Tendulkar backs India to win T20 World Cup
By thedarknight ⋅ May 29, 2009 ⋅ Post a comment Former captain Sachin Tendulkar has thrown his support behind India, saying that they are ‘well balanced’ and will go on to retain their ICC World Twenty20 crown in England next month. Tendulkar, who does not play Twenty20 International cricket although he captains Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Mumbai Indians, said that he believes India will be celebrating again in under a month’s time. “India is the most balanced side in the world and there is no doubt we can defend the title,” he said. Tendulkar, who has played 159 Tests and 425 One Day Internationals for his country, backs India’s pace attack, led by Zaheer Khan, RP Singh and Ishant Sharma, to succeed, especially in English conditions. “Zaheer, Ishant, Rudra Pratap Singh form a lethal combination, particularly in English conditions. Our seam attack has a lot of variety and that would come handy in such conditions. On our day, we can demolish any batting side. We come as a package… (and) I am certain this package is the best in business at the moment. This package has everything which is necessary to make us world champions once again.” Wicket-keeper Mahendra Singh Dhoni will lead the side, as he did in South Africa in 2007 when they beat arch-rivals Pakistan by five runs to clinch the title. India take on Bangladesh and Ireland in Group A of the 2009 tournament, which begins on 5th June. |

One of the delights of the T20 World Cup has been the commentary. Even allowing for he occasional cliche-riddled specimen the broadcasters’ quota-driven recruitment throws up, the standard has been streets ahead of those set by IPL’s band |
Quote: |
The WC has fielded a great lineup, with the odd exception and even so – color me biased, if you will — the best periods are when Harsha Bhogle teams up with Anil Kumble. They are not much given to superlatives — to get a ‘fantastic‘ out of them, the on-field action actually has to merit it. |

PostScript: Credit Sunil Gavaskar with this story. He was once sharing the box with Richie Benaud. Someone — Kim Hughes, I think — had just hit a century, and Sunny went into ecstasies. Or started to, but then he noticed Benaud holding his hand up, so he shut up, thinking the senior commentator wanted to say something.
Benaud let the silence build, and then at one point, gestured that SMG should start talking. At the end of the session, Gavaskar went to the producers, asked them to replay that bit for him, and realized what Benaud had just taught him. The batsman taking off his helmet and kissing the crest, his partner and even his opponents coming up to congratulate him, the crowd rising to its feet to vocally acclaim a brilliant innings — the visuals spoke volumes, the commentator didn’t need to. |

What is the Sehwag ‘issue’?
A couple of years ago, a leading media group asked Shoaib Akthar to fly down to India to take part in a promotional road show. The Pakistan quick turned down the invite [no, not warts -- the problem that time was time, which he said he didn't have]. The sports editor of the media group called one of his reporters and ordered him to “take Akthar’s ass”. The reporter called up a few perennial malcontents in Pakistan, got some “quotes”, and stitched together a story of how Akthar’s action was “still suspect” and was causing some consternation in Pakistan’s cricketing circles. |

I’m still trying to get this. Here’s the sequence, shorn of frills: A player gets injured in the IPL. Preliminary reads suggest that the injured area could possibly recover with regular treatment, so he is picked for the next tournament. Days pass, the injury doesn’t heal as well as it was initially expected to. The player tries out in the nets, but pain recurs and he gives up inside of five minutes. The physio and attending doctor(s) decide the injury requires surgical correction; the BCCI decides to fly the player back home and fly out a replacement.
That is what happened – and that is all that happened, so wherefore the fuss? As to the ‘disconcerting point’ about a leak within the Indian team — oh yes, the ubiquitous ’source’ who shall be unnamed, and who is in the nature of the tribe prone to hallucinating? Because, seriously, what is there about an injury that can cause a ‘rift’ in the team? Why do I get the feeling that a journo with an overactive imagination floated a story concocted out of thin air, got called on it, and sections of the media have since joined ranks and will continue to fan a rumor that has since been denied, by citing it at every conceivable opportunity? |

yes, the rules for 6 are not clear.
I have a doubt. The rules say if any part of the fielders body touches the boundary rope while holding the ball, then its a boundary. But, in Australian grounds, i have seen fielders leaning on the boundary fence and taking catches. Hemand Badani took one such catch in a Ind vs Pak match in Australia. How does Autralian grounds(for that matter any ground with a boundary fence instead of rope) alone are exceptions for this rule. |

Mr.Sridhar : Look, its going to be tough contest again! India might have slight advantage than WI as they are the current champs and you know they have a very good depth, as far as batting is concerned. They have to worry about Dhoni's lack of form and worst bowling in the final overs. WI, hmmm they have their fearless Gayle who can do anything! I am not surprised even if India loses this game! |

As we get into the Super Eights stage of the World Twenty20, teams that have had less than ideal beginnings to their campaigns are refusing to panic, deciding instead to focus on the positive aspects of their poor performances.
Hosts England and defending champions India have had poor starts, losing their games to South Africa and West Indies respectively. "Since Australia has cunningly exited the tournament early to prepare for the Ashes, we decided that the smart thing to do is negate their advantage by following suit," said England captain Paul Collingwood, looking impossibly pleased with himself. "We look forward to getting our backsides kicked by India and the West Indies as well, so we can start working in earnest towards our embarrassing Ashes loss," he added with admirable honesty. Not surprisingly, this strategy has been evolved by former Australia and current Kolkata Knight Riders coach John Buchanan, who has joined the England coaching set-up to help carefully plan and execute a string of devastating defeats to Australia. "Currently we are keenly studying those silly intro videos the TV channel plays when a new batsman walks in at the fall of a wicket, in order to learn all their favourite shots. Hahaha! Now we know the deepest secrets of opposing teams, such as the fact that Kumar Sangakkara favours the cover-drive. Armed with this knowledge, we can't possibly fail," said Buchanan, offering a glimpse into his immense tactical acumen and his faithful adherence to the "know your enemy" methodology suggested by Sun Tzu in his bestselling book. India captain MS Dhoni, reacting to the loss, displayed his well-known calm demeanour, saying "This happens in cricket. You win some, you lose some. If we exit the tournament early, we'll use the opportunity to prepare for the Ashes." When a reporter pointed out that India wasn't even playing in the Ashes, Dhoni retorted, "So what? In India, thousands of students prepare for the IIT entrance exam, even though they have no hope of joining IIT. We are merely upholding this tradition." Last year's finalist Pakistan, too, started off on the wrong foot, being soundly walloped by Sri Lanka. "It takes time to get used to new formats. We need to first gain experience and understand the nuances of Twenty20 before we can start underachieving in it, just like in LOIs and Tests," explained Younis Khan, perfectly logically. Asked about Shahid Afridi's disappointing form with the bat, he came to the player's defence, saying, "Shahid is hitting the ball very well. It's just that he's hitting it in the wrong direction - straight up vertically instead of achieving a more horizontal trajectory, towards the boundary. If boundaries were measured using height instead of distance, Afridi would be the game's greatest batsman ever." He paused and reflected a bit before adding, "With the possible exception of J Srinath." IPL commissioner Lalit Modi, who was present at the India-West Indies game, appeared to be thoroughly enjoying the tournament, having finally warmed up to non-IPL Twenty20 matches. "It's hearwarming to see players from different IPL franchises put aside their differences, and come together to play for their... what is it? I forget the term. Oh, yeah, countries. That's it, countries," he said. "Wonderful to see players from Knight Riders, Super Kings, Deccan Chargers, all wearing the same uniform, sharing team secrets and displaying camaraderie. Who knows, this 'international' cricket might just catch on," he signed off, eyes misting over. In other news, Preity Zinta was reportedly seen looking for Kings XI player James Hopes in the men's rooms at Lord's, since she had read in a newspaper headline that "Australian hopes had disappeared down the toilet." http://www.cricinfo.com/wt20page2/content/story/408778.html |

IMO, Sehwag and Yuvraj are almost equal in ODIs. Stats would also point the same I think. And I don't get this matchwinner tag actually. Not just for Yuvraj, for any other player I mean. Being a number 5/6 batsman, whenever Yuvraj hits a 50/100 it looks like he made India to win. It's not that Yuvraj singlehandedly played to win the match. He is a good finisher which India was lacking for some time. Yuvraj is the best limited overs player I would say. But Sehwag wins overall. |

When Yuvraj is at his best, he has few peers in style across World Cricket But he is best only against baccha bowlers or patta conditions So, when there is a real challenge, he fails. And he fails in ungainly, ugly fashion - the style quotient in these situations is below Sehwag's for him. Ever see Sehwag defending? As against Yuvi thadaving while trying to defend? So, it is fallacious to say that Yuvraj towers above Sehwag in style quotient. Basically, what we are saying is that when the going gets tough, Yuvraj looks uglier than Sehwag. When the going is good, he looks like a swan to Sehwag's ugly duckling |

He is exhilirating to watch against mediocre bowlers and/or in flat pitches. I agree on the sheer brilliance under these conditions - and I would definitely want him in the short formats for that. But he stands no comparison to Sehwag on technique or effect or impact on opposition bowlers(I am talking about the Steyns and Johnsons not the Broads and Mascraenhases). Grace, yes, under certain conditions Yuvraj trumps it. So, Technique - Sehwag slightly better than Yuvraj in flat conditions and way better in conditions favouring bowlers Grace - Sehwag much inferior in attacking strokes but way superior in defensive technique and against quality spin bowlers Footwork - thalaivar doesnt need it at all and you can see his footwork against spinners; Yuvraj - no footwork to speak of against spinners, and quality seamnrs. Most of the time once he get settles you can be assured he will stay on and take India to winning position.. But thats not the same case for Viru.. can get out at any point of time.. but as long as he is in crease he is very very effective...Yuvi is more consist than Viru. Actually i find Viru's game more intresting and thrilling than Yuvi jst demolishes the opponent. |

Memorable moments The second edition of World T20 had all the nail-biting ingredients — action, suspense, climax and the priceless anti-climax. ABY JOSE takes a look at some dramatic moments. ENGLAND LOSING TO MINNOWS NETHERLANDS The tournament started with a stunning script where hosts England looked a pack of jokers. The Netherlands — a team of amateurs and low-profile professionals — scripted another part to the ‘mother of all upsets’ saga, a moment the Oranje Army would proudly cherish for years to come. Chasing 163 for victory, the minnows sent the British press on a lambasting spree with their lastball victory, a senseless overthrow by Stuard Broad gifting them the winning run. CHRIS GAYLE’S INNINGS AND THE AUSSIE DEFEAT Dismiss Gayle early on and the rest will follow. That might have been the plan Ricky Ponting had in mind when Australia began to defend a challenging 169 against the lesser-fancied West Indies in their group-of-death tie. But all those hopes went up in smoke as the Aussie bowlers were caught unawares by the rampaging southpaw. Gayle, the only centurion in T20 Internationals, almost scored another one, scoring 88 in just 50 balls as Windies romped home with more than four overs to spare. The opener took the mickey out of Brett Lee, clubbing the veteran for 27 runs in an over. It seemed that Australia were in England for the Ashes rather than the T20 extravaganza as they crashed out with a sixwicket defeat against Lanka in a must-win encounter. INDIA CRASHING OUT IN THE SUPER EIGHT STAGE The defending champions tag, the ‘rich’ IPL experience and the presence of larger-than-life superboys: Dhoni’s men were hyped to embrace glory on English soil. Somebody might have smelt a rat as an injured Sehwag was sent back home and Dhoni lost his cool with the media. After a smooth sail into the Super Eight stage, the writing was on the wall when Dwayne Bravo proved that West Indies are more than just Chris Gayle. Then, England ‘bounced’ out the champions with a scintillating show at Lord’s. Hell broke loose as the postmortem began. The surprise batting promotion of Ravindra Jadeja to the fatigue factor were discussed to death. More ignominy was in store as South Africa killed Indian hopes of a consolation win as the stars left the field with tired limbs and bruised egos. ANGELO MATHEWS’ FIELDING It appeared to be a certain six till Angelo Mathews intervened like an angel with a magical touch. There were the breathttaking elements of acrobatic beauty, impeccable presence of mind and above all, unmistakable commitment as Mathews saved a six with a controversial effort. He was stationed at wide long-on boundary when West Indian batsman Ramnaresh Sarwan swatted a Ajantha Mendis delivery towards him. Mathews caught the ball inside the ropes. Realising that his momentum would take him over the boundary, he flung the ball in the air. By this time his foot went over the boundary and seeing the ball was about to land over the rope, he flew to swat the ball inside the ropes. It required several minutes and various replays for the on-field umpires Billy Bowden and Simon Taufel to allow just three runs for the shot. The spectacular effort nevertheless evoked a hot debate. The stamp of approval came from MCC, the guardian of cricket laws, few days later, asserting that there was nothing illegal in now famous Mathews move. UMAR GUL’S SPELL AGAINST NEW ZEALAND Daniel Vettori’s luck on that fateful day was confined to the call of the coin. After electing to bat, New Zealand were already struggling to up the ante (72/4) against Pakistan when Umar Gul was introduced as late as the 13th over of the innings. The wiry pacer accounted for Scott Styris with his third ball as Shahid Afridi pulled off a splendid catch running backwards at long on. Gul bagged other one off his next ball when Peter McGlashan was trapped plumb in front with a swinging yorker. Gull was all over the Kiwis when he rattled Nathan McCullum’s leg stump in his second over. Another fatal yorker brought the fourth wicket and Gul walked into history books with his fifth wicket, the first bowler to do so in T20 internationals. Gul returned majestic figures of 3-0-6-5 to skittle out Kiwis for 99 and deservingly walked away with the Man of the Match award after an emphatic Pak victory. |

Yuvraj made his Test debut against New Zealand in Mohali in late 2003 in front of his home crowd in Punjab due to the absence of regular captain Sourav Ganguly in the No. 6 position.[9] He was omitted upon Ganguly's return but got another opportunity in the Test team in the 2004 Tour to Pakistan, when Ganguly was again injured. He scored his first Test century in a losing effort against Pakistan in the second Test at Lahore. When Ganguly returned for the third Test, Akash Chopra was dropped and it appeared that the Indian selectors wanted to give him a regular place in the team. He was subsequently played as Virender Sehwag's opening partner, but after two poor matches in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia,[16] he was dropped in favour of Gautam Gambhir. He was recalled to the Test team, batting in the No. 6 position for the away series against Zimbabwe in August 2005 after Sachin Tendulkar was sidelined with tennis elbow. He then retained his position in the Test team after Ganguly was axed following a row with coach Greg Chappell. He scored a second Test century in the third and final Test in Pakistan in the series in January 2006, which India again lost. However, Yuvraj has struggled subsequently in 2006, failing to pass 50 in six Tests against England (two, both at home) and the West Indies (four, all away from home). His injury in late 2006 allowed the return of former captain Ganguly to the team, who subsequently top-scored in the series.
Yuvraj was included in India's Test squad to face Pakistan in November 2007, but was not included in the playing 11 for the first test. Yuvraj was picked in the 3rd Test due to an injured Sachin Tendulkar. India were 61/4 before he and Sourav Ganguly made a 300 run partnership with Yuvraj recording his highest Test score of 169. He had a very poor Test series against Australia in Indian tour to that country in 2007–08. After his poor showing in the first two Tests he was dropped for the remainder of the series. Yuvraj scored 85* put on an unbroken partnership of 163 with Sachin Tendulkar to defeat England in the First Test at Chennai on 15 December 2008. It was the fourth highest successful run chase in history and the highest in India. |
