I think this is the series where Kohli will leapfrog over Raina, Yuvi, Badri, Pujara and establish himself in the Indian Test team.
Which probably means one of Lax/Rahul will have to retire by this year to accomodate the rising star.
Badri - his marathi wife can now say "engAthukkArum katcherikku pOnAr". Atleast, the tour serves that purpose
Raina - I hope he doesnt breakdown before the test series. Or maybe hope he does - looks like he wont have a decent break unless he actually breaks down now. Along with Dhoni, the most over worked Indian Cricketer of recent times
Mukund - Dont think he is a great prospect. A test cap or two will be a high point in his career. Ejnoy while it lasts
M Vijay - already ODI and T20 international careerku sangoodhiyAchu. This is probably where his test career dies a natural death. RIP.

YouTube.com to telecast India West Indies cricket series
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In an exciting new development, Ten Cricket announced that it will be streaming the forthcoming India – West Indies Cricket series LIVE on YouTube.com. The series, which kicks off on June 4 with a T20 game, is expected to generate a great deal of excitement amongst Cricket fans worldwide, and the partnership between Ten Cricket and YouTube will make the entire series available on the Internet – both in Live and On-demand formats. Apart from the actual series, a whole range of video packages would be made available to the fans. What’s more, the videos will be streamed to the users in the quality that suit their respective bandwidths.
Speaking on the tie-up, Atul Pande (CEO – TEN Sports) said, “We have always been at the forefront when it comes to embracing newer technologies and distribution platforms. In fact, the first time we streamed our channel (Ten Sports) live on Internet was way back in 2009 during the Compaq Cup Cricket tournament. The response we received from fans was so overwhelming that we were further spurred in our desire to focus on the Internet as a viable distribution platform for our content. I have no doubt that Cricket fans will enjoy the viewing experience that will be brought to them through our partnership with YouTube.”
The India – West Indies Cricket series starts with the lone T20 match on June 4 and will be followed by 5 One-day Internationals and 3 Test Matches.

14.4 Harbhajan Singh to Edwards, 1 run, dropped by Parthiv, and then by Badri. Harbhajan lands this well outside leg, and Edward nicks the flick onto Parthiv's pad, who fails to hold on. It deflects and flies towards Badri at leg slip, who also can't pouch it.
15.3 Mishra to Sarwan, no run, nervous times for the Windies. Has Parthiv fluffed a stumping here? Mishra lulls Sarwan out with a classic legbreak, that loops in and goes away. Parthiv fails to collect as Sarwan's back foot comes out for a moment as he over-balancess
looks like parthiv is carrying his form from the ipl.

17.6 Mishra to Edwards, 1 run, poor effort from Harbhajan at midwicket. Edwards has no idea what Mishra is up to. This one was tossed well up in leg stump, and Edwards approaches it as if he is checking if there's a snake under a toppled basket. He plays an awry whip and the leading edge balloons up. Harbhajan runs back, but doesn't move fast enough and can't get his hands to it as it drops over his right shoulder.
18.2 Harbhajan Singh to Edwards, OUT, and Edwards' woes against spin have come to an end. He's scarcely read a ball today from the tweakers. Harbhajan lands the floater short of a length, Edwards leans back and looks to play for the offbreak, and ends up top-edging a pulled whip that lobs up and lands in Kohli's hand at slip. Poor, poor shot.
KA Edwards c Kohli b Harbhajan Singh 21 (45b 1x4 0x6) SR: 46.66

one more from parthiv,
32.1 Raina to Sarwan, no run, big appeal for lbw but Sarwan escapes. Fullish on off stump and turning in, Sarwan missed the flick and was hit on the pad. Looked adjacent, but the umpire thought otherwise. Sars was outside the crease, but Parthiv missed a potential stumping. He's having a horror day.

Sammy: "We put ourselves in a good position but we didn't capitalise in the end. We were about 30 runs short. We rotated the strike better today, but we didn't get one of the top batsmen to bat through. We were on the back foot in the latter part of the overs, losing wickets at regular intervals. The intent from the batsmen was good initially. Samuels has been out for a while, but we saw how well he was batting. Sarwan is also stablising the middle order for us. We can't fault the effort of the bowlers, they've been doing their job.
Hopefully, In Antigua, we'll have a better surface for us to play our style of cricket."

Badri is 30 years old. He don't have much time to prove himself. I am not saying that he can't play ODI's but right now he can target only the test spot as the seniors awaiting retirement. More over when we reassemble as an old team Badri can fit himself only in the test cricket as ODI XI is already reserved.

It will be interesting to see England selection after this. Because performances here are no indication of England readiness of bowlers especially.
I hope no spinner other than Bhajji does well in the tests- because we might end up selecting more spinners for England because of that which will be a mistake.

Raina admitted that he could have done better in the five-match in which he managed just one fifty. “I didn't bat well in three games. I was in a bit of a rush and I was not spending much time in the middle. If I had spent more time, it would have been probably been different. My game is very positive. I was thinking if the ball was full, I can go over covers but it didn't work. I will learn from this mistake and hopefully won't make them anymore in the future and in the upcoming Test series,” he said.

Cric buzz- India will stay at 128 ratings points only if they win the series 3-0 but will slip to 127 if they win 2-0 while it will drop to 126 ratings points if they win 1-0 or 2-1.
India will drop six ratings points if West Indies win the series 1-0 or 2-1 and seven points in case of a 2-0 win for the West Indies.
Any idea if England wins the Rose Bowl match and wraps the SL series 2-0, what their test points will be?

Dont worry India will come down from #1 only AFTER they lose or draw the England series this year - adhu varaikkum nAma dhAn top. Even if we lose 3-0 to Windies, which is not as unlikely as it sounds. When your opening combo reads M Vijay - A Mukund, you need to be prepared for the worst. With Dravid on his last legs, and Laxman due a humiliation, it puts a lot of pressure on Kohli and Harbhajan to shore up India's batting. MSD - if he has physically recovered from years of stress - had a decent outing with the bat last time in Carribean.
I think it may not be a bad idea for India to get in Parthiv as opener in place of either Vijay or Mukund. He is sure to perform better than either of them. It is not as if they are going to get 50s and 100s between them. I will be surprised if between them Vijay and Mukund get more than 3 50+ scores in the series and definitely I dont expect 3+ centuries between them or for that matter, more than 2 century stands.
Vijay has already dropped out of India reckoning in T20s and ODIs. This series will mark his test match waterloo.
Thankfully, Badri will not play - hopefully Raina will play instead. So, avan case-la chance kuduthA adippAnnu maindain paNNikkalAm. Dhoni, pls dont expose your CSK team mate. Dont select him, please! Select AnA Badri's test career will also definitely end. Select AgalainAlum, it will end anyway.

Murali Vijay fit for Test opener against West Indies
http://www.cricbuzz.com/cricket-news...st-West-Indies-
The injury-hit Indian cricket team heaved a sigh of relief after opener Murali Vijay was declared fit for the opening Test against the West Indies, starting on Monday.
Vijay, who was hit on his right forefinger in his first practice session on Friday, has suffered no real damage. He was back in the nets and batted with intensity at Sabina Park on Sunday.
The Indians, unhappy with the practice facilities, chose to send their batters to a faraway location while the bowlers bowled alongside the main pitch at Sabina Park.
Praveen Kumar, Amit Mishra and Harbhajan Singh bowled for a long period in trying to work out the right length for the Test match. They also had a fair idea of the bounce the pitch would offer over the next five days.
The batters though returned to the venue once it was known that the repairs had been done and the practice pitches were fit to be used.
Even though Vijay is fit, there is still uncertainty over the fitness of pacer Munaf Patel. Munaf, who is battling an elbow injury, was again out of action on Sunday.
It is ironical that on a pitch which offers a great deal of bounce, India would be forced to go with just two medium-fast bowlers in the match.
Ishant Sharma and Praveen Kumar will be sharing the new ball but there is no other fast bowler on whom skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni can fall back upon.
Replacement medium-pacer Abhimanyu Mithun is expected to arrive today, well after the first day's play is over.
Mithun thus has ruled himself out and with the team unlikely to take chances on Munaf, it appears certain that India would go into the Test with two pace and an equal number of spinners.
It seals the place for leg-spinner Amit Mishra who, despite his one-day heroics, must have been praying for his inclusion in the side after being out for 10 months.
Harbhajan Singh will be keen to do well as well since he needs only seven wickets to reach the magical 400-wicket mark in his 94th Test.

Exactly this day 15 years ago Rahul Dravid made his Test Debut. Very vivid memories of that Lord's Test. I hope he gives more of his vintage performances against Eng and Aus again this year. Here is to one of the greatest servants of Indian cricket and a stellar role model/personality. I don't think we can see sports persons like him again in Indian cricket and let alone world cricket. One of the very few reasons along with Thala/Laxman to follow Indian cricket, personally.

>>Andrew Strauss had plenty to be frustrated about as England's Test series against Sri Lanka dribbled to a damp conclusion at the Rose Bowl on Monday. He was frustrated by the weather that closed in once again at tea;
he was frustrated by his own dropped catch off Rangana Herath in the morning session that might have prised an opportunity for England to press for victory. And
he was frustrated by his personal return of 27 runs in four innings, which now means
he'll be playing for Somerset against the Indian tourists next month, in a bid to find form before the first Test at Lord's.

He bowled really well. Line and length was too good, almost a replica of CB series-2008. I am sure if we score another 150+ runs, WI will struggle to reach that.

Kohli -
- star in the making. So, one slot in Indian middle order is fixed. Now, Laxman or Dravid or Tendulkar - one of them have no choice but to retire after this tour or England tour.
Gambhir-Sehwag-<Dravid>-Tendulkar-Kohli-(Raina or Sharma or Pujara)
Who will take Dravid's place? I guess somehow it has to be Kohli - only he has the capability to dictate the game like Ponting from #3. But he is kind of getting groomed for Tendul's #4. A bit confusing. #3-la oruthan strongA vENum.
If Rahane or Dhawan step up, Gambhir can move to #3 and strengthen that position.

The horses don't bolt without Dhoni's permission. Wide ball, outsiwnger, Barath goes chasing, too far from him to get a good connection, gets a thick edge, Raina takes a sharp catch at that same third slip. Life doesn't always offer second chances. Ask Sammy. However, when the second chance arrived for Dhoni, he made sure some Indian was there to take it

Indians suffer without DRS in opening Test
India paid a heavy price for refusing the usage of the Decision Review System in the ongoing first Test against West Indies with as many as four batsmen falling to dubious decisions which could have gone the visitors' way had the DRS been in place.
Skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni (16), Virat Kohli (15) and Suresh Raina (27) were the three Indian batsmen who could have got a 'life' had the DRS been in place to challenge the umpires' decision.
Harbhajan Singh too was given out LBW when replays suggested that the ball was going well above the stumps.

Indian cricketers criticise Harper for bad decisions
PTI | Jun 24, 2011, 11.16am IST
KINGSTON ( Jamaica): Umpire Daryl Harper came in for some scathing criticism from the Indian cricket team, which blasted the Australian for his poor decisions during the first cricket Test against the West Indies.
Such was the exasperation that a senior member of the side said that whole team wishes that Harper does not officiate in the third Test.
Skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni did little to hide his disgust at the standard of umpiring in the Test, which they won by 63 runs to take a 1-0 lead.
"If correct decisions were made, the game would have ended much earlier and we would have been in the hotel by now," Dhoni said at the post match press conference.
The Australian would stand for one last time when India take on West Indies in the third Test at Dominica from July 6.
"We don't want him -- you can quote it as the reaction of the entire Indian team," said a very senior member of the side.
Though Dhoni did not name anyone of the two umpires officiating in the match --- Ian Gould (England) and Harper -- several Indian players openly termed the latter as the centre of their ire.
"It's Daryl Harper six not out," said another senior cricketer as soon as he saw a bunch of Indian pressmen approaching him.
Indians were upset that Harper made at least three critical errors against India and three in favour of West Indies during the match.
"Suresh Raina, Harbhajan Singh and Dhoni himself for done in; (Darren) Bravo twice and once (Shivnarine) Chanderpaul benefitted," chimed in another Indian cricketer, bristling with aggression.
Raina was given out caught in the leg-trap off Devendra Bishoo and television replays suggested no edge from either bat or gloves of the batsman.
Harbhajan Singh was ruled out leg before wicket when the ball clearly was seen going way above the height of the stumps.
Dhoni was cleanly caught at point region off Bishoo but the bowler had cut the return crease in his bowling run-up and the delivery should have been called a no-ball.
All three decisions in question were given by Harper in India's second innings.
Then, when West Indies batted for the last time, there were confident appeals against Bravo and Chanderpaul which were not upheld.
The controversial Australian umpire is regarded worldwide as the worst umpire in the ICC list of elite umpires.
After being on the panel for nine years, between 2002 and 2011, the ICC too has come round to the general perception and declared that Harper will stand down after the termination of his contract in July 2011.
Harper also needled the Indians by banning Praveen Kumar from bowling for treading on to the 'danger area' of the pitch in his follow-through in the first innings.
Indians are not contesting the decision in private but feel Harper could have cautioned the debutant in a friendly way before taking the strong step.
Indian cricketers have little doubt umpire Harper has been clearly biased against them over the years.
"Remember, it was Harper who gave Sachin Tendulkar out lbw in a Test when the batsmen had ducked and was hit on his shoulder," remarked a cricketer.
During a Test of the 1999-2000 tour to Australia, a short delivery from Glenn McGrath had Tendulkar looking to duck under it but it hit him on the shoulders.
Umpire Harper promptly gave Tendulkar out though he was to say later 'the one (decision) that I would like the world to forget is the Sachin one.'
The shocking decision was the reason the International Cricket Council (ICC) introduced neutral umpires for both ends in Test matches.
Justified as the Indians are, it only underlines the reason why they should give their sanction to Umpires Decision Review System (UDRS).
The Board of Control for Cricket in India ( BCCI) has been steadfastly refusing the usage of UDRS technology even though worldwide it's acceptance is a norm.
The UDRS technology, because of BCCI's insistence, is not being used either in the present series or the one in England which follows next month.

Come on, give us Taufel and Dar - we'll not need UDRS. ICC always appoints the worst/biased umpires for India matches. BCCI - instead of fighting stupid battles - should simply insist on Taufel and Dar for India matches. edhai edhaiyO muscle powernAla sAdhikkaRavangaLukku idhu mudiyAdhA?
That will ensure that there will be a fair contest in matches involving India. The #1 test team should get the #1 umpires -

Basically, we should do what Eng/aus are doing now - and then advise them to go with majority, don't block progress etc. It is easy to advocate the system when it is favouring you, no?

Breaking news: The ICC has tweeted that Umpire Daryl Harper has withdrawn from the third Test. That's verbatim: their tweet does not have the word 'been' between has and withdrawn. Arm-twisting? Draw your conclusions. Must be said that Harper's umpiring has bordered on the disastrous in recent times, and the Indians complained about it after the first Test. Richard Kettleborough will replace Harper. Here's the quote from Dave Richardson, ICC's GM: "In the wake of some unfair criticism, Daryl has informed us that he does not wish to stand in what would have been his final Test." So long then, Harper.

ICC news
Harper withdraws from Dominica Test
ESPNcricinfo staff
June 29, 2011
Daryl Harper won't be standing in the final Test of the West Indies-India series
Umpire Daryl Harper has withdrawn from the third Test between the West Indies and India in Dominica that begins from July 6. Harper will be replaced in what was to be his final outing as a member of the elite panel by Richard Kettleborough .
He decided to step down "in the wake of some unfair criticism," according to ICC general manager Dave Richardson. Harper had been removed from the elite panel in May along with Asoka de Silva. His decisions in the recent Kingston Test had also attracted some criticism with MS Dhoni saying that "if the correct decisions were made, the game would have finished much earlier and I would have been in the hotel by now."
Richardson, though, defended Harper's decision-making record. "The reality of the situation is that Daryl's statistics show his correct decision percentage in Tests involving India is 96 per cent, which is considerably higher than the international average for top-level umpires.
"We have every faith in Daryl to finish the series and while we regret his decision we do respect it. The real shame is it deprives him of the opportunity to sign off as a Test match umpire in a manner befitting someone who has served the game so well since making his international debut back in 1994."
Harper stood in 95 Tests, 174 ODIs and 10 T20Is, making his international ODI debut in 1994 at Perth and his Test debut in November 1998.

Bridgetown Test: Wrong replay shown to give Dhoni out
http://www.indianexpress.com/news/br...ni-out/810822/
The controversy over poor umpiring in the ongoing Test series between India and the West Indies has taken a new twist as it has now emerged that Mahendra Singh Dhoni was given out off a no ball on the first day of the second match here.
In what could erupt into a major controversy, the television replays ordered to check if Fidel Edwards had no-balled didn't show that particular ball, instead some other legitimate delivery was shown to give Dhoni out.
Incidentally, Dhoni was given out off a no ball even in the first Test in Jamaica.
May be outsourcing all decisions could be an idea.

Wrong replay shown to give Dhoni out
The controversy over poor umpiring in the ongoing Test series between India and the West Indies has taken a new twist as it has now emerged that Mahendra Singh Dhoni was given out off a no ball on the first day of the second match in Barbados.
The latest case was the final delivery of Edwards' 15th over, the 59th of the innings, which had Dhoni offering the catch to Shivnarine Chanderpaul at mid-on.
As Dhoni headed for the pavillion, umpire Ian Gould asked him to stay put as he wanted a reconfirmation from the third umpire that the delivery was legitimate and Edwards had not overstepped the bowling crease.
The replays showed that Edwards' front foot had stayed within the crease but it was not the same delivery but a previous legitimate ball which was shown in television replays to judge Dhoni out.
The real delivery, as umpire Ian Gould had suspected, was indeed a no ball.
India, then 167 for 5, collapsed after the fall of Dhoni's wickets to be all out for 201 in the final session's play.
The Indians have been distrustful of the Decision Review System (DRS), the tracker system in particular, since they believe the person officiating it can make a mistake. In the case of Dhoni's dismissal, the producer handling the replays for the broadcasters erred by flushing out the replay of some other delivery while the one in question was indeed a no ball from Edwards.
It further rubbed salt into the wounds of the Indians who are already fuming at the wrong decision which ruled Suresh Raina (53) out and broke his prospering fifth wicket stand of 117 runs with VVS Laxman (85).
Umpire Asad Rauf had sent Raina packing though the deemed catch to forward short leg had come off the batsman's thighs and not his gloves. A crestfallen Raina stood transfixed at his spot, dropped his bat before slowly trudging back to the pavillion.
Raina was later adjudged to have breached the ICC's code of conduct and docked 25 per cent of his match-fee by Broad.
The first Test had earlier stirred a hornet's nest when Dhoni had publicly chided the umpires as no less than six dismissals were deemed to have gone against his team.
Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina, Harbhajan Singh and Dhoni himself were wrongly given out while the West Indies players were reprieved which opened a can of worms. All these decisions related to officiating umpire Daryl Harper.
The Indians made little secret of their dislike for Harper who now has added his own fuel to the fire by stepping down from the final assignment of his international career - the third Test of the present series in Dominica which begins from July 6.

Thanks scorpio for vital info.
"The replays showed that Edwards' front foot had stayed within the crease but it was not the same delivery but a previous legitimate ball which was shown in television replays to judge Dhoni out."
That was so foolish and depressing for the game of cricket. And it's happening very frequently.

SS,
This might be partial answer from cricinfo for your question.
"The replays showed that Edwards had a good portion of his foot behind the crease, prompting Brathwaite to deem it a legitimate delivery, and Dhoni was ruled out.
It later emerged that Brathwaite had been shown the wrong replay and that the delivery that led to Dhoni's dismissal should have been called a no-ball.
It later emerged that Brathwaite had been shown the wrong replay and that the delivery that led to Dhoni's dismissal should have been called a no-ball."Broad also said there was no scope for redressing the mistake. "Seeing as the game has continued, clearly there is no opportunity to reverse the decision. We are forced now put it behind us and move on with the remainder of the match."
Can Dhoni get 'rendaavadhu gadtch' in his second innings?
But my guess is umpire Ian Gould would have felt guilty to have referred third umpire as he was 99% sure that it was a no-ball. So by the end of the day, he would have gone back to see the exact replay and realized he was correct and informed ICC.
But if an umpire is not able to decide on a no-ball, which is a minimum mandatory requirements to be an umpire, and we are talking about international cricket, don't know what to say.
Again, the host broadcaster is from a third party company (IMG) and the third umpire is believeing him, whatever clip he is showing without even looking at the details on the screen, what ball is he showing to him. What else the technology can do, if still human errors are part of cricket or any other sport.
They think, just a plain apology with 'honest' mistake by the host broadcaster will close this issue. I don't know how a mistake can be honest, all mistakes are honest, is there any other kind?
We can even digest that umpire giving out himself for a not out, which happens, but after referring to third umpire, if it is not helping the betterment of cricket, then I pity the game itself.

they should hav started scoring fast as soon as dravid got out...
instead they were scoring like 1.5runs per over at that time for around 20 overs...
raina/dhoni should hav come instead of kohli who is already short of confidence and he has to play for himself first rather than going for runs...
they would hav got atleast 10 more extra overs to bowl them out...
dravid out'ku apram 38 overs aadi 100 run adichirukkaanga...
with 7 wickets in hand are we not confident enough that we can hit as many runs in less than 25 overs?

Softie, apdi ellAm calculate paNNa mudiyAdhu. The approach, as always, is to make the game safe first and then worry about winning, especially when you are 1-0 up. Contrary to what people say, #1 team doesnt mean you aspire to win every bl***y match.
Australia dethroned Windies in 1995. They became the super force that they were only around 2000-01.
In this case, it was fair on a pitch that was not easy to bat on, to first battle for survival and then once things became pretty clear on 5th day morning, try and setup a tantalising run chase.
I think Dhoni/Fletcher got it perfectly balanced.

The message you have entered is too short. Please lengthen your message to at least 10 characters-
Toss MS Dhoni has won the toss, and in agreement with JD he has chosen to bowl first. Munaf Patel is back from his elbow injury, and is replacing Abhimanyu Mithun. One of the things he mentions is the need to bowl as many overs in the first session when the pitch will be moist. It will also help his side's over-rate, because if his side is found slow there this year, he will be banned from the next match.
Darren Sammy wishes Shiv Chanderpaul on becoming the most capped West Indian player. He also introduces a debutant, Kieran Powell. Another change in the side, Kirk Edwards replaces Ramnaresh Sarwan. That means opener Lendl Simmons misses out
9.30am Jeff Dujon, the man with the highest humour-to-monotone ratio of any man, is serious during the pitch report, and sees too much moisture on the pitch to be batting first. However, he also sees the pitch turning quite a bit later on. So interesting decision at the toss, which is just around the corner

Yes, fair enough and I agree the pace with which it hit. But it seems to me that dhoni's glove was in contact with stumps, when he was trying to pull it away, before the ball came and hit it. It was very close to call anyway.

#1 team doesn't need to win all its matches to be hailed. They can lose a series or two, as we'll to England in the coming tour.
Australia's 16 match streaks were special because they came only twice in 15 yeras and that after 4 years of dominance and atleast 6 years after they dethroned Windies. It takes time to go there. Comparing an india that has just become #1 to peak Australia and expecting that performance is not smart.
Even then the peak Australia lost to India and drew series with NZ(0-0) and India.
Did we question their #1 status then?
Because of the impending senior batsmen retirement, india will never dominate like that Australia team but England, who'll replace India as #1, will eventually develop a team to match the peak Australians. Like it did for your peak Aussies, it will take years to reach there. Until then, poRumai.

Bishop saddened by West Indies' decline
S. Dinakar
Ian Bishop shut his eyes and spoke; the anguish was visible on his face. The general decline in the West Indies cricket saddens him.
The former fast bowler, who took 161 wickets in 43 Tests at 24.27, believed the slump in the fortune of the West Indies cricket actually began from the mid-90s.
The 43-year-old Bishop said to The Hindu, “We are paying the price of ignoring the importance of building a leader for the West Indies team. We have deliberately not tried to produce a leader.”
He added, “When you captain a group of nations that form the West Indies team, leadership is vital. Someone like Clive Lloyd commanded so much respect from the players.”
Bishop observed, “The fact that we now have a captain (Darren Sammy) who would not have found a place in a lot of the West Indian teams is an indictment of West Indies cricket.”
He was also of the opinion that the present generation of cricketers in the West Indies were lacking in knowledge of the game's history here. “They do not know about the great cricketers from the past who made tremendous sacrifices. Knowing history also instils values in you. You learn to respect the game and the people around it.”
Bishop elaborated, “I learnt a lot of it (history) from my seniors in the West Indies team. The value of the maroon cap, the pride of playing for the West Indies. Men such as Michael Holding and Malcolm Marshall were not just great bowlers. When you spoke to them, you also realised their deep understanding of the game.”
In a strong statement, Bishop said, “The decline in West Indian cricket is also a reflection in the decay of values in general in the Caribbean, in all walks of life. People are running after the dollar.”
Bishop said pursuing a career in cricket was not something that many youngsters desired. “Cricket demands hard work and commitment. Now, a lot of younger men are happier playing basketball under the lights at night. Cricket is no longer a way of life in the Caribbean.”
The former scalp-hunter was not pleased in the manner cricket had been run in the Caribbean. “We lack the administrative competence that lends itself to bringing out the skills of the players. We also require to prepare good, sporting tracks throughout the Caribbean.”
Market forces
Bishop said nationalism was being challenged by the market forces. “Nationalism was a more vibrant ideal some time back. Now the players have lot more choices. The importance of international cricket has been diluted with every passing year in the Caribbean.”
Bishop acknowledged the choice between playing for the country or making a lot more money in the cash-rich leagues was not an easy decision for the players.
He said, “Sometimes it can be a difficult choice to make. Look, in every profession people want to maximise their earning. People are always looking for opportunities. It is no different in cricket. You get a lot more money for playing lesser cricket. And you get to spend a lot more time at home.”
On the diminishing crowds for international matches in the Caribbean — the Test in Dominica has been an exception — Bishop said, “Not many want to go to the stadium and watch a team that loses matches even at home. They still follow the matches on television and the radio but do not watch the game in the arena.”
Talking about the Chris Gayle issue, Bishop said the reality of the situation demanded a compromise from both sides. “The Board should give the players some freedom. But the cricketers cannot have their cake and eat it too. Once they sign a contract, they must honour it. For the sake of the West Indies cricket, we must find a middle path.”
Asked about the West Indies Players Association CEO Dinanth Ramnarine being a stumbling block in the negotiations, Bishop said, “Some of the cricketers who came from a period of mismanagement and mistrust still carry the scars of the past. That is a part of the problem.”

Because it is not about talent in difficult conditions - which come probably 10% of the time in International cricket now. 90% is played under benign conditions - including a slowed down Perth pitch - so only those players like Yuvraj who can absolutely smash away in those conditions who will become future greats. 19th, seriously it doesnt work that way. It is not as easy as you presume - easy batting track, T20-la 20 oversla 180 chase pandrom idhu mudiyAdhA etc.
The men in the middle - Dravid and Laxman, no less - and Vijay who went before seem to have given the feedback that it is difficult to play forcing strokes on.
D Bishoo was extracting quite a bit of turn from outside the leg stump with the rough. Which is probably why they promoted Raina to counter it - once it failed, we didnt have any more left handers to counter that strategy. Note that Raina scored 8 off 18 balls and didnt look fluent - and Dhoni or Fletcher mentioned this as well in their conference; that this kind of showed them that it wasnt a worthwhile chase.
If he had scored freely and got out playing one stroke too many, maybe they'd have believed the win was there for taking with aggressive attack.
But that didnt happen. Add to that feedback from Dravid and Laxman - even if you discount Vijay because avanukku international cricketla batting engEyum eppovum kashtam dhAn - I'd rather believe those two folks than any other theory in the world. They were in the middle - if they say it wasnt easy batting there, then that's where it stays for me. I think more and more I see parallel between Mark Taylor and Dhoni. No unnecessary aggro, just get the job done and make sure you dont screw up the job. Series win was the bigger picture. He focussed on that. That's what matters.
If not for Rain, this could have been 3-0 despite an inexperienced batting line up, difficult pitches to bat on, time lost to Rain and India's usual not-so-great bowling line up robbed of its one decent option Zaheer Khan.
That is worth savouring rather than lamenting a "lack of World #1 Status and Aura" etc which are all English/Anglo Saxon media creation trying to poke the balloon.

As long as we do not climb down from no: 1, then fine. Had they felt that if the chase is worth it, they would have tried. I trust the team management and it's decision.

And we dont need to be Steve Waugh's all-conquering Aussies yet. Simply put, at a comparable stage, the Aussies weren't all-conquering invincibles either. Their development into the invincible machine came later in their growth curve.
We may or may not reach that stage - and I tend to believe we won't; England will - but this is not the time to compare with Waugh's Aussies and lament...

We can, provided we have ATLEAST 3 CONSISTENT GENUINE MATCH-WINNING BOWLERS - Windies at peak had the super-duper pace quartet. Aus had - Mcgrath, Warne, Gillespie.
If we are No. 1, despite having just 1 in Zak, this is a greater achievement than what Aussies did IMO

My point is, we are not that poor to defend 40+ overs, even if we loose top 3 wickets by playing aggressively. When Chandrapaul, Edwards, Kirk can do that why cant we?
Its a challenging total, India failed to take up the challenge, that's my view.

edhukkunga? Rahul Dravid out Agi average innum 0.02 pinnAdi pOgavA? ippO dhAn thattu thadumARi Ponting average kitta vandhurukkAr. What point should we prove by batting a few more overs. This is not ODI. No fielding restrictions, powerplay etc. Windies can always kill the match bowling wide on both sides. And they'd surely try it if they were in danger. Ofcourse, they could have thrown their bats around(everyone except Dravid) and if 2-3 wickets fell, shut the shop with Dravid.
But they made a judgement that on that wicket, at that stage, the only way to score at run a ball was by fluke throwing the bats. Just for the sake of a result, that seems a compromise to me in the context of the joys of Test Cricket.
Result is not everything in Test Cricket - this has to be understood. That is why there is an option called draw in Test Cricket. Test Cricket is not just any other sport - it reflects life more closely than any other game. Like in most people's lives, you dont go out a winner or a loser - Life always ends in a draw. It is the lesson that test cricket is supposed to teach you. That
"For when the great scorer comes, he sees not what's against your name
But how you played the game"
We shouldnt be fretting over the non-result of a test match. If we do, we dont understand test cricket.

+1 I said that in one of my previous posts.
Till Tea time they scored close to 3 runs per over and the req.run rate was on par. I expected that they would accelerate a bit but after tea they straight away played for a draw.
Plum draw is a result I agree - I loved it when Smith/Mckenzie played for almost 2 days and drew the match. But this is different, treat number 10 test team as they are.

poRumai folks. As I said, Australia wasnt Australia until they became Australia, if you see what I mean. And it took a good 6 years for them to start defeating opponents in the mind itself. Even then India stood toe-to-toe with them except for the 1999 tour.
Obviously, the current #1 India team is not exactly the invincible machine that Australia was at their peak(Note this: not for 14 years from 1995-2009 but only for a 7-8 year period from 1999-2006, before that they were reaching their peak, and after that they started descending rapidly). India have spent 2 years on the top now. If after 4 more years, they are #1 but still eking out draws like this, then criticise them for not being worthy #1 invincibles. Till then, let's allow them to accumulate series victories like this. This will feed into the confidence.
Like I said, because of the impending retirements, I expect that we'll not reach the peak level of Australia. But England will probably do. And then you can celebrate the new #1 invincible team (viz) England.
Till then, let's enjoy our brief, if not so commanding, reign at #1. Why spoil our own happiness now by chasing the elusive invincible status?

I was thinking the same - how to rename bilateral engagements
Aus - Border-Gavaskar Trophy - maybe time to bring in Laxman's name into this trophy? Laxman-McGrath? Bhajji-Symonds?
Ind-Windies - Now this is one team which Gavaskar did best against - this could be Gavaskar-Richards trophy or something. Or maybe Dravid-Chanderpaul trophy. Considering the nature of the recent series between them in terms of turgidity, the latter will be a very apt name.
Lanka-Windies: Lara-Muralitharan Trophy
India- Pakistan: difficult one as all sorts of Pakis do well against India. So maybe fittingly we must call it Elahi-Qasim Trophy in honour of random pakistanis who do well against India
India-New Zealand: Again, Dravid. Perhaps Vettori. Dravid-Vettori. Studious guys, both.
Pakistan-England: Waqar-Wasim Cup (in honour of reverse swing which eventually helped England beat Australia, upon which it was accepted as a legal category of bowling in Cricket. Until then, it was cheating since the English couldnt do it.) or the Asif-Amir-Butt challenge.
Sri Lanka - Australia: The Darrel Hair Trophy

what's the strike rate? If it's above 80. The point still stands. He raises tempo with quick 28 odd runs, that's what the stat says. That would have done it vs Windies.

No it wouldnt. 28 runs at his strike rate happens in about 8 overs, whence India's score is likely to be something like 39/1. Doesnt give much leverage as the rest score at 2.5-3 an over, especially the ones coming in before Sachin. Sometimes, Sachin too doesnt accelerate.

I think it'd have. Dhoni/Raina would be able to promote themselves earlier. Not feasible with an order reading Mukund/Vijay/Dravid/Laxman.
And his average against Windies in 4th innings is 49 + 98.5 Strike rate. Admittedly having played in only 2 innings. But then we're already typifying a 4th innings situation without speculating his contribution in 2nd innings.
You're right though on Sachin's SR. Esp. in 4th innings. Pretty low. As are Laxman's & Dravid's (very low).
OTOH Ponting is the kind of dream player for non-opening positions, esp. in clutch situations of 4th innings chasing targets at 4-5 runs per over.

I agree with that sentiment. Except it doesn't apply to Viru & possibly Doni/Naina (if they woke up on right side of the bed).
I'm simply playing devil's advocate to behemoth-ian gospel which compromises fundamental causality.
