Portugal were VERY disappointing in their 1-0 win last night over Angola. They started well and they just fizzled out. Figo was outstanding though. Pauletta, Ronaldo and at times even others were way too selfish and squandered what might have been good chances.
Argentina were much better but even they didnt have a great second half against Ivory Coast. |

England is the most over rated team and Beckham is the most hyped player. Agreed he is a youth icon but when it comes to talent Lampard and Gerrard are far better than him. These days a few others have mastered the trick of movement in the air. Carlos makes full use of the 'magnum' effect. Gaizka Mendieta is also good. I want the English team to lose. It will . I am rooting for Thiery Henry and Portugal . |

Kannan, Forget the past. Today England has the best team around . The best strikers are with them. All the players have proven track record with the Mighty Bend it like Beckham leading the show. The team's more will be up now in view of Beckham giving a sound start. Whether the defender did a self goal or not, it was an astounding free kick ( typical of Beckham ) ! |

Not a convincing 1 (for Italian lvl) And havent Italy still reworked their strategy Defending likes of Brazil,France is agreeable...Playin Ghana with an army of defenders and still a couple of lapses in the defence ..Have they forgotten t 2002 Cannavara was awesome though Totti injured jus above his vulnerable left ankle Hope nothins wrong. Both the goals were awesome |

always effective, but the new ball is menacing in the air as we saw in the opening game. It takes little effort to give more swing to the ball and Beckham's free-kicks can no longer be considered a potent weapon. |

Kannan was referring to the 'swerve' the new ball gets. The new adidas ball has fewer panels and fewer lines running across and its much smoother than the older balls. |

FORZA ITALIA!!!
To me, Italy vs Ghana has been the best match so far, providing some high quality action in both halves. Marcello Lippi stuck to his 4-3-1-2 formation and true to his claims, the team produced an attacking display [unlike the more defense oriented and 'solid' style of previous Italian teams]. However, in doing that, many a time they left holes in the defense and Ghana looked threatening at times but they sqandered many chances because of their inability to shoot from mid/long range. It was a tough match as expected in this group of death. For me, the man of the match was clearly Fabio Cannavaro, who had an outstanding match. Hope the Azzuri hold fort and beat the Czech. That match is going to be one hell of a match. |

Thanks for clarifying (assuming the source is right). I was actually wondering if he had another seizure attack, which was hushed up. With any other player, the substitution would have been made much earlier. The commentator's statement summed it all up: "Ronaldo plays like he just broke-up with his girl friend before the match". |

Scorers- Pablo,Torres,Villa(2) Were jus awesome .Good old 4-3-3 doin the magic The attack was like a cannon ;defence breached jus 2ce inspite of the hyped milan lead Shevchenko The ukranians were shattered left right and center and all they did was earning awful lot of pity Most dominating performance in the first round With the best set of midfielders and gr8 forwards( that the can afford resting even Raul ) and a good defence(all Madridians/Barcelonians/Valencians ) Surely a team to watch out tis 2006 . Likely to meet South Korea or perhaps France in round 2(they have a score to settle here I still remember the fraudulent victory in 200 ).Making to the quarters is a piece of choco-cake The victor sends out a clear signal .Yellows,Blues n whites watch out for the red-shirts |

This is SOCCER_GAL~ I hacked into my friend's account since for some reason I can't sign on my own account ever since I changed my e-mail address thing England's next match is tomorrow and it's against Trinidad n Tobago. I think England will have a hard time getting past Trinidad's defense. Did you see number 5 for Trinidad..his name was Santos or something he was crazzzzzzy. I bet the man's forehead must have been hurting after playing Sweden, he was heading all these long balls. #11 for Trinidad was a good player too, and that white guy that looked like Alan Smith. Another thing is Trinidad has Yorke whose played with England clubs before like Manchester United, this guy practically lead them to so many victories. Anyways he probably knows most of the England players weaknesses/strengths. The game is going to be tight most likely a draw or one of the teams beating the other by one goal. |

Right - Ronaldo looks woefully out of touch. That said, we're yet to see Kaka and Ronaldinho combine convincingly to set up a quality goal for one of the strikers. When I say 'quality goal' I' mean something on the lines of the one Cambiasso got for Argentina the other day - now THAT is something you typically expect from a Brazilian side. Hasn't happened so far - not sure if the magic quartet (Ronaldo-Adriano-Kaka-Ronaldinho) is actually working for Brazil. I think Perreira might favour Robinho to start the next game upfront - he looked pretty lively coming on as a sub against the Aussies. Also, I think Brazil should get someone else to take the free kicks (maybe Juninho?) - Roberto Carlos just keeps wasting chance after chance. |

Koller still out for the Czechs, Baros is expected to play some part. Not sure if he'll start though. Bruckner's probably worried sick over Rosicky's see-sawing form. Of course they still have Nedved to pull the strings in midifield. Lippi will probably make just the one change - Gattuso coming in for the suspended De Rossi. They have problems in attack, though. Toni isn't firing, Gilardino has an ankle problem and Totti looks like he's running out of ideas. IMO, A best performing team has to win regardless how many times they won b4. Honestly, I dont want history to repeat like France winning the WC in their own nation. Would have been a successive 3 years WIN by Brazil. Now they qualified and they might even enter QF Spain, Argentina the only hopeful teams for a victory over Brazil. |

Like what Robbie Fowler said in a recent interview, "If England do win the World Cup, it will be inspite of Eriksson and not because of him". But guess who the real winner is??!! "Ingerland", of course! Eriksson, McLaren and Beckham would've been jumping with joy at all those sending-offs and bookings picked up by Portugese players. Deco, Costinha - suspended Ronaldo - injured Figo - on a yellow, could turn into a ban if FIFA take a closer look at the head-butting incident (what the hell was he thinking?? ) Maniche, Petit, Ricardo, Nuno Valente - all on one booking each. Guess we can safely say after having seen England's dismal performance against Ecuador, that a full-strength Portugese side would've been way too hot for Sven's men to handle. But now that Scolari only has a bunch of second-choice players to choose from, this evens things out nicely. Should be a keenly-contested quarterfinal, and with England putting their best eleven out there, you've gotta give them the edge going into this one. I just hope David Beckham is right when he says they're not playing to their potential! |

Just came here to post my support for u and Renault. I am for the France. In India no one really knows about the potential of french players they all play with big clubs huge players and don't know why apart the 98 world cup and 2000 Euro the team was never able to recreate the magic
Zidane is in REAL madrid (plays with Ronaldo and Beckam) Henry is in ARSENAL, Viera Patrick in JUVENTUS OF TURIN, Trezeguet in JUVENTUS, SAHA in Manchester UNITED, SAGNOl Willy is in BAYERN Munich, Sylvestre in MANCHESTER UNITED and MAKELELE Claude in CHELSEA. France has one of the best defense strategy in this world cup which was once again proved against BRASIL.Their defct is each player is STAR in his own club and is not able to shine with the entire team. Hope the magic will work this time. AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST the only Indian to play in a world cup match is in the French team VIKASH DORASOO (Indian from Mauritius) SO please tell GO FRANCE GO! It was unfair sending rooney off. Referee should have gave him a yellow card. In a uk newspaper there is a pic of C.ronaldo blinking to 1 of his team mates after referee sends of rooney. Also there was a proper foul in the portugees penalty box. Referee should have given penalty but didn't i think its just england's pure bad luck. Started with micheal own. |

So one World Cup is enough to make or break a player? By your logic, Hong Myung Bo should be regarded as the best defender in the world after the 2002 World Cup. Afterall he did guide South Korea to the semis while the likes of Nesta and Canavarro flopped in the quarterfinals. Ronaldinho's below par performance is not his fault though. Ronaldhino has played near constantly for Brazil for over two years: from the copa america, the confederations cup, this world cup, a prolonged run in the Champions league and two tough league campaigns coupled with Nike's bollocks policy of having Brazil play stupid meaningless friendies across the world with consistantly full strength teams. Add to that Parreira's insistence on playing the big four names and limiting the free role he enjoys under Frank Rijkaard at Barcelona f***ed brasil up this tournament. Zidane is brilliant no doubt but Ronaldinho will eclipse him. In fact he has already done so in the Spanish League. |

Italy does a wonderful job. congrats. They have got the best defense . And it was on display for everyone to watch. And good decision by coach to bring in del piero. In the last world cup too del was sidelined for most part of the tournament. I think it was in the italy vs mexico match . mexico was one up and then del was introduced in the closing minutes. He went on to score a goal and Italy were through to the next stage. Here he did it once again. congrats . The first goal was fantastic. I am happy that the germans were humbled in their own territory. Now it remains to be seen how the Italians are going to face the monumental task of vying against Portugal ( I hope Portugal blows away france) for the cup. |

What a game!!
Amazing - by far the most entertaining contest in the tournament so far. Great attacking football by both sides - end-to-end stuff in the latter stages of the second half and all through extra time. Breathtaking - this is the stuff that big games are made of Excellent goals from Grosso and Del Piero (his finish was perfection exemplifed - the ball arcing beautifully over Lehmann to hit the back corner of the net with almost geometric precision ). Across the pitch the Azzurri kept composure and always gave the impression of being in control. Cannavaro was impregnable in defence. Pirlo ruled midfield. Italy deserved the victory and a place in the final - maintaining their pattern of a World Cup final appearance every 12 years ('70, '82, '94, '06). |

Martin Johnson, the England rugby union captain in the World Cup triumph of 2003, said that he never set himself up to be a leader. It was just that people tended to follow him, demonstrating that the true gift of leadership is the ability to inspire “followship” in everyone else. That was always something that Zidane was able to do. Zidane was what David Beckham aspired to be and fell short of. No shame for Beckham there. Both reached for the stars; Zidane got there, Beckham didn’t. Alas, poor David, Zidane really was the best footballer in the world. Zidane really did function as the inspiration of a great team. Zidane really did win the World Cup. Draw a line between Beckham and Zidane, then. On the one side, very, very good; on the other, indisputably great.
See, it’s easy to tell the difference when you know how, isn’t it? |

Zinedine Zidane's agent says the France captain headbutted Marco Materazzi in Sunday's World Cup final because the Italian made a "very serious" comment.
Zidane appeared to react to something that was said and was dismissed for his violent charge into his opponent. "He told me Materazzi said something very serious to him but he wouldn't tell me what," agent Alain Migliaccio told BBC Five Live Sport. Sources in France say it is believed Materazzi insulted Zidane's mother. Migliaccio, who spoke to Zidane early on Monday morning, added that Zidane did not elaborate on what Materazzi said. "I don't know. Zinedine didn't want to talk about it but it will all come out in the next week," he said. "He is a man who normally lets things wash over him but on Sunday night something exploded inside him. Materazzi refused to answer questions afterwards and Gallas saw that as an admission of guilt by the Italian. "I don't know what he said. You'll have to ask him but he's gone. I know why he's gone because maybe he's done something wrong." ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If Zidane didn't do anything to him, who'll punish him for whatever crap he said ? Well done Zidane |
