ya i feel the same there were a lot of good old songs in malayalam..but we can't conclude tht malayalam music in 60's are better than now...because music directors like vidyasagar, reveendran and ousepachan are constantly giving good songs....

Raveendran, Vidyasagar and ouseppachan are giving good songs, no doubt about it. But they dont give great songs like the 60's and early seventies.
I dont prefer to say Old is Gold for that. because the Malayalam songs of 50s are not as good as 60s and seventies.
The sixties and early seventies were dominated by Vayalar with P.Bhaskaran,Thambi and Yousuf Ali giving good support. That was the golden period of our music.

I agree with you all.. there are good music directors now, to add to teh list johnson master or bombay ravi also good.. and recently suresh peters and mohan sitara also make hits:
Now teh point i was trying to make.. look even today we look back teh sixties and early 70s songs and teh new generation also trying to listen to those. [In fact the neelakkuyil of 1953 is a trend setter for many reasons-malaylathile adyathe bhavaganam-oru pakshe indiayil thanne aa reethiylilla adyathe movie!]
now when we look 80s or 90s we see there were hits but never remebered after a certain period. the only exception i see is a certain period of teh eighties..where panchagni, nakhashathangal, dwani, january oru orma and sargam...nadodikkattu and thoovana thumbikal, (to list a few). .which is remebered and sung by every one.. again early 90s a few..like chithram, his highness abdulla, bharatham/kamaladhalam, devasuram.. etc again 1996-97 a number of hits!! un beleivable the year!!! i just dont understand how come so many movies and its songs rememberd in that peroid! like sallapam, hitler, aniyathi pravu, kalapani, devaragam, and many more in a shor time period and all being remebered even now. I feel each of teh songs where different from one another and were from very different music directors/lyricists!
as i see it.. there is a ceratin period in malaylam cinema comes with a number of hits which remebered later too.. not just when teh film is released! then a long silence.. If you look... after the prominent vayalar/pbhaskaran-devarajan-yesudas/other singers, of teh 60-70s, mid 80s and mid 90s produced certain very goood memorable songs.. and all from very different lyric writers/composers..
Writen that, comparing the volume of movies and the no of memorable hits, stil 60s and early seventies dominates!
Anyway every one has their own movies!

OFCOURSE OLD IS GOLD, Just think about it, they made very nice music without any technicall support.Like now lot of music instruments.
The song "unaroo..unaroo" and 'Pathinaalamm raaave"(Yesudas),maanikkaveena, nallikerathinte.lot of. All of them is very very perfect.Think of music now in my words i can say that's not a indianmusic.Indianmusic is play with indian music instraments. But now everybody following western style. Tht's not indian music.
But of couse Old music is indian music.
Thank You.

I feel the deciding factor is the influence the song writers had on their childhood...writers like vayalar, Bhaskaran, poovachal Khader and musicians like Devarajan grew up learning the romantic poetry of idols like changampuzha and edapally in their childhood..and that explains the outward simplicity yet depth of meaning of their songs. Compare that to the present writers..and we can perceive the difference.

Well Jay Jay,
Well........ I think the 70s and early 80s was the best period for music. Melody at its best.

Well, the golden time in malayalam music composing/orchestration was in 80's and next to that was 90's then going back to 70's and 60's. Now a days, the music composing is just focusing for physical dance or rhythm ONLY. THERE IS NO TOUCHING OF THE INNER SOULS OR FEELINGS compared to the previous years song composors and lyrics where so much romance and intimacy flowed from heart to heart. It created a REAL SINCERE FEELING & VERY EMOTIONAL/SENTIMENTAL environment in every music lover's mind. Now, importance is just given for HEAVY METAL RHYTHM & BEATS. Even the vocal recording has been very pathetic as it is recorded in DIGITAL MODE ONLY(Don't get me wrong, I am not against Digital recording but vocals should be preferred to be done in high-tech ANALOG MODE which is so soothing and natural to hear). If anyone of you have a good EAR please listen to the songs after the late 90's and then go back and listen to the songs in the 80's. You will feel the difference. Poor Dasettan(DR. K.J.YESUDAS)'s vocal recording(most of them) has been ruined by being DIGITAL. Today, if his vocals were recorded in THARANGINI STUDIO or Equivalent Studios like in the 80's at least his vocals would have been so GREAT! I don't know what this people are doing in the studios as well as the music composers. Now in common, People have gone away from Pure love, sincerity, genuinity, dedication, commitment, true emotions, long vision, soulfully and poetically. Nowadays,it is just a matter of money and materialism where they think that's where life is all. - JSK
