PR, NZ Team are also the partners in crime. They have requested the extra tonty 20. So looks like this is sort of a mutual agreement. But why scrap a practice match? |

NO PUSHOVERS WHERE THE KIWIS STAND
Give New Zealand an inch, they will take a mile Plucky Kiwis Bound To Make Things Difficult For Indians, Especially In T20s And ODIs Dwaipayan Datta | TNN Chennai: It was September in Chennai and New Zealand ‘A’ were playing a star-studded India ‘A’ on a rankturner at the Chepauk Stadium. With 1-0 up in the series and the likes of Sourav Ganguly, Suresh Raina, RP Singh, Amit Mishra, Dhawal Kulkarni in the team, the feeling was that the game would get over in three days. It did in little more than that, but in Kiwis’ favour. Peter Fulton’s team hammered a complacent India ‘A’ on a spinning track to go back home with their heads held high. Well, that’s for you, the present New Zealand cricket team. True, they don’t have the stars like Shane Bond, Stephen Fleming or Craig McMillan, but if you give them an inch, they will take a mile. ICL has taken a huge toll of New Zealand cricket, with such stars like Bond, McMillan, Lou Vincent, Hamish Marshall, Chris Harris, Daryl Tuffey, Andre Adams, Nathan Astle, along with some more domestic cricketers, quitting their ranks and joining the rebel league. Glenn Turner, the legendary New Zealand opener, who came as the manager with the New Zealand ‘A’ team, had put things into perespective during a chat with the TOI. “What has been affected most by the ICL is our domestic structure. If the domestic cricket gets weakened, it’s difficult to be competitive at the highest level,” Turner had said. He was right. But he had also talked about a never-say-die attitude of the current crop, which is still trying to find its feet under the guidance of Daniel Vettori. The canny Vettori, who was part of one of the strongest New Zealand sides, understands the limitations of this current team and knows how to maximise the potential. They went down 2-0 to Australia in the Tests in November, but that wasn’t without a fight. And when West Indies toured New Zealand a month later, the rain-marred series ended 0-0. It’s true that the pace attack comprising Mark Gillespie, Chris Martin, Iain O’Brien, Kyle Mills won’t be as potent as the one led by Bond, but the presence of a fit Jacob Oram is bound to be a big boost for the Kiwis. And what these New Zealand medium-pacers need is a track with some juice in it. Totals of 161, 121, 94 and 154 was all India, with Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman, managed in the two Tests they played there in 2002-03. Three of them get their chance to redeem themselves, and there’s a possibility that the Kiwi management may not prepare such greentops as they did six years back. It has a lot to do with the current form of Zaheer Khan and Ishant Sharma and the apparent inexperience of the Kiwi middle-order. But that won’t count too much in the one-dayers and the two T20s, where the Kiwis have been red-hot form of late. The 2-2 draw with Australia in the one-dayers will give them a lot of confidence and with the likes of Oram, Brendom McCullum in their line-up, it can well be one of the trickiest tests for Dhoni’s young brigade. In addition to that, New Zealand also have a habit of throwing up unknown quantity (paceman Simon Doull who won them the 1999 series against India) and it can well be the same this time. So, don’t be too sure if you’re bracing up for an India win Down Under to begin 2009. The Kiwis are bound to test the mettle of this marauding Indian brigade. http://epaper.timesofindia.com/Default/Scripting/ArticleWin.asp?From=Archive&Source=Page&Skin=TOI&BaseHref=TOICH%2F2009%2F02%2F16&ViewMode=GIF&GZ=T&PageLabel=18&EntityId=Ar01801&AppName=1 |

India should just cancel the tour and go back home. I am amazed that Cricket is actually played in NZ." That's where you find most of the desis, and they probably fit your techie profile (25-35 yrs old moving in all guy groups). At least thats what I saw. The other bigger cities hardly have any population, leave alone desis [Indians]. Christchurch has probably less population than Marol [a place in Mumbai]. The annual tourist to inhabitants ratio in most of the cities is also 5-7:1. This means, that in peak season, the tourists easily outnumber the locals in most cities except Auckland." Thank God! 20 year old Southee nearly made me to eat my words. What an innings from Southee and Mills. Indians almost made a mess of an easy victory. Considering Southee's stature in International cricket, he made brutal assault on the Indian bowlers and made 36 of just 20 deliveries with 3 fours and 2 sixes. His batting on this track showed that the pitch is certainly a nightmare for the bowlers. As I have already seen some of the big hitting of Kyle Mills, I was not surprised with Mills' batting. Tailenders of NZ nearly showed that a target of 393 is not a impossible one on this small ground. They almost made a match of it. Their opening batsmen showed no signs of pressure from the start itself. Nearly towards the end, pressure got to Dhoni because of the NZ tailenders big hits. 'If you drink and drive brutally, then you are Ryder' - one of the banner from the crowds was really interesting to watch. Ryder was riding on his luck to score an emphatic hundred. Anyway I don't want to take any credit from Ryder's powerful batting. Some of the shots from NZ batsmen particularly McCullum and Ryder were amazing and suddenly NZ opening batsmen played like classic Indian batsmen. They were playing sensible shots most of the time. Earlier they were off to a quite good start to chase 393. But I am of the opinion McCullum's runout was a turning point of the match. Otherwise, I personally feel that NZ might have made this match really a interesting one. Indian bowlers were almost on par with NZ bowlers. In fact every Indian bowler gave away atleast half century of runs in this match which is certainly a worrying factor. I am not satisfied with Indian bowlers' performance. Everyone went for more than 7 runs per over. Bhajji was a little bit lucky to get away with 5.6 runs per over after the initial onslaught from Ryder. But the middle order collapse made particularly two back-to-back run-outs made Bhajji's bowling little bit easy. Else it is hard to imagine that Bhajji's completion of his full quota of 10 overs with just 5.6 runs per over. I am still wondering why Bhajji bowled to Legstump line frequently irrespective of over or around the wicket. Munaf Patel It seems that he was absolutely confused because of the NZ tailenders' onslaught. They were severe on Yuvraj and Munaf. Overs 37 to 45, yielded NZ exactly 100 runs with a loss of only 2 wickets of tailenders. It is too hard to imagine a Indian win, had NZ lost only 4 or 5 wickets or one of the top batsmen was at the other end at that stage. Indians fielding was way below par. Pathetic fielding in the initial and towards the end their fielding was better. When Dhoni dropped a catch, then our Hindi commentators were yelling that 'Bharat ko mila pehla wicket'. When Zahir broke stumps at the non-strikers' end while one of the NZ batsmen was running with Guptill as bye-runner, then our commentators yelling that 'saathva jadka'. Our hindi commentators Finally, a stable performance is yet to come from the Indians particularly their bowling and fielding in back-to-back matches. Indians should not take things lightly from here onwards. After NZ almost made a match of chasing a very high score of 393, Indians should not be complacent. Their bowling department is still proved to be weak is my observation. Surprisingly Zaheer too failed to come up with good bowling consistently. He bowled well in patches. |

Azhar: Happy somebody outstanding broke it
Mohammed Azharuddin Calcutta: Mohammed Azharuddin’s 62-ball hundred against New Zealand in Vadodara’s Moti Bagh Stadium (December 1988) wasn’t only an India, but a world record, till Sanath Jayasuriya smashed it in April 1996. The former captain’s India-specific record, though, lasted till as recently as Wednesday — when Virender ‘Blaster’ Sehwag lashed a 60-ball hundred in Hamilton. While Azhar had finished on an unbeaten 108 (65 balls), vice-captain Sehwag remained not out on 125 (74 balls) at the Seddon Park. Azhar, who has just taken guard in politics, spoke to The Telegraph on Thursday morning. He praised Sehwag and Team India. The following are excerpts Q When did you get to know that Sehwag had broken your record? A I was in Jaipur for a meeting... That’s where somebody mentioned it... Later, when I had the time, I watched the highlights of the India innings. Disappointed that your record has gone... As they say, records are meant to be broken... I’m happy that somebody as outstanding as Sehwag is the new record-holder... There’s no regret. Are you surprised that your record survived for over 20 years? Indeed, yes... I say that because the game has changed… You have the power-plays and so on... Also, bowling standards, across the world, have fallen. There are more opportunities too, to have a go at any record. What are your memories of your own record? I don’t think anybody mentioned the world record bit at the ground… From what I remember, we’d all been delighted that we could chase 279 (India, under Dilip Vengsarkar, finished on 282 for eight)... Back then, chasing that many was considered a big achievement, somewhat like chasing 350-360 in the present times. So, when did you get to know that you’d created history? When we returned to the hotel... Teammate Rashid Patel gave me the news, ‘Azharbhai, aap ne to world record kar diya’... I recall having had a big partnership with Ajay Sharma, who scored 50. Your record was also against New Zealand... (Laughs) Just a coincidence, you can’t explain such happenings. What’s your take on Sehwag? As I’ve said, he’s outstanding... He’s very positive and doesn’t care about anything, neither the bowling nor the conditions... He should be allowed to play the way he does... He’s had his share of slumps, but has emerged as a pillar of strength for the team. Sehwag’s USP would be... His attitude, he brings a lot of positivity to the team. Actually, Sehwag’s ODI debut (against Pakistan in Mohali, March 1999) was in the period when you were the regular India captain. What did you make of him then? I didn’t play in his debut match... Obviously, he was talented... I’m happy that, like me, he scored a hundred on his Test debut (Bloemfontein, November 2001)... It’s remarkable that somebody who started as a middle-order batsman is making such an impact as an opener... Provided Sehwag stays fit, he could play for another six-seven years and script the future he wants. Team India’s in the middle of a dream run... It’s such a balanced team... Very good batting unit, a couple of very good new-ball bowlers (Zaheer Khan, Ishant Sharma) and a very good spinner in Harbhajan Singh... Balance is critical and this team has it. Your thoughts on the captain, Mahendra Singh Dhoni? He’s good... He trusts his players, which is important… He has confidence in them… Then, because he himself delivers, there’s no pressure of personal-performance. Clearly, the players rally around him. As a batting unit, where would you place this bunch vis-a-vis the outstanding line-ups of the past? I don’t like comparing and, really, one shouldn’t set out to do that... Bowling standards aren’t the same, the game has seen changes... Times have changed… I wouldn’t like to comment. Barring the occasional injury, Sachin Tendulkar is still going great guns. Like a Sourav Ganguly, would you too like to see him around till the 2011 World Cup? Look, it’s going to be a personal call... He has to decide… Of course, I’ll be very happy if Sachin’s available till then, but he has to preserve himself. That’s important. A couple of personal questions... What did you and Pervez Musharraf tell each other in New Delhi the other day? He said he used to follow my career and wanted to know how I was keeping myself busy nowadays… He responded by saying ‘good’, when I informed him that I’d joined the Congress... The final one: Are you standing in the elections? It hasn’t been decided... It’s for the Congress to take that decision... If asked to, I will contest... I’m quite enjoying this innings in politics... I get to meet a lot of people from across society... Politics, I suppose, will help me grow as an individual... I’m new in it, but the experiences so far have been quite different from the ones when I used to be playing. http://www.telegraphindia.com/1090313/jsp/sports/story_10663684.jsp |

I was watching the Last world cup encounter highlight posted by one punniyavan in youtube. NZ score a very low total of 146 and india come to bat. Have to say Shane bond is a beauty of a bowler whom we miss to see in International cricket these days, again thanks to ICL-BCCI. He removes shewag and ganguly effortlessly. Sachin whacks two boundaries and he is out to a blinder slap shot catch to oram off tuffey. The next bond over dravid is dropped by keeper mccullum. And india manages to chase 146 in 40 odd overs.
Where is that NZ Team ?. |

1. There is nothing wrong with the pitch, its the Kiwi's pathetic bowling. Indians bowled well and remember their RR was less than 5 in the middle overs. Only in the last 10 overs understandably they played aggressively. |

Dhoni said at the toss that the pitch will get better for batting as the match progresses. He obviously doesn't want his batsmen getting rolled over in the first couple of hours so it's a safe move. There is a layer of grass on the surface and the NZ openers will have to be careful.
New Zealand expectedly haven't opted for the second spinner. Vettori was quite happy to bat first and Simon Doull said Dhoni's decision was a "bit surprising." The weather conditions are fine, in case you're wondering. |

Dravid hits out at Viru & Laxman
Rahul Dravid rarely speaks about the failings within the side or the mistakes of his co-players. Sunday was an exception, though. After doing his bit to help India towards safety in the second Test here, he seemed to take an indirect shot at stand-in skipper Virender Sehwag, though it could also be possibly interpreted as a swipe at VVS Laxman. “I don’t know the meaning of playing your natural game all the time,’’ he said at the press conference after close of play on Day 4. “You have to play according to the situation of the game. That’s what the great players have done over the years,’’ he added, showing traces of irritability. Sehwag threw his wicket away in the two innings, going for expansive shots. He didn’t say he was playing his natural game (at least not, now), or that he could only play that way. Incidentally, on Saturday, VVS Laxman had defended players dismissed going for expansive strokes. “It’s not that we play irresponsible shots. They bowled to a very disciplined line and length. We all played our natural games. You have to give credit to the bowlers.’’ Times of India |

India face tour's toughest Test
Thank goodness some things like the weather can't be tailored, or else, going by the trend of homogenous pitches, the sameness would have completely taken over. To the disappointment of many, India have largely played in conditions similar to those at home so far on the tour. Admittedly, Christchurch was cold but the flat pitch at the AMI Stadium didn't test them much. India struggled on a nippy pitch in Auckland but the one-day series had already been won by then. In Hamilton and Napier, the Indians found even the weather to their liking - it was warm and sunny. And the less said about the pitch at McLean Park the better. |

Sachin Tendulkar is batsmen of the day. His amazing batting display showed that lot of cricket is still left in him. For me, this is the best innings in this test series. Even though he scored 60 odd runs, it was an innings of mesmerising one. In the previous test matches, he was little edgy at the start. But today, he played exceptionally very well to his true aggressive potential. He was self-assured from the start today. I am personally happy to this cameo than his little shaky start hundreds. For me, his vintage innings of 62 is better than his 160 scored in the first test match. This is the vintage stuff I always expect from Classy Sachin Tendulkar.

54.6 Southee to Dhoni, FOUR, Edged but it goes between gully and slip cordon. Dhoni walked down the track and across, tried to work a full ball from outside off to the on side and it flew through the gap. Dhoni has a sheepish grin on his face as he walks out to have some tea.
55.3 O'Brien to Dhoni, FOUR, edged again between gully and slip. He came forward to play the off drive, the foot landed on the heel and the balance went awry. But again the edge doesn't go to hands. Two slips and gully in. 57.3 O'Brien to Dhoni, no run, beaten outside off. He has been playing that walking shot quite a few times today. Already two edges and now this. He sort of walks into the off drive and the ball rushes past the outside edge. 58.4 Martin to Harbhajan Singh, no run, almost jabbed back to the stumps. It was a length delivery around the off stump, Harbhajan stabbed it off the inner edge and it bounces past the off stump. 59.6 O'Brien to Harbhajan Singh, FOUR, Edged but like Dhoni before, it flies between gully and the slip cordon. It was full and around the off stump, Harbhajan tries to wrist it to the on side and gets a thickish edge. 60.4 Martin to Harbhajan Singh, FOUR, edged over the slips. Full and teasing length outside off, Harbhajan goes hard at the off drive and flashes it over the slip cordon. 62.4 Martin to Harbhajan Singh, 1 run, dropped by Guptill at first gully. It was a very tough chance. Harbhajan wristed the back-of-length delivery and it flew off the edge to right of Guptil who dived to his right but the ball was quickly dying on him and he couldn't hold on. Lots of edges from these two have not gone to the hands and whats more, they have picked up boundaries. 65.2 O'Brien to Harbhajan Singh, no run, length delivery holding its line outside off, Harbhajan has a tentative poke and edges it to his pad and it rolls behind the wicket. 67.4 Vettori to Harbhajan Singh, no run, chipped in the air but safe! The leading edge just falls short of O'Brien at mid-on. 70.1 Franklin to Harbhajan Singh, no run, full pitched outside off stump, Harbhajan went for his off drive but edged it to his pad. 71.1 Vettori to Harbhajan Singh, 1 run, leading edge but lands between cover and point. Catch it was the cry but ... It was floated in on the middle, Harbhajan tried to wrist it to the on side 71.5 Vettori to Harbhajan Singh, 1 run, another edge but again lands safely. Vettori must be tearing his hair apart. It was flighted around the off stump, turning away slightly, Harbhajan went for the big slog sweep and skied it behind midwicket. 73.1 Vettori to Harbhajan Singh, 1 run, Would you believe it, another edge and again he is safe! He went down the track, Vettori dragged back the length and Harbhajan goes down on his knee half-way down the pitch and goes for the slog sweep. The edge comes and it flies over cover |

Zaheer and Bhajji So far, Taylor is the batsman of the day for me. Taylor's dismissal seems to be a dubious one for me. He was in good touch and played very well for his 42. IMO, He was the only batsman to get the better of Indian bowlers today. At one stage, it looked like Taylor was playing on a flat surface against an average attack and others were playing on the minefield against a good attack. Still Sachin is batsman of test test so far. New Zealand 160/7 (54.3 ov) Feddy OK. |

Respect the genius
Two cheap dismissals in pursuit of sixes have suddenly made some people call Virender Sehwag an irresponsible batsman. From a match-winner whose audacious strikes to even good-length balls were being hailed as strokes of genius, he is now being castigated for being reckless and not playing in the team's interests. Funny how perceptions change from one extreme to another because of the premium we seem to place on success. We live in times where the success percentage has to be 100 for you to be any good. Had Bradman lived in the India of today, he would've been criticized for failing to maintain an average of 100, and not been celebrated for his astounding skill. Perhaps it is the fate of men like Sehwag — who live by the sword — that opinion about them continue to vacillate. The day they decimate bowlers with shots not found in the textbook, the world will acknowledge them as a genius. And the day they fail to conjure up strokes in defiance of batting grammar, they are berated and cautioned to play responsibly. You can make runs the Rahul Dravid way: with sound technique as the cornerstone on which to build a skilful, patient innings. You can make runs the Sachin Tendulkar way: striking a fine balance between perfect technique and daring. And you can make runs the Virender Sehwag way: toying with technique to create strokes that put the fear of God in bowlers. Someone like Tendulkar, who combines the skills of Dravid with the audacity of Sehwag, and also knows which method to use when, falls in the category of immortals. It is pointless discussing him. But needless to say that in the long run, batsmen like Dravid will score more runs and have a better average than Sehwag, who is a rare breed. His genius lies in mocking conventional wisdom that technique is central to batting success. His genius also lies in having created a path you admire but always dread to follow. He's created his own grammar, and made capital out of it. When he hits a six to reach his hundred, we all celebrate it. When he fails to repeat the same feat and gets caught at the boundary line, we are shocked and wonder if the risk was worth taking. The thin line between success and failure separates genius from mediocrity. In Sehwag's case, that line gets blurred too often. When he wins us matches, we hail him the greatest ever. When he fails, we feel he's made us lose, and react with anger. Maybe the fault lies with us. We don't respect him for what he is — a path breaker and an entertainer par excellence. http://www.hindustantimes.com/StoryPage/StoryPage.aspx?sectionName=HomePage&id=70cf2599-40a0-4e10-932a-703607524bc6&Headline=Respect+the+genius |

Well, may be. Looking back, yes, if we would have declared early with target of 500+ then we could have comfortably won this Test. But again as a captain, Dhoni's declaration made perfect sense. Sitting on a 1-0 lead, he was right in setting a target of 600+ and putting this Test beyond NZ. He just wanted to kill even the remotest of chance for NZ to win this Test and hence level the series. |

Dark cloud over Dhoni
At tea time on the third day of the third Test, when Laxman and Gambhir were walking off the field to have a cup of Dilmah Masala Chai (and possibly some complimentary batata vadas and dhoklas sent over by the local Indian tea-shop), India were 448 runs ahead of New Zealand. Let's just stop for a second and examine these figures again. At tea-time on the third day of a Test, the world's No. 3 Test team, had a lead larger than any target successfully chased in the fourth innings of some 1918 tests played in 132 years. Over the world's No. 8 team, one they had bowled out for 197 runs in the first innings of the same Test. Two days later, when the Indian team trooped off the field, they were still looking for the last New Zealand two wickets. |

Wisden names Viru world’s best player
Dhoni Chosen Captain Of Dream Test XI TIMES NEWS NETWORK Less than a month after The Times of India hailed him as “perhaps the best batsman in the world today” on its front page, Wisden, regarded as cricket’s Bible, has declared Virender Sehwag the leading cricketer of the world in 2008. “Sehwag is a marvel of modern times, a genius who has confounded conventional wisdom, whose daring is now a part of cricket’s folklore,” writes the cricket almanac in its 146th edition. Last year, the nawab of Najafgarh smashed 319 off 304 balls, the fastest triple century ever, against South Africa. His unbeaten 201 against Sri Lanka gave India its only Test triumph in a nightmarish series. Through the year, no other batsman achieved more mental domination over bowlers than him. Who else can begin a cricket tour hitting three sixes of the first three balls? There’s even more for Indian fans to rejoice. This year’s Wisden Test XI has five Indian cricketers. No other country has more than two. MS Dhoni has been named the team’s captain, affirming his talismanic leadership. Sachin Tendulkar inevitably figures. So does Zaheer Khan, who’s proved lethal with old ball and new, across diverse conditions. And then there’s Harbhajan Singh, proving that he can be a serious threat even when he’s monkeying around. India has the largest representation in the Test squad, followed by Australia (Ricky Ponting and Mitchell Johnson) and South Africa (Graeme Smith and Dale Steyn) who have two each. Flamboyant batsman Kevin Pietersen is the lone English player in the XI, while the West Indies is represented by runmachine Shivnarine Chanderpaul. Smith is Dhoni’s deputy in the side. The three selectors who picked the squad were former India captain Ravi Shastri, retired West Indian pacer Ian Bishop and former New Zealand stumper Ian Smith. “The criteria for selection are simple: the best eleven to play a Test match, no matter the opposition, guided by performances in 2008, and taking into consideration the amount of Test cricket they played in the year, the quality of their opponents, and that indefinable blend of class and form,” Wisden said. Wisden Test XI of 2008: Virender Sehwag (India), Graeme Smith (South Africa), Ricky Ponting (Australia), Sachin Tendulkar (India), Kevin Pietersen (England), Shivnarine Chanderpaul (West Indies), Mahendra Sing Dhoni (India), Harbhajan Singh (India), Mitchell Johnson (Australia), Dale Steyn (South Africa) and Zaheer Khan (India). http://epaper.timesofindia.com/Default/Scripting/ArticleWin.asp?From=Archive&Source=Page&Skin=TOINEW&BaseHref=TOICH%2F2009%2F04%2F09&ViewMode=GIF&GZ=T&PageLabel=16&EntityId=Ar01602&AppName=1 |

LM - Complacency? we got 18 wkts of them and say half an hour more of play and we cud have sealed a win - thts almost like winning in jus more than 4 days. Guess Gambhir spilled a difficult chance and Munaf (ivan oru vethu fielder) dropped another. Ishant's catch hurt us i guess with the famous Chris Martin due to come in next. |

Gambhir said it perfectly, if we cannot get them out in 5 sessions then we dont deserve to win!! the fact that we didnt even get 3 sessions full was the issue. |

Spilling the catches was an indication of complacency too. Sehwag and Munaf bowled 14 overs on the trot after tea on 4th day. Harbhajan was bowling really well at that time. A few overs by him or Zaheer would have made things different. Ellam hypothesis-dhan. But I have a feeling that India didn't really press for a win. |

It was eminent that there could be rains on 5th day. I don't know how the team think tank believed that we would get 5 sessions to play. |

TBH, I didn't watch that session, but my friend said the same, albeit in a harsh tone "Konjam kooda seriousness-e illama vilaiyaandanunga".
All said and done, I hope our team doesn't give room to these kinda things in future |

Was checking out the future tours in cricinfo - http://www.cricinfo.com/db/FORTHCOMING/FUTURE_TOURS/2009.html. Really not much coming up for India. Our next Test series is going to be as far away as November against SL! Till then, Dravid & VVS will be left in the lurch! |
