this is strictly for serious saapaatu ramans... and i am proud to be one of them... just want to write to you about a few places where you get real food... the best you can get apart from your amma's kitchen.
i am born and bred trichy person... so let us start with trichy..... for great tiffin, go to trichy cafe, near gandhi market (i think peria kadai theru) - don't miss lovely rava dosais with tomato chutney, patnam pakoda and chapatis with kuruma. if you visit samayapuram, there is mani iyer hotel on the main road for some really good homemade tiffin. another place for tasty lunch meals is aadhikudi hotel (near singarathope around kalyani covering shop..) - they have open air restaurant in the evening.. don't miss it.. not for ladies though. to finish your tiffin with some icecream that's so good and i haven't tasted anything like that anywhere around the world... - michaels - they have 2 branches.. one in singarathope main street and another near holycross post office.. always crowded... you will be rushed.. but every scoop is worth it.
let's move from trichy to chidambaram where i went to university... this is the best place in the entire world for idlis and dosais - sorry to say even our amma's kitchen can't come close to this - it doesn't have a propoer name - popularly known as vaadhiyaar kadai or idli kadai (although i have seen the owner using a rubber stamp which says ganesh tiffin centre), it is around 10 mins walk from the bus stand (i forgot the road name) and just round the corner of a famous student hangout JD bakery? open for breakfast and for evening tiffin, they only serve idlis and dosais. you don't have to ask for it - a young boy piles 5-6 idlis at a time on your banana leaf... and pours sambar from a jug until you stop him... then follows thengai chutney and onion chutney... the idli is so soft and when you mop it with some sambar and chutney and put in your mouth, it races down... leaving that absolute delight... one step closer to heaven.. no no it actully takes you right into heaven... if this isnit enough, then order the dosai (the boy shouts SPPPPP - i don't know what it means though) you get the dosai in gingely oil - not the commercial one you get at vasantha bhavans around...this is crisp and golden brown outside and still soft inside.. ... that's enough of this place - you have to eat there to believe me... don't miss it when you are next time in chidambaram - no i think you should visit chiadamram only for vaadhiyar kadai. ohhh and dno't forget to ask for the gunpowder and gingeley oil in a small bottle to go with your tifffin - it's hot and you won't forget it. never, ever. wash this down with the fantastic coffee just across the road. once again noman's shop - selss only coffee with loads of sugar... i know it all sounds very calorie rich.. but hey who cares... you live only once...
i will continue with the response... c'mon friends!

Hey, are there any good joints in mumbai that serve good ol' tamil style khana? Other than mani's and shri krishna in matunga, all else are just variations of udipi restaurants - serving sweet sambhar. Also any good tamil non veg joints in Mumbai? Any info is welcome.

Hi
I just now returned from chennai,The sura puttu in velu military hotel was great as S.Kirukkan mentioned, i prefered ponnusamy hotel and velu when compared to anjappar.
I think Anjappar is on mount road , nandanam.Even Andhra bavan ( not sure abt the name) in t.nagar was great for Non veg food.

The one and only place in CBE is Annapoorana. Quality is excellent. I grew up with its food for 15 yrs and went there this year after 6 years, taste has not changed at all. Pricewise it is bit costly compared to an average restaurant but if you compare with veg hotels in chennai, it is nothing.
Saravana Bhavan is the worst over-rated hotel in the world. I took breakfast there for 39 Rs and still not satisfied - their onion dosa is Rs.22 and nothing is in it(compare to Annapoorana's outstanding onion dosa which is 17 Rs and has more chutney/sambhar in it). Their lunch is also waste for Rs.35 - its just rice and rice, they dont give chappathis like in Bangalore or Bombay. The people eating there roll it into spheres and throw it in their mouths, seeing that I nearly vomited!! I finished my food fast, didnt touch the payasam and ran out of the hotel. I dont think they even give a spoon to eat - please dont expose such places to north indians or foreigners.

I have tasted allmost all the restaurants and mess mentioned here. In Coimbatore I like "Paati mess" and "amma mess" near Archana theatre. Their idlis and 10 to 15 varities of dosas are really tates goooood. More over 4 types of chutneys, sambhar and milagai podi for Rs.10 to Rs.20 is great!!!!!
