Pather Panchali is simply the greatest movie ever to come out of India. It is poetry in black and white, magic in the real world. You love the characters immediately, especially Durga.

It is one of the greatest movies to come out of anywhere!! Satyajit Ray was gifted beyond words.

I really love this movie. So much so that I've been trying to find out about the actors and actresses in it. Does anyone know what happened to Uma Das Gupta who played Durga. It seems that she only made this one movie.

Have you seen the 2 remaining episodes of the trilogy? What about his other films?

yes, I did see the whole trilogy but I couldn't find the magic and poetry in them that was present in Pather Panchali. This must be a flaw in myself because most people do see it. I haven't seen his other films yet, I hesitate because I don't want to be disappointed. Again that is my flaw.

My favotite of the three is Aparajito. It kills me!! Don't hesitate to see his other films, you will not be disappointed. They are all different and very real. I highly recommend Jalsaghar.

Another must-see of Ray is Charulata, the master himself believed it was his best.
btw,
have u guys watched films by other great Indian film-makers? I ask this because most people know only Ray. There were other masters with their brand of great cinema.

All the movies from Ray, I found intersting in a way or other. His last film Aganthuk with UtpalDutt in main role is also a very good film

Has anyone seen 'Manthan'? I guess it's also Ray's but not sure. Girish Karnad & Smita Patil are the main faces.

Ray should be also remembered for his 'lighter' movies - Herak Rajar Desh, Sonar Kella, Gopi Gyne Baga Byne etc.
Of the Bengali trimuverate (Satyajit Ray, Mrinal Sen and Ritwick Ghatak), Ghatak is the least known outside the art-film circuits (how many remember his Megha Daka Dare - especially the whip lash -in the background score - sequence?)
Manthan is by Shyam Benegal - the producers of the movie were the members (farmers) of a Coop Society in rural Gujrath (Anand).

Some might blame me for blasphemy, but I prefer "Charulata" over "Pather Panchali". Even "Agantuk", which wasn't a major wowie with Ray's ardent fans, I thought, was amazing. And how come no one here's speaking on "Shatranj Ke Khiladi"? It was a delightful piece of work from the maestro. I've come across some of the sketches Ray did for the shots, which involved great art direction and you could see how detailed was this man's vision of his shots in those sketches. Really amazing stuff. And by the way, wasn't the "Gopi Gayne Bagha Bayne" sequel directed by Sandip Ray?

Hi
You guys say Pather Panchali is good. But how should a person ever supposed to buy these movies in India. It seems like no body is selling these movies in India. These indian movies are available in the US. If some body knows some address where movies like Pather Panchali, Jalsaghar, Aparajito etc. are sold please mention it here. I am sure many people would benefit from this.
Thanks
Ranjith
