Ponting backs Symonds for Ashes spot

May 19, 2009
Cricket Australia will reveal on Wednesday if Andrew Symonds, who is in South Africa for the IPL, will be part of the Ashes squad © Associated Press
Ricky Ponting has said he would be more than happy to have Andrew Symonds in his Ashes squad but conceded the selectors faced a hard call on whether they could squeeze him in. The touring party will be named at 11am (AEST) on Wednesday and there is no guarantee that Symonds, who was once a certainty in the starting XI, will be chosen.
His off-field issues over the past year have led to him being stood down from the side on two occasions and he has struggled to regain his best form at first-class level. That has allowed Marcus North to capably slot into the No. 6 role, while Andrew McDonald has held down the allrounder's position.
Shane Watson and Brad Hodge will also come into contention along with Symonds, who made his latest comeback for Australia in the recent one-day series against Pakistan in the UAE. Ponting said it would be no great bombshell if Symonds was named in the squad, which is likely to feature 16 players.
"I wouldn't be surprised, he has had his share of battles over the last 12 months, obviously the well documented stuff off the field," Ponting told AAP. "He's worked his way back into domestic cricket pretty well and played well for us over in Abu Dhabi, Dubai.
"He's a great guy to have around a team, there is no doubt about that. Obviously the selectors are going to have some tough decisions to make in the coming hours."

Ashes 2009
Watson closes in on Ashes call-up

Shane Watson, if fit, adds flexibility to Australia's line-up © AFP
The majority of Australia's cricketers are facing a sleepless night, with selectors instructing them to wait by the telephone from 9am on Wednesday to learn their Ashes fate. Few of the prospective 16-man touring party have received advance notice of their Ashes status by Andrew Hilditch's panel, prompting much tension and trepidation among contracted players contacted by Cricinfo.
So guarded is Cricket Australia ahead of Wednesday's squad announcement that coach Tim Nielsen would not even confirm whether the squad would consist of 16 players. "It could be 15, 16, one or 25," he said. "We have obviously given our input, but we will all find out tomorrow."
The main points of contention remain the positions of all-rounder and reserve batsman. Marcus North and Shane Watson are understood to have the front-running for the all-rounders' posts, most likely leaving the well-credentialled Andrew Symonds, Andrew McDonald and Brad Hodge to contest for the final place in the squad.
Symonds on Tuesday received support from a powerful ally in Ricky Ponting, however with Australia spoilt for choice in the all-rounder stakes - and Symonds only recently returned from another extended stint on the sidelines - he faces an uphill battle. McDonald, too, has many supporters within Cricket Australia's corridors of power, although the addition of a third all-rounder at the expense of a specialist batsman could create problems if a member of the top-six were to endure injury or form setbacks in England.
Hodge, with a Test batting average in excess of 55 and a half-century in his most recent outing for Australia, could prove the solution. A surprise recipient of a central contract last week, the 34-year-old has extensive experience in English conditions and, after an unbeaten 71 for the Kolkata Knight Riders on Monday, gave further weight to the notion that age has not blunted his skill or desire. Selectors may also be drawn to his versatility - he is capable of batting anywhere in the top-order - and the additional veteran presence he would bring to a largely youthful squad.
The remainder of Australia's Ashes squad should be relatively straightforward. Cricinfo understands Australia's bowling set-up is all but confirmed, with Doug Bollinger looming as the unlucky omission. That should result in Brett Lee, Mitchell Johnson, Stuart Clark, Peter Siddle and Ben Hilfenhaus forming Australia's pace contingent, and Nathan Hauritz occupying the sole spin bowling position.
There should be no surprises, either, in selecting Australia's top-six batsmen - the incumbent line-up of Simon Katich, Phillip Hughes, Ricky Ponting, Michael Hussey, Michael Clarke and North will get the nod. North, with only two Tests to his name, is looming as one of the most vital components of the Australian squad, with his finger spin likely to play an important role if, as is expected, selectors opt for an all-seam attack in several of the five Ashes Tests. Watson, too, would provide tremendous flexibility to the side if fully fit, and would allow Australia to field a deep batting line-up that could feature the highly capable duo of Johnson and Lee batting as low as nine and ten.
Brad Haddin will retain the wicketkeeping duties, with Graham Manou expected to be named his understudy on tour. Haddin served as deputy to Adam Gilchrist on the 2005 Ashes tour, and recently told Cricinfo of his desire to avenge the loss. "The only time I've been involved in an Ashes series, we tasted defeat," he said. "As exciting as it was to experience all the hype in 2005, it was still a pretty disappointing tour in a lot of ways. The memories are still strong from that tour. Some of the other guys had a chance to be part of the next Ashes series that we won 5-0, but I wasn't in that squad."
Whichever way Australia stack their squad, only a quarter of their touring party - Ponting, Clarke, Katich and Lee - can claim previous Test experience in England. Clark and Hussey played leading roles in Australia's 5-0 sweep of England at home in 2006-07, but both made their Test debuts after the 2005 Ashes series.
Possible squad: Ricky Ponting (capt), Michael Clarke (vice-capt), Stuart Clark, Brad Haddin, Nathan Hauritz, Ben Hilfenhaus, Brad Hodge, Phillip Hughes, Michael Hussey, Mitchell Johnson, Simon Katich, Brett Lee, Graham Manou, Marcus North, Peter Siddle, Shane Watson.

'Nervy' Hughes awaits Ashes call-up

Phillip Hughes might possess Test and first-class averages nudging 70, but he still admits to nerves on the eve of Australia's Ashes squad announcement. Hughes will be confirmed as Simon Katich's opening partner when Andrew Hilditch names the 16-man touring party on Wednesday, but is loath to pre-empt the selectors' decision.
"You still love to see the team and know that you're there," Hughes told Cricinfo. "You don't want to take things too lightly. Obviously I'd love to see the team and see myself in it."
Hughes has been in superb touch for Middlesex of late, producing his fourth century of the English summer on Sunday in a limited-overs match against Somerset. His innings of 119 from 112 deliveries propelled Middlesex to their highest ever one-day total, and followed a sequence of three centuries in as many first-class fixtures, culminating in an astonishing record of 574 runs at 143.50.
Hughes' sublime efforts on the county scene have hardly surprised Australian audiences, who marveled as he reeled off consecutive innings of 75, 115 and 160 in his maiden Test series in South Africa. In his 24 first-class appearances to date, he has compiled ten centuries, and will be heavily relied upon to lead the Australian batting order in England.
When Australia surrendered the Ashes urn in 2005, Hughes was completing his year 10 studies at Macksville High School on the north coast of New South Wales. Now, he is set to re-unite with Katich at the top of the order, and will look to continue the form that helped guide Australia to a surprise 2-1 victory in South Africa.
"I've obviously spent a fair bit of time with Simon at New South Wales over the last 12-18 months," Hughes said. "We've formed a good relationship on and off the field. That really helps, when you get along like that. We've batted in the middle together for a while now, and it's always great when you go to that next level ... to go out and open the batting with him. It definitely did help a little bit."
Hughes has used his time with Middlesex to develop an understanding of local pitch conditions - his only previous trip to England was for a three-week carnival with the New South Wales under-17 team - and develop a mental dossier on some of the England players he will face, not least his Middlesex team-mate, Andrew Strauss.
He has also taken the opportunity to speak with Justin Langer, currently on duty with Somerset. Like Langer, Hughes is a prolific left-hand opener with an unfashionable technique, and the elder has taken his successor under his wing.
"I'll be catching up with him again and we'll be going for dinner," Hughes said prior to Sunday's one-day match. "He's a great guy and he's been great for me. We met up earlier on this trip to England, and spoke a bit during the South African series. He asks me about England, how I'm enjoying it, and just about general life. The big thing he tells me is to be myself. He says that this is the technique that got you to this level, so keep being yourself and keep enjoying it. It's great to talk to Justin."

Ponting expects Vaughan to return
Cricinfo staff

Australia's captain, Ricky Ponting, believes that England's Ashes veterans, Michael Vaughan and Steve Harmison, will be back to face his team come the start of the series, despite the instant impact that Ravi Bopara and Graham Onions have made since they came into the side for the Lord's Test last week.
Neither Vaughan nor Harmison is in the set-up for the second Test against West Indies, starting at Chester-le-Street on Thursday, and with no more five-day cricket before Australia arrive at Cardiff on July 8, time is running out for them to prove their worth.
But Ponting, speaking to Fox Sports, said: "I've just got a bit of a feeling that they might want to get Vaughan back into the set-up and they might pick Harmison for when we get there. So I think their side might actually shape up closer to the side of 2005 or 2007 than we actually think it might."
Vaughan's No. 3 slot is currently occupied by Bopara, whose 143 in the first Test was the decisive innings of the match. "Bopara made a really good hundred against the West Indies last week, but their batting is fairly similar with Pietersen, Collingwood, Strauss, Cook, those guys," he said. "We've played a lot against those guys over the years, so it's not too dissimilar, both sides have probably got three or four changes from last time we met."
As for Onions, who took 5 for 38 at Lord's, Ponting remained to be convinced of his long-term role. "He's a lively bowler, and he did well in that game but I'm not sure when they get the Sidebottoms and all those guys back if he'll still be in their side, but we'll wait and see."
Asked about Vaughan's prospects of an Ashes recall, England's captain Andrew Strauss responded: "There's a chance, there's definitely a chance. "There's a lot of cricket to be played between now and the Ashes, and we all know what Vaughany brings in terms of runs and experience. But the ball is in the hands of the players who are in the side right at the moment."

The Ashes 2009
McDonald keeps fingers crossed over Ashes selection
Alex Brown
May 17, 2009
Andrew McDonald: "I'm not really sure how it [Ashes selection] will go. I don't really know what the conditions will be like in England - I've played a bit of league cricket there - and they could come into it." © Getty Images
Andrew McDonald is bracing for a nervous few days. With the Ashes squad announcement due this week, and Shane Watson and Andrew Symonds nipping at his heels, Australia's incumbent Test allrounder is uncertain which names will appear on Andrew Hilditch's team sheet on Wednesday.
Cricket Australia's 25-man contract list, announced last week, offered little insight into the selectors' preferences in regards to the allrounders' race for the Ashes. McDonald and Marcus North, both integral to Australia's recent 2-1 series victory in South Africa, and the more experienced duo of Watson and Symonds all received contracts, but at least one of the foursome is expected to be stood down from the 15- or 16-man Ashes touring party.
"There are always some nerves," McDonald told Cricinfo from South Africa, where he is currently based with the Delhi Daredevils. "You never take anything for granted. I'm over here in South Africa, and there's no real way to press my case. I'll just be waiting by the phone, like everyone else."
North's sound batting at No. 6 and ability to bowl finger spin - a potentially crucial secondary skill if Australia opt to play four specialist quicks - should guarantee him the nod. But just how McDonald, Watson and Symonds fit into the picture remains unclear, with all providing compelling, though not irresistable, cases for selection.
Watson and Symonds were both considered first-choice selections before injury and behavioural issues, respectively, intervened. Watson was in superb one-day batting form in the UAE this month, and has been a firm favourite of selectors in the past, but the minor groin injury sustained in Australia's most recent Twenty20 match against Pakistan will raise further questions as to his long-term durability. Symonds, too, has enjoyed the strong historical backing of Ricky Ponting and the reputation as an international game-breaker, but has done little to enhance either in recent months.
And then there is McDonald. A surprise selection for the Sydney Test against South Africa in January, McDonald performed steadily with bat and ball as Australia claimed three consecutive victories over their arch-rivals. The Victorian allrounder proved adept in the role of partnership-breaker - claiming nine wickets at 33.33 in four Tests, including the scalps of Jacques Kallis [twice], AB de Villiers and Hashim Amla - and allayed some concerns surrounding his batting with 68 in his last innings in Cape Town.
"Every game you play makes you feel a little more settled," McDonald said. "It does take a while to find your feet. The group we took to South Africa was fantastic and gelled well, so that made it a bit easier. I think with winning those Tests [against South Africa] it helped me to find my feet a bit quicker than it might have otherwise.
"But I'm not really sure how it [Ashes selection] will go. I don't really know what the conditions will be like in England - I've played a bit of league cricket there - and they could come into it. I suppose anyone in that 25-man contract list can put forward a strong case for Ashes selection. Shane showed in the last one-day series that he can bat in the top six, and Symonds has obviously been a consistent performer over a long period of time. There aren't any four- or five-day games between now and when they select the squad. I suppose there's not a lot I can do about it now."
McDonald has endured a frustrating month in the IPL, where he has yet to play a game for the tournament-leading Delhi Daredevils. But he has been more appreciated of late by Australia's selectors who, after a barren decade, have suddenly found themselves with an abundance of allrounders to choose from.
"I guess it goes in cycles," McDonald said. "Every era is different. Not so long ago we had two of the best spinners going around in Shane Warne and Stuart MacGill, and now we're on the look-out for spinners, although Nathan Hauritz has done a fantastic job for us lately. Now we have quite a few allrounders, whereas a couple of years back we were searching for them. We have three candidates in that [contract] list who could fill the job, and that's great for the game.
"Watson and Symonds have done a fantastic job. But, for me, Jacques Kallis is the top of the tree. You look at his consistency and his output over a long period of time, and I think that's what every allrounder wants to be. He is a fantastic talent, and he is a consistent contributor."

Edhu No LM, England winning it again?. No i certainly didn't mean that.
I mean that was the Best ever Test series!. Hands down in my books. The quality of cricket that happened in 2005 was phenomenal. England bowler's reverse swing, Warne's beauty (Ball of the millenium) to Strauss, Mcgrath's 5 fer in the 1st Test at Lords, Ponting's Defiance in Headingley, The amazing 2 run win and Brett Lee's and Flintoff's reaction after that. You name it that series had everything. Not to forget Pietersen's final Test century also. IMO, that was the best ever test series.

McDonald in, Symonds out of Ashes squad
Alex Brown
May 20, 2009
Shane Watson, Ricky Ponting, Brad Haddin and Stuart Clark look forward to the Ashes after their spots were confirmed in the 16-man squad © AFP
Andrew Symonds' colourful 26-Test career appears all but over after he was omitted from Australia's 16-man Ashes touring squad. Symonds, who turns 34 next month, was overlooked in preference of younger allrounders in Shane Watson, Andrew McDonald and Marcus North for the five-Test series against England, beginning in Cardiff on July 8.
Andrew Hilditch's selection panel remained loyal to the young squad that defeated South Africa in three out of four Tests in 2009, ensuring McDonald got the nod over candidates such as Symonds and Brad Hodge. Watson, Australia's allrounder of choice on last year's tour of India, has also earned a call-up despite only recently returning to bowling after another stint on the sideline with back stress fractures.
The move to select three all-rounders and no specialist reserve batsman is a considerable risk on the part of selectors, and leaves little wriggle room if members of the top order are beset with form or injury issues in England. But it will provide Australia with added bowling options to relieve the pressure on their paceman, all of whom shouldered heavy workloads over the past 12 months, resulting in injuries to the likes of Brett Lee, Stuart Clark and Peter Siddle.
"Without a doubt this is the one of the most flexible squads we've taken away and that's something I think the selectors were really looking for," coach Tim Nielsen wrote on his blog. "Shane Watson adds plenty for us; he's played well for Australia over the last little while in the one-day arena and has shown that he can make hundreds at the top of the order and bat anywhere between one and seven. Obviously when he gets over his groin injury we expect him to be able to bowl which will add another dimension to our squad also."
The inclusions of Watson and McDonald were the only contentious calls in an otherwise predictable Australian touring party. The five-man pace contingent largely selected itself - although Doug Bollinger can consider himself a trifle unlucky - and competition will be on in earnest when the Australians commence their first tour game against Sussex at Hove on June 24. Mitchell Johnson and Lee are likely to be given first shot at the new ball, leaving Clark, Siddle and Ben Hilfenhaus to duel for the final one or two slots, depending on whether Nathan Hauritz, the specialist spinner, is played.
The make-up of the Australian top order also went to script. The top six from the tour of South Africa were all retained, and Brad Haddin, unsurprisingly, held his position. Haddin will be supported on tour by back-up wicketkeeper Graham Manou.
"The Ashes squad contains an exciting blend of experience and youth," Hilditch said. "The core of the squad is made up of the side which successfully won the Test series in South Africa and includes Phillip Hughes and Marcus North who both scored hundreds on debut.
"The young fast-bowling group which performed so well in South Africa of Peter Siddle, Mitchell Johnson and Ben Hilfenhaus will all be taking part in their first Ashes tour to England and as shown in South Africa, they have the skills to perform at the international level and will be well suited to English conditions. The bowling group has been further strengthened by the return from injury of Brett Lee and Stuart Clark."
The omission of Symonds was not entirely surprising given his recent controversial history and the strong cases presented by Watson, McDonald and North, but is notable after Ricky Ponting's glowing endorsement on the eve of the squad selection. Ponting, though, was philosophical when assessing Symonds' exclusion on Wednesday.
"I can't personally be disappointed," he said. "The facts are he (Symonds) went out of the side ... and we gave opportunities to others and they've played well enough to keep Andrew out of the squad. That's as simple as it has to be."
Squad Ricky Ponting, Michael Clarke, Stuart Clark, Brad Haddin, Nathan Hauritz, Ben Hilfenhaus, Phillip Hughes, Michael Hussey, Mitchell Johnson, Simon Katich, Brett Lee, Graham Manou, Andrew McDonald, Marcus North, Peter Siddle, Shane Watson.

Watson wins battle with Symonds

Shane Watson and Andrew Symonds are two large, strong men, and like a pair of gunslingers in a western movie, this town ain't big enough for them both. During the 2006-07 Ashes, Symonds shot back into Australia's Test team while Watson, his then Queensland team-mate and rival allrounder, was injured. Now it's Watson who has gained a place for the return tour of England at the expense of Symonds.
Australia's selectors faced a tough decision on which allrounders to include in their 16-man squad. Watson and the incumbent Andrew McDonald were preferred ahead of Symonds, who in the past year has twice been stood down from the team over behavioural issues.
It could mean the end of the Test road for Symonds, who turns 34 next month. But Watson was unequivocal when asked how he felt about shooting down his colleague's Test dreams.
"Good. It means I'm playing Test cricket and performing well," Watson said. "It's been an interesting battle between me and Andrew Symonds.
"Initially I got my opportunity in the [2006-07] Ashes and unfortunately I got injured and he made the most of that opportunity that he got and has been performing well over the last couple of years. But of recent times he hasn't helped himself in regards to what he's been doing and I've just got to make the most of the opportunity that's presented itself."
Watson has been chosen subject to fitness as he continues his recovery from a groin strain suffered during the series against Pakistan in the UAE, but he is not considered in any real doubt. Still, the latest injury was a setback for Watson, who had returned to the ODI side as a batsman only, having been diagnosed with back stress fractures during the home summer.
That ended an 11-month injury-free run for Watson - the longest such period since the opening couple of years of his first-class career. He drew immense confidence from stringing together a complete tour of India last October, when he played all four Tests, and it reconfirmed in his mind that he did not want to be pigeonholed as a limited-overs specialist.
"It was massive. Those ten or 11 months that I had from the IPL through the West Indies tour and then on to the India series as well gave me a massive amount of confidence to know that I can get through," he said. "There's been a few setbacks after that but it's just finding the perfect balance of what I'm trying to do.
"The opportunities that I had in the Test series in India just fuelled it even more to understand that Test cricket is the absolute ultimate in every single way. Mentally, technically and physically it pushes the boundaries so to be part of the biggest Test series for Australia is going to be so exciting."
The chairman of selectors Andrew Hilditch praised Watson's ability to bat anywhere in the top six and his quality fast bowling. Neither he nor the captain Ricky Ponting felt that Symonds' Test career was over, but that Watson was simply the better option for the balance of the team in England.
"I suppose Andrew Symonds and Shane Watson were competing for the same spot," Hilditch said. "I would class them both as batters who give us quality overs at their best, but on this occasion Shane has been preferred because in the selectors' view he adds great balance to the team.
"Shane was in extremely good form before his minor injury and in addition he gives us quality pace bowling and he's capable of batting anywhere in the top six. We think he's a very good selection for the Ashes tour."
But although Watson has edged out Symonds he will also be competing for a place in the starting XI with McDonald, who has played all of Australia's past four Tests. One rival has been outgunned, but another has sneaked into town.

Ponting aims to set things right

There aren't many gaps on Ricky Ponting's cricket CV. He has led Australia to two World Cup triumphs, is his country's leading ODI run scorer and will soon take the Test mantle, and has captained his nation to series wins against every other Test side. But there is a glaring omission that he hopes will be rectified in the next few months.
"There's one thing on my cricketing resume that hasn't been achieved yet, and that's being captain of a winning Ashes series in England," Ponting said at the announcement of Australia's 16-man touring squad. "That's something very dear to my heart, and something I'll certainly be speaking to the players about when we arrive - making sure we get over that hurdle."
Ponting is one of six men in Australia's squad who was also part of the group that lost the urn in England in 2005. It was a bitter blow to his captaincy reputation but four years on - and with a 5-0 Ashes whitewash to his name in the meantime - he insists he is not concerned that the result could be repeated.
"We all realised last time what mistakes we made and we also realised how great a Test series that was to be a part of," Ponting said. "Even though we lost, it was probably the greatest Test series I've played in. I don't think there'll be any hangover from 2005.
"In 2005, we got off to a great start and then things slipped away from us from there. A lot of us have been there, and learned from our mistakes of last time and we're keen to rectify that."
But while six of the squad were part of the previous tour, ten of the group are looking forward to their first away Ashes series. They range from the more experienced men like Michael Hussey and Mitchell Johnson, to the players who are still trying to establish their place in the side, such as Andrew McDonald and Ben Hilfenhaus.
It's hardly a squad with the same threat level of the 2005 group, which featured Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath, Matthew Hayden and Adam Gilchrist. However, Ponting was confident the selectors had given him the right mix of experience and youth after he led an even younger group to a 2-1 win in South Africa this year.
"Going to South Africa, we went there with a less experienced team," Ponting said. "The most pleasing thing for me through the South African tour was that when the tough moments came around a lot of our young guys really put their hands up and got the side home.
"You don't face many tougher tasks than playing South Africa over there. That really excites me about what we've got coming up on this Ashes tour."
Last time Australia visited England it was the opposition allrounder Andrew Flintoff who gave the tourists nightmares and ended up as the Player of the Series. Australia have been searching for a Test allrounder of their own in the years since then and the inclusion of Shane Watson in the squad, along with other versatile players like McDonald and Marcus North, has pleased Ponting.
"Whenever you're picking a team you're looking for some flexibility, you're looking at guys being able to play different roles at different times for you through the course of a game," he said. "There's no doubt through the last South African series it was a lot of those guys, allrounder types, that really did a good job for us."
But ultimately it will come down to the senior players - and Ponting is the most experienced of all - to ensure the errors of 2005 are not repeated. And if he can do that, the biggest hole in his glorious resume will be filled.

The Ashes 2009
Fast men prepare to fight for their places
Brydon Coverdale at the SCG
May 20, 2009
Stuart Clark and Brett Lee are facing tougher competition for their spots than they have in a long time © AFP
As a former real estate agent, Stuart Clark knows plenty about supply and demand. Right now there are five men bidding for what Clark wants - a fast-bowling place in the first Test - but the market is tight and there are probably only three available. Reports this week of a turning pitch in Cardiff, where the Ashes kicks off, should give Nathan Hauritz hope of a Test recall but for the fast bowlers the situation is less clear.
And the scenario facing Clark and Brett Lee, Australia's two most cherished fast men over the past couple of years, is an unfamiliar one. The success of Mitchell Johnson, Peter Siddle and Ben Hilfenhaus on the tour of South Africa, when Lee and Clark were injured, has given the selectors a conundrum. Can they squeeze Clark and Lee back into the side or could the one-time pin-ups become the back-ups?
One of Australia's more astute fast-bowling pundits, Damien Fleming, said during the week he would have no hesitation in leaving Lee and Clark out in Cardiff to allow the incumbent trio a chance to thrive. Clark, who has been confined to Sydney grade cricket and a handful of ODIs since undergoing elbow surgery in December, believes his record justifies a prompt recall.
"There's going to be competition for spots," Clark said after learning of his selection in the 16-man squad. "It's something that I'm looking forward to. The guys that do the job time and time again generally get picked. That's what I'm banking on, that I've been there and done it before and been successful."
It is a strange twist for Australia's attack that among Lee, Clark and Johnson - the fast-bowling trio entrusted to lead Australian in recent campaigns - the only one now guaranteed a spot is Johnson, the most junior of the three, following his phenomenal results against South Africa. It shows how quickly things can change.
And with two warm-up games before the first Test, the make-up of the attack could easily alter quite rapidly. The chairman of selectors, Andrew Hilditch, said he was thrilled with the way Siddle and Hilfenhaus stood up in South Africa but their incumbency wouldn't guarantee them Test places in England.
"The reward for their performance is being in the squad," Hilditch said. "Fully fit and at their best [Lee and Clark are] going to put a lot of pressure on the bowling group that was in South Africa. But that being said I won't come away from the fact that we were really happy with the bowling group in South Africa. We think it did exceptionally well."
All of which amounts to a hedging of bets among selectors until the tour matches. With Shane Watson and Andrew McDonald also in the mix as fast-medium allrounders, Australia's seven seamers and Hauritz will be anxious to get a decent run against Sussex and the England Lions. Like Clark, Siddle hopes his record - he has 29 wickets at 27.65 from his seven Tests - will be enough to retain his place.
"I'd hope so, yeah. I don't think I've done anything wrong and hopefully I can just prepare well in the tour matches and if everything's going right - the body's well and I'm bowling well - I hope so," Siddle said. "There's five quicks in the squad and it's going to be whoever plays in the tour matches and whoever's fit and bowling well and feeling strong, and then I suppose the conditions."
"We were really happy with the bowling group in South Africa. We think it did exceptionally well."
Andrew Hilditch
While Clark and Siddle are confident of their chances and Lee, though he has lost some zip, is likely to win the selectors' backing, Johnson is the only one you'd bet your house on earning a spot in the first Test. He believes the competition can only be good for Australia.
"Siddle and Hilfenhaus did an extremely good job in South Africa for such young guys," Johnson told Cricinfo. "With all that talk that the depth of Australian bowling was nowhere, they came out and bowled really well. We have plenty of options with bowlers who do pretty different jobs, so the choice is definitely there."
The other option is to play four fast bowlers, although with England's powerful spin duo of Graeme Swann and Monty Panesar there must be a good chance that some of the pitches will offer plenty of turn. Ricky Ponting is convinced that it will be the conditions at each venue that will determine whether Hauritz plays, or if they rely on the part-time spin of Marcus North, Michael Clarke and Simon Katich.
"I've got no doubt that whichever way we decide to go - with a spinner in our side or without a spinner - that we're going to be ultra-competitive," Ponting said. "We've shown that in other countries around the world. If you look down our actual top-six batters we've got some guys there as well that can offer some really useful part-time spin options."
None of which gives the bowlers any real hints about who will play in Cardiff. Prepare for a bidding frenzy in the tour matches at Hove and Worcester.

The Ashes 2009
Katich the comeback king
Alex Brown
May 20, 2009
Simon Katich: "I don't actually sit and think about the 2005 Ashes too often. So much has changed since then" © AFP
The Ashes have not been kind to Simon Katich. After posting a modest 15 on debut at Headingley in 2001, he was cut adrift from the Australian side for more than two years. And following a 2005 campaign in which a series of poor umpiring decisions eroded already fragile confidence, Katich survived just two more Tests before selectors again banished him to the first-class wilderness for a further 30 months.
A less redoubtable personality might have relented after the latter episode, particularly as it coincided with the additional body blow of the loss of a central contract. But Katich is no such wallflower. Rather than bemoan his misfortune, he used the disappointment of 2005 as the catalyst to improve technique and temperament, and now stands poised to return to the Ashes fray in the relatively new role of opener.
"I guess I look at someone like Justin Langer - I remember on the 2001 tour that I was on, he missed out, and I remember him thinking at the time that that was it for him," Katich told Cricinfo. "He managed to reinvent himself and become a great opener. Given that he had batted at No. 3 pretty much most of his first-class career, I guess we're very similar in that regard. I batted pretty much my whole career at No. 3 and have now managed to get a chance opening the batting.
"It's probably been a bit of luck really, because I wouldn't have played in the West Indies if Matty Hayden hadn't have been injured and then obviously when Phil Jaques got injured the opportunities were both at the top of the order. It was a bit of luck and it probably helped me that I batted at the top of the order for so long in my career."
Luck had little to do with it. A day after Katich learned of his delisting by Cricket Australia, he plundered 221 for Derbyshire. And if that signal of intent was not clear enough, he followed with a record-breaking domestic season for New South Wales, during which he compiled an astonishing 1,506 runs at 94.12. The selectors, who had cut him at the age of 31, had little choice but to re-evaluate his case for national selection.
A year has passed since his Test recall in the Caribbean, and Katich, perhaps for the first time, feels at ease with his place in the side. His last 15 Tests have netted 1,389 runs at an impressive 53.42, including five centuries - as opposed to his 1,260 runs in his previous 23 appearances - and his combination with Phillip Hughes in South Africa provided Australia with a solid platform from which to launch their successful riposte to the home series defeat.
Unlike Ricky Ponting, Brett Lee and Michael Clarke, Katich was not afforded the opportunity to exorcise the demons of 2005 in Australia's ensuing 5-0 Ashes victory on home soil. And while he insisted redemption was not foremost on his mind ahead of the tour of England, Katich did concede extra sentiment would be attached to this series.
"I don't actually sit and think about [the 2005 Ashes] too often," he said. "So much has changed since then. I guess the only thing that does stick out is in that last Test at The Oval, even on that last day I still thought we were a chance to break even and get back to 2-all in the series. But England played well and deserved to win it.
"Obviously it was disappointing to lose last time and to play the way I did. I think going into this series, it is totally different for me as well because of the fact I'm playing a totally different role, opening the batting, which I'm comfortable with, given that I've always pretty much batted at the top of the order in first-class cricket. Even though I hadn't opened a lot I have gotten used to it, and I quite enjoy getting out there straight away now and knowing where I'm batting, rather than sitting around and waiting. I'm looking forward to hopefully having an impact compared to last time.
"I feel settled, but I also feel that in the last couple of years the hard work I did on my game when I was out of the team has started to pay off. I knew that when I was dropped I wasn't playing well enough and I knew I had to make improvements if I was going to get back to playing international cricket - not only volume of runs but also work on those areas that were costing me in the 2005 Ashes. It has helped me to become more consistent and keep making runs at that level. I know this will be a tough series, but I also go in with the confidence that I know I've been playing well the last year in Test cricket."
Katich's role in England will not be confined to batting. A reluctant left-arm wrist-spinner, Katich is now prepared to answer Ponting's call and lend slow-bowling support where required, as he did in the latter stages of the South Africa tour.
"There are no mystery balls. When you bowl full tosses and half-trackers and the odd good ball, it's a bit of a mixed bag"
Simon Katich
In that series, Katich, 33, surprised even himself by claiming five wickets at 10.80 in the final two Test matches. His performance in Cape Town was all the more notable for its contrast with Bryce McGain, who could scarcely keep the ball within the Newlands precinct in the face of AB de Villiers' brutal onslaught. The spell proved an awakening for both Ponting and Katich, and the latter has spent much of his time in the IPL working on his wrist-spin in the nets.
"There are no mystery balls," he quipped. "When you bowl full tosses and half-trackers and the odd good ball, it's a bit of a mixed bag. I've just been keeping it simple really - bowling plenty of leggies and the odd wrong'un here and there and just practising getting my action as consistent as possible.
"Since the Indian trip both Ricky and Tim Nielsen have wanted me to bowl lots in the nets and I've been doing that throughout the summer. That has varied depending on how much we've been playing and how I've been pulling up, but of late I've been doing quite a bit of bowling in the nets here in South Africa and I am continuing to do that. The body feels good, and I know I really enjoyed the opportunity to have a crack at the tail in South Africa. It's always a bit of an advantage as a spinner to get a crack at the tail, particularly if they can't pick your wrong'un. That worked to my advantage."
Around the time of Katich's infamous verbal tirade at Trent Bridge in 2005 - an incident that followed a dreadful lbw decision on 59 to Steve Harmison, and sent Australia spiralling towards a series-deciding defeat - Hughes was completing his Year 10 certificate at Macksville High School on the north coast of New South Wales. The comparison amuses Katich, the battle-scarred veteran, whose trials and tribulations at Test level contrast sharply with those of the free-scoring Hughes to date.
"The thing that he's got going for him is that he's got a great temperament," Katich said. "Nothing seems to faze him. Even after he got that duck [on debut in Johannesburg], he was disappointed but he didn't sit around and mope or anything. That's the beauty of the way he plays - he trusts his game, he knows it really well and he sticks to it. As much as people will look at him and think that he looks unique, he knows how he plays. He's been making a lot of runs for a long time and he's now just showing it at first class and Test level. I'm sure that he's going to have a great career.
"He doesn't say much. He gets in and gets the job done. The thing about the South African series was that their bowling attack is as good as we'll face in terms of quicks going around. They had four good quick options ... and a spinner who did a good job for them. He came up against as good as an opponent as he'll get early in his career and he came out of it with flying colours - because he's very talented and because he is so combative."

Leaving out Symonds is a big mistake. The OZ's sorely missed Symonds during their tour to India last year and I am of the opinion that they will miss him in Ashes too. He is a hard hitter and a useful bowler. Symonds should have been in the Squad.

The Ashes 2009
Hayden warns Australians on reverse-swing

Matthew Hayden has been retired for only six months but in that time has seen enough of Phillip Hughes to feel comfortable with Australia's opening combination for the Ashes. However, he has warned his former team-mates to prepare for a demanding battle with reverse-swing in a contest that could determine the direction of the urn.
While Hayden does not rate England's current attack as highly as the '05 version, he has predicted a tough time for Australia's batsmen and called on the top three of Hughes, Simon Katich and Ricky Ponting to set the platform and protect the middle order. "We saw reverse-swing come into the game last series and I expect to see the same thing this time," he said. "If we see No. 1 to No. 3 managing themselves nicely, it puts the middle order into a position where they can be a bit more comfortable against the reverse ball, and you do have to have that strength."
Four years ago Hayden was one of the many Australians mesmerised by the late movement from Flintoff, Harmison, Jones and Hoggard and it was only a century at The Oval that saved his career. He stepped down in January after 103 Tests and his spot was taken by Hughes, who scored two hundreds in his first three matches before a strong Ashes warm-up in the County Championship with Middlesex.
"He's got all the evidence and all the skill-sets he needs," Hayden said. "His humbling personality and how respectful he is are two elements of the baggy-green culture. He'll be fine."
However, Hayden reminded Hughes and Katich of the dangers of playing in the United Kingdom. "England is a challenging place for an opening combination," he said. "The engine room of cricket is No. 1 to No. 3 and they have to get off to a good start, but in England it's the most challenging time to bat."
While both teams fret over the make-up of their teams, Hayden also had a few questions about the side, wondering what would happen with Andrew McDonald and the allrounder's spot and how Australia would cope without Glenn McGrath and Shane Warne. One thing he wasn't in doubt over was the future of Brett Lee. "I think he is going to come back really strong and answer his critics," he said.
The men's team isn't the only national outfit to be in England over the next couple of months, with the women's side also contesting Test and one-day series and the National Indigenous Development Squad playing 11 games on a tour emulating the 1868 Aboriginal team. Hayden presented that squad with their caps in Brisbane on Friday before offering advice during their final training session before departure.
"The natural skills and ability of the boys is second to none," he said. "I will be absolutely baffled if Australia do not have an indigenous baggy-green player in the years to come."

ICC chief suggests four-day Tests
David Morgan, the ICC president, has hinted that Test cricket may be reduced to four days to protect and enrich the game's oldest format in the face of lucrative Twenty20 leagues like the IPL. The suggestion comes in the wake of a few other changes that are being mooted, including a two-tier format and day-night Tests to attract more crowds.
"Another thought that many people have, that we are examining is whether Test match cricket can be played over four days rather than five," Morgan told the India Today magazine. "I would be very surprised if within a year you haven't seen some significant changes in Test match cricket."
Morgan felt it wouldn't be too difficult for players to make a mental shift from five days to four. He added that Test cricket needed many more adjustments, and that special cricket balls would have to be made to facilitate night Tests in white clothing.
"We need better over-rates, better pitches that give a good balance between bat and ball and we need to consider day-night Test cricket," Morgan said. "There is great support for it, the issue is the colour of the ball and the quality of the ball. It would be a pity if Test match cricket - day-night - had to be played with a white ball and therefore coloured clothing.
"We are looking very closely at ball manufacturing design that replicates a red ball, maybe an orange ball, a ball that could still allow us to play in white clothing and still at night."
The two-tier structure was recently mooted by Dave Richardson, the ICC general manager for cricket, to divide the stronger and weaker teams and make the format more competitive. The ICC has also given the go ahead for the Umpire Decision Review System (UDRS) from October following trials in specific series over the last year. Umpires will have greater scope to decide on bad-light interruptions and the penalities for slow over-rates have also been increased.
With so much emphasis on Twenty20 and the enrichment of Test cricket, Morgan was very confident of the survival of the 50-over game in its current form, now with batting Powerplays and free-hits added to spice it up. He also defended the presence of the Champions Trophy in an already crowded calendar, despite calls for it to be scrapped.
The Champions Trophy, in South Africa in September, now features only the top eight teams and is a shorter tournament compared to previous editions.
"It will be played over a shorter period and we are certain it will rejuvenate the Champions Trophy brand," he said. "The brand needed polishing, rejuvenating, it needed remodeling and this event will be a very, very exciting and successful event I'm sure. It will be the event that will give fifty overs cricket its profile back, give it a boost without a doubt."

Dhoni’s honeymoon period over: Waugh
Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI: Steve Waugh thinks the time has come for Mahendra Singh Dhoni to take a couple of days break before re-assessing the responsibilities as a skipper in the coming season.
The former Australian captain, in the country to launch the India chapter of the Steve Waugh Foundation that works to make a difference in the lives of underprivileged children suffering from rare diseases, thought the best cure for the Indian captain was shut himself away for a few days before concentrating on the job on hand.
“Dhoni’s honeymoon period is over,” was how Waugh chose to describe the end of the Indian captain’s good run.
Waugh went on to make light of the premature exits of Australia and India from the ongoing T20 World Cup in England.
“It was quite clear that Australia and India were not sharp enough. In this format, all the teams are quite close to each other. There will be surprises. The team that is not sharp, will lose,” he said.
Ahead of the upcoming Ashes series, Waugh was clear that Australia no longer enjoyed the aura of invincibility but “they have good chances.”

Sridhar Siddle was also good, but wasn't lucky enough to get more wickets.... IMO Johnson was not gr8... Hilfenhaus was the pick of the lot...

Kalyan,
Vengayangal is a medium pace bowler right? Ya you are right, though Flintoff and Collingwood can bowl, one of them would be the 3rd bowler. Tough one for a test match!

Not only Sachin. We have other seniors in our team like Dravid who are already under pressure to retire but striking some form offlate. If they don't get enough test matches this year, not only they will be short of practice but they would be older. And there will be more demands of their retirement, if the ODI & T20 team succeeds during this gap, one might even see demands of playing yousuf pathan one down in test
In this way I am very happy that our team flopped in T20 WC

You got to be joking. Ponting(10960) is a real threat to Sachin(12773) in terms of number of centuries. And he is not far behind in terms of runs as well. He is 1813 runs short of sachin and he has whacked a 150 today. IMO, I can see him close the gap by another 500-700 (min-max) atleast by the end of this ashes.

Sachin must regret the thousand opportunities to capitalise on good form. 170'sla out aaradhu. 100 kitta tension aagi out aaradhu - I wish there were morr bhajjis in world cricket(ouch! Well said and thats the beauty of test cricket. This won't be understood by many outsiders and thats a pity.
This place has exploded! Australia cannot believe it, and every man in this ground is standing, applauding, cheering England's effort. Panesar can't wipe the smile off his face, and Australia, it's fair to say, look peeved, tired, exhausted and chastened. It's quite an unbelievable scene. "Tricky last couple of hours for us there," understates Anderson. "Amazing batting what he did today," says Monty of Collingwood. Moving on, quickly. But no, let's focus on Collingwood - an innings of such determination and grit to dig England out of a monumental hole.
Collingwood,

Ponting left fuming at England 'sportsmanship'
Australia captain Ricky Ponting slammed England for a lack of sportsmanship after a controversial conclusion to a dramatic drawn first Test here at Sophia Gardens.
Ashes-holders Australia were poised to go 1-0 up in the five-Test series before England's last-wicket duo James Anderson (21 not out) and Monty Panesar (seven not out) held out for the final 40 minutes to salvage an unlikely draw.
But twice during the 10th wicket pair's 69-ball stand, England 12th man Bilal Shafayat ran onto the field to offer Anderson batting gloves while physio Steve McCaig was eventually ordered off by the umpires after making it to the middle on the second occasion.
During the last Ashes series in Britain in 2005, which England won 2-1, Ponting became incensed at the hosts tactic of bringing on a 12th man just to give their fast bowlers a breather.
And he let fly on his way back into the pavilion at then England coach Duncan Fletcher after he was run out by substitute fielder Gary Pratt during Australia's fourth Test loss at Trent Bridge even though, on that occasion, fast bowler Simon Jones was off the field with a genuine injury.
Ponting kept his anger in check this time around but made his feelings plain to reporters after stumps.
"I don't think it was required. He (Anderson) changed (gloves) the over before," Ponting said. "I don't think they'd be too sweaty in one over.
"I'm not sure what the physio was doing, I didn't see anyone call for the physio, as far as I'm concerned, it was pretty ordinary really.
"But they can play whatever way they want to play. We came to play by the rules and the spirit of the game, eppudi maapla vekkame illama pesiputta it's up to them to do what they want to do."
"I was unhappy with it," Ponting, man-of-the-match for his 150 in Australia's only innings of 674 for six declared, said. "I don't want to make that big a deal of it. It's not the reason we didn't win."
There had been two flashpoints earlier in the day which suggested tempers were fraying.
Before play got underway, England batsman Kevin Pietersen and Australia quick Mitchell Johnson clashed while both teams were warming up on the outfield and during the match itself Stuart Broad and Victoria pace bowler Peter Siddle appeared to be involved in a shoulder-barging incident.
But Ponting played down the impact of both dust-ups, saying of the former: "It was a case of a few guys on the ground taking each others' space."
And, as for the second, which was dealt with by umpire Billy Doctrove, Ponting said: "He handled it and got on top of it pretty quickly.
"It was probably accidental. Move on. It was a great game of cricket and we should be remembering that."
Ponting also defended his decision to bowl part-time spinner Marcus North in the closing stages, rather than fast bowler Mitchell Johnson - Australia's spearhead in the absence of the injured Brett Lee - on the grounds he wanted to get in as many deliveries as he could at the 10th wicket pair.
England, who needed 239 to make Australia bat again, finished on 252 for nine at stumps and Ponting said: "We were running a bit short on time, once they got ahead.
Australia were the dominant side for most of this contest, the first Test ever staged in Wales.
Ponting led from the front in a batting display where further hundreds from North (125 not out), Simon Katich (122) and Brad Haddin (121) saw four Australians score centuries in the same Test innings against England for the first time.
England were clearly buoyed by coming away with a draw that owed plenty to Paul Collingwood's painstaking innings of 74, which spanned nearly six hours after he'd come in with his side in desperate trouble Sunday at 46 for four.
Back in 2005, Australia saw last wicket duo Lee and Glenn McGrath save the Old Trafford Test only for their team to ultimately lose the series.
Ponting warned England against getting carried away ahead of the second Test which starts on Thursday at Lord's - a ground where Australia haven't lost a Test since 1934.
"I'm not sure if they look at it like a win, they're not 1-0 up, they've been outplayed for four days," Ponting said.
"They'll have more soul-searching and selection issues than we will. We know what we've done so well here and we can take a lot of confidence from that.
"All the batsmen looked exceptionally good and the bowlers toiled hard on a surface that offered nothing. We've got to realise how well we've played."

Ashes - 2nd Test Day 1 - Lords
Ashes - 2nd Test Day 1 - Lords
Day one almost belonged to England but they would have settled for 2 wickets less. 364-6 is extremely good in terms of runs and England captain Strauss was the man of the day. Cook missed out on a fantastic century when he was trapped plum lbw at 95 off Johnson who was punished through out the morning. Ravi Bopara played some fine drives on the off-side reminiscent of Indian players but he too was out to a very good ball. Pietersen (32 off 42 balls) wasted another good start and Collingwood must be kicking himself for throwing away a simple catch to Siddle. Andrew Flintoff's bad time with the bat continues. For the Australian side Siddle was very good swinging the ball in both the ways and he was unlucky in the morning session. Hilfenhaus was good too.
P.S: Nice to see Stephen Rodger Waugh and Adam Gilchrist as spectators. Shane Warne was one of the commentators along with Nasser Hussain and Mike Atherton. Game on and I am sure we have a result in this one.

Katich - Not out, it was a noball from Flintoff
Hussey - Not out again. Snickometer and hot spot shows no contacts with the bat.
Hughes also not out. The ball clearly touched the ground and for the first time I am with Ponting in asking for a replay. But the square-leg umpire made a mistake in juding that Strauss took the catch cleanly. I don't understand why umpires don't go for the replay directly even when there is an iota of a doubt. When you have the technology just use it man.

CR, spot-on.
Nerd, to me, it looks inevitable that Ponting will play atleast another 3 years, and break all of Sachin's records - infact, I doubt if he has to wait until Sachin's retirment for these. Century gap is only 4. This might be wiped out even before the end of Ashes series!
And whatever he is - as a batsman, he is too good for England.
Given BCCI's policy of staging 1 test to about 10 ODIs and 5 T20's, Sachin is not going to get too many more test runs or centuries. I think it is fairly clear that he is not going to get 50 test centuries.
Ok, coming back to Ponting, the reason I believe Australia will win is that I believe Ponting is destined to take these records - and if he loses this series, he will lose captaincy and may have to retire. I kind of *believe* thats not going to happen - so work backwards on that, and I believe Oz will not lose this series. Unfortunately.
As CR says, the wounded tiger will be even more dangerous.

The single most silliest reason why i hated sennai that year.
. It happened the same even a year later or before i guess and then BCCI dropped the idea of hosting test matches in november in chennai.
Sehwag was in awesome form and he already cracked a 30 odd out of that 230 something total. Commentators for that match were actually saying that he was enquiring when was the next flight to delhi the next day as he had some serious business to attend.
.
P.S: For all his technical shortcomings I just love shewag for his approach of the game and taking it on to the opposition.

Australia face difficult task forcing a result at Edgbaston

Weather and pitch conditions could conspire against the Australians in their quest for a series-levelling victory at Edgbaston. Rain is forecast for the West Midlands for each of the next four days, with particularly heavy storms predicted for Wednesday, the eve of the third Ashes Test, and Thursday. And even if the players do make it onto the field for extended periods, That sucks.
Rcent history suggests Ricky Ponting's men could find it difficult to force their way back into the series on a pitch that has played host to 16 draws from its past 20 first class matches.
Only once this season has a county team achieved victory in Birmingham, and then only on account of a sublime fast bowling performance from Graham Onions and Steve Harmison. The Durham pacemen, both of whom have been named in England's 13-man squad for the third Ashes Test, claimed a combined 16 wickets to lead Durham to a win over Warwickshire in June, however the six other first-class matches played at the ground this year have resulted in draws.
One of those matches, England's pre-Ashes warm-up match against Warwickshire, was a rare bright point for seamers at Edgbaston. James Anderson took full advantage of the green-tinged pitch to claim five first innings wickets, however his efforts were not enough to force a result in the three-day contest.
Despite his recent success at Edgbaston, Anderson was expecting a benign Test strip. "It's generally quite slow and low and I'm guessing it will be similar to Cardiff, which isn't great from an entertainment point of view or a bowler's point of view," Anderson said. "To be honest, Test pitches around the world are getting pretty similar. As bowlers we're quite used to it and just have to try and work out how to get 20 wickets on these sort of pitches."
Ravi Bopara was another to have excelled during England's warm-up match against Warwickshire, scoring 43 and 104 retired, and he too predicted a gruelling match against the Australians.
"It might be," Bopara said. "But that's where a good spinner comes in to bowl a lot of overs and produce some good spells where he takes a wicket or two to break up partnerships. I think Hauritz has bowled really well. He started off the tour really well. We certainly don't underestimate him. Again, our boys have had recent success as well. Swann's bowled well against the West Indies and Monty Panesar is back on the scene as well. Facing him in the nets, he's been top drawer. It's probably going to be one of those toils ... and go down to the wire."
The Australians, however, are taking nothing for granted regarding the Edgbaston surface, having famously been duped into bowling first at the ground four years ago in a match England won by two runs. Despite recent comments from Steve Rouse, the Edgbaston curator, stating that recent rain had left the pitch "like jelly", Tim Nielsen, the Australian coach, said his side would reserve judgement on the make-up of their bowling attack until they had closely inspected the surface first-hand.
"We'll have a look at the conditions when we get to Edgbaston and work it out," Nielsen said. "We're hearing that the wicket isn't very progressed in its preparation. We'll have a look at what the weather is doing."
Local bookmakers have installed the draw as the most likely result in the match.

Strauss wary of Australia backlash
Peter English at The Oval
July 27, 2009
Text size: A | A
'We are expecting an Aussie backlash and we expect this Test to be harder than the other two we've played' © Associated Press
Related LinksPlayers/Officials: Andrew Strauss
Series/Tournaments: Australia tour of England and Scotland
Teams: Australia | England
Habits of a lifetime are difficult to change for Andrew Strauss, who despite England's strong Ashes position believes it's too dangerous to glance ahead. In past years, series involving these teams hadn't started before the predictions of convincing victories occurred, although those were usually made by players named Warne, McGrath or Waugh. Those Ashes heroes have left and England find themselves 1-0 ahead against Australia's weakest team in more than 20 years.
It is now the hosts with the momentum after their history-breaking win at Lord's, but not the faith to say in public what they privately believe. Australia are vulnerable, particularly with their mis-firing bowling, and despite losing Kevin Pietersen, the hosts will be boosted by the sort of crowd support not received since 2005. These strong feelings and omens have not moved Strauss, who would not allow himself to show the self-belief of England's former conquerors.
"I'm never confident enough to predict anything," he said. "It's a dangerous route to go down." When on top, some sides see further opportunities to gain an advantage, others see risk. Strauss's main aim in the lead-up to Thursday's third Test is to ward off complacency.
He said the Lord's Test was one of the best team performances he had been involved in with England. "You gain a huge amount of confidence winning an Ashes Test," he said. "I'm looking forward to this week, there will be a nice feeling in the camp. We can't let that feeling become a sense of complacency, it's something we've got to be very guarded against. We have three Tests to go, if we play three good Tests we've got the potential to win an Ashes series."
It all sounded very pleasant, just what an Australian would expect at an English sponsorship announcement. For the next four years Brit Insurance will appear on the team's shirts, but there is no assurance of further success. Not even from the captain.
"We are expecting an Aussie backlash and we expect this Test to be harder than the other two we've played," Strauss said. "We're excited about that, and we're excited to be ahead in an Ashes series, but we know that that can change quickly. If we're not right on, then there can problems."
He did tell his men not to take the foot off the pedal at Edgbaston and believed they had strong form in that department. "In the past five or six months there have been some good performances and we've been quite clinical when we've got on top," he said. "I was very confident we could get over the line [at Lord's], the key now is to go right back to first principles and how we set up the game."
Problems exist in the absence of Kevin Pietersen with an Achilles injury and the limping caused by Andrew Flintoff's right knee. Flintoff will bowl in the nets on Tuesday, when England will know whether his fitness will be an issue for the back-to-back Tests in Birmingham and Leeds. "At this stage we're very confident," Strauss said.
Ian Bell will take Pietersen's place at No. 4 to limit the disruptions to a team that will consider bringing in Steve Harmison on a pitch threatening to be underprepared. A report has suggested Harmison will join Flintoff in retirement at the end of the series, but he currently has not played a match and his best chance will occur if Flintoff is injured. Strauss had heard nothing about Harmison walking away and is not concerned about the pitch.
He is more worried about Australia's attack, which is wobbling more than a toddler. After years spent facing Glenn McGrath and Shane Warne, England's batsmen have their easiest task for two decades. "It's dangerous to make those assumptions after two Tests," Strauss said. "We've played on two very flat pitches and things this week might be completely different. Whenever you play an Australian side they are always strong. They may not have Warne or McGrath, but they look pretty good." Danger lurks everywhere, apparently.

Anderson backs Johnson to shine again

Mitchell Johnson has found the unlikeliest of allies as he attempts to retain his place in the Australian line-up for the Edgbaston Test. James Anderson, the spearhead of the England attack, expressed supreme confidence that his opposite number would not only play in the third Test, but emerge from his extended form slump to again trouble England's batsmen.
"If I'd have had 18 months like he had, then two bad games, I would not expect to get dropped for the next game," Anderson said. "As a bowler, you do go through varying bits of forms. The last 18 months he's been the best bowler by a country mile for Australia and all their success has pretty much centred around him. For him to have a couple of bad Tests and for people to be getting on his back is a bit harsh. He's just going through a bit of a dodgy patch, and I think he's a good enough bowler to come through the other side."
Johnson's demoralising outing against Northamptonshire, in which he managed a solitary tailend wicket and conceded runs at almost six-per-over, has prompted speculation that he could be demoted from the Australian XI to accommodate the dependable Stuart Clark at Edgbaston. Such a move would hand Australia the unenviable task of overhauling their bowling blueprints mid-series, given that much of their planning had centred on Johnson thriving in the role of attack spearhead.
In four first-class matches on tour, Johnson has taken 12 wickets at an average of 50.33 with an economy rate of 4.44. His dismissal of David Wigley to close out the three-day match against Northam ended a 35-over wicketless streak that extended back to the first innings at Lord's, and his general inaccuracy has made it difficult for the Australians to build pressure in the field.
Still, despite Johnson's struggles, Ravi Bopara is expecting the left-armer to play at Edgbaston from Thursday. Bopara is acutely aware of Johnson's latent potential, having fallen to him in the first innings at Cardiff, and, like Anderson, believes the Australian paceman will turn his form around.
"He's proven himself at international cricket," Bopara said. "He's done it against South Africa, who are No. 2 in the world. For us, yes it is good that he hasn't quite done as well as he probably started off in South Africa. But good cricketers always bounce back.
"Personally, I'm budgeting on him being there. He's a strike bowler. If he's not, he's not. I'm not going to look too far into it. The game doesn't start until Thursday. I'll worry about it at 10.58am."
Bopara added that England had not discussed Johnson's negative body language, which has been so down at times that Tim Nielsen, the Australian coach, felt compelled to address it after the Lord's Test. "It's a natural thing in cricket," Bopara said. "If things ain't going your way, it's very hard to stay upbeat. You're just kidding yourself really. We've played enough cricket to know if the other team are going really well it's going to be difficult to keep jumping around and buzzing around. That's just the way it is."
The Australians have rallied around Johnson in the aftermath of the Lord's Test, deflecting media and public criticism at every opportunity. Brad Haddin is the latest to offer his backing to his out-of-form teammate, noting that Johnson was still pounding the gloves on tour.
"He's had a very successful two years, his bowling was outstanding in South Africa," Haddin said. "He is still taking wickets for us and in his game he still feels pretty comfortable so I don't see that much of a difference. Obviously it was different conditions in South Africa that allowed the ball to swing a bit more and we're using different balls here that are probably starting to swing a bit later. From where I'm standing his pace is still up and it's all pretty good."

Strauss confirms Bell will bat at No.4

Andrew Strauss expects Andrew Flintoff to be fit for the third Ashes Test against Australia at Edgbaston on Thursday, and has confirmed that Ian Bell will bat at No.4 in place of the injured Kevin Pietersen.
Flintoff, who retires from Test cricket at the end of the Ashes, continues to struggle with a chronic knee injury which has threatened to hasten his retirement. But Strauss has been encouraged by Flintoff's fitness and remains confident that England's allrounder will be fit enough to once again lead the attack.
"All the indications are that Andrew will be fine. We need to see how he goes over the next couple of days during practice," said Strauss at The Oval, where England announced their new team sponsors, Brit Insurance. "But at this stage we are very confident and obviously he will want to build on his performance at Lord's.
"I spoke to him the day after the second Test at a charity dinner and he said then he was recovering well. That's encouraging. He won't have bowled until practice tomorrow but has been in constant contact with our medical team. "When you've had as many injuries as him you get a good indication of how you're feeling. Everything we've heard so far has been positive."
Flintoff produced a typically talismanic final-day effort at Lord's last week, taking five wickets for just the third time in his career as England ended a 75-year wait to beat Australia at the home of cricket. But while England can be heartened by Flintoff's news, another instrumental player, Pietersen, has been ruled out of the series after undergoing Achilles surgery.
Strauss confirmed that his replacement, Bell, will bat at No.4 instead of shuffling the line-up to accommodate him.
"Ian Bell will come in for Pietersen at four. We're very clear on that," said Strauss. "It causes the least possible disruption to other members of the side.
"We're all very excited for Ian. He was left out of the team and had to work very hard to get his place back. "He's done a huge amount of work on and off the field. He's very hungry. We're excited to have him back in the team."
Bell was dropped earlier this year after a string of inconsistent performances, with Ravi Bopara taking his place at No.3. Bopara may not have set the Ashes alight, yet, but Bell - who himself has struggled against Australia in his two previous Ashes appearances - is confident he is in the right frame of mind, and in good enough form, to make the most of this surprise opportunity.
"Of all the countries I've played, I've played well apart from against Australia. I know that - it's in the back of my mind," he told Sky Sports News. "This is a different Australian team than I've played in the past, but a very fine one as well. But cricket's a stats game, and I've got those stats to put right and to improve on."
Shane Warne reignited an old friendship with Bell today when he wrote in his Times column that he hoped Bell's return to England colours "will hopefully be greeted with 'welcome back, Shermanator', the nickname I gave him in 2006."

Ponting looking beyond Border's record

Matches: England v Australia at Birmingham

Ricky Ponting is 25 runs from becoming Australia's leading scorer and the third most prolific in Tests, but he has greater team pursuits to achieve this week in Birmingham as his side attempts to level the Ashes series. Ponting starts the match sitting on 11,150 and while Allan Border's 15-year-old national mark is the initial target, the current captain wants much more.
"Twenty-five runs is not what I am after in this game," he said. "I am after a big score."
Ponting opened the series with 150 in Cardiff but managed 2 and 38 at Lord's when the record seemed set to fall. "I have known about it since the beginning of the series," he said. "Things came up on the board during the first Test, given I went past 11,000 and all of that stuff. So I have had a rough idea, but I have not thought about it or focused on it at all. I have bigger fish to fry than that right at the moment."
As captain, Ponting has become so important to his young team that he can act as a barometer for their success. When he scores heavily the side can breathe easily, but when he fails they are often left gasping. Only once since becoming the leader in 2004 has he registered a century and Australia have lost, with the blemish coming against South Africa in Melbourne late last year.
Seventeen hundreds have resulted in wins or draws as captain and have boosted his run tally to the sort of numbers only the true greats can achieve. Sachin Tendulkar currently leads with 12,773 in 159 games while Lara reached 11,953 in 131 matches. Ponting, whose average of 56.31 beats all but Garry Sobers in the top 20, will play his 134th Test on Thursday, 22 fewer than Border managed during his 16-year career.
"Hopefully it comes," Ponting said of the record. "It would be nice to get it out of the way in the first innings of this game and put that behind us."
Michael Clarke, the vice-captain, said Ponting was somebody everyone in the team looked up to. "If anyone deserves to overtake Allan Border, it's Ricky Ponting," he said. "He's been an amazing player for such a long time in all forms of the game, in all conditions around the world, to me that's a sign of great players. I see Ricky as one of the greatest players I've played with, and one of the greatest players to play the game."
Ponting missed the tour match against Northamptonshire over the weekend and his time off included attending the first birthday of his daughter Emmy. "A couple of days away from cricket is always nice when we have been as busy as we have been," he said. "It has normally worked pretty well for me when I have had a break, I have generally played okay. The break actually came at a good time for a lot of us."
Australia experienced similar stress during the 2005 tour, a series which started to turn when Ponting won the toss and bowled in the second Test at Edgbaston. England raced to 407 on the first day and eventually sealed a two-run win that grew into a 2-1 victory.
Ponting, who has lost both coin tosses in this series, said the decision of four years ago would not influence him on Thursday morning. "I will do what I think is right to do on the day," he said. "There might be overhead conditions to tell us what I should do, which was what I did in 2005. No, it won't have any bearing on it."
He said Australia relished the situation of being behind and would enjoy clawing their way back into the contest. "I think we all do," he said. "Australian teams always do that and that was the pleasing thing that came out in the second half of the Lord's Test. We had been comprehensively outplayed on the first two days but the way we fought out the last couple of days, it said a lot about the Australian spirit." They feel they have something to prove over the next week.

Eng will be all out for less than 200.
The upshot of this is that despite the washed out first day, there will be a result - whereas if Australia had batted until 3rd day Lunch, then England might have tried saving the match and retaining 1-0 lead.
Looks like 1-1 at the end of this match...

Very good innings by England´s mid and tailend batsmen. From 168/5 to 376 all out was a very good team effort from all the batsmen. Esp. Fred, Matt Prior and Stuart Broad.
Answereing a lead of 113 runs Aussies are 57 for 2 with Punter clean bowled by Swann for 5.
Here is what Cricinfo says about punters dismissal:
Here's Ponting. Booed to the crease. Again. Poor bloke.
14.6
Swann to Ponting, OUT, oh what a ball - what a delivery! Tossed up, dragged him forward and sharp spin turns through the gate to hit his stumps! Fantastic over and a brilliant piece of bowling to remove Ponting

absolutely. Just because Australia play a fixed number of tests at home every year...
What's Ponting's record in England? Average. Surprising? Hardly, he is not equipped to handle swing.
In India? Poor. Spin. Enough said.
How the hell can he be even thought of in the same sentence as BCL and SRT?

The Ashes - England v Australia 2009 / News
Return of illegal bookmakers
Australia report bookie approach to ICC
Alex Brown
August 18, 2009
Cricket's recent trysts with bookmakers
February 2007: Nagpur Police accuses Marlon Samuels of giving out team information to an alleged bookie, Mukesh Kochar. Police releases a transcript of the conversation between Samuels and Kochar, and the ICC bans Samuels for two years.
October 2008: Two ICL players are suspended from the league amid widespread speculation over match-fixing, though the ICL says they are suspended on "disciplinary grounds".
July 2009: Pakistan players complain of the presence of "suspicious characters" in their team hotel in Colombo during a Test series. The team management gets their rooms changed, and the ICC's ACSU clears Pakistan of any contact with bookies.
August 2009: An audio tape of a phone conversation between Mohammad Illyas, a Pakistan senior selector, and Salim Altaf, the PCB's chief operating officer, alludes to match-fixing in the ICL. Illyas, father-in-law of Imran Farhat who played in the ICL, accuses senior Lahore Badshahs players of having fixed matches.
The Australian team management has filed a report with the ICC's Anti-Corruption and Security Unit after a player was approached by a man suspected of links to illegal bookmaking. Cricinfo has learned the approach was made in the bar of the team's London hotel, the Royal Kensington Garden, following Australia's Ashes defeat at Lord's in July.
The player alerted senior officials immediately and, following ICC protocol, team manager Steve Bernard filed a report with the ACSU. The matter is currently under investigation. The player is not suspected of wrongdoing, and has been praised by a senior ICC official for his prompt reporting of the approach in line with the ACSU's player education programme.
Sources within the ICC and the Australian team, when contacted by Cricinfo, described the approach as "concerning" and part of a worrying resurgence in the presence of illegal bookmakers around major events. Sir Paul Condon, the chairman of the ACSU, told ICC meetings in Dubai and London over the past year that Twenty20 cricket posed the greatest corruption threat to the game since the dark days of Sharjah in the 1990s; a notion supported by recent media and anecdotal reports.
Cricinfo understands the ACSU is investigating additional approaches made to players by illegal bookmakers, or conduits acting on their behalf, during the ICC World Twenty20 tournament in England earlier this summer. One source said the ACSU was "well advanced" in several lines of inquiry, at least one of which also involved approaches made to players at a team hotel.
Senior officials are concerned that illegal bookmakers, emboldened by the new betting possibilities opened up by the Twenty20 game, are becoming increasingly prevalent around match venues and team hotels. After the inception of the ACSU in 2000 - in direct response to the match-fixing scandals involving international captains Hansie Cronje, Mohammed Azharuddin and Salim Malik - barriers were established to block bookmakers and their intermediaries from direct contact with players. But the approach to an Australian player during an Ashes series, coupled with those allegedly made to other international cricketers at the World Twenty20, have raised concerns that a new wave of corrupting influences is attempting to infiltrate the game.
A report in the Sunday Telegraph earlier this week, quoting an anonymous ICC source, warned that cricket was under renewed threat from illegal bookmakers. "Those in charge in the ICC understand that Twenty20 cricket has the danger of going back to the bad old days," the source said.
The report suggested that the apparent resurgence in contact from illegal bookmakers was in part attributable to the second IPL, a tournament at which the ACSU was not in operation, reportedly due to its $1.2 million operational bill. Lalit Modi, the IPL's commissioner, told Cricinfo last month the ACSU would be involved in future IPL tournaments, and an agreement in principle has been reached for the unit to police the Champions League Twenty20, scheduled to be played in India this October. "They have expanded their services and going ahead, all the tournaments, including Champions League and the IPL would have the presence of ICC's anti-corruption unit," Modi said, in a move welcomed by the ICC's chief executive Haroon Lorgat.
Lorgat last week announced there was "absolutely no substance" to reports that Pakistan players had been approached by illegal bookmakers at their team hotel in Colombo during the recent series against Sri Lanka. The matter was investigated by the ACSU.
"The ICC and its members have a zero-tolerance approach to corruption and rightly so because the integrity of our sport with its spirit is one of its greatest assets," Lorgat said. "On that basis it is entirely appropriate that any suggestions in relation to that subject are always reported to and properly investigated by the ACSU. I am pleased those investigations have indicated nothing untoward has taken place on this occasion but it is a reminder that all of us - players, officials and supporters - must maintain our vigilance to ensure we remain on top of the issue of corruption."

Swann to Clark, OUT, erm. Oh dear. We've had some shockers this summer, but that takes the biscuit and the tin. Clark pats forward, bat nowhere near the ball which takes the top of his pad, ballooning to silly point...and up goes the finger. In the umpire's defence, the bat flicked the pad, so he obviously heard something...

And there's the tiny little urn on a pedestal, Strauss collects it, the champagne flies, fireworks, the lot! Scenes of jubilation at The Oval, and it's worth noting that
Australia have slipped to fourth on the ICC Test rankings list, England are fifth.

What a victory!!
I think the two quick run-out's was the turning point of this game.
Vetrigaramaaga Australia stepped down to 4th place.
Nevertheless their 2005 victory was their best triumph, though the victory margin is similar to this year, the team which they defeated was the strongest and peerless (Langer/Hayden/Ponting//Martyn/Clarke/Katich/Gilchrist/Warne/Lee/Mcgrath/Tait).

Hurt Ponting may return to England
http://www.cricinfo.com/engvaus2009/...ry/421865.html
Ponting said the sting of defeat at The Oval on Sunday was every bit as painful as that he felt at the same ground four years ago. "I don't think you can get any more disappointed than I am right now," he said. "Looking back at 2005, I was feeling exactly the same back then. We all spoke about it and built the series up so much...but we've come up short. I'm obviously hurting, the rest of the guys are hurting as well.
"For me, the leader, the captain, the most experienced player, it's difficult for me to accept. It's just as difficult for the rest of the guys. We couldn't have done anything else, we have given ourselves the best opportunity. Just a couple of really bad sessions during the course of five Tests have cost us the series. When we were been good we were exceptional, when we were bad we were very poor. We need to become more consistent in our performances across the board."

Long, lonely journey for a downhearted captain
Some time on Tuesday, Ricky Ponting will slip into a business class seat at Heathrow airport for the long, long flight home, alone with his thoughts for a full 24 hours.
It will not be a happy journey.
In all likelihood he will ask the flight attendant for a bourbon and coke to help wash the away the last traces of grit from that
awful dusty pitch at The Oval. (
ippo nee thOkalanguriya? )
It won't, however, wash away the regret and dismay he will feel at becoming the first Australian captain to travel to England twice with the Ashes and come home without them.
Billy Murdoch lost two Ashes series in England in 1884 and 1890, but each time England were already the holders.
The blame for this latest debacle is not Ponting's alone, but as captain he is the one who bears the responsibility, and he is the one who will have to face the music back home.
In truth, he'll be glad to get out of London, where every joyous headline and every smiling English face will seem like a stab to the heart.
London, after all, is the scene of the two Test match losses that cost Australia the series.
In the second Test at Lord's, one mad session with the ball ended a proud 75-year unbeaten record at the home of cricket.
In the final Test at The Oval, one mad session with the bat cost his team the Ashes.
Even Ponting's valiant attempt to hold back the tide on the last day ended in a moment of madness. Mike Hussey called him for a sharp single, the captain hesitated and was run out by his nemesis of 2005, Andrew Flintoff.
It was a b*****d of a way for it to end.
Before he left for England, Ponting wrote in a pre-tour souvenir guide: "I can tell you that winning an Ashes series in England is one thing I desperately want to achieve as captain".
Well, he hasn't, and is now unlikely to, something that seemed unthinkable when Steve Waugh handed him the reins of a virtually unbeatable team in early 2004.
Ponting has achieved everything else in cricket. His stature as a batsman remains peerless. During this series he surpassed Allan Border as Australia's greatest run-scorer in Tests, and his gravity-defying average (55.88) is the highest of the game's leading run-scorers.
His legacy as a captain, however, remains problematic. Despite some imposing statistics, it will always be both defined and scarred by the Ashes series of 2005 and 2009.
In truth, Australians find it difficult to make up their minds about their 42nd Test captain.
We've been watching him for a long time, but it's hard to feel that we know him.
His predecessors over the past quarter of a century - Allan Border, Mark Taylor and Steve Waugh - all became darlings of the wider community; indeed all three were honoured as Australian of the Year.
Ponting is from a different mould, allowing us no real insights into the man behind the determined expression. There's respect, certainly, but not so much affection.
Right now, however, it takes a hard heart not to feel for him.

Raghu did you even follow the match/series.
It is indeed a very important victory with both teams having niggles. Without KP they were agonizing for the person to fill the slot. They pick a nobody and he makes a century on debut. England have every reason to celebrate.
Strauss, Broad, Swann everyone chipped in. They contributed even more than Flintoff - who naturally received plenty of media attention as it was his last match.

well I did, most of it, only on Highlights, but they way these English make a big deal out of petty things is seriously insane, I have lived here for nearly 20 years, so I have a better understanding of them than those who are not!
Do you know some thing, they boasted about the ashes in 2005, but they were quiet when they got a 5-0 thrashing in 2007, KP is most hyped joker in this Game, Look at his average in tests, ODI and 20/20 it is just average!
Yes I agree broad was good, as well as Andrew, but they don’t have super* in their team, yet they boast like that, I feel they should just close their mouth and get on with their game, Cant wait for SA to thrash them

Toss news: Strass flicks, Clarke calls tails, England win the toss and will bowl "actually," says Strauss. Wright will bat No.6. Any football today? "It was just a solid, professional warm-up this morning," smiles Strauss, like a brazen legend. Clarke was going to bat anyway, he says

Ponting retires from T20 Internationals
Australia captain Ricky Ponting has quit Twenty20 International cricket in a bid to prolong his career in the Test and limited-overs formats.
The 34-year-old Ponting skipped two T20 internationals in England to return home following Australia's Ashes Test series loss to England last month. He made his announcement about T20 cricket on Monday, ahead of his return flight to England for the end of the seven-match ODI series which Australia leads 2-0.
"The last 10 or 12 days for me have been a lot about reflection, looking back to the Ashes and looking forward to my playing future," said Ponting, Australia's leading runscorer in Test and one-day cricket. "As of today I've decided to retire from international Twenty20 cricket. The decision I've made is all to do with my longevity in the game."
Ponting's decision goes against a recent trend for older players to retire from Test cricket to specialize in T20, the newest and shortest form of the game. It is expected he will remain contracted to Kolkata in the Indian Premier League, which is classified as a domestic T20 tournament despite its array of star players from around the world.
Ponting said he'd discussed his decision with chairman of selectors Andrew Hilditch, Australia coach Tim Nielsen and vice-captain Michael Clarke.
"This decision provides me the opportunity to prolong my Australian Test and one-day career, an opportunity I am extremely determined about," Ponting said. "I am hoping to continue playing Test cricket for as long as possible and retiring from the Twenty20 format gives me the best chance of doing this."
Australia lost the Ashes 2-1 last month with defeat in the fifth and final Test at The Oval, slipping from No. 1 to No. 4 in the international Test rankings.
There were calls from some critics for Ponting to be fired after he became only the second Australia captain to lose two Test series in England.
But he almost immediately set his sights on returning to England for the 2013 Ashes series, as captain or just as a batsman, regardless of how the return series in Australia plays out in the 2010-11 season.
He even speculated at the time about the idea of giving up the captaincy in one of the forms of the game to concentrate on Test cricket.
Cricket Australia chief executive James Sutherland said he understood the reasons behind Ponting's decision to quit Twenty20.
"Needless to say he will be a huge loss to the Twenty20 side, but it does present opportunities for the other players and leaders within Australian cricket to gain further experience," Sutherland said.
Cricket Australia said a decision regarding Ponting's replacement as captain of the Twenty20 side will be made later in the year. Michael Clarke led Australia in Ponting's absence in England.
Australia's next Twenty20 International will be held Feb. 5 against T20 world championship winner Pakistan at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
Ponting has played 136 Test matches for Australia, scoring 38 centuries, behind only India's Sachin Tendulkar, who has 42.
He has scored 11,345 Test runs at an average of 55.88. He has also played 315 limited-overs matches, scoring 11,523 runs at an average of 42.52.

How many T20Is do Australia play in a year anyway? If he was serious about reducing wear and tear, he should have retired from ODIs but I guess with 2011 so close, none of the senior players want to announce ODI retirment yet.
Nevertheless, I think Ponting is bucking the trend and preparing to play under Clarke so as to have a tilt at Sachin's records, me thinks.

Actually, indha 7-0 scoreline should first have been achieved by India(Dhoni's team
). Unfortunate events disturbed that last year. Now, Oz will win 7-0 and another 100 years, they will run about praising this achievement. Idhukku pEru dhAnga luck - adhAvadhu, when you attribute luck to someone, it doesnt mean that you are implying no-talent-only-luck; it just means that talent+luck has more success than talent +no-luck. This is what most Sachin fans claim w.r.t Dhoni but are ridiculed.
Now, I am going to root for Aussies and claim that Oz is better than India because they won 7-0, while India couldnt, completely ignoring the fact that Australia were lucky to face England 7 times while India werent.

New players like White, Swann are bright prospects for international cricket if they continue to perform well.

Although irrelevant to this thread/series this particular comment of Maddy is still relevant.
"Over the past five years, 27 Tests have been played in Australia. Only two have been drawn. In South Africa, only three of 29 games did not end decisively. In that same period, Sri Lanka have hosted 22 games. Only four have gone the distance. And India? Ahmedabad was the 24th match in the last 60 months, and the 11th to end in a draw"
A unique hat-trick of deplorable pitches was completed in Chennai a few months later, as Neil McKenzie, Hashim Amla and Sehwag booked in for bed, breakfast and then some. Sehwag scored the fastest triple-century ever, but even when the teams mercifully shook hands on the final day, the pitch looked good enough to last another week.
Dead pitches killing Tests in India
