Yesterday I bought my first iron kadai and when I started washing it I noticed a strong smell of motor oil. I boiled some water and the smell was still there. After washing it again I put some cooking oil and spread it with a piece of absorbing paper and the paper turned black. I would like to know if that is normal and if it is safe to use it because I am seriously thinking of returning it to the shop.
Please someone help me!

Hi,
You need to season the kadai. Wash it well and dry it immediately. Apply a coat of oil on both the sides and keep it in a pre heated oven for 30-40 minutes at 350F. After it cools down, remove from the oven and wash it with soap and dry immediately. apply a thin coat of oil on both sides and store it. Your kadai will be ready for use. Lot of people say that you need to follow more procedures, but I have done just this for all the iron skillets that I've bought, and it works just fine.
