Hi all,

We went to Simla once long time back, and while they were serving foods to us, accidentally, asked about the availability of sambhar. Immediately, they arranged and served us. That taste was so unique and different. We were also told that the sambhar was made by a Punjabi person.

So far, I have been trying to find that taste, but failed. Pls anyone have idea about this recipe. I am sure that they dont add any sambhar powder.

  Dear P:
  I am a Punjabi and can tell you exactly what might have happened. The Punjabi Chef added Anaardana and Chaat Masala but for sure Saambar turned out to be yucky.
  Then the Punjabi chef used all the South Indian ingredients the South Indian way. Saambar turned out better than in South India because it had an extra ingredient - The Punjabi touch. :) :)

  Arvind, your respse to P is real good. Liked and had a lot of laughs. YOu are right Punjabis are good cooks in the world I would say. whether it is Sambhar in Simla or Idli in Indiana they can sure make well with right ingredients!!!

  Thanks,Hamsa. At the risk of deviating from original message we all have some fun some times. I hope, R would not mind if I deviate for the last time and say that I took children to explore their roots in India. I took them to Mysore, Banglore, Hyderabad, Madurai and extensively in Kerala. The most memorable eating experience was in a good road side restaurant recommended by the driver - the huge Dosa served on a huge Banana leaf. The waiter and customers kept smiling at our reactions. They wanted us to eat more! Oh boy, we want to go again.

  Definitely, I dont mind at all. Only concern is I yet to get my solutn. So, I think that I should go back to the same hotel in simla to fulfil my wish, when I go to india.

  R, I can try a "shot in dark". My cousin in India some times goes for a pleasure trip to Simla.
  If you remember the Hotel's name and approximate time you visited Simla, I am sure he will try to track down the info for you.
