Announcing the one day team before the 4th test is the most ridiculous thing .
The selectors continue to prove that they are a bunch of jokers. |

so. when do you want the team to be announced , after the test is over? with 3 days to go for the ODIs.
oh, come on, the players selected for the odis need time to pack their bags and board the plane. although, i agree dropping seniors is a bad move to some extent. cos, they have just won a historic test match. atleast they cud've been part of the odis and the selectors cud've used rotation policy to test the new players later in the series. but, on the other hand they can't have a bigger team on tour and also we lost the series in india inspite of having the big three. |

this is a huge gamble by the way in choosing a young team for a high profile ODI series but would look like a masterstroke if INDIA manages to put in a good performance looking forward to the likes of uthappa, raina and rohit showing their worth and cementing their places...... |

Hayden challenges India to win in Adelaide
ADELAIDE: Opener Matthew Hayden has said Australia were undeterred by the Perth loss and challenged India to prove their claims of superiority in the fourth and final cricket Test at Adelaide. Ganguly said India played better than the hosts this summer while Prasad declared that the visiting side had the best attack in the world. "I would say there is no other side in the world that comes close to us when we are playing our best," said Hayden, whose 86 consecutive Test streak was broken when he missed the Perth match due to hamstring injury. "We have had a little glitch in the radar. I don't suspect that will be in our mindset in preparing for this Test. Ultimately, we are still 2-1 up in the series, so I am not sure we are bottom-dwellers just yet," he was quoted as saying in the 'Herald Sun'. The Hayden 36-year-old hard-hitting Australian batsman refused to agree that tourists' attack was now the best in the business after proving themselves at WACA. "We will see. We have a very talented side. It is unbelievable. A week ago cricket was boring because Australia was so dominant. We have a very good bowling line-up going into these conditions. We saw that in Sydney," he said. Hayden said he was fit to play India in the fourth and final Test later this week. "I am in. It is as simple as that. I have already done fitness tests this week," said Hayden, who has scored 307 runs at 76.75 this series. "I feel comfortable where I am at with my hamstring and I have prepared like I would for any Test. I am ready to go. I am in pretty good shape." 10-8 nu head to head irundhum ivanunga vaai pechu koraya maatengudhu |

As regards tests, once the famous 4 batsmen --- Sachin , Dravid, Ganguly , Lakshman all leave & Kumble also quits, there will be a big gap in terms of replacing such a world class line up we have now. IMO, there is no such talent in India matching the skills of the above. Hence, the victories we have achieved recently may not be countable. I predict all of them retiring in a space of 2 years from now. The comic selectors may be hasten their retirement by axing even on tests.
So, it’s not a great sign for Indian cricket as regards tests. Murali Karthik is a genuine spinner & a world class bowler . Wonder why he was sidelined & Piyush Chawla being picked !! ( Ofcourse Piyush also is a decent bowler & a good prospect ) but time and again the axe falling on Murali is not acceptable . Despite bowling brilliantly , Murali is not being considered !! There must be dirty politics again. Dinesh Karthik should thank his stars that he survived all the political games . Wish he uses this opportunity and secures his place. There is no solid opening pair for tests . Jaffer has been exposed just now. Sehwag is a big gamble. Dinesh Karthik is a good batsman but not a qualified opener. Looks like Srilanka have already worked out their plans to replace the vacuum that will be created by the likes of Jayasurya. While India is far behind. |

IMO he played a pivotal role in that sydney test with a good partnership with kumble (not in terms of runs) until that silly padding up to symonds and in perth he was one of the key players for victory - and now you wanna drop him (it should not be the way even if he wasnt VC) |

The first issue for me is did Harbhajan Singh say the word “monkey” or “big monkey”? I have heard evidence from Andrew Symonds, Michael Clarke and Mathew Hayden that he did say these words. Harbhajan Singh denies saying these words. Both umpires did not hear nor did Ricky Ponting or Sachin Tendulkar. I am satisfied and sure beyond reasonable doubt that Harbhajan Singh did say these words. |

Whatever may have been said between them prior to Harbhajan Singh calling Andrew Symonds a monkey is irrelevant. There is a history between these two players. |

Irfan opener?! Opening batsman and opening bowler for a test match? This will spoil his stamina. It is a test match where you are supposed to play for long hours. Then Irfan will become jack of all trades.Too much of pressure will make him out of form.He is good in this spot. Let him stay in the middle order.
However this gamble might work for limited over cricket, someone like Johnson who played for Zimbabwe a decade ago. |

now to remind ourselves of the bad sydney match - not to reiterate the same story of umpires robbing etc - but for those who missed the match and those interested
Day 1, Over 13.1 (Aus inning 1): Ponting edges to Dhoni down the leg side, but the umpire rules it not out. Snicko shows a clear edge. Questionable Decision Against Quotient (QDAQ): Aus 0, Ind 1 Day 1, Over 29.5 (Aus inning 1): Ricky Ponting gets a thick inside edge onto his pads, but is given out LBW to his spin nemesis, Harbhajan. QDAQ: Aus 1, Ind 1 Day 1, Over 46.4 (Aus inning 1): Ishant induces a healthy edge by Symonds that is taken by Dhoni behind the stumps. Bucknor turns down the appeal. In an end-of the day interview, Symonds confirmed he snicked the ball, and was lucky to survive. QDAQ: Aus 1, Ind 2 Day 1, Over 55.3 (Aus inning 1): Dhoni whips the bails off to a Kumble delivery. A 3rd umpire decision is requested. His decision is “Not out” after watching just one angle. Replays with the next angle shows Symond’s foot was not grounded behind the crease. QDAQ: Aus 1, Ind 3 Day 2, Over 101.5 (Aus inning 1): India’s appeal for a stumping of Symonds off Harbhajan Singh is negatived by umpire Bucknor. He doesn’t bother calling for the 3rd umpire. Replays show that Symonds was outside his crease. QDAQ: Aus 1, Ind 4 Day 2, Over 102.5 (Aus inning 1): Brett Lee is given out LB to Kumble, though the pacer has a big step forward. Hawkeye suggests the ball wouldn’t have hit the stumps. QDAQ: Aus 2, Ind 4 Day 3, Over 78.2 (Ind inning 1): Michael Clarke has a huge shout for LB off Tendulkar. The delivery the batsman on the pads, and initial impressions suggest it was missing leg. However, the Cricinfo commentator types, after watching the Hawkeye simulation a few overs later: “Replays of the previous shout against him suggest it was a mighty close thing and he could easily have been a gon(n)er”. QDAQ: Aus 3, Ind 4 Day 4, Over 41.1 (Aus inning 2): Anil Kumble has a low delivery striking Hussey’s pads. Hawkeye shows the ball clipping leg stump. The umpire turns down the appeal. QDAQ: Aus 3, Ind 5 Day 5, Over 6.1 (Ind inning 2): Jaffer is bowled by a lightning-quick jaffa by Brett Lee. Why question the dismissal? Just that Brett Lee clearly overstepped, and you be bowled off a no-ball! QDAQ: Aus 3, Ind 6 Day 5, Over 33.1 (Ind inning 2): Dravid plays no stroke to a Symonds delivery, bat clearly tucked behind pad. Gilchrist and all the Aussies appeal vociferously, and umpire Bucknor assents. Snicko shows no noise as the ball passes bat. QDAQ: Aus 3, Ind 7 Day 5, Over 40.2 (Ind inning 2): Ganguly edges, and slipper Michael Clarke comes up with the ball, There is doubt whether the ball carried, and umpire Benson asks Ponting. The captain checks with the fielder and raises his hand, confirming that the fielder believes he caught it clean. Replays are not conclusive, and there is clear doubt whether the ball carried. Later replays show the ball might have bounced, and also that Clarke might have grounded the ball when he rolled over to complete the catch. There’s no reference to the 3rd umpire who might have given the benefit of doubt to the batsman. QDAQ: Aus 3, Ind 8 That’s 8 to 3 against India, a pretty terrible 2.67:1 ratio for a high total of 11 questionable decisions. . There are a couple of other interesting incidents on Cricinfo, but these were not included since they weren’t 100% clear, and would start to get into subjective levels! Day 1, Over 73.3 (Aus inning 1): Symonds is hit low on his pads in front of middle stump as he attempts a sweep off Anil Kumble. The umpire negatives the appeal. Would the ball have hit the stumps? Day 4, Over 53.4 (Aus inning 2): RP Singh has a loud shout off Hussey. There’s a big noise, and replays suggest he nicked it. The batsman is adjudged not out. Cricinfo’s comments suggest it might have been an appeal for caught behind. If these were considered, the QDAQ could have been 10:3 against India. India need to win and the selection of the one-day squad couldn't have been more ill-timed. But it's time they put it behind them and look at the challenge on hand. It was fitting that Sourav Ganguly led India's huddle on the day before their most important Test in recent times. Standing in the centre, he addressed the close-knit group for about two minutes. He was captain when India were here last and, despite the recent murmurs about his one-day exclusion, would have known best how to spur his team-mates on. |

"
Fast bowler preparing for comeback "The Aussies should be worried I am coming" - Sreesanth Sriram Veera in Delhi January 23, 2008 I love the spotlight. The Aussies should be worried I am coming." Meet the quote-a-minute, bold and brash Sreesanth. He even refers to himself in the third person. "Sreesanth's way is to be aggressive. Sreesanth will always remain Sreesanth." Sreesanth was in Delhi, where it's bitterly cold, as the chief guest for the Gatorade Pacers' talent hunt but didn't allow the weather to dampen his spirits. The press descended on the arena and he indulged them, extensively and individually. Even as the event wrapped up in the evening and the attendees hurried towards the warmth of their cars, Sreesanth was addressing his audience, revelling in the spotlight. A shoulder injury had ruled him out of the home Tests against Pakistan and the ongoing series in Australia but he has been training and is ready to make a comeback during the triangular series in Australia in February. "More than their [Australia's] batsmen, I have been working on my own bowling," Sreesanth said. "I felt my left arm was not kicking into the bowling action properly. So I went back to the technique I picked up at the MRF Pace Foundation years before. I held a ball in my left hand too and, now, I had to drag it back down so that I could hurl the one in my right hand properly. As a result, the left palm doesn't open out and the hand doesn't fall away. I have just worked on my load-up too and I'm very pleased with the way everything is going." He cannot wait to get to Australia. He recounted with glee the sledging in the recent Australia-India encounters that he played in and took pride in how "we [India] never backed down. Why should we? We have players who can give it back with interest." It's not all hot air, though, and his talent for the verbal battle surfaced when he told of an incident involving Brian Lara. "He [Lara] defended a ball with an exaggerated back-and-across movement and I just stood there and murmured my disapproval," Sreesanth said. "Next ball he was beaten and I said, 'is this the King Charles Lara? Who is this impostor, moving around nervously? Sreesanth: "I asked him [Andre Nel], 'how was that slap and where is your tongue now?' He just went quietly back to his run-up" © Getty Images "I should have kept my mouth shut for the next ball - mind you, it was a length ball - Lara just pulled it over the church beyond the boundary! He is a true legend." Sreesanth's cricketing life seems to be a series of Youtube moments. He explained his famous dance after hitting Andre Nel for a six in Johannesburg. "He [Nel], along with [Mark] Boucher and [Herschelle] Gibbs were constantly at me. Nel tapped his chest and said, 'you need a big heart to play' and he sniffed in the air and said, 'I smell blood.' I sniffed back, 'where where?' and prayed to God to give me the strength to hit that six. You should have seen his face. I asked him, 'how was that slap and where is your tongue now?' He just went quietly back to his run-up." They manner in which Sreesanth re-tells these incidents makes you feel that he enjoys the adrenalin rush in the middle. In his mind, he is the biggest star in the world and the cricket field is a great stage for him to enact his own script. "What's the worst that can happen? Six sixes? I can always come back next over. All I need is just one ball to get him [the batsman] out." Unlike other bowlers who remember their wickets, Sreesanth remembers how many catches were dropped off him. "They will tell me I took x number of wickets but I will add these dropped catches to them. It helps me lift myself when my mood is down." Sreesanth's brother actually records the number of dropped catches and keeps him informed and motivated. In February, Sreesanth will once again encounter the likes of Matthew Hayden and Andrew Symonds with whom he has had run-ins in the past. Unless he has mellowed down during his forced rest, expect more fiery exchanges on the field. |

"They're not going to win, they're scared," Sehwag said on a day when Australia managed 260 runs for the loss of three wickets. "They are playing so defensively. They just got 260 in a day on a flat track; that's not like Australia. Last time they scored more than 400 in a day at Adelaide. I think they're scared of defeat."
Were India surprised by Australia's approach? "Yes, it was a surprise," he said without hesitation. "There is something wrong in their batting line-up or thinking. It didn't matter whether we set a field for attacking or defensive cricket, they were not playing too many shots. It was very frustrating with the wicket being so flat. We were waiting for the bad shot." |

Mr Hayden gave evidence that he was changing his position at slip at the end of the over. While not hearing any other words in the exchange or being able to recall them he also stated he heard Mr Singh call Mr Symonds a big monkey. He was adamant those were the words he heard although he could recall no others. |
Quote: |
[45] In this case there is a direct conflict as to whether or not the words were said. Mr Symonds accepted that in at least part of the heated exchange Mr Singh used his native tongue. Both Mr Singh and Mr Tendulkar gave evidence that he used words in his own language that were similar to monkey. On the other hand the three Australian players consider they heard the words "big monkey".
[46] Mr Procter also noted in his decision that he did not consider the umpires or Mr Tendulkar were in a position to hear the words. I have of course had the advantage of seeing extensive video footage which in fact establishes that Mr Tendulkar was within earshot and could have heard the words. Indeed it is now clear Mr Tendulkar did hear the exchange but not the words alleged. [47] I accept that Messrs Hayden, Clarke and Symonds are satisfied themselves that they thought they heard the words "big monkey". Indeed it is clear from the audio material they immediately confronted Mr Singh in this regard. I am satisfied that Mr Singh denied this to Umpire Benson. But we are in a situation where there are cultural, accent and language differences and where it is accepted that some of Mr Singh's remarks were in his own language. Mr Hayden and Mr Tendulkar in particular were impressive witnesses. But their evidence as to what was said by Mr Singh is completely at odds. Mr Tendulkar said there was offensive words in Mr Singh's native tongue and he also heard abusive language in English between the two. Mr Hayden says he heard the words "big monkey" but could not recall for the court any other words that were said by either party. I remind myself that an honest witness remains a witness who may be mistaken. In my view there remains the possibility of a misunderstanding in this heated situation. As well it is not without significance that the Australian players maintain other than Mr Symonds that they did not hear any other words spoken only the ones that are said to be of significance to this hearing. This is a little surprising in the context where there was a reasonably prolonged heated exchange. Indeed Mr Clarke went so far as to say that he did not hear Mr Symonds say anything. Given Mr Symonds' own acceptance that he initiated the exchange and was abusive towards Mr Singh, that is surprising. This failure to identify any other words could be because some of what they were hearing was not in English. |
Quote: |
Mr Singh had innocently, and in the tradition, of the game acknowledged the quality of Mr Lee's bowling. That interchange had nothing to do with Mr Symonds but he determined to get involved and as a result was abusive towards Mr Singh. Mr Singh was, not surprisingly, abusive back. He accepts that his language was such as to be offensive under 2.8. But in my view even if he had used the words "alleged" an "ordinary person" standing in the shoes of Mr Symonds who had launched an unprovoked and unnecessary invective laden attack would not be offended or insulted or humiliated in terms of 3.3. |

'Character assassination of Symonds would be unfair'
Australia disappointed with handling of case - Ponting Brydon Coverdale in Melbourne January 31, 2008 Ricky Ponting says some of the Australia players are disappointed that Harbhajan Singh's penalty over the incident with Andrew Symonds in the Sydney Test was downgraded to 50% of his match fee. However, Ponting believes it is time for Australia and India to move past the racism saga. Justice John Hansen said in his judgment that database and human errors meant a previous offence - Harbhajan was fined 75% of his match fee and give a one-Test suspended sentence in 2001 - was not revealed to the assisting counsel at the time of sentencing. Ponting said the appeal, which was heard on Tuesday, provided the players with closure but it had not been handled as well as possible. "The judge has made it pretty clear today that even he was a bit disappointed with the severity, or non-severity, of his findings, basically because he wasn't handed some pretty vital and important information," Ponting said. "There's no doubt that there'd be a few players in the Australian dressing-room that would be a little bit disappointed with the outcome as well, knowing what we now know. "I'm sure that Cricket Australia will get to the bottom of that. It's not up to me or up to the players. The case is closed, it can't ever be reopened. Cricket Australia will take it up with the appropriate people and let's hope that sort of stuff doesn't slip through the net again." Ponting's comments were similar to those that came earlier in the day from Cricket Australia's chief executive James Sutherland, who said he was disappointed Hansen was not given all the facts. "The judge's decision is final, we accept that, there was an unfortunate error in circumstances that led to him not having all the facts in front of him at that time, but that's gone," Sutherland said. Harbhajan was accused of calling Symonds a "monkey" - Symonds had been subjected to monkey chants from spectators during Australia's ODI tour of India in October - but Hansen said Symonds could not be certain if Harbhajan had used the word. Ponting said Symonds would be keen to move on and he hoped the case did not affect Symonds' reputation. "Any sort of character assassination on Andrew Symonds would be completely unfair," Ponting said. "He's someone who doesn't want this stuff happening, it's the second time with what he had to go through in India as well, and it's the last thing in the world he wants." Ponting was speaking in Melbourne ahead of Friday's Twenty20 international between Australia and India, and he said he was looking forward to again focusing on the cricket instead of off-field issues. "It has taken a toll on [Symonds] and it's taken a toll on me over the last few weeks," Ponting said. "We're dealing with stuff in the middle of games that we don't want to be talking about or thinking about. It's consumed us all for enough time. It's been on my mind for four weeks, really, from the moment it happened I've been thinking about all this stuff." Brydon Coverdale is a staff writer at Cricinfo |

Why India tired of being little brother - Harsha Bhogle
WHAT a hullabaloo all of us have created! Have India and Australia, bound together by our still noble game, gone to war? Words are flying like missiles, positions are being taken as if bunkers were being built. What has happened? An allegation was made and judgment was passed to the contrary. It happens every day. Australia think India are flexing their muscles or, should one say, rupees, unfairly. India think Australia have had things much their own way for too long and the time is nigh for retribution. Newspapers are selling more copies, news channels are filling up time, and simple minds are being influenced. Let's take a backward step, not a great idea on a playing field, especially if you wear the Aussie coat of arms, but a necessary action off it. Are India flexing their muscles? Three examples have been given. One, that Steve Bucknor was asked to leave. That happens. Employers sack employees, selectors drop players when they are not performing. Umpires have been asked to leave the elite panel in the past. Two, Harbhajan Singh was allowed to play on. That is part of the ICC's rules; pending an appeal a cricketer can play. Three, Harbhajan has got away with a slap on the wrist in spite of three players claiming he racially abused Andrew Symonds. Maybe he did, but maybe he didn't. The players who think they heard what he said might feel disappointed, but that is not how the law works. If judgment was to be made based on what one person said versus what another did, the world would become unlivable. People have got off death row for lack of evidence. And I'm afraid cricketers, irrespective of the colour of the jersey they wear, have long forfeited the right to have their word trusted. Anybody who appeals knowing a batsman is not out, and in doing so leads an umpire towards making a mistake, cannot ask that his word be taken. And what about India asking for a chartered plane to stand by? There was absolutely no way India were going to use that plane, and if I was Judge John Hansen, I would have said: "Keep it there as long as you want because all I'm concerned with is the evidence." If, as we now know, there was no evidence, the plane wouldn't have been needed anyway. And if there was evidence, presented in a judge's court before eminent lawyers, India would have had no case to protest against. If they had still gone home, they would have lost the right to play cricket and that would have been in the fitness of things. The world rebounded from the depression of the War, and the game would have recovered. It has seen more periods of economic boom and bust than you and I have. Had India heard Harbhajan calling Symonds a "big monkey", there would have been enough voices in India asking for his head. This voice would have been one of the first. Are prospects of Australians playing in the IPL weakened? For a day maybe, for two at best. Respected corporate houses have paid serious money to buy franchises because they want their teams to win. If Ponting makes 60 from 38 balls in the first game and leads Kolkata to victory, nobody will complain. Didn't Cristiano Ronaldo play alongside Wayne Rooney for Manchester United after the last World Cup? Heard any United fans complaining about him recently? This game is bigger than those who make pronouncements about it, its devotees are astute. So why is India so sensitive about what is happening in Australia? Since I was a little child, my abiding memory is of visiting journalists and cricketers coming to India and making fun of us. We were a country finding our feet, we were not confident, we seethed within but we accepted. The new generation in India is not as accepting, they are prouder, more confident, more successful. Those bottled-up feelings are bubbling through. This is the great dawn of acceptance. It is a phase both countries must understand, this is the storm before the lull. Let's play cricket. We're only a small family. |

"Why should we?" We have players who can give it back with interest. What's the worst that can happen? Six sixes? I can always come back next over. "All I need is just one ball to get (the batsman) out." |

Australia v India, Twenty20 international, Melbourne
Ponting out of Twenty20 match Brydon Coverdale in Melbourne February 1, 2008 Ricky Ponting has been ruled out of today's Twenty20 match against India in Melbourne as he continues to struggle with a back injury. Ponting batted in the nets on the morning of the game but Australia decided not to risk him and will now attempt to have him ready for Sunday's opening CB Series match against India at the Gabba. "He pulled up pretty sore this morning," Australia's coach Tim Nielsen said. "His back is just not 100% and with the uncertain nature of Twenty20 cricket and the frantic nature of it we're just a bit concerned that if he has to dive in the first over if we're fielding and pulls up very sore it could leave us one short." Michael Clarke will captain Australia for the second time in two months and he is set to lead a side with one debutant after Nielsen confirmed David Hussey would play his first match in Australian colours. Brad Hodge will slot into Ponting's No.3 position and Ben Hilfenhaus has been named the 12th man. Nielsen said with the first tri-series match only two days away there was no guarantee Ponting would be available, and the travel to Brisbane was a concern. "Today's decision was all about today," Nielsen said. "We'll have to keep assessing him and see how he goes each game from here." Nielsen was confident his players could move on from the controversial Test series and he was impressed with the resolve of the individuals in the team. "Don't for a second think that this is an easy thing to go through for anybody," Nielsen said of the aftermath of the Sydney Test. "It's been draining on our whole group. To be able to continually come out and play as well as we have as a group of individuals and as a collective team is something we're very proud of." |

Anybody who appeals knowing a batsman is not out, and in doing so leads an umpire towards making a mistake, cannot ask that his word be taken.

What a shame on the part of the Indians today, they are the World Champions of this format and for sometime they were running a risk of being bowled out under the lowest ever total in the Twenty20s. The batsmen seemed to hurry a touch too early and never got going, the wickets kept tumbling all the time and the Indians have just managed to beat the Kenyans by 1 run. barring Irfan Pathan, the rest of the scores in the Indian scorecard looks like a telephone number. Can the Indians do something miraculous? As of now, it looks like India will suffer their second only defeat in this version of the game. Stay connected...

1. We are not crying foul since they were removed from the team. I am totally pissed with the reasons they gave and Ganguly has been playing well unlike RD when he was sacked. What have they replaced Gangluly with?? And why would someone want to sack a player, who is on top of his game ?? Whats the freakin need NOW?? Only SRT and SG are the veterans in the team (we have uthappa/Dhoni/Yuvi/Bowlers). What the eff did they accomplish or are they going to accomplish sacking SG??
2. Dhoni????? |

Tonty 20 isnt a thing to be boasted about and i repeat again its a bolt out of the blue victory. If you think that this is the best team we have ever had then God bless Indian cricket . FYI, after this great one-off tonto-tonty, there's a ODI series and we will be playing against Australia and Sri Lanka. 50/50 format. In short, who the f cares about tonty-tonty? T20 doesnt require the temparament/technique ala ODIs and similar to that ODIs doesnt require the technique similar to Tests - its all different formats of the game and jus coz our fav's were not a part of the WC victory, pls dont take away its importance. wonder whether the same arguments wud have been put forward had the big 3 been a part of the T20 WC winning team?! |
