ICC World Twenty20 Group A, Johannesburg: South Africa 208-2 (17.4 ovs) bt West Indies 205-6 (20 ovs) by 8 wkts
By Jamie Lillywhite Gayle gave the tournament the thrilling start it deserved Chris Gayle struck the first Twenty20 international ton but South Africa beat West Indies by eight wickets in the opening match of the ICC World event. Gayle blasted 10 sixes, another record, in a pulsating 117 from 57 balls. Graeme Smith was hit painfully on the hand off the first ball as South Africa chased 206 but the Windies missed three catches and leaked a record 23 wides. Herschelle Gibbs, with a runner, fired 13 fours and two sixes in an epic 90 to seal victory with 14 balls remaining. The bright lights and carnival atmosphere even affected the languid Gayle, who skipped out to the wicket like a prize fighter. Freed from the pressure of captaincy, fthe Jamaican flicked Shaun Pollock over mid-wicket for the opening six in the third over and then dished out the punishment to Makhaya Ntini. A lofted drive straight down the ground was followed next ball by a stupendous towering stroke that soared like a firework into the second tier at long-off. We didn't do ourselves any justice by dropping catches and bowling wides. It really cost us in this game Ramnaresh Sarwan Another extraordinary stroke brought him six more as he leant back to slice over third man and before long he dispatched the ball clean out of the massive Wanderers stadium. The big shots continued with the Johannesburg altitude aiding aerial hitting - and all awhile dancers in camouflage hot pants gave the crowd extra entertainment. Having appeared to damage his arm with another whirling dervish follow through for six, Gayle decided to flick one casually next ball - and hit it even further. The shell-shocked South African fielders were compelled to shake Gayle's hand when his incredible innings ended with a top-edge straight up in the 17th over. However the other West Indies batsmen were less effective and the resultant total was never out of reach on such a good wicket. Beginning their quest to score in excess of 10 an over, the Proteas saw their captain floored by a hostile opening delivery from Daren Powell. Smith bravely battled on but was clearly impaired and it benefited his team when he drove to cover. Gibbs defied the pain to lead his team to a remarkable win With the score on 59-1 and Gibbs on 20, Dwayne Bravo juggled and spilled a crucial chance on the cover boundary. Dwayne Smith conceded 20 from his opening over and the required rate dipped below 10 for the first time. But after Fidel Edwards came on for the ninth over and sent down the 14th wide, he ousted AB de Villiers who got a towering leading edge. With 100 needed from the final 10 overs Gibbs was dropped on the boundary again by Shiv Chanderpaul and reached the 100 stand from 50 balls with the powerful Justin Kemp, who was badly missed at long-off by Samuels. Gibbs defied an injury of his own to display some superb clean hitting, sharing 120 with Kemp (46). The Windies were left to rue their lax display in the field and their failure to build on Gayle's outstanding innings. South Africa's Shaun Pollock: "We had one report that showed the first scan and it showed no break [to Graeme Smith's hand]. He will have another scan but hopefully he should be OK. "We had a fantastic crowd in here tonight. It was an awesome innings from Chris Gayle. "For someone to get a big hundred like that and [for us] to knock off [the target] comfortably in the end gives us a lot of confidence." West Indies skipper Ramnaresh Sarwan: "We didn't do ourselves any justice by dropping quite a few catches and bowling quite a few wides. I think it really cost us in this game. "We also lost our way a bit with the bat in the last five overs or so. We should have scored 15 or 20 more more runs. "I don't think it's because of a lack of practice. We just have to pick ourselves up and get it right in the next game." http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/cricket/6988167.stm |

19.5 Bracken to Taylor, 4 leg byes, and that's it! A remarkable victory for Zimbabwe, as that's turned finely through fine leg and races away eluding a diving Clark at full stretch on the rope - but he's beaten and so are Australia. Astonishing. |

This is a 20-20 match and not a 50 over match. Gautham HAD to go for it because Dhoni was doing nothing but scoring singles. I mean, it was as if he was not even intending scoring more than 1 run! 6-7 runs an over, for 3-4 overs when the asking rate is 10/12+ is not good enough... And what's with this finishing the match business??? For heaven's sake, the team consists not only of opening batsman - the middle-order batsmen are supposed to PLAY too.... |

when india were 2 down, i think the 3rd wicket partnership was crucial. gautam had hit a six plus four singles would make 10 for that over. Daniel vettori is not yuvaraj or jeetan patel that he will let you hit him for sixes. for heaven's sake, why do they say its always tough to get a set batsmen out? |

Ajit Agarkar For Captain I think the press and the BCCI are insulting India's greatest ever cricketer by not even considering his name. He is the best choice for the following reasons 1. Match Winner 2. Guaranteed Place in Test, ODI, Twenty20 teams for next 10 years 3. Guaranteed to play in 2011 and 2015 world cups 4. His performance cannot drop below his current levels because of captaincy pressures 5. The only cricket player to have delivered consistent performance all through his career. 6. Can be relied upon to deliver during crunch situations. 7. Tries his level best to ensure victory even if situation is dire. 8. Will never fail to deliver on people's expectations. What more does anybody want? Can anybody contest/dispute even one of the above-mentioned 8 points? Just try, I say. |

Initially I thought RPS for the 19th over was a silly move. But if Johinder bowls the 19th over he would have bowled couple of loose deliveries and might gave Aussies to hit 'take-able' runs in the last over. Good thinking Dhoni! Slater in the match "7 out of 10 chances Clarke hits the stumps. You cant take any chances. Dhoni and India are lucky enough to survive" I said " Just shut up man!" Cant believe that Bret Lee a cool customer exchanged some words with the Indian openers, resulting - tournament highest sixer 119 m Thevayada ungalukellam Great day for Indian cricket |

Yuvraj was out of the world, totally unbelievable stuff. I mean 9 overs 48/2 I almost lost hope. 4. I also lost hope when it was 3 overs and 30 runs to get. What an amzing over by bhajji! 5. Sreesanth, control yourself, everyday is not a sunday and you are no Glenn McGrath to indulge in sledging, you are still an average bowler. 6. IMO, Yuvraj was the only difference in the matches against england and australia. We cant expect him to do a 20 ball 50 or a over full of sixes every match. Guys[Indian team] you have still more work on your bowling ..

It was celebration time for cricket fans in Bangalore as many of them descended on Mahatma Gandhi Road on Monday night to celebrate India’s victory against Pakistan in the World ICC Twenty20 championship. Many foreign nationals also joined the revellers in the celebrations.
BANGALORE: Chak De (Let’s do it) India has been the buzzword before the finals of the first the World ICC Twenty20 championship. Just when the Men in Blue achieved what seemed to be a dream, Bangalore erupted in spontaneous celebrations on Monday night with thousands of euphoric citizens taking to the streets to celebrate its most famous victory in the recent times. The almost deserted Mahatma Gandhi Road and Brigade Road came alive within minutes of the victory as fans started congregating on the two streets and were joined in their celebrations by many foreign nationals, sporting the Indian team jersey. Groups from Belgium and the U.S., two countries that are non-cricket playing nations, joined the party dancing with them on the streets, sharing the joy of the cricket crazy crowd. “It was an amazing game with fortunes swinging both sides, and eventually India, the team I cheered throughout won the game,” a Belgium national who gave his first name as Girth told The Hindu. He said: “Though we do not play cricket, many of us follow the game. I felt that I had to wear Indian jersey to the cheer the country in which I am travelling at present.” Another group of Americans also joined the party on Brigade Road and seemed to be enjoying the exhilarating drama staged by the die-hard cricket fans, and even waved the tricolour along with the Indian fans. “Cricket seems to be more interesting and exciting than baseball,” Hans, a college student from the U.S., remarked. The crowd on Mahatma Gandhi Road swelled with thousands of fans descending on the streets to partake in the celebrations. The young and old alike waving the national flags came to participate in this spontaneous celebration. Many brought their family members along to witness the unfolding celebrations and captured photographs for posterity. Rajath Shah, who had come all the way from J.P. Nagar, said: “I knew fans would assemble on Mahatma Gandhi Road to celebrate the victory and I wanted to be a part of it. This has been the biggest success of Indian team on world stage in the recent past, and this victory celebration is a thanksgiving to the Indian team.” It was not a futile effort for Rajath, as the celebrations on these roads went past midnight. The young crowd that came to celebrate had carried along with them loads of crackers and the revellers seemed to enjoy every bit of the euphoric moment, dancing on the street to the tunes of “Chak De India.” http://www.hindu.com/2007/09/25/stories/2007092560520300.htm |
