Hi folks,
Can someone tell what is the right kind of henna powder to apply for colouring & conditioning the hair ? What other ingredients should be added & what is the correct proportion to be mixed and how long to keep on hair before shampooing? How many times per week should we shampoo after that and how long will the colour last ? Can we oil the hair regularly , after this henna treatment ? Is henna better than the other commercial colourants or will henna dry the hair further ? Any precautions to be taken ? Need urgent response, so many thanks in advance to who responds ; your help is appreciated a lot !
Kamakshi.

Dear Kamakshi,
Henna treatment is a better one for coloring and conditioning. You can apply henna once in 15 days. You can oil and shampoo your hair as usual.you get henna in many brands, but be sure it is mentioned on the packet.

The correct proportion for mixing it depends upon the length and thickness of the hair.If one has length a little below shoulder 3 table spoon of henna is sufficient.Boil a glass of water and add either tea or coffee powder 3 to 4 spoons, boil till it comes to half a glass and filter it.once it cooled mix the henna powder to thick paste.let it be for an hr.If u make this in an iron kadai and keep it overnight gives good effect.
next add 1/2 a lime juice ,1 egg whiteand 1/2 a spoon curd to it mix it well ,keep this for 15 mins.Don't forget to wear gloves while applying it.keep this for 2 to 3 hrs and wash it with plain water .next day apply oil and shampoo it. you will feel the difference.Let me know....

Thanks a ton for your immediate advice, Devi.
Should it be applied only on the greying hair ? If applied on normal black hair, will the black colour start becoming brown ?

You can apply on normal hair also, you don't have to soak it over night.plain Henna itself a good conditioner. If you do this one will not get grey hair soon.
Take care

Dear Devi,
I have waist length hair & am getting few strands of grey/silver esp. on the crown/forehead area & so is very visible.I don't want to use chemical dyes. That's why I have decided on henna & was worried whether my remaining black hair will become 'sembattai' (brown).
Last year a neighbour of mine had tried something called 'kaali mehndi' (black henna) and her hair started falling a lot !! Is this different from regular henna & if possible, can you suggest any good brand please?
Thanks so very much for responding Devi and I'll try it soon & certainly post the result.

Dear Kamakshi,
I suggest henna treatment will be good for ur hair.Ofcourse grey ones turns brownish but the black ones remains black. If ones u start applying it than u can find the difference.THe brand is Rehma henna.I got from India Amrit's henna.I have no idea abt Kalimehndi. My Friends are happy with this henna treatment.
You will not have instant coloring like the HAIRDYE.
All the best

Hi Devi,
I applied henna for my hair yesterday, as per your suggestions and it has made my hair so soft, nice & shiny too. I got 'Ashok' brand henna powder & the colour also was fine, not too noticeably dark. I am very pleased now, for getting good results without any chemicals usage. Loads of thanks to you Devi, for kindly responding. Bye.

Hey gori,
You are in cold country...?? anyways ,if you are in cold place you will be having heater in the house.THe egg acts as a conditioner and also it neutralises the coldness of henna. If you are having doubt regarding this, pls consult a doctor.Don't take a chance...
Thanks

Just a word of warning, there is no such thing as black henna! It contains PPD, which is highly toxic, read about it here : http://www.hennapage.com/henna/ppd/
oh, and watch out for a brand called Biggen too, it's pure PPD, stay away from it!

I have wavy thick hair with a typical south indian frizz. I would really like it to become shiny and straight so that I can leave it open occassionally. Was thinking of getting my hair chemically straightened. Does anyone have prior experience with this kind of straightening? Does straightening take away the frizz?

straightening takes away frizz. thermal reconditioning is very popular now in the US. it is a permanent treatment and makes hair poker straight. they say that you dont even have to blowdry your hair.. just wash and that's it.
