I hope this is not an inappropriate post. I am new to the study of Indian classical music and I have a couple of questions (the first of many I am sure).
I am aware that a raga is a complex melding of scale, dominant notes and key phrases. Nonetheless as I listen I find it hard to pick up the key identifying phrases or the vadi/samvadi without any pointers. Is there anywhere I can get this kind of background on a raga (like hearing the arohana/avarohana) before I listen to it seriously?
My second question is simpler, I hope. I have a recording named Raga Kafi, and another named Mishra Kafi. What does Mishra signify, and what differences should I listen for?
My apologies if I am at the wrong place for asking such questions.
Kind regards
Jerry
