Is there an acceptable reason why some singers (on tapes) sing certain compositions with some of the lyrics altered in places. Is it because some compositions can be sung with different words, or because know one knows the proper words etc etc.. I have found this to be particularly frustrating as I am learning carnatic music and don't actual know the full meaning of certain words (nor do some of the music teachers that I have spoken to)

  It depends upon which songs you are thinking about. Purandaradasa's songs, over the five centuries, have different versions for many songs. Songs of more recent composers should not have changed wordings. Singers may mispronounce words but the original texts are generally in tact as the composers wrote them.

  Your approach is correct. You can try to get meanings from online dictionaries or visit a local temple and ask someone there. The powerful sculpture that is the carnatic composition ( i.e. kriti) requires that you understand the meaning to glimpse the vision of the vaageyakaara ( i.e. composer). Otherwise, its pretty much a study of the variations in air pressure.
