Wonder why there is so much antipathy towards English cricket here !
Come on guys. They were the first ones to give bullet for bullet to the magnificent Aussies recently.
Take it from me. This England team is capable of winning the worldcup if Flintoff & Waughan are fully fit
The Ashes series is a bit far away by cricketing standars but I think though England may not achieve the same levels of performance, still they will put up a tough fight .
The only bowling threat is Bret Lee & they counter him well, they are through.
Also if Shane Warne is negotiated, its Britain all the way

Trescothick out. Vaughan, not until the third test. No Jones. Harmison injury.
Fletcher persists with Geraint Jones
Hinting that may play Giles instead of Panesar
Hoping against hope that Flintoff and Petersen pull something off

Panesar can't do anything other than deliver the occasional spin. His fielding and batting are a joke, best left uncommented. This summer the crowd was jeering him whenever he escorted the ball to the boundary or let it slip through his legs. Reminds me of Manindar Singh.

When did England have good spinners. Emburey, Edmonds etc are all nostalgia. In his last tour Gooch relied more on Hick than Emburey !
Panesar has been attacking throughout. He even troubled Sachin and Dravid this time they came to India . In their last tour to India, all that Giles ever did was bowl to Sachin's back for hours.
I don't get this obsession about batting abilities. Now Fletcher is saying that without Trescothik he may think of Giles as he is better bat. If 7 batsmen can't do that job the problem lies elsewhere.
Same reason why he is picking Geraint Jones over Chris Read. Why does every keeper have to be a Gilchrist. It has been proved time and again that Jones is modeled on the Parthiv, MSK Prasad variety.
I feel Fletcher has got it all wrong.

Agree on the spinners. But I think England too have this problem of crumbling like a pack of cards. They can't be too careful about the batting skills down to the bowlers. But I remember Read doing well in the summer against Pakistan. In fact, Read made a comback to the team and was forced to do well to keep his place. Why pick Jones over him is a mystery.

The Ashes is a Test cricket series, played between England and Australia - it is international cricket's oldest and most celebrated rivalry dating back to 1882. It is currently played approximately biennially, alternately in England and Australia. The Ashes are "held" by the country which last won a series and to "regain" them the other country must win more Test matches in a series than the country that "holds" them. If a series is "drawn" then the country holding the Ashes retains them. The last Ashes series was played in England in 2005 when England regained The Ashes after a gap of 16 years by winning the series 2-1. The next Ashes series will be in Australia in 2006-07 and the next series in England will be in 2009.
The series is named after a satirical obituary published in The Sporting Times in 1882 following the match at The Oval, in which Australia beat England in England for the first time. The obituary stated that English cricket had died, and the body will be cremated and the ashes taken to Australia. The English media dubbed the next English tour, to Australia (1882-83) as the quest to regain The Ashes.
A small terracotta urn was presented to the England captain Ivo Bligh by a group of Melbourne women at some point during the 1882-83 tour. The contents of the urn are reputed to be the ashes of an item of cricket equipment, possibly a bail, ball or stump. The urn is not used as a trophy for the Ashes series, and whichever side "holds" the Ashes, the urn normally remains in the MCC Museum at Lord's because of its age and fragility. Since the 1998-99 Ashes series, a Waterford crystal trophy has been presented to the winners.

non-exhibition of ego doesnt mean the absence of it. non-exhibition is good coz, it saves your face when you cant maintain your performance level. it saves your respect. people speak for you even if you consistently dont perform well.
that must ruffle a few feathers
Ego is a good thing. when used positively, can be great driving force. it comes with pride which comes with performance and results. the aussies have earned it.
digressing from the digression, trescothick and harminson could have made a big difference. i would surely miss marcus. but, its good to miss harminson sometimes. in the championship trophy match against india, they would have felt better without harminson. he was totally erratic. i miss the sportive never-say-die attitude of gough.
i hope not for lop-sided matches though i hope for a lop-sided series. but i wonder, how stymied would the aussies be if england could beat them with such a depleted team.
one interesting quote: "I definitely believe if any of our batsmen get out to Ashley Giles in the Tests they should go out and hang themselves. But I am confident that won't happen."
Terry Alderman previewing the 2005 Ashes. Giles dismissed all the top eight at least once during the series

[quote+"Shane Warne"]They think they are just trying to strengthen their batting and their tail, but actually what they are doing is losing two of the finest arts in the game, in keeping and spin bowling. England have got two guys that can do that exceptionally well, but they want them to go to bring in handy lower-order batters. That's what the top six are there for. You need 20 wickets to win a Test.[/quote]
The rest of the article is here
Of course it is good ol Aussie pressure tactics but I think Warne's points are quite valid.

Well the recent ashes saw Flintoff appearing as a member but now as a captain . This might add some pressure but he is a top class cricketer who takes up challenge in his stride.
Waughan was a solid opener who will be missed.
If Strauss gives solid start ( foundation by staying long ) and if Peterson takes charge as leading batsman and if Flintoff gives the similar solid punch later in the order , we can witness an interesting duel
but still IMO, Aussies will look for revenge and they seem to be better placed in terms of bowling resources

Whatever may be their on field behaviour, the Aussies spontaneously applaud any great feat .
Havent you seen Bret Lee applauding VVS
Or for that matter Bret Lee patting Sachin after he scored 247 ++ in Sydney
I read one article from VVS wherein he mentions , after every stroke of his, at the end of the over , while crossing , Mathew Hayden used to appreciate that particular stroke of his !
Steve Waugh's contribution to Kolkatta and charity are well known

Good comeback by England
Day 1 :

Collingwood 98 NO
Pietersen 60 NO
Bell 60
Good thing is that the top order has performed well. Even Cook got 27 . Means he is set but could not progress further.
If Stauss also gives a good start, we can expect an evenly matched series
Pietersen hit a huge six off Shane Warne to the first over he faced

For the first time after our Adelaide win, I am seeing Aussies on the defensive !

Flintoff, having scored 38 no and having taken a wicket, his confidence level will be sky high.
And thats what is needed for a captain and for his team.

I am happy that Aussies cant win this match atleast
This gives a position of strength for Eng.
And match 3 will be evenly contested.
I dont want the series to be one sided. Now it looks balanced.

they must have focussed on Flintoff , Kevin , Strauss and the bowlers but must have missed out on Collingwood.

This pitch is a batting paradise but that doesn't gurantee loads of runs on the board; they have to score it.
I'm sure the next three pitches will have assistance to Warney..
Ya gotta agree England's approach was impeccable.. is a testament that cricket is a mental battle.. KP and Colly aren't England's best batsmen as the far the technique is cocerned; they're the toughest players.
Game on. But I'm not convinced that England has the fire power to rattle Australia since nobody is threatening(Flintoff is an exception)..
McGrath wasn't 100% fit. His place was in doubt but after bowling three overs in the first day morning, he got green signal. Lee works hard but is not threatening. Warney has an off series so far. I'm sure we won't see Lee in the next match; it'll be a rookie.

Warney found form and gave a 'sent off' to KP
What are Hayden and Martyn doing
They're the only two who haven't contributed anything so far. Hayden isn't out of form but isn't playing the right shots
Ponting and Hussey have to do it every innings

Raghu sir
Why u are needlessly bringing some racist sentiments here !
Regardless of whether Pietersen is from whichever country or race, APPRECIATE HIS BATTING SKILLS AND THE GUTS TO FACE THE BEST OF THE BOWLING ATTACK
Hey, this guy has proved against top class bowling and very aggressive at heart.
lets welcome another emerging hero !

KP is a good batsman. There's a hype around him because of his flamboyant display of batting and big mouth. He's played against all the top teams and done well. How he will fare against them in away grounds is yet to be seen. So far the only bowler who troubled him is Asif.
good things about him is his dominance over bowlers and the way he handles spinners.
bad things about him--arrogance, playing rash shots in crunch time and getting out to loose deliveries, and of course his anti-SA comments.. His father is a SAfrican, he was born in SA... then why the heq he laments SA..

Exactly ! I second it and Raghu machi - Why this kind of comments from your side? I have heard about Kevin Peterson. But Upul Tharanga

Martyn's retired in the middle of the series
No one can match elegance.. not even M Waugh.
Have to respect him for steping aside when he knows it's time.. Australians set example in all aspects of cricket.
