Ilavattam
To me, though 'Satham Varamal' is tempting to be chosen for its high class jazzy arrangement, 'Ilavattam' seems to be like a lesson in a Text book for 2 reasons.
1) The opening drum beat followed by chorus humming for few secs is beatifully demonstrated in the interlude as counter point.
2) The symphonic orchestration in the other interlude using voilins is mind blowing...

My choice "Ilavattam", ...the part where SJ goes "pooppol pooppol pooppaa.."... amazing bass guitar/drums/chorus sync..! Where the hell in this world did that IR go..!

Could not choose between iLavattam, satham varaamal and uttAlakkadi. Voted for uttAlaKKadi simply because you guys are not so fond of it - deserves better recognition!!
Good pick sanjeevi.

kingvj, I share your grief. Somebody please show this album to IR to remind him of his glorious magic he created with real instruments and great voiCe of SPB. I voted for "paaku vethalai" for its infectious upbeat mood esp with SPB's effortless singing. I had to veto out "iLavattam" for no reason except it being more popular than my choice. I had to eliminate "satham varaamal" ONLY due to Mano factor. These 3 songs are among my top IR favourites as they are marked with splendid drums[ Shivamani??] , brass/trumpets and guitar.
I sometimes feel Rahman got inspired from that spanish guitar piece from "satham varaamal" for his "july maadham vandhaal"

Please post the links for songs too.
This would increase the hit rate for the thread and poll.
I wont say 'my dear marthandan' songs were amongst the 'my best list'.
I feel I might like "ilavattam" (as much as I remember)
However, I shall listen to all songs and vote.
herez the link to listen

Okei herez my choice
* 'Paakku vethalai': Heavy beats alone is worth a clap or two. Starts off with grand tempo
and falls down, failing to keep up the interest. BG and interludes reminds me vaguely
of too many other songs.
* 'aaduthu paar'!: Would have been different decades back cause of creative technology which
might have seemed new then. Good! nothing more.
* 'kalyaana mapillaikku' : Starts with EXCELLENT bg, and heavy beats, but fails to keep up the
tempo! Claims grand score for BG
* 'My dear marthaanda" : cute. interesting. Catchy bit song!
* 'Saththam varaamal' : Interludes Dreamy. Grand
"hava navala raani
huva huvala meni
poovaa poovula theni
love-a love la vaa nee
raaNi....theni.....vaani"
alone is enough to win votes for this song. Vaguely reminds us of a hindi song tune
As we observe this song too is no less with heavy beat as background score. The whole movie
has heavy beats and its refreshing !
That final bit of Interlude which takes us back to pallavi too good!
* 'iLavattam kai thattum tum tum':
Intro fast beat reminds me of thalapathi's "kattuk kuyilu"
Tough competation between 'ilavattam' and 'saththam illaamal',
Both songs are mildly romantic, whereas ilavattam is bit more on peppy side.
Beautiful inter-weave of western tune and classical raaga
It says 'kural vannam konjattam "kalyani"'
Second Interlude is a show stealer(what is that instrument which sounds like jalatharangam? )
* 'Utalakkadi' : Makes me grin and actually laugh after a while
Grand
Yes this DESERVES a vote and thanks to Nerd Had 'Nerd' not voted, May be I would have voted for this song, as its sad that such a cute number did not receive even a SINGLE vote!
No real reason. BG or interludes or instruments used in this song is not as promising as other songs. But still I love this song.
May be cause tune is refreshing that we actually laugh
before we finish listening to the entire song
Catchy tune and laughter is contageous !
* "oh azhagu nilavu"
yes songs reminds me of
"oh azhagu nilavu ulagai" (in its diff mood)
and also
"en kanmani pani thuli un kannila"
is typical copy of
"nee vaadinaal vanna poo vaadume" from 'naan vaazha vaippen'!
Therez some kinda 'life' in sad songs and thats the reason it crowns above
most songs in most cases, despite the fact its not new or reminds us of
many other pathos scores in various albums.
"ninaithaal inimai thaan
nadanthaal arumai thaan
ninaive...ninaivile...vizhiyile ezhuthadi"
too good ! BEYOND words Scores way above others, cause of its
'JEEVAN'
'ninaive vilagidu
ninaithaal vilai kudu
urave...uravile...urugiye...ezhuthadi'
Finally.....
* "Oh maharaja...aana aavana...iina...iiyanna...
hey yuvaraja....uunna uvanna....enna...eyanna
un kathalile... "
'Varaverppom! ho! ho! ho!
Varavendum ho! ho! ho! ho!'
Somehow this song places me before Jesus-christ altar in a nice quiet church. Sounds like a carol tune
(may be had this song received a vote, I would have had tough time choosing between "oh azhagu nilavu" / "ilavattam" / "sattham varaamal" / "utalakkadi" )
Its annoying that such a cute song did not receive EVEN A SINGLE vote
Cheerful tune, which is catchy n simple even for a CHILD to sing.
"I vote for the bit song "oh maharaja"
