Was Gilli really a blockbuster?

Did anybody notice these anomalies?

Sify.com declared within two weeks that Gilli was a bigger hit than Samy. But we never saw any poster or heard any announcement about silver jubilee celebration.

Now a year later, tamilcinema.com says Gilli ran for 15 weeks only.

Also thatstamil.com says Madhure, Attagasam and Thirupachi were all small hits playing 8 weeks only. They also said Autograph was the only film that celebrated silver jubilee in 2004.

Anyway Crab,

Gilli was a blockbuster, but not just collection wise. Actually Gilli grossed a lot around the world, especially in the U.S.

- It's audio celebrated platinum jubliee
- The did have simple celebrations, not as grand as Saamy
- Appadi Podu song set standards

All these factors influenced Gilli being a blockbuster!

How is it Dharani's film if it is a remake film?

Anyway, I agree with Rachel in that the makers spent a lot of money of this film so it wasn't as profitable as it COULD have been. I mean, some of the effects and settings were not necessary. It was the story and the acting that mattered, and everything was excellent in that aspect. However, the exact setting, the unbelievable stunts, the fireworks...these did not add to the movie or its success and were totally superfluous.

But either way, the movie offered 3 hours of pure, non-demanding masala fun!

In Chennai, Gilli collected Rs1.06 crores in 35 days i.e. Rs3.02 lacs per day.

Remember, Ji collected Rs20.4 lacs within first 3 days in Chennai!

Gilli collected only Rs21 crores, then it is like Manmadhan - hit but no earnings!

It means Gilli is an average grosser only - typical like all other Vijay films.

Even the film New(Rs12 lacs) got a bigger opening than Gilli(Rs10 lacs)!

Distributors say New did better business than Gilli which was average grosser despite the heavy marketing hype.

Dear Crab, just because you are a fan of Ajith, don't try to make a flop of a super hit movie !

It is not only because of Vijay, but there was the excellent job of Dharani in it too !! (no need to mention the acting of Prakashraj).

in fact dhool is the movie which ran for 175 days in 2003, and Dharani said himself that gilli was a better hit than dhool !!

Haven't you got used to this? This is what happens all the time. Thala fans are desperate and try to bring down Vijay movies, even if they are blockbusters and likewise do Vijay fans. However, there is a limit to all this. Discussing what made Gilli a success and stuff is not going to change anything...the fact of the matter is that THE MOVIE WAS A BLOCKBUSTER! Rachel, please grow up. Vijay gave the blockbuster "Ghilli," despite you saying that Prakash Raj and Dharani were a part of it. Look, I am not going to be like you and say that ONLY Vijay was responsible for the success of the film. I'm not that psychotic about him! I know that equally there were others that need to be given credit, but he is the hero and the pulling force at the box office. Vijay's screen presence definitely helped the film and it clicked, so just deal with it. If Ajith fans can survive Ajith's recent long string of flop movies and Vijay's hits, then I think Vijay and his fans can take on hit from you thala. You and fellow thala fans will go crazy, I know, but keep in mind, you started it with your immature nasty comment about Vijay fans committing suicide. Cinema isn't life to get that worked up about, Rachel!

I am pained to see ajith fans fighting with vijay fans continuously. Let us face facts.

As of today, Vijay's films are more successfull at the box office. Ajith's films of late - Ji, Jana, anjaneya, raja, citizen, red have all been flops. Even his attagasam was only an average hit. He badly needs a hit.

I feel the reason for all this is ajith himself. He was dividing his time between racing & films & as a result he was neither here nor there. He needs to choose his scripts with care. Hope Godfather will do the trick for him. if this film also does not click, then it is tough times ahead for ajith b'cos there is lot of competition what with vikram & surya also in the race.

As for vijay, his luck at the box office has come to a halt with sachin. Even his flms before thirumalai were flops.

Both Ajith & vijay needs to notice one thing. In the new year releases everyone was only talking about MX v/s CM. No one really bothered about sachien.

Seems like kamal & rajini still call the shots.

So, U guys wait for some more time & then start your fight.
