* as much.
+Realism - 70% of the scenes. We can watch the movie ONLY for this aspect. Of course not as realistic as kaadhal which was 100% realistic, no movie can even come close to it
+The acting. Except the hero of course
+Screenplay, except a few scenes. Was tight I thought.
Overall: Kalloori is not even half as good as kAdhal but you can watch it for the realistic portrayal of a Govt. Arts college.

I called this film as a dud because of the towering disappointment. Realised later that the movie is not as bad as I said.

Thats the problem. I made up my mind that I should not expect another kAdhal while watching this and you bet that helped immensely! But the movie is definitely watchable once if you fast forward a few scenes

Widespread opinion sought by the director and the production house seems to have revealed that the viewers are disgruntled with the heart-wrenching climax scene. Result? Balaji Sakthivel has decided to respond to the criticisms on his film positively. He has changed the climax of his film 'Kallori' following some critical comments from the media.
The climax has a gruesome incident in which the bus with three girls was burnt by the goons of a political party in protest of a setback to their leader. The climax scene reminds the infamous Dharmapuri incident in which three girl students were burnt alive along with the bus. The climax also has a court scene following the incident.
Now that the verdict on the Dharmapuri incident has come out, some felt that the court scene becomes irrelevant. Some critics pointed out that the way the girls caught into the bus was not established well in the film.
Balaji has gone through the suggestions carefully and decided to change the climax. He has included a couple of shots to show the girls getting caught. He has also removed the court scene. “Now the climax looks more convincing”, says the director.
Meanwhile, he has denied the reports suggestion that he is doing a film for director Lingusamy. “I have been receiving many offers. Shankar sir too has told me to begin a new project. I am yet to decide anything. First I must make the story ready”, Balaji told IndiaGlitz.
'Kallori', produced by Shankar’s 'S' Pictures, has hit the screens on December 7 and has been receiving moderate response all over Tamil Nadu. While it does well in A centers, it is yet to pick up the momentum in B and C centers. “The film will pick up during Christmas holidays”, said Balaji with confidence.

I meant to say these days, tamil movies and Indian movies in general lack substance, so I don't watch anymore. Not that I've never seen tamil/indian movies, even 80s RK/KH movies were good. They don't make movies like that anymore.

Kalloori is an extraordinary film! Kudos to Shankar for gving opportunities to new faces like Balaji!
Kalloori is easily the BEST film of the year, along with Mozhi and Evano Oruvan. PKMC, PV, Chennai 28, etc add up to a real exciting year for Tamil cinema.
it takes huge courage to feature a completely new cast - all of them plain janes and joes - and that too without any make-up.
no stupid fight scenes, no separate comedy track, even the songs are unobtrusive.
Balaji takes his time to tell the story - this is not your usual wham-bam-thank you mam kind of story. Almost all characters are gven good scope.
It is a story of friendship - the real one, not plastic friendship that is so common in films.
Kalloori tells the story behind each kids difficuties in gaining an education. No preaching - the lesson is shown beautifully visually. I guess there can be no dry eye when lead girl visits lead guy's village. Not only she, but we the audience face the stark cruelty. No emotions, just pure visuals.
yes, you can call Kalloori a love story (arent they all) but just when you expect one of the normal two climaxes, Balaji gives you an unexpected twist in the climax. As they say in Bond movies, "happenstance." Just a chance encounter!
there is one glaring error in the story tho; no responsible elder will leave students on thier own, especially when there is turmoil.
Kalloori, a film based on a page from YOUR life!

Agreed NOV..Kallori was a brilliant movie..I have watched it twice alredy..The movie had me in tears for so many scenes..I never really cried watching a movie but kallori made me cry..DAMN..I fail to understand why some ppl are bashing the movie to the max..As for the climax,i watched it wit an open heart and mind..It tells us that life is full of uncertainties and we need to be prepared to face harsh realities of life..The movie was so realistic(the romance, fights among frens etc)...The emotions were very powerful in the movie esp the scenes involving kayal n shobana..The delicate intimacy between the tammy n akhil was brilliantly captured by BS( i thought maniratnam was the best when it comes to capturing fine emotions but looks like mani has a close competitor)...
Casting tamanna was a masterstroke by BS..No one could have done justice to that role which was etched wit sensitivity..No matter how the KAllori fares at the BO, tamanna is definitely moving into the big league (if im not mistaken, avm has already sign her up opposite surya!!)
Its sad to hear that Kallori is slowly sinking at the BO..Kallori will join the list of brilliant movies such as tamizh ma, evano oruvan etc that failed at the BO..WIth movies like Vel, pollathavan etc becoming super hits, the future of tamil cinema looks bleak..Only God can save tamil cinema..

as I was walking out the cinema, ppl I didnt know were commenting abt the film to me - all of us agreed that it was a wonderful film.
Tamil cinema in 2007 brings solid rays of hope for me as we really saw quite a number of bold attempts, regardless of success at the BO.
forgot to add a couple more ie, Katradhu Thamizh and Satham Podathe to my original list. I am very happy

கல்லூரி படத்தை கடந்த வாரம் (இணையத்தின் புண்ணியத்தில்) கண்டேன். படத்தில் வருவது போன்ற கல்லூரியில் (கிராமம் சார்ந்த பகுதியில் அமைந்த, இருபாலர் மற்றும் கிராமப்புற மாணவர்கள் நிறைந்த ) படித்ததாலோ என்னவோ படத்துடன் ஒன்றி பார்க்க முடிந்தது. கல்லூரி நாட்களுக்கு சென்று வந்தேன் என்ரால் மிகையாகாது. படம் பார்த்த அன்று தூக்கம் கலைன்து நெடு நேரம் விழித்திருந்தேன். படம் பற்றிய சிந்தனை. அன்றே படம் பற்றிய என் கருத்துக்களை பதிவு செய்ய நினைத்தேன். சில நாட்கள் அசை போட்டு பின்னர் எழுதுவேன். அருமையான படம்! இயக்குனர் இன்னும் கவனம் செலுத்தி இருந்தால் இந்த ஆண்டின் மிக சிறந்த படமாக தெரிவு செய்யப் பட்டிருக்ககூடிய வாய்ப்புகள் இருந்திருக்கும்.
அகில் பொருத்தமான தேர்வு. கிராமப்புற மாணவனுக்கே உரிய முக வெட்டு. (னிஜத்திலும் நான் நல்ல அத்லெட் - இந்த வார ஆனந்த விகடநில் அகில் கூறி இருப்பது).
தமன்னா வெளியூரில் இருந்து படிக்க வரும் மாணவியாக வந்து மனதை அள்ளிக் கொள்கிறார். இறுதி காட்சிகளில் தேன்மொழியிடம் தன் மனதை கொட்டி அழும் போது மனதை கனக்க வைக்கிறார்.
அந்த இரட்டையர் நகைச்சுவையில் படத்தில் எல்லோரும் சிரிக்கிறார்கள். எனக்கு ஆத்திரமே மிஞ்சியது.

கிராமப் புறங்களில் பெற்றோர்கள் தங்கள் பிள்ளைகளை கல்லூரிக்கு அனுப்ப என்ன மாதிரியான தியாகங்களை செய்கிறார்கள், அதனால் என்னென்ன கஷ்டங்களுக்கு தள்ளப்படுகிறார்கள் என்று காட்டுகிற விதம் அருமை!
படத்தில் கதாநாயகி (தமன்னா) சக மாணவ/மாணவிகளுக்கு ஆங்கிலம் பேச ஊக்குவிக்கும் விதம், நம்மை போன்றவர்களின் நினைவுகளின் பின்னேடுகள்! இதை சக மாணவி தன் கிராம பாணியில் கற்பனை செய்து பார்த்து 'டாடியோவ்' என்று அழைப்பது மிகவும் எதார்த்தம்!
கதாநாயகன் (அகில்) படத்தில் முத்து-வாக வாழ்ந்து காட்டியிருக்கிறார்! தன் காதலை மனம்விட்டு வெளியில் சொல்லும் முன்னே காதலி பேருந்து எரிப்பில் மரணம் அடைவது தாங்கமுடியாத வேதனை! இந்த காட்சியை பார்த்தவுடன் 'மூன்றாம் பிறவி' படத்தின் கடைசி காட்சியில் கமல் குனமடைந்த ஸ்ரீதேவி எந்த நேரமும் புறப்பட இருக்கும் ரயிலின் உள்ளே அமர்ந்து போகும்போது, கமலின் ஏமாற்றம் நம்மை பாதித்த விதம்போல இருந்தது!

when they show natural characters or life its good to show some nativity but the slang, thats becoming an irritating factor. in movies like paruthi veeran and kalloori, there are times i cudnt get what they are saying!
slang varies at different places but showing that too deep and serious each and everywhere, slightly encourages and indirectly tells them to stay with that slang, which is very wrong, unifying the way of speaking is important and NOT justyfying whatever they are doing.
otherwise, in kamal films slang was not a barrier for me in understanding the converses...(except irritating Nala Damayanti)

I really enjoyed this movie and is definitely among the best of 2007!
The entire cast performed very well. Tamanna is the highlight of the movie - she acted very well...I especially liked her in scenes where she was getting upset at her friends...

Even though the ending was a sad shocker, it was good (I wasn't as upset as I was when i watched Paruthiveeran).

Wonderful Movie ! Balaji shakthivel's Best movie
i like this movie more than Kadhal, this movie is better than Kadhal, i don like the "script" of Kadhal, but the way he presented was impression.

as everyone said, i was not expected that Climax, but why that climax needed. whether he tries to tell something "Message" , or he wants some "sad" ending..

India already being a country split apart by languages.....atleast states in north are integrated by hindi. infact, hindi and sanskrit words are throughout widespread in north, in all languages like oriya, assamesse, ect...as it comes more and more south, the sanskrit \hindi content goes well down..tamilnadu and kerala has zero hindi content, apart from metros. these 2 states really stays slightly apart from the rest

Seriously the climax pissed me off....It was a ver big boew indeed....I went to the movie with my cousins...too good the two hours were,so light hearted,no beating up,no flying,no dance and the whole bunch of school guys entering college together,a dram for any high school gang.Anyways lets get the reviewing done..
Cast & crew:Thamanna was infact the highlight of the movie,simply because she was the only known figure in the movie.the cast was perfect,everyone did their job,espeially the guy who played ramesh fantastic!The girl who played kalaichelvi was also good.The two guys simply irritated me never giggled actually.The English prof was too good though just in few scenes.Even the grandparents o thamanna played their rles with ease.....very very real.The P.T master was also remarkable.Another good find by Balaji sakthivel following Joshua and sandhya was this guy akhil carryin the movie's feel.The scene where he watches at her in the bus stand from behind,he was stunning.I dunno what the makeup man did the hero looks better in TV shows.Music was extraordinary.Yet another good albm with all numbers being murmured,my personal favourite was Sariya ithu thavara....haricharan's year it is truely.The senior who tried to impress thamanna cold have been better,but his friend who makes an odd noise was more than perfect!
Plot:Nowhere could i see any clarity from the director,which is the biggest minus.The climax confirms it all.What does he want to convey?The vivatha arangam oration,thamanna giving shoes,bus stand stuff,pre-climax scene everything seriously confuse.....so it should only be love between a girl/guy not friendship?huh....god knows!
Points to ponder:The songs were all filmed in the same fashion.....something missing cos they were no filmed for the songmscenes from the movie indeed....very disappointing video presentation!
It didn't carry any strong message though dealing with a social issue.......
It didnot have anything special except realism to be pointed out and applauded....

venkiraja,every scene in kallori was meticulously done..If you say BS has no clarity, it doesnt make sense..Actually the story kallori is not about 'friendship or love' thingy..It captures the life of a group of friends..their joy..trial and tribulations..emotions...Thats it!Dont confuse urself by thinking wat the director is trying to convey...And about the bus stop scenes, tamana giving shoes scene etc..its a classic example on how sympathy slowly grew into affection and finally blossom into love..
AS for the climax, i seriously think the climax was on his mind before he even wrote the script n screenplay...I guess the bus burning incident had really affected him..Who knows the 3 girls who died 7 years ago shared the same joy..trial and tribulations..emotions..

i loved this film...the ending ws very much neccesary...the starting of the film prepares us for that...its nt a gimmick by the director.. i think Balaji sakthivel is a really good director..nw with Kaadhal n Kalluri, he is one of the best in current generxn..

yeah... i saw the paper add, saying that they are going to re-release very soon in coimbatore because of students request.... its a clear indication that pongal releases are not that much good as far as profits are concerned

I'm the one who called this movie a dud. I expected a lot from Balaji Sakthivel a lot after his Kaadhal, but this film failed to meet my expectations.

thamizh films have that ability to move people. right from sivaji films of the 60s to many others including kamal's films. recently i watched devar magan again. despite having seen it so many times, when sivaji's grand-children begin singing pOtri paadadi kannE and massaging his body, my eyes began to well up.
it is really crazy how those people onscreen have the ability to test our emotions.
as for kalloori, i enjoyed every scene as the director took his time to tell the story. two scenes particularly were touching - one was the scene where tamanna will go to the village - the visuals were simply astounding! the other scene was towards the end when hema reveals her love to tamana. i am getting goosebumps even now....

The hero's story was THE best and there were flashes of brilliance throughout.. But the unbelievably amateurish handling of the subject was a turn-off.. It was like watching an 80s movie..

There were plenty of scenes. I don't remember much but let me give you a couple:
1. Tamanna rejecting the Birla offer and their friendship is just days old. The same Tamanna who was all tears for the past few days.. The same Tamanna whose only wish is to study there
They should have inserted that scene after building a strong friendship-foundation..
2. The scenes after the athletic meet with the principal
It was like a scene flicked out of a 3rd rated serial.. Very amateurish.
I rate kAdhal as one of the top 10 tamil films EVER. kAdhal director's next film, you may not know how much was I expecting that film. I tried my best to actually *like* the film, but I could not

Not only that ..After she came back home and her asked her grandmother about the persons in photos ..her grandmother proudly says Judge ,Police officer etc etc ..in backgroud she was thinking about the hero's family background ,how contrast it is.. It shows not only the guilty feeling of the heroine ,but we also must feel that How much opertunity we got while many people are still in bad condition ,reflecting socio - economic inbalance of our soceity.

Most of the people in the *hub* hate PV's climax. For me it worked because it had a connection with the other scenes in the movie.. But kalloori's climax was very poor

I agree with those 2 scenes you mentioned... They were cinematic but definitely not amateurish... Added to that I have couple of other items on my "wish list" for this movie:
1.Why does the hero has to think that loving a girl within their friends circle is an insult/betrayal to the friendship?
Balaji Shakthivel didn't give proper reasoning for this philosophy...
2. The ending of the movie where the lead lady plus couple of other friends getting killed in a riot leaves a "blank thought" about the climax/ending of the movie. the ending made me wonder so what's the message/theme of the movie? Though I don't see this a flaw or escapism and could just be viewed like "as is" narration of events - I could still not help to think whether BS could have thought of a much more creative ending!
But otherwise overall the movie was good...
It was a very good documentary movie, IMHO. I really appreciate the more realistic/down-to-earth/"as is" film-making approach from BS that was seen through out the movie... Except for couple of *unexplained" motives overall Kaloori was close to yet another class act from BS!

I too agreed few scenes are bit ameturish by Balaji's calibre ..Those didn't make me to get disappointed ..I thoroughly enjoyed the movie ,never ever get boared.
Regarding Climax ,as you said Balaji should have it in mind even before he wrote the screen play ..Ofcourse ,He wanted to tell .. கனவுகள் ,நட்பு ,மகிழ்ச்சி ,நெகிழ்ச்சி -யோடு சென்று கொண்டிருந்த மாணவர்கள் காரணமே இல்லாமல் ,தாங்கள் சம்மந்தப்படாத ஒன்றின் காரணமாக ,திடீரென்று தங்கள் உயிரையே இழக்கின்ற கொடுமை நம் சமுதாய அமைப்பில் இருக்கிறது .
இதிலே தீர்வோ ,பாடமோ ,முடிவோ இல்லை ..சமுதாய அபத்தத்தை ,இந்த வலியை உணராத சமூகத்தின் பொற்றுப்பின்மையை குறிப்பது மட்டுமே நோக்கம் ..(அது ஒன்றும் கற்பனையல்லவே ..நடந்தது தானே .. அந்த உண்மை சம்பவத்தில் இறந்த மாணவிகளுக்கும் இத்தகைய பின் -வாழ்க்கை இருந்திருக்கலாம் ..அவர்களை நினைத்து நான் ஒரு சொட்டு கண்ணீர் விட்டேன் .. வலிந்து திணிக்கப்படும் எந்த தீர்வையும் ,திருப்பத்தையும் விட இந்த கண்ணீர் பயனுள்ளது ..தேவையானது)

Thamiz and Joe, I can totally relate the climax and the *real* incident and the innocent people who lost their lives.
My point is, the central theme of the movie is about friendship and Love and the climax tell us not to indulge in anti-social activities. I don't see a connection at all!

Yes it reminded me while wathcing it thamizh! But the shift from friendship/love to a *riots* sequence was too sudden! Being a person with a taste for discerning movies (albeit with exceptions like enjoying MGR's & SRK's movies
) - I definitely don't see this ending as a flaw! I was just wondering could there been a better creative twist to the climax! But yeah throwing that social brutality/tradgedy into the mix is a suprising twist in itself!

I agree that there is no connection.
How about looking at "hero's" perspective?
He just learnt that she has been loving him for a while but he could not talk to her after he learnt that!

My angle is ..The central theme of the movie is not just about friendship and love ..It is the otherway ..

.........Kalloori ending is "yadartham" (though its becoming irritating nowadays in Tamil) .........
we still feel, movie has to have a story, opening, pre-interval shocks, post-interval punch and a hyped-up climax...........the little i gathered from french/italian movies - they just depict a sequence of events from life.....it starts abruptly and ends abruptly - but leaves a great effect on us.......i think our new tamil directors are doing lot of rounds in euro film festivals
joe, perfect point on social imbalance......wat KT director Raam tried to convey in 3 hrs , BS has conveyed in couple of scenes
........thamizh, kaadhal ending is perfect, i myself have seen couple of guys spoiling their lives/careers in name of louuuu
.......enakkku love-nna allergy-a aaiduchhu bcos of such incidents
