Dhoni may not keep for CSK
TIMES NEWS NETWORK
Chennai: It’s been a hectic schedule for Mahendra Singh Dhoni and the Chennai Super Kings team management may well relieve him of the wicketkeeping duties when they start their Champions Challenge campaign on December 4.
With Parthiv Patel in the squad and most likely to open the innings with Matthew Hayden, it’s likely that he will double up as the ‘keeper as well. “Dhoni is the best wicketkeeper-batsman but he will be more useful in the outfield. If Parthiv (Patel) plays as an opener, he will keep the wickets. He did a reasonably good work in the IPL. We have the option of more than one player to keep the wickets with Hussey also being there,” team director VB Chandrasekar said.
However, CSK won’t be able to avail the services of all-rounder Jacob Oram, who went back home from Bangladesh after suffering an injury. As for Morkel and Hussey, who decided to play for Chennai Super Kings in the Champions League instead of their domestic sides, Chandrasekar said that as per rules the IPL franchise has the first right of opting for the player. “They had to be playing for us. In the bargain we had to shell out $200,000 to Nashua Titans (for Morkel) and Western Australia (for Hussey) — both teams will take part in the Champions League — as per rules,” he said.
THE SQUAD: MS Dhoni (captain), M. Hayden, M. Hussey, S. Raina, A. Morkel, S. Badrinath, C. Kapugedara, KB Arun Karthik, P. Patel, R. Ashwin, M. Muralitharan, M. Ntini, L. Balaji, M. Gony, S. Tyagi. Coach: S. Fleming.
First Test to go ahead as per schedule
New Delhi: BCCI vice president Lalit Modi on Tuesday said the first Test between England and India would be held as per the schedule and MS Dhoni will lead the team as it was not a “rational” proposition to postpone the match in view of the Champions League final.
The BCCI had proposed to postpone the Test by a day to December 12 so that Dhoni could play the Twenty20 Champions League day-night final on December 10 while also making it to the first match against England, but Modi ruled out any such thing happening. Modi said it was not certain if CSK would reach the final and even if it does, Dhoni will represent India in the Dec 11-15 instead of playing in the Dec 10 daynight Champions League final. “No such thing will happen. We looked at rationalising the schedule but it's not possible,” he said.

T20 Champions League in doubt
November 27, 2008 11:39 IST
The terror attacks in Mumbai on Wednesday night have put a question mark over the Twenty20 [Images] Champions League with Middlesex delaying their flight to the country and Cricket Australia [Images] suspending all travel to India even as tournament organisers shifted three matches from Mumbai to Bangalore.
Middlesex, who were due to arrive in Mumbai on Thursday morning and stay at the Taj Mahal [Images] Hotel -- which came under attack along with the Trident Hotel (formerly Oberoi) -- have delayed their flight to India until Friday.
"When we get the relevant reports through we will make a decision [on whether to go] then. As we speak now if we are told everything is fine I am prepared to say we will go but if they [the attacks] are cricket related that puts different slant on it," said Middlesex skipper Shaun Udal told the Daily Telegraph.
"It is very early to make any knee-jerk decision. The phone has been ringing non-stop with the players wanting to know what is going to happen. We don't know if it is cricket-related or not but it is an enormous coincidence," Udal added.
Cricket Australia, meanwhile, warned its cricketers against touring India for next week's Champions League.
Western Australia and Victoria were scheduled to play in the tournament along with Mike Hussey [Images], Matthew Hayden [Images], Shane Watson and Shane Warne [Images] who will be turning out for Indian Premier League [Images] teams.
"The state of play at the moment is that we are not expecting to have any really good understanding of what the situation is for the first 12 hours," CA spokesman Peter Young was quoted as saying by the Australian Associated Press.
"We are basically on temporary hold while we assess the situation, while we get expert advice and while we consult all of the parties who are involved. I wouldn't expect we would be doing anything for at least the next 12 hours," he said.
IPL champions Rajasthan Royals [Images] were also due to arrive at the Taj hotel on Thursday morning but have now put their plans on hold while skipper Warne decided to remain in Singapore until a decision is taken on the tournament.
Warne, who was travelling with Darren Berry, Royals director of coaching, said, "I'm shocked. Chuck [Berry] and I got off the plane and saw the news on TV. It's unbelievable. The place is chaos.
"We are heading to Mumbai and that's the hotel we are staying at. I don't think we will be going [to India] now. Why would you?"
He also confirmed that he has decided that it is not worth taking the risk of flying out to India, and would now be heading back to Australia.
"At this stage I am going to stay where I am for the rest of the day, but I reckon we are certainties to be on a flight heading home later today. It is just not worth the risk. No amount of money is worth the risk with what is going on over there at the moment," Warne was quoted as saying by The Herald Sun.

Champions league called off
The inaugural Twenty20 Champions League has been postponed in the wake of the terrorist attacks in Mumbai.
The tournament, due to start next Wednesday, was to bring together the top club sides from Australia, England, South Africa and Pakistan, as well as host nation India.
However, with Indian officials unable to guarantee the safety of the players following the shootings that have killed more than a hundred people, the decision was taken to call off the event until a later date.
Officials from Australia and South Africa had been in discussions with Indian board officials, stating that the players' safety was paramount.

Terrorist attacks in Mumbai
Champions League postponed
Cricinfo staff
November 27, 2008
The inaugural Champions League Twenty20, scheduled to begin in Mumbai on December 3, has been postponed following Wednesday's terrorist strikes in the city. The tournament is likely to be held in India early next year, Lalit Modi told Cricinfo.
Modi said the tournament was postponed due to the logistical problems associated with finding a third venue after Mumbai was ruled out as a host. The tournament's governing council will meet in the middle of December to finalise fresh dates for the tournament, which will be held in India, he said.
"We are confident we can hold the tournament early next year," Modi said. "India will remain the venue, as there was never a problem with hosting it here. All the teams agreed that they wanted to come for the tournament. But we had a problem with finding a third venue after Mumbai. There was no way we could have shifted the venue to Bangalore or Chennai, considering the state of the wickets and the grounds would not have accommodated all the matches."
A series of terrorist strikes in Mumbai on Wednesday night left at least 100 dead and 250 injured; the situation had not settled on Thursday, with Army troops joining the security operations.
Cricket Australia had advised its two teams, Victoria and Western Australia, and other players taking part in the tournament against travel to India in the immediate future.
"We held consultations among all the stakeholders including the founding members, the participating teams and members of the Governing Council after the unfortunate terrorist attacks in Mumbai on Wednesday night," Modi said in a statement. "It was agreed that in the best interests of all concerned, the inaugural edition of the Champions League should be postponed."
But it won't be easy for the organisers to find a window for the Champions League early next year. Australia are engaged in home and away series against South Africa, India are due to tour Pakistan and West Indies host England in a four-Test series in February. The one clear break in the international calendar is taken up by the second season of the IPL, due to start in April.

Champions League pushed back to October 2009
December 12, 2008
The inaugural Champions Twenty20 League has been pushed back by a year and will now be held in India in October 2009, the window originally identified for the tournament's second edition.
The tournament was scheduled to be held from December 3-11 in Mumbai, Chennai and Bangalore but was put off after the terrorist attacks in Mumbai.
The organisers - the BCCI, Cricket Australia (CA) and Cricket South Africa (CSA), meeting in a teleconference on Friday - said they took the decision to cancel the event "after considering all aspects, including the international calendar and the domestic schedules of the participating teams".
It is understood that there is a provision to push back the tournament's ten-year cycle by a year in the organisers' arrangement with ESPN-Star Sports (ESS), the broadcasters, though it would mean teams would have to qualify afresh for the tournament.
The initial plan was to hold the tournament in early 2009 but the home and away series between Australia and South Africa, and the domestic Twenty20 fixtures of those countries, made it an impossible task. The participation of India's players was also dependent on the status of next year's tour of Pakistan. Eventually, the organisers decided to use the proposed second season dates for the inaugural edition.
While it is likely the tournament will now have more teams - possibly up to 12 from the eight slotted for this year - next year's Twenty20 domestic finalists from India, Australia and South Africa will definitely take part. "Other participating teams will be finalised by the end of January 2009," a press release stated.
The cancellation comes as a huge blow for the teams that qualified for the 2008 edition, as they would have received at least US$250,000 as participating fees from the total pot of US$6 million. These teams will now have to try and make the cut all over again, officials confirmed.
Apart from Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings, the IPL finalists, the original line-up included Western Australia and Victoria, Australia's domestic Twenty20 winners and runners-up; South Africa's Pro20 finalists Titans and Dolphin; England's Twenty20 Cup champions Middlesex; and Sialkot Stallions, the winners of Pakistan's domestic Twenty20 tournament.

The fact that Virender Sehwag gave away his captaincy because he thought he hadn’t contributed enough when the team lost out twice in making it to the final and that shows the commitment. Sehwag, along with new captain Gautam Gambhir remain the face of the team. With AB de Villiers missing, there’ll be added responsibility on Tillakaratne Dilshan’s shoulders.
KEY PLAYERS Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir and Tillakaratne Dilshan: An adorable top-order.
VICTORIA BUSHRANGERS
There are names that won’t immediately spring to mind if you don’t follow the Australian domestic circuit keenly. But in Andrew McDonald, John Hastings, Aaron Flinch and Shane Harwood, there are allrounders who can singlehandedly change the course of a twenty over game. And of course, thanks to IPL, there are players like Rob Quiney, Brad Hodge, Matthew Wade and Peter Siddle who should be more popular with the Indian viewers.
KEY PLAYERS Rob Quiney, Brad Hodge and Shane Harwood: A good all-round line-up.
NEW SOUTH WALES
On paper, they’re easily among the strongest teams in the tournament. Brett Lee heads the attack and Simon Katich heads the batting line-up. There’s David Warner, Moises Henriques and Stuart Clarke to name a few — all proven names who can instill fear in the opposition. Not for nothing have NSW been champions Down Under.
KEY PLAYERS David Warner, Simon Katich and Brett Lee: The first two for their batting and Lee for the pace.
SUSSEX
Luke Wright, Ed Joyce, Dwayne Smith, Rory-Hamilton Brown, Piyush Chawla, Yasir Arafat and James Kirtley. Except for Chawla because he’s Indian and Wright because of his recent exploits in the Champions Trophy, the rest might still be new to hear about. But they all have the ability to match up to the rest in this tournament slated for top Twenty20 billing.
KEY PLAYERS Luke Wright and Piyush Chawla: Wright is in good form while Chawla is the local guide.
DECCAN CHARGERS
Deccan Chargers enter the competition as one of the fancied teams, being the IPL defending champions. Lost, however, will be the novelty factor as every move they made in the lead-up to their IPL-II triumph will have been dissected by the opposition. A team loaded with stars like Gilchrist, Symonds and Sharma are capable of changing the course of any game.
KEY PLAYERS Andrew Symonds and Rohit Sharma: Both are out of their respective national teams and hungry for runs.
OTAGO VOLTS
That Otago Volts will bank heavily on Brendon McCullum and Dimitri Mascarenhas is an understatement. Though there are players who answer to the names of Ian Butler, Nathan McCullum, Neil Broom, Hamish Rutherford and Aaron Redmond, the New Zealand side’s greatest strength could be the fact that they are unknown commodity. McCullum’s 156 in IPL-I is still a performance to be bettered.
KEY PLAYERS Brendon McCullum and Aaron Redmond: Both add a lot of meat up the order
SOMERSET SABRES
The English side finished second in the Pro40 Division I in England. Their skipper Justin Langer is confident that they have the wherewithal to succeed here. Their hopes revolve around Marcus Trescothick, who has been prolific on the county circuit with 1817 runs in the season that just ended.
KEY PLAYERS Justin Langer and Marcus Trescothick: Experience of the highest order
RCB
The expectations have hit the roof after the dramatic turnaround in IPL II, where they finished second best after an utterly forgettable inaugural edition. Consistency and teamwork were the key factors that powered the side and skipper Anil Kumble would be keen to exploit them further in this tournament
KEY PLAYERS Anil Kumble and Rahul Dravid: Both are experienced and are playing at home.
CAPE COBRAS
They may be without their talismanic skipper Graeme Smith but Cape Cobras — South African T20 champions — will remain strong contenders for the title with the likes of Herschelle Gibbs and Jean-Paul Duminy in their ranks. Adding muscle to team are a host of seasoned pros including skipper Andrew Puttick and hard-hitting opener Derek Brand.
KEY PLAYERS Herschelle Gibbs and Jean-Paul Duminy: Capable of fireworks with the bat.
TRINIDAD & TOBAGO
Regardless of the state of West Indian cricket, a cricket team from Brian Charles Lara’s island will always be expected to throw up special talent. Sample this statement of manager Colin Borde who says, “This is a very disciplined team, they have put in the work. Their dreams are big dreams. A T20 tournament offers them their best chance.”
KEY PLAYERS Dwayne Bravo and Ravi Rampaul: First an all-rounder and the second a decent pacer
WAYAMBA
A team that has Mahela Jayawardene and Ajantha Mendis in it, has the power to beat any side on a given day. So any team underestimating Wayamba, the Sri Lankan domestic T20 champs, will do so at its own peril. Wayamba should enjoy the subcontinental conditions. The glitch is, this team is placed in Group D along with Delhi Daredevils and the Victorian Bushrangers.
KEY PLAYERS Mahela Jayawardene and Ajantha Mendis: Accomplished with the bat and the ball
DIAMOND EAGLES
If they’ve been among the top teams in the South African domestic circuit, they’ve got to be good. With the exception of Morne van Wyk and Boeta Dippeanaar, the rest are lesser known players at least in this side of the world. But for a team that has eight players who can bat as well as bowl, there’s a lot to look forward to.
Key Players Boeta Dippeanaar and Morne van Wyk: Simply for the reason that they’ve toured India in the past with the national teams

Awesome game. 27 runs in a single over and the bowler was keep on bowling full tosses when he was hitting madly.
As I said earlier I want T&T to win the trophy!
Eagles would be my next choice, except Dippenaar rest are proteas club cricketers but still they are playing wonderfully well.
If this is scripted Delhi might play till finals.
