If you hear MGR songs It will looks like MGR Voice. If you hear sivaji songs It will looks like Shivaji voice. In high pitch songs TMS is the Best(IMO). Enge nimmadhi......., Andha naal yabaham nenjile vandhdhe.... chakkai podu podu Raja..... in those songs TMS was amazing(here I have mentioned only few songs). In duet, solo,Sad songs His voice is amazing. Where as Balu has soft voice. he is not good in high pitch songs compared with TMS. |

Nice point karthik. But another reason greater than the above is for SPB i.e., even ARR and next came MDs couldn't reject SPB due to his wonderful voice. Note that TMS was rejected by IR and other MDs followed. |

But I don't know why my heart goes with SPB .The reason is simple ..'Versatile'..Man SPB can sing any kind of songs . Some singers are fit for only few types of songs .when you think about graceful voice ,KJ Jesudas comes in your mind. KJ Jesudas is the best for melody type of songs ..But still SPB sung numerous melody songs ..I mean ,even SPB cannot match with KJ Jesudas in melody and karnatic based songs ,still SPB gave that kind of songs in his own style ..Still he is comparable ..But when it comes to fast based songs ,songs with fun and laugh ,KJ Jesudas surely can't come near SPB ..That is my humble ipinion. Take this song .."kattukkuyilu manasukkulla" from Thalapathi sung by both KJ and SPB ...no offence ..SPB steal the song from KJ. My conclusion is SPB can match 90% of typical KJ type songs. KJ can match only 70% of typical SPB songs. I can't imagine How it will be if KJ sing songs like 'Rakkamma kaiyya thattu' ,'Ilamai itho ithoo' ,'Poopoota thavani' etc. But SPB has given 'Nilave Vaa' ,which is nothing less than KJ standard. I am comparing SPB with KJY instead of TMS ,since TMS belongs to different generation. TMS also capable of all sorts of songs ..from 'malanthum malaratha' marvellous medlody to dappankuththu 'Adi ennadi rakkamma'..But for me SPB has slight edge. |

The title says SPB vs TMS, but here discussions going on here about SPB vs KJY.
I THINK COMPARISON OF SPB WITH KJY IS SUITABLE HERE, because TMS belongs to previous generation. No doubt he is a legend in Tamil songs, but now his tone is not suitable for any of the present actors. He is genious in voice modulations suitable to MGR, Sivaji, Jaishanker, Ravichandran and even for Nagesh (nobody can forget the songs 'avalukenna azahgiya mugam' and 'muthu kulikka vaarigalaa'). But now he is away from Tamil movies. But both SPB and KJY are in same period and still singing. Their voice also suitable for present actors. So comparing TMS with SPB is itself an un-digestable one. Several persons who posted here openly declared that they did not hear TMS songs. Then how it will be proper discussion?. So it is better discuss about SPB and KJY here. It is my humble openio |

Kartik,
Totally agree with you..I am also glad that atleast now some people come to know the greatness of TMS. Just now I watched 'Chandramuki' function on SUN tv in which TMS was honoured by Sivaji Productions ..They even telecasted clips from songs 'Iravinil attam' (Navarathiri) and 'Antha naal Gnapagam' .. I feel happy to see TMS was honoured. I am not that old ,people may assume (Just because I am huge sivaji fan) .Basically I born and brought up in village(in TN) ,where people always listen Srilankan Radio from morning to night ..In early 80's ,when I was a school boy ,TV has not reached my home ..so my closest friend was Srilanka Radio ..Nobody can beat Srilankan radio in broadcast songs as collection of some meaning and uniqueness..So basically I brought up with mostly TMS songs and MGR,Sivaji movies. |

In this thread ,I mentioned my choice is SPB ,even though I am a huge fan of TMS too .But you claim that 'Paatum nane' by SPB in his 'Padaatha Paadalgal' thoguppu is better than the original is simply intolerable ..This is just a different try ,but no way comparable to the original by TMS . TMS has that Simmakural to Match with Nadigar Thilagam's simmakural ,also fit with the character sivaperuman. |
