How to cure and heal frequent and seasonal ailments like dry cough, cold(sneezing/runny nose), sore throat, small blisters in mouth & tongue (vaay punnu), prickly heat rashes, indigestion, constipation, headaches due to summer heat, insect bites, minor cuts and wounds, burns etc. , to remove thorns pricked onto a child's arms, etc. by using items from home kitchen itself ? It would be very helpful if someone can post such 'veettu vaidhyam' methods or even refer to an informative website.
Thanks a lot.

Hi Kamakshi,
I had these in my file which i got from different sites, some of them really helped. I did not try all of them, as i was looking for my daughter.
If i find for others, i'll sure post here.
Cold and cough Remedies:
• The body should be kept warm - especially the feet, chest, throat and head. Sweating is very helpful.
• Take half a teaspoon of ginger juice with half a teaspoon of honey, three times a day (morning, noon and night). In winter, warm the mixture by mixing a teaspoon of warm water in it.
• Mix half a cup of warm water with one teaspoon of lemon juice and one teaspoon of honey.
Dosage: Take several times a day.
• In cases of dry cough (especially during the night), peel a small piece of fresh ginger. Sprinkle some salt on it and chew.
• Take equal amounts of cardamom, ginger powder, black pepper and cinnamon (1 teaspoon each). Add sugar equal to the total amount of mixture and grind to make a fine powder.
Dosage: Take half a teaspoon twice daily, with honey or warm water after meals.
• In cases of sore throat, a clove or two cardamoms or a few raisins can be chewed.Gargling with warm salty water two to three times a day is also beneficial.
Dos and don'ts
The food and activities that are to be avoided are as follows:
• Cold foods and drinks
• Ice cream, sweets, Fried foods
• Milk products (cheese, creams, yogurt)
• Sweet fruit juices
• Breads
• Meats
• Nuts
• Pastries
• Sleeping during the day
• Taking a cold shower
• Exposure to cold wind, fans, air conditioners
Following are the substances and activities that should be taken in cough:
• Boiled or steamed vegetables
• Vegetable soup
• Spice teas
• Herbal teas
• Hot milk with a piece of crushed ginger
• Half a teaspoon of turmeric powder mixed in milk provides relief.
The common cold, everyone gets them, yet there is no easy cure for it, but perhaps there are a few things that can be done to ease the common cold.
1. Vitamin C, one of those wonder vitamins, and it can really help reduce the amount of time you have a cold. The second you feel a cold coming on you should start taking more Vitamin C. It can shorten the length of the cold and make the symptoms less severe.
2. Zinc Lozenges can have the same effect, reduce the symptoms, and quicken recovery. Now this has been in the news of late and it can help.
3. Get plenty of rest, when you rest up your immune system is boosted up and it quickens the process of getting better.
4. Chicken soup, odd but true, it does help cure the common cold. Some chemicals in the soup help to heal. So drink up the soup.
5. Hot shower or bath can relieve congestion and breaks up the mucus.
6. Garlic, if you put garlic in your mouth and chew on it, the juices will help cure the cold. Garlic has a powerful antiviral agent and can knock out a cold in a few days.
7. A bath with a few drops of cinnamon in the bath water, it is said that this can relieve congestion, and generally make you feel better.
Home cures for coughs and colds:
• Mix 1/2 tsp honey, 1/4 tsp cinnamon powder, 1/2 tsp ginger juice, 1/2 tsp lemon juice with 1/2 cup hot water and drink thrice a day.
• Have a paste of 1/2 tsp turmeric powder, a pinch of black pepper and 1 tsp honey after meals and drink hot water or milk.
• Boil 3 cups of water with 1/2 tsp of dry ginger powder. Cool it to lukewarm and drink only this throughout the day.
• Take ½ tsp of warm ghee and ½ tsp of rock salt before going to bed at night.
• Before going to bed, have a mixture of ½ tsp jaggery with 1/2 tsp turmeric powder.
• The juice of 1 tsp each of tulsi, ardusa, honey and lemon in the morning gives relief.
• Mix 1 tsp tulsi juice, 1 tsp fresh ginger juice, 1 tsp honey, and have it in the morning.
• Chew 5 pcs of dates and have ½ cup hot water. It clears the lungs
.
• Take half a tsp of ginger juice, ½ tsp lemon juice with a pinch of rock salt to give relief from cold and cough.
• Boil 1/4 tsp ajwain, ½ tsp turmeric in 1/2 cup of milk and 1/4 cup of water and drink.
• Roasted channa at bedtime gives relief from dry cough.
For 6-month-olds to 2-year-olds:
• Make a paste of 1 tsp of saffron in water. Apply it on the forehead and chest.
• Put a slightly warm betel leaf on the chest and forehead of a child.
• Feed a mixture of 5 drops each of lemon juice, honey and tulsi to the child twice or thrice a day.
• Apply tulsi juice on the forehead and chest.
• Make a small garni (pouch of muslin cloth) of heated ajwain and cloves. Keep it near the baby's head for easy breathing.
Chicken Soup Magic:
Chicken soup is a "folk remedy," but it does work, Galland said. There are a number of scientific studies that show that chicken soup actually increases the flow of mucous and relieves respiratory inflammation. Any hot liquid will help, but controlled scientific studies have shown that chicken soup somehow performed better than just hot water. It appears to have something to do with the soup's aroma, because the studies showed that the effect was not as great for those who drank the soup through a straw. It is better to drink it from a cup, or a bowl. The effect comes entirely from the broth, by the way, not from any pieces of chicken in the soup, the studies found.
As for the indigestion, my mother suggested a home remedy and it worked well for me. All you have to do is take a little syrup extract from ginger and mix it with a cup/small bottle of lemon juice. Add to it one or two spoons of pure honey and store it in refrigerated. Take one or two tbsp of the syrup evreyday morning before you take food.
For vaay punnu, taking manathakkali keerai is very good.
To reduce body heat, add few fenugreek seeds to butter milk and drink.
Hope this will help you a little!

Hello R,
Now a days for my daughter i treat her with old fashioned paatti vaidiyam and i feel it's really worth especially for chest congestion.
When you sieve the whole wheat flour you will get the coarse parts which we call "thavudu" in tamil. Take 1 or 2 handful of thavudu and dry fry them in pan just few minutes to make it warm(bearable to your kid). Then tie them in a thin cotton towel and give oththanam on the chest and also on back for few minutes. But you sould be very careful with the heat, check them with your hands and then go for the kids.
If it is for ur daughter, there are few more home remedies. Here you go,
1. warm upper side of the betel leaves with the help of a candle or vizhakkku, holding the leaves little far the flame(becareful, otherwise it will turn black or get burnt). Place the upper side facing the chest for few seconds and remove, do it several times.
2. Instead of applying vicks, you can prepare a paste by mxing sudam with warm coconut oil and apply on the fore head.
3. You can prepare turmeric paste and apply like "Paththu" on both sides of the forehead.
4. You can take out syrup from the betel leaves, warm it by placing the bowl containing syrup in a pot of hot water. Add a little pepper powder to it and feed a spoon to her.
5. Dry fry the whole black pepper corns and then powder them finely. Add a pinch of the powder to a spoon of honey and can give her. I follow this even for my daughter.
6. You can even give the syrup taken from the tulsi leaves.
Hope this is sufficient!
Try and let me know how it worked.

Thanks, KH. Will try.
I have a question, though. Applying pathu on the forehead-will it reduce congestion on the chest or throat?
Thanks and Bye.

For cough for the little kids:
give kalkandu (sugar candy) mixed with black pepper.
Or boil the milk and add turmeric powder and black pepper powder and drink it when the milk is warm.
For sore throat:
You can goggle in the morning with sesame oil.
Or goggle with warm water mixed with salt.

u just find out the cause for vai punnu. It may be because of anaemia, ulcer in th liver or stomach and intestines or due to the lack of vitamin b2 and b12.If there are problems with the gums also u may get ,mouth ulcer. To check whether it is due to excess heat which is a common one u can use this method.
