TAMARIND basics

Whenever I cooked I used tamarind paste, I would like to use tamarind instead. Is the following the procedure. If tamarind is used, first wash it, then soak it in LITTLE water , then boil it and then squeeze tamarrind to extract pulp for the dishes.
When tamarind is to be added in recipies for DRY MASALA POWDERS, how is tamarind added. Do we make pulp and add it (which will not be dry masala) or is there another procedure. Thanks.

How do you add tamarind while making curry leaf powder and other dry masalas. Do we have to add pulp or add tamarind directly from packet or wash it and add?

Hello P,
As far as I know, u can prepare curry leaf powder without adding tamarind. I do like that only and the taste is of course nice. so, why dont u try?
Only for thokku or chutney, use to add tamarind.
To which you refer "dry masala powder"?

Just now, I referred to Meenakshi ammal's cookery book and it says that u can add tamarind directly from the packet. Before grinding, pound it mildly and then grind with the other ingredients.
