The late Maharaja of Mysore is a wonderful composer. His compositionas are gramatically great and composed in the rarest of ragas.I'd request one and all to share their views about his compositions and also mention any rare gems sung by musicians which you may have in your collection!I recently heard his composition in Gamanasrama.Outstanding!

A small typo. In the anupallavi it should read varaguNa bharitE.

Thank You so much Mr. Lakshman. I really can't thank you enough for all that you have done. I really appreciate this favor. I was looking for the lyrics since, a long time and my whole famiky tries their best to look for it, but they came empty-handed. I would really appreciate it if you can either tell me who has sung this song, or if you can send me the song for it. Thanks a lot once again.

I have heard M.S.Subbukalshmi singing this song as part of a group of other Vasudevacharya kritis recording. It is also availble on Sangeetha 6ECDB 549 cassette sung by H.Ramakrishnan. Undoubtedly many others must have rendered this nice song.

Recently, I heard a Jayachamaraja composition in Ragam mAND, rendered by M. S. Sheela in a Toronto concert 2001. The krithi is very delightful. From the audio recording, I could make out the lyric as follows - but I have some doubts in a couple of places. Please correct me.
rAgam: mAND
pallavi:
brahmANDa valayE mAyE
brahmAdi vandita shivajyAyE
anupallavi
brahmavidyAnandita h.rdayE
]brahmeshaadyupAsita shrIvidyA-
brahmarandhra nilayE
caraNam
gautamArcita gAyatri
gauri girirAjendramohE
kantarahitA nArAyaNi
kAruNya lalitE ma~njubhaShE
antarmaya jyotirmaya kalyANi
ahinibhavENi purANi
antarahita kaivalya vihAriNi
gatinirtana kariNi gIrvAni
(Sheela sings the anupallavi as
brhamAshAdyupAsita??). also I am unable to figure out the meaning of the very last line.
I would like the correct sahityam. Thanks

Lakshman: Thanks for the correct lyrics. In the Toronto concert, M.S.Sheela did not sing the very last caranam line beginning with "apavava sasarjAtA ...". She sang "anta rahita kaivalya" instead of ati rahita. What is the maning of atirahita? I guess anta rahita seems more appropriate. Again, I am unable to understand the menings of the phrases "apavava sasarjAtA tASu vIryamAva shrjatE etc".
Nyway, it is a beautiful composition. Thanks again

I guess the rAga mudra "mAND" in the krthi "brahmANDa valayE" is cleverly built into the opening phrase "brahmANDa" itself! The vAggeyakAraka mudra "shriVidya" is there.

Shree Chamundeshwari krithi in Bilahari is not composed by HH Jayachaamaraajendravadeyar. His krithis are like Dheekshithar's -- they have raaga or the 'sthala' mentioned. This is composed by Vaasudevaachaarya of Mysore

Hello,
Sri Jayachamaraja Wodeyar's 'Kshirasagara Shayana Hrdaya Viharini' in Mayamalava Gowla is my all time favourite. Words cannot describe the sheer magic which was created when this Kriti was rendered by Smt. MS, at a concert dedicated to H H Paramacharyal of Kanchi. This Kriti speaks of lofty ideals of Srividya. It is well known that Maharaja was initiated into Srividya by the great Acharya of Sringeri. It is believed that he lived completely on uncooked for about 30 years and had food without any salt! Some people have brought out books in Kannada, listing his Kritis. The lyrical aspect of his Kritis is greatly ignored. This could be becuase of their high technical content. Whatever it be, his Kritis are a rare treasure for Rasikas, esp if they are aware of the Srividya Tatva.

I feel there are some clarifications needed on some of the points made above:
1. Confusion regarding Sri chamundeswari palayamam is due to the fact H.H.jaya Chamaraja Wadiyar also has composed a Kriti having almost the same pallavi ( ||ChamunDeswari PalayaMam|| ShrE RajaRaJeswari bhuvaNeswari||. But this kriti is in rAgA : rhushabhapriya in khandatriputa tAlA.
2. Regarding brahmANDa valayE, the last caranam line beginning with "apavava sasarjAtA ..." is not part of the kriti. In fact the reason for Mr.Lakshman including it could be attributed to his transcribing it from Prof. V.Ramarantnam's book. As a matter of fact even Prof.Ramarantnam has stated it as part of Manusmruthi -10th chapter. It is preface to his comments on the Kriti. Correct last caranam line is:
||ati rahita kaivalya vihAriNi gati nirjitakarini gIrvAni||
3. Anupallavi needs some correction:
|| brahma vidyA nandita hrdayE brahmashryAdyupAsita shrI vidyE brahmarandhra nilayE
