hello,

we find that new raagams are being invented even now by greats like Dr.Balamurali krishna...
It becomes necessary that to do such a thing the concerned persons have a complete knowledge of all the existing raagams in classical music...

it can even be possible that these raagams might have existed long long before and we did not know about the same...(due to lost manuscripts and so on....)

in the first case what will be the approximate number of raagams known to mankind in carnatic classical music today (obviously janya raagams and vakra raagams put together)....where will i get a complete listing of all these raagams with their arohanams and avarohanams....

in the second case when we agree upon that a new raagam has been invented , is it with respect to a comparison with all the previous other raagams known to us ??

  Using permutations and combinations some 300000 ragas can be devised. Of these scales are available for about 5000 in Karnatak music. Only about 600 ragas are in vogue. Two of the books that deal only with ragas and scales are: Ragapravaham by D.Pattammal and G.N.Dhandapani, and Palaiyazhi by B.M.Sundaram. Both these books are available from Karnatic Music Book Centre, 14 Sripuram 1st street, Royapettah, Chennai 6000014.
