I hope we could post English translations of Tamil Poems that could make them endearing to the benefit of the non-skilled-in-tamizh people.
This includes all translations done before by different people of *any* poem and why, it can even be a translation attempted by one of us.

moon is a worldwide symbol of love (read lust :-) - reason: moon at *night* is beautiful :-) ). this is very common in all (almost) literature.
that "my wife" cannot be inferred from bhArathi's poem. (but, i have heard that he wrote for chellammA and then changed it to kaNNammA on advice of his friends!)

{
Like moonlight and the sky,
like the warrior and his sharp sword,
like the beautiful blossom and it's fragrance,
like the crocodile-shaped lute and it's music,
like the eye and it's lustre,
so is my sweet Tamil and I.
If a stranger asked me, what was the name of my tribe, an inexpressible joy would arise in my heart.
'I am a Dravidian,' I'd say, and my tongue would be all honey, and my pride and glory would reach the skies.

A poem should be absorbed in its spirit, not in format..

Kanchana's faithful translation is one way, and many times this is a ''safe'' way. Because, if the translating person applies his/her own whims and fancies to the original poem, then, it will be a disaster.
But Mani's attempt is wonderful. I think he has been faithful enough to the original and we should definitely welcome this approach. Such translation/transliteration will have more 'impact' on the readers of the new language.
Mani, continue your good effort.
(Well. Let me also pinpoint one thing which did not sound quite right for me.
'.... call out your name loud'. -loud could probably be avoided here. so that it will apply to calling out normally or loud... or even whispering. also it will be in line with Bharathi.)

When a tear drops from your eye,
A drop of blood falls from my heart
Aren't you the one in my eye, Kannamma?
Isn't my life all yours?
Burden-bearer of time, you have borne me on your breast
And wiped off my tears, in that deed my misery disappears
So what if I have a thousand relations like the leaves of a banyan tree?
You were always my root, and so I stood without falling.
On a bed of stone even with no cover on me
I was left to sleep like a madman because of my child.
I have children for namesake and relations for conversation
But who knows what I need?
Only a Goddess like you will know ...
When a tear drops from your eye,
A drop of blood falls from my heart

Could anyone tell me where I might find "Kuyil Pattu" ? One of the books I'm reading just has a few passages, unfortunately. I also found this:
In all this extensive world
The trees so many,
The gay scented plants,
The green grass and the rare herbs,
How do they make their living?
If man neither tilled nor sowed,
Neither tended nor watered,
Still the rains from the heavens
Must feed the trees, corn and grass.
Nothing fear, mortals: follow me.
Do not incessantly toil;
Trust Nature to give you food;
Love is your only duty here.
The book says: The alchemy which can draw out beauty from earth and sky, stone and water, light and darkness, raven and nightingale, is love, love, love all the way. Bharati's elixir was Love which alone can bring out the soul of the good, beautiful and true from all things.
wow...........

I have brought out a book titled ' Silent Streams'
that has over 110 contemporary tamil poems of 82 poets translated into English. The book costs Rs 50 in India and is yet to be formally launched.
Here is an excerpt
Man alone
Birds
Remain as birds
Trees
Remain as trees
Animals
Remain as animals
Worms
Remain as worms
Man alone
Chooses
To remain
As anyone
Of these.
- Nimoshini
Kinship among shadows
While
A man and a woman
On the same path
Under the same light
Walked
Apart,
Their shadows
Long and leaning
Met
Again and again
To pet and
To part.

Hey this is real neat.... I like the transliteration stuff especially useful for someone who is a real neophyte in Tamizh but is learning to read and enjoy Tamil.
